>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

I love MFZ for the idea, but the implementation fucking sucks. You'd think building around Lego sets you would see some serious mech creation rules that reward you for going out of your way in designing some fun miniatures instead you get anemic rules right romp that is at best good for introduction into wargaming and then forgotten.

>Napoleonic line warfare doesn't work
>But medieval line warfare does, because... Uhhh
Anon do you realise Napoleonic troops and formations were MUCH faster, more mobile and less static than medieval or Renaissance ones, and unlike not!Medieval shit, Napoleonic armies had an actual chance of countering casters with their highly mobile and long range artillery. Lastly, Napoleonic tactics worked against 'magic-like' effrcts like shot at with grapeshot, artillery, Mortars, etc., where as medieval warfare isn't. Yet all fantasy warfare is depicted as medieval warfare?
Your argument is very poorly thought out

When did Warhammer go from being a game about making themed armies in cool campaigns into being a sweatlord tournament game where people whine about balance and how your models must be Games Workshop approved with the right weapons and no kitbashing? What even happened to campaign play?

The Meta min-max is what makes the game unfun. But people like tomwin and make everything in to a competition thats like work.
>>
>>97207948
This shit is also more fun in single player vidya than tabletop.
>>
>>97217103
I'm going to advocate for skill expression, I used to go undefeated with a fucking charmer deck during very toxic formats in Yu-Gi-Oh by virtue of how much fucking gas I could shit on the field and summon/interrupt between a synchro engine 4* spellcaster support and kaijus to enter rank4/8 plays.

I was not meta or engaging with it but dear lord I still remember someone complaining I had 2 negates 2 boardwipes and 2 targeted interruptions with a discard from his hand in his turn protection and another negate coming while I still kept 4 cards on hand before my turn ended, only then I understood that I cooked cancer with a joke archetype.

Sometimes you don't need to follow meta to break a format, just doing redundancy and playing as intended works.

For the record before blood angels were buffed, before transport and movement rules were changed and reavers were buffed I was already playing list with them to absolutely fuck with people in their deployment and leave hem without a single scoring unit or HQ turn 1. Meta is far more than just copying lists or following a similar style of play, finding a way to prevent the other players from fucking playing before they even get to deploy or end up in a disadvantage because they can deploy/redeploy properly is a different kind of meta that often goes ignored until it explodes in you face several times in a tournament.
>>
>>97195868
It didn't really change. The metachasers are just a loud minority on the internet. The majority of the people do the hobby like they want, at home with friends. Nobody cares for the torunaments and the meta that much. The "pro"-gamers just want too believe they are the majority. Don't listen to them. Fuck them!

Aren't these faces based on the faces in-game already, just dressed up as different chapters? the black space wolf looks like the grappling hook guy, just with a less mangled face and an eyepatch (which is stupid)
>>
>>97217594
Whoa whoa whoa you can't just say that all black people look the same
>>
>>97217396
it's a miscalculation because they're including the faces as self-inserts for people who want to play the most stereotypical version of the chapter possible
fewer people would care if the game featured multiple space wolves and it featured non-Fenrisians recruited as primaris marines

I don't know if the question was ever addressed as to whether Fenris actually has enough climatic or genetic diversity to have races corresponding to the original races of Earth. Knowing modern culture diktats, the answer is obviously "YES, everywhere is as diverse as the modern UK", but being completely fair and asking the question of writers in the 90s looking at this from a sci-fi perspective, what would they have said?
Bear in mind, there's tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of years of isolation that went into making the IRL races different, whereas 40k only has planets populated ~20,000 years at most (pre-imperium). Some planets could have had time-warp shenanigans during the pre-imperial dark age, but even then, divergence would be less likely to happen internal to the planets, but rather the planet's population would become distinct from the baseline human norm, especially if the planet had the culture and technology to allow intercontinental travel, as most would have.
We know more or less that Fenris:
>has no climate equivalent to Africa; the warmest regions are probably comparable to Canada (no idea about sunlight/UV protection)
>has a small, low-turnover population for an Imperial planet, but a high population for its tech level
>inter-continental travel exists because sailing is a huge part of their culture, even before the imperium
>the planet might have started as a viking-werewolf theme park with genetic engineering (its inhabitants might be skewed towards viking-like workers, but presumably people from all over the human colonies visited and settled/were trapped during the DAOT)
>>
>>97217714
>(if not hundreds of thousands)

No, modern humans were bottlenecked far more recently than that.

