GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?

Depending on how good a swimmer you are (and where you are), that might be survivable. People have swum longer distances than that in the sea.
How do you know where you are? Did you have time to get a GPS reading before the water wrecked your phone? Waterproof smart-watch?
Your immediate problem is that unless you can navigate be the stars / sun or have some kind of water-resistant GPS-enabled device, you don't even know which direction to swim in.

Planning on doing a one-shot/short campaign that takes place in the eastern front, 1944 being more specific. I am wondering if i can do it using the theater of the mind, considering it is going to be a war setting (although it's probably going to be a desperate retreat behind enemy lines than actual fighting).
>>
>>97227226
I'm refraining from using tactical maps because this is my first try at getting my toes wet on this system, and rpgs in general as a gm.
>>
>>97227226
>>97227232
Theater of the mind is more difficult to handle, because you have to make sure your descriptions are good enough that everybody has the same understanding. You don't have to do hex counting, but you should at least have rough sketch maps of "you're here, they're here, the treeline is over here".

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

Never read it but this one too.
There was a rulelite in 10mm with grimdark cubeheades and Napoleonic a e s t h e t i c but I don't know if it got past beta.
Mechanically its not hard to think of ways to have it work, I think its that its boring to most people interested in fantasy.

Wars of Ozz is Napoleonic and has witches and wizards. They mostly made the magic utility focused though. When I get home I'll find some examples. It's super boomer coded and there's only a physical book with Facebook eratta, no PDF.
>>

Actually, they released updated charts that include all the spells. iirc, named characters get a specific spell list, generic mercenary witches and wizards roll for one or two spells each.

It's a nice way to give high int characters the spotlight imo. Plus it just feels good to say your character knows something. imo at least.
>>
>>97227179
>1e and 2e mention several times that you can't roll lore for things your character couldn't possibly know.
Page number? I'm looking at the rules for Lore for both editions and it actually doesn't. They do note Lore a mortal shouldn't possibly be able to know is the realm of a Legendary difficulty/difficulty 6+, but I don't actually see what you're claiming anywhere

>Plus, again, obscurity of information is a very vague notion based solely around who your character is. What's obscure for one character isn't obscure for another. That's a bunch of narrative qualifiers.
No actually, 2e at least notes the difficulties are the same for any character

>Also I'm pretty sure you're wrong and it does suggest adjusting rolls for drama.
Again, looking right at the rules for 1e and 2e in another tab, neither of them do

>It's just using them know things. It makes the whole "Lore rolls can't have you know this" when you have charms where you roll lore to know something exist or just... auto learn it.
Well again, that was never the point of dispute, either with you or the previous anon, so yeah, you're moving goalposts, even if unintentionally

>I'm sure we can think of plenty of things that can happen IC that would allow a player to make a lore roll with either a higher or lower difficulty.
And this is the point of contention, because that's not the case in 1e or 2e anon, at least when it comes to obscurity of information, which is what I've been saying this whole time. There are other effects that'll do that, yes, but they have nothing to do with the information the character is trying to see if they know

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

I feel like I don't really understand NA's 'thing', even ignoring sub-factions. What's the faction gimmick supposed to be? I guess the fire teams?
>>
>>97226745
Jack of all trades, master of none.
The big thing they have is the mech infantry but these are way too expensive to field in numbers in the early stages of a campaign. Especially considering they’re over half the cost of an absolute monster like a Lord of Tumors but nowhere near half as good.
In my limited experience your best bet is a Lieutenant and maybe a Cleric, two shock troopers for leadership support/bodyguarding, and everything else into guys with rifle/bayonet combos. Focus fire while advancing, you want volume of fire to keep inflicting blood markers. Once you’ve won a couple of games and lost a few of these chaff models is when you start running trench moles, sniper priests and mech armor.

Not covered in the 2004 Chapter Approved CSM codex FAQ, but I'd say no on account of being a monstrous creature rules wise, with the option of yes if you and your opponent aren't going to get shitty about it and can reasonably talk your way through rules disputes because a daemon prince surrounded by a retinue looks cool.
I don't think it was ever done in a battle report if that helps.
>>
>>97224402
Thanks a lot, anon.
>>
>>97224402
Being a monstrous creature doesn't prevent you from joining a unit, the stature rules even say that he can be picked as a target even if within 3 inches of a unit. You can hide the Avatar in a unit because he has no such rule.
>>
>>97019770
Where in the 2ed rulebook does it describe the consequences of being on fire? It's not under psychology.

