Shit GM Thread, because while you players are awful, there are some really shit GMs out there too.
>GM advertises game as a destroyed world by demons and whatever and people trying to live through or retake the world
>sounds good, throw my application in and get in
>trying to make a character from a destroyed noble house destroyed from said demons
>no info or lore or anything so just make one background that can fit in
>ask GM if it's okay and if I can fill it in with finer details
>he just says nah you're good
>is there a map?
>he just gives me some random borders map that looks like it was generated from some website
>yeah choose a region where your noble house was from I'm still working on the details
>his username is some pretentious TheLoreMaster btw
>whatever as long as he can provide a good story as the game goes on

>me and other players make our characters
>he then tells us to create a shared backstory

Anyone got stories of when they were a shit GM?
>Playing call of cthulhu.
>Running a pre-written adventure in a hunted house.
>One player immediately recognizes it.
>Try to deny it and throw in some curveballs from other adventures.
>He recognizes those too and immediately knows what to do.
>End up ending the game early with some dumb plot thread of there being a haunted video game console and series of haunted books a poltergeist of a child was reenacting.
In hindsight, I should of just did the original pre-written adventure instead of trying to make some half-assed Frankenstein thing.

For me, I don't have any particular moments but I had a bad habit of envisioning some cool scene and then trying to force the game towards it and panicking if things went off the rails. Lost a few shitty and a few good players doing it, but I figured out what I was doing wrong after the 3rd time around thankfully and now I just feel stupid for not catching myself the first time.

Which trove has 4AD stuff?

Looking for a starter pack, want to give the game a try. There are so many expansions and supplements out there, it’s a little overwhelming.

I also hear there are a bunch of lewd supplement by Erick Bouchard, which all seem to have been scrubbed from the web? And Erick transitioned? Maybe that had something to do with it?

There’s also Affairs of the Heart which sounds… titillating.

Anyways, looking for stuff. Halp

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

>what is the most streamlined way to prepare a hexmap for my group of Pathfinder players to get a few sessions of play out of
Anon gave you a great answer, but as an alternative suggestion, consider not prepping your own map at all and using one of the Wilderlands of High Fantasy maps. They're a little bit harder to read than the colorful Basic-style maps, but the playability is unmatched, and if you want to expand the area of play there are lots more maps ready to hand. You can just plonk your dungeon down in any hex that seems reasonable. Alternatively there are also various remakes of the original Outdoor Survival map that was recommended for use in the original D&D box set from 1974; pic related is one. I hope you enjoy it, Anon!

>>97284203
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he made them as supplementary material for an ASE game he was running. It looks like all his stuff for it is on the All Dead Generations blog now, together with some of his embarrassing political rambling.

>How is labyrinth lord?
It's B/X, so it's good. Personally I like the way he implemented addon AD&D material (in the Advanced Edition Companion) better than the way Norman did it for OSE, but that's a matter of taste.

Welcome, friend. You seem to have a good measure of "the spirit of the game" and I'm sure you'll have a great campaign going forward. Others gave you fantastic advice. GFC is an absolute treasure as is Melan (the Beyond Fomalhaut fellow linked above). I'd also recommend Prince of Nothing's Age of Dusk blog, though he primarily does module reviews. His musings are good stuff, though, and his No Artpunk module contest collections are rock solid. I would also urge you to poke around old articles from magazines like Fight On! and Dragon. Lots of stuff to shamelessly steal for your games in there.
As someone who converted his group from PF and 5E to AD&D, I feel it's crucial to set the hook early. I don't mean in a storygame way, mind you, but give them something they want to get done. A solid dungeon that they can't reasonably finish in a handful of sessions, but with the promise of more treasure if they push on. Something like that. Obviously you have a better measure of your players than we do, but if you are enjoying the OSR style then you'll have to convince your group, through gameplay, that it should be your primary game after the first few sessions. You could run one of the established classics like Keep on the Borderlands or what have you. Or you could mess around with Appendix A from the DMG and roll your own dungeon. If you go that route, I recommend being a bit malleable with some of the interpretations of the results. It's a great way to start getting a dungeon hammered out, but don't be beholden to what it creates. Use the results for inspiration and guidance, but get creative with it! GFC has a great video regarding traps that shows a great method for making your own.

(Cont.)
As far as making a setting goes, I recommend not fleshing out everything before you start. Give yourself an aesthetic you're aiming for (mine is "somewhere between Tolkien and Conan by way of Frazetta"), decide what sort of biome you want to start the players in (frozen north, deep woods, coastal region etc.) and hammer out the rough shape. At least one major city if appropriate, maybe some hamlets and villages, key landmarks. Then establish some basic stuff regarding political things like rulership and antagonizing forces. I feel that things move much more smoothly if you just let things develop organically though you may prefer a more rigid method. Beyond that, just go for it! Sit down and start putting stuff to paper. I'm sure you'll have something great shaping up before you know it.

Also, I second Wilderlands of High Fantasy. The booklet can be a bit difficult to parse but it's fantastic for stocking hexmaps.
>>97284550
I really like LL. I would like to pick up a copy but don't really have the need at the moment as I don't play B/X. I may pick up 2E when the physical book releases.

