Everyone I know who watches Fatt Coville videos is a fucking terrible GM. I've never fully watched one and I am widely considered the best GM out of all 3 groups I'm part of. I am regularly requested to run campaigns. People borderline fall asleep in the games others run. There's also no tension because they know that these Coville acolytes will fudge rolls until all PCs survive the battle. If you're a good GM, it's an inmate talent you can hone over time. You're born that way. If you aren't, then no amount of shitty advice is going to make up for your lack of talent. It just is what it is. This idea that everyone should "try" DMing is retarded. The idea that anyone can be good at it? lolno. Its like some fat divorced on who suddenly decides he's gonna become a famous author. Fat chance. Most people fucking suck at GMing. Hell, most of them suck at playing, but at least in that case the game depends less on them.
>>97258418>until that one quiet wallflower suddenly explodes and shouts how much they've hated the game from day one and how you always ignore themIf they're a wallflower then they can leave the game, no one will miss them. If some fags spergs out like that then he can leave anyway.>Honestly, man, I don't think you play games at all, you just talk about them on reddit and /tg/ pretending to know shit. You play games online with disposable fake friends and low-effort garbage DMs. That's part of the issue. >when five minutes of being frank going "you're too stingy with loot" or "we'd like more combat encounters" would fix everything.Yes the campaign should be something the players can adjust with metagame sliders all the time.>wahhh we want more loot!Is this an 00s boomer webcomic meme? Of course they do. Sometimes the problem is what it is the players should solve it in game. Sometimes it is an actual issue, but that doesn't mean the DM should be catering to the players' whims. That's like a child being given 100 dollars for a candy shop. Also, a good DM will simply give out the correct amount. No, what the players want, doesn't really matter. What they want is usually gay and infantile 90% of the time.>b-b-b-b-but it's all about funIf you want low-effort high-loot slop, then go play a video game. A good dungeon master wouldn't indulge those kinds of vidya-minded tards.>muh no true scotsman fallacyIf you don't believe in even semi-objective standards for good DMing, regardless of what playoids might want in the moment (again, a child craves to eat all the candy in the world, but the stomachache afterward will make him wish he hadn't), then I can't help you. You'll just reduce everything to subjectivity and use that to justify the mindset that the DM should suck off the players.
>>97259540Astonishing, not a single shred of intelligence in this post anywhere.
>>97259507>Van GoghYou mean the man who died broke and insane, with his art considered worthless and talentless until he died? That's really your comparison for "you're either gifted or you're not", the man who couldn't sell his skills to literally save his life? Jesus christ, how are you such an idiot?
being a good DM/player is mostly attitude.I've DM'd for people who bragged about having decades of experience and they ended up being annoying problem players and I've DM'd for first time players who had great instincts and were a lot of fun to play with.most GM advice is common sense that anyone with social skills and storytelling ability will know.
>>97262938Nah it's about 25 percent attitude. The rest is genuine competence in running the game and making it engaging and imaginative.

However, you do things in a weird, wacky woohoo way that tends to inflict collateral (literally or figuratively) in place of sheer effectiveness. >>97264738>>97264790Speaking of Dark Souls, I was surprised to find that Creighton has a ton of fangirls for a side NPC who never shows his face (though fans are happy to speculate). I guess the fact that he's a serial killer and a bit of a doofus should've been a sufficient hint.
>>97258518In brief, this was a two-session thing. Our group assembled to hunt a monster, while led by this Gaston-esque meathead hunter. We went on the hunt and it turned out that a group of especially clever goblins (led by a druid) had managed to ensorcel an owlbear and turn it into a weapon. Our party's rogue scouted ahead, but after falling into a pit and nearly getting poked to death by spears, screamed for help before he got killed. We rushed up and saved his ass, but the NPC mocked him for running off along and almost getting murdered by goblins. We managed to interrogate one and find out where the druid was hiding and tracked them back to the cave. After a few skirmishes with goblins riding dogs, we found the bugbear druid leader and he unleashed the owlbear on us. In the brief, brutal fight that followed I got entangled and the rogue got mauled down into the negatives by the Owlbear (I don't think he had tumble, because he ate AoOs when moving around.) After we killed the druid, the rest of the goblins scattered or were cut down. The hunter guy hacked off the Owlbear's head and was like "Haha, a mighty victory!"My PC, who had narrowly avoided getting killed, went "That was impressive." and he went "I get that a *lot*. What say you we celebrate, over...dinner?"So I said "Okay!" and we went back to the inn to celebrate and (because why not?) fuck. The rogue was not happy and complained that the DM was picking on him, and complained that we were giving the NPC all the credit. I mean the whole thing was basically a gag, I don't see why he was so upset.