In 2ed you can't fire through other models in the same unit, right? I couldn't find the exception.
>>
>>97225739
>Where in the 2ed rulebook does it describe the consequences of being on fire? It's not under psychology.
Special rules for flame weapons in the armory book
>In 2ed you can't fire through other models in the same unit, right? I couldn't find the exception.
nope, no exception, although large targets can be sighted over smaller models. In practice it rarely matters because of the severe firing arc restrictions, and because sighting any model in an opposing squad is enough. You also wind up splitting fire a LOT more in 2e than you'd think. Losing split fire entirely was actually one of the bigger complaints when the edition change rolled out. Letting you fire through models in the same squad was partly a quick-fix for that. A whole bunch of the tweaks in 4e were trying to get around people using precise unit placement and range fuckery to "snipe" exactly the models they wanted out of an enemy unit, as well as prevent the defender from playing shell games with wounds to avoid losing specific models.

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.

10th edition was my first edition of 40K, I've seen a lot of people say that 8th edition was fun with Index books, which look like proto-codices? Was there stuff about 8th that was largely considered bad?
>>
>>97217302
5th had shittier LOS, shitter terrain rules, assaults had issues, vehicles became very dominant, but the worst shit was the wound allocation system(if the models in your unit were the same but had multiple wounds, you had to keep allocating to one model until it was dead, then move to the next and the next etc, but if your unit had the option to kit out everyone with different gear like Ork Nobz you could spread the wounds around so you wouldn't take any casualties until you'd taken enough wounds to force you to loop back around to the first guy - it got even fucky-wuckier when you threw in characters and assaults that included multiple units) and the codexes(which tied all the flavourful subfaction rules in your army to specific Special Characters and took away a lot of options - Guard are a perfect example, with their previous 'dex giving you huge flexibility to make the army you wanted even to the point of playing an all-infiltrating Light Infantry regiment or taking units of Vets in heavy armour, while in 5th you could have ONE infiltrating Vet squad and you had to buy Catachan Sergeant Harker to get it, and you could have ONE Grenadier unit and you had to buy a specific Cadian dude to get that, it was shit).

There are exactly three good ways to play 40K depending on your preference.

If you want whacky wahoo wahey 80's nostalgia or want to play a borderline-RPG, you play Rogue Trader.

If you want Herohammer, you play 2nd.
(cont...)
>>
>>97226123
>>97217302
(...cont)
If you want to play Warhammer 40,000, you play 4th edition core rules with a mix of codices; 4th ones up to and including Tau(after this they changed their design philosophy with an eye on 5th), the latest 3rd edition one for everything else. You have the full range of content from both 3rd and 4th editions to draw on - campaigns, WD rules, Chapter Approved, some of the FW books, the Journal, even some "fan"dexes that were written by GW dudes in their spare time like Huckleberry's Mechanicus list - and none of the NuHammer garbage to deal with - no Primaris, no Primarchs, no Redditcrons, no Ward-era Grey Knight retardation. I started in 2nd but 4th is where 40K peaked as far as I'm concerned, it's the bowl of porridge that's Just Right.
>>
Been kind of working on some custom 8th edition stuff lately since I've been playing it a lot. Custom cards and datasheets if anyone wants to see. Honestly I've had an idea in mind this week to create a sort of "alternate" 8th edition ruleset with some stuff from other editions and redone Primaris.

No right answer except priests. Friars and their superiors shouldn't be used for a player class unless it's an alternative to a Cleric. Something like a cleric/fighter multiclass attempt that isn't a Paladin, who is more a member of the church and not an official. I think maybe a Celestial Warlock if you're playing DnD or something? If you're talking an NPC, then yeah more fire power like a bishop would be fine but if they're heading a church they don't have the free time to come over.
tldr:

The emperor being immortal and responsible for humanity's progress since pre-history is spin written by a fanatical church. He wasn't 10 feet tall, the most powerful psyker ever etc. that's just how his legend has grown over the 10k years since he fell.

Next you'll act like the primarchs were actually his "sons" and not just warlords he recruited and put in charge of the legions during the crusades. Probably with some obviously bullshit, overly complex backstory involving teleportation and time dilation to explain the hundreds of years difference in ages of some of them.