I'd have more respect for all the WAACfags infesting HH if they were at least honest about it. Instead they bitch and whine about the rules being wrong when it doesn't support their "narrative"
>>
So, the most resilient Astartes are Salamanders because of their trait, Iron Hands because of their trait and units, and Death Guard because of their units. Is that right?
Every Iron Hand is hard to kill, and their special terminators even more so. But for the Death Guard, it's just a specific unit and their characters, innit? They are great, but I sometimes wonder how it relates back at to the spirit of the fluff and rules we were presented since HH1.
The Death Guard is a great legion, to be sure. But they seem better at jogging that at being hardy idk. Like, Phraetus also are EW and Gal Vorbak are 3W but we don't call the Word Bearers a resilience legion
>>
>>97285451
The death guard reputation wasn't for being extraordinarily tough in the HH, it was for being enduring, IE, they were the better iron warriors not the better iron hands. Grinding assaults and all that.

I told people different start times for a game based on their level of flakiness and got them to show up at the same time.

I sometimes sneak in Magical Realm shit like the party being hunted by brown Amazons who think they'd father strong daughters.

I sometimes run games in secret because I don't want to hurt the feelings of friends whose playstyle I hate or think their personalities would clash with those of my favorite players.

I don't consider online games real RPGs. It's like the equivalent of condom sex with a woman you find unattractive. You didn't have sex, you fapped into another person and your subconscious knows it.

Whenever someone here asks for a system recommendation, I always suggest 5e. Especially if it's a modern game. I've also noticed that I'm not the only one who does it.

oh cool, so it's mostly building a PC and making a story from the implied lore? instead of say, a few pages of encounters to pick from?
>>
>>97285155
Pretty much. There are cyoas that provide encounters for you to imagine your character dealing with or even jave mechanics for determining the outcome based on the options picked prior. The way someone usually goes about playing is picking their options and posting the build, optionally with meta reasoning for their picks and a bit on how they imagine things playing out. Here it's pretty standard to include a somewhat in depth bio.
>>
>>97285155
JITE and Martial Path are active here right now, with JITE itself being OC made by thread anons. Fantasy Village is less usual, being a heavily sartre'd (houseruled) nsfw cyoa repurposed into some kind of survival crafting MMORPG isekai.
>>
>>97285155
>instead of say, a few pages of encounters to pick from?
There are missions sometimes, but they are more like prompts for the imagination rather than something structured and you can just ignore them and do your own thing. Once again, some do have structure, like the aforememtioned Life Chronicles, but most are very open.
This general is based much more on the open ones, mechanical ones don't really work with our MO. The current runs here are the ones posted at the start of the thread, they have all the compiled information on other PCs and the stories/content up to now. You can just pick one, make a character, post it, and then start writing for it or discussing it in thread. The other general is about the same, but they don't write stories about the characters and they are all separate, they don't interact. There have been a couple of exceptions but it's not how it's supposed to work and even those were not really the same thing as here.
>>
>>97285457
>Fantasy Village is less usual, being a heavily sartre'd (houseruled) nsfw cyoa repurposed into some kind of survival crafting MMORPG isekai.
It's also active. And it's not sartre'd that much. The mechanics, as little of them as there are, were not changed much, it's only the setting that has been changed to remove the more degenerate aspects of the original. It's a very freeform cyoa by nature, it's supposed to be like that.

That isn't degenerate. The flavor is intentionally vague as to whether you're summoning an actual fiend/fey/whatever or creating a simulacrum of one, so they tacked "spirit" on there--but that's a question of word choice, nothing more. It doesn't affect play patterns or encourage outdoing the dedicated "swings a sword" character while dumping the dedicated "swing a sword" stats.

A thread for talking about players doing dumb shit and acting like retards.

>Be me
>Running short campaigns for new groups at the LGS
>Players are all tasked with defending some random hamlet in a backwater province from bandits that are planning to sack it and haul everyone off into slavery
>First group is (rightly) terrified of a fair fight
>Lures the bandits into an ambush by getting help from a neighboring village
>raid their camp after they retreat and destroy the group
>Second group tries brute force
>Roll up on the bandit camp directly and alone
>Talk their way into meeting with the leader when they rushed him
>Catch him offguard
>Are also playing optimized characters
>Slaughter him and his guards and convince half of the bandit group to work for them, rest scatter
>The third group

Today I will remind them

the paid dm defenders have always said they help people with no friends, but the last few months they are being promoted as
>fun for friends
>give your dm a break
>let your group try a new system

im talking ginny d, reddit, forum posts, irl in-store. in all seriousness will people fall for this instead of having one of their friends dm

I know país GMs but they works in a club, so you're paying for the space moreso than the GM.
>>
>nobody referencing the enshittification of video games
2020 came and went and the normoids are leaving. What we have now, however, is a very solid AAA vidya -> indie vidya -> TTRPG pipeline as people grow increasingly dissatisfied with the gaming industry's offerings. This is the main reason paid DMing won't go anywhere: gamers want to GAME, they know forever GMs have the best games, and they will gladly pay (because hey, 10-20 bucks a session is better than 80+DLC+season pass + loot boxes + time-gated microtransactions + deluxe preorder bonus + playstation plus + pokemon home + tip for a game everyone stops playing in a month)

>have to put in at least twice the time to maintain a comparable standard of living
>have to suborn your own enjoyment of the hobby to that of your clients
>can't even count on most small business resources because they won't recognize what you're doing
>have to file a Schedule C
>time spent on games for your friends is literally just more of the shit you do at work
Sounds like a fantastic recipe for burning yourself out on something you would otherwise enjoy.