>>97258165One of the villains in my current desert campaign is like this. I copy/pasted Borak from Exemplars of Evil, but made the dragon a male blue dragon, with the disposition of Jabba the Hutt. He has a harem by which his army of half-blue warriors are created, but his current favorite girl is supposedly the sister of a city lord who employs the players and they're hired to rescue her. Neither the dragon nor the players know the damsel in distress is actually an ancient succubus sent as an emissary of an impossibly old chaos sea beast, and her enslavement to the dragon is the only thing keeping the current rise of demons, undead, and wild magic across the sands from becoming far worse.
>>97258165yes but WHY does he want the bitches? Is he a hornball? Does he simply want the prestige that comes with it? ... Does he need someone to talk to?

Whether you're plotting your campaign, trying to come up with a character backstory, or just trying to write some setting fluff, this is the place to post it. Previous thread: >>97111514GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.If you're wondering where to start:- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?
>>97262476Not enough granularity IMO but what do I know, I just own guns
Any good quick gadgeteering rules outside the ones in Basic Set? I'm looking for something with less GM fiat, and less reliance on $ value for deciding skill penalties
>>97264753Here's what I do, with my slightly adjusted crafting rules from low tech:>Your man-hour is worth $10.>Your man-day is worth 75$>Your man-week is worth 525$>Quick Gadgeteer: If you have the quick Gadgeteer advantage, multiply your man-time by 100.>You must have 20% in cost of the raw materials, then keep adding man-hours and man-days until you got the full price, then make a skill check.>If you have materials worth more than the minimum 20% you may use those to reduce the amount of time spent with man-hours.Example: Edgy Rapier costs 900. 900*20%=180 so you have 180$ worth of iron first, and then add 75$ every day until you reach 900, so it would take around 9 days to craft it. If you had the quick gadgeteer, your man-hour would be worth 1000$, allowing you to craft the rapier in a single hour!
>>97264800This is shit. Explain why it takes longer to cast gold than to cast iron.
>>97264872Sorry anon, let me correct myself.>CINEMATIC CRAFTING RULES>Your man-hour is worth $10.>Your man-day is worth 75$>Your man-week is worth 525$>Quick Gadgeteer: If you have the quick Gadgeteer advantage, multiply your man-time by 100.>You must have 20% in cost of the raw materials, then keep adding man-hours and man-days until you got the full price, then make a skill check.>If you have materials worth more than the minimum 20% you may use those to reduce the amount of time spent with man-hours.There, it's fixed. So weird how GURPS players seem to forget that their GENERIC UNIVERSAL RPG has cinematic rules.

The DM reveals that all this time, the 'Chaotic Evil invading soldiers' you've been fighting and slaughtering were actually Lawful Good innocent untrained peasants. They were tricked/convinced into believing they were fighting for survival and defense of their impoverished homeland.THE PALADIN FALLS AND LOSES ALL POWERS!!!Do you feel like a hero yet?
>>97252887If Paladins weren't supposed to fall then they wouldn't have rules for it. The whole broken oath thing is a Chekovs Gun, and it's immoral on the part of the DM to NOT shoot the gun during the campaign. Paladins are literally asking for it by having an oath at all.
>>97254320>a holy warrior going to war causes him to fall that's just being a shit DM.Consummating your marriage automatically causes a Paladin to fall, so it's reasonable that going to war does.
>>97264534>Paladins are literally asking for it by having an oath at all.You clearly don't understand the concept of an paladin oath, or have mistaken it for a taboo. A paladin oath has to be knowingly violated, or accomplish an act so incompatible with their vows and code of conduct in general, that it requires repentance for. The idea that a DM should be obligated to punish the player in some kind of "gotcha" moment only adds to unnecessary hostility, and just means the players have no reason to trust their DM if they're made aware they're intentionally plotting to ruin their fun on the flimsiest excuses.

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies. These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence. This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.(Continued.)
>>97260395You are welcome.>>97260797Yes, it is very much possible to make a fake vampire, a fake werewolf (down to the spirit manipulation), and so on using the core rulebook alone. A fake changeling, even, given Shallow Graves and powers like Fate-Bind and Opener of Ways.It is also possible to use the Black Vans' 38,000+ word chapter on playing Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves using Deviant's own rules.
>>97262563Alright I'm def getting this shit then. The other Deviant supplements were pretty damn crummy so I was hesitant