Most intersex people are cisgender.
The doctor pulls out the baby, says "yep it's a girl" and decades later that person, now a grown woman, discovers she has some freaky chromosomes or internal organs.

It's simple. They wanted to make another joke set. He's always said that pitching them to his boss is hard but because "what reason do we give players to buy joke cards that can't be used anywhere". In the past, the answer was full art lands. But now full art lands are in every single set and they're no longer unique or special. So how do you get people to buy the joke cards? Make them black-bordered and thus Commander/Tournament legal. But of course, they did this in the most awful way possible. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

>>
>>97217244
Not sure what that anon's workflow is, but you can start right now. There's a bit of a learning curve, but to just kitbash stuff in Blender is pretty easy.
Get Blender, learn basic UI, get the files (you can work directly with .stl files), and just do stuff. If you are just printing minis, you don't need to give a fuck about geometry. If you want to just do basic stuff, you can probably do with just a slicer software for the printer. If you want to do complex stuff, you might look into sculpting. Blender sculpting tools are okay and mostly enough, but if you enjoy it, I would recommend pirating ZBrush somewhere.

It's a piece of cardboard that many companies are selling to idiots to bolster their income fro mtheir games. Of coruse sold separately. Early DnD was all about useless merch, and this one can be made for any game of choice.
Most games rightfully dropped it, but the ones geared for fleecing their own consumers (won't even call them customers) will be selling it.

>>97211999
What a tragic waste of good trips
Also: if you need a secret roll, roll the dice in a cup and don't lift the cup until you need that outcome. If you don't understand why it's the best possible way of handling it, you might be retarded.
Everything else is in your own notes (reminder to never write more than a single A4 page, no matter fucking what)
>b-but rules
Not a single GM screen contains useful informations, especially when it comes to rules. It always lists basic shit that you will know after reading the book and not having room temperature IQ.
>>
>>97211837
Nta but the other anon already said that: virtually NOBODY prints those anymore for quite a while. You are either left with games that pull "muh tradition" (of selling useless merch), games who's creators are dumb enough to think this is an actual tradition and a handful of games that try to squeeze maximum buck out of a one-time buyer (so they are part of a "starter" kit that costs extra and consists of useless shit that looks catchy for a newfag).
I'm in this hobby since the tail end of the 90s. I saw "industrial grade" screens grand total of thrice, all three on official promo events. I saw people use screens of any sort only a couple of times, and each and every time it was the same story: someone had no clue how to handle a secret roll, so they did the dumbest thing possible and rolled behind a cover, then stated the outcome.
>>
>>97214597
>All that shit
That's just your opinion, man.
Some people like having resources for a session. Some people like keeping shit hidden. It's all a matter of personal opinion and preferences.

A good GM screen should have a bunch of tables for on the fly ass pulls.
>>
>>97214648
Why would you need to buy a printed one to know what it is? The idea comes up often enough in almost any discussion about tabletop RPGs that even non-players will learn what they are quickly enough, and a decent proportion of pdf downloads (legal or not) come with them.
>>
>>97211997
>>97214648
Yet again, the question was "what is that?" and the reply why "have you ever engaged with the hobby" because screens are not new and not unheard of. We're not talking about who uses them or how not every game has one. Just the fact that they are a common enough thing to know of if you're actually in the hobby. I've run games for a couple decades now and don't use one, but I know what they are and why they exist.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Shouldn't have to "fix" anything. I want OSRIC to be an AD&D retroclone, not interested in Matt's House Rules or having to go through the rulebook looking for what I need to undo to actually play AD&D. Those changes are a deal breaker for me.

>>
>>97217349
>Can't happen. Lawyer shit.
Nah, that's bullshit. OSE-Classic didn't have to make any changes at all.

And the changes Finch has made to the Monk are to "fix" it because he thinks it's too powerful and difficult to qualify for, he's said as much in interviews and even in the OSRIC 3 rulebook. He didn't have to change the Paladin, Ranger, Druid, or Assassin, so there's no legal reason why he would have had to change the Monk.

What's the best version of BRP?
I hear that it has pretty quick and lethal combat, and is very much for more grounded games, which is the kind of games I prefer to run. I also really enjoyed the fanmade Fallout PnP system that used percentile dice, and the combat in that.
However I am also aware that apparently Chaosium released newer versions that apparently were bad.
Which one is good?
>>
I don't think the new editions are bad. They do have more options and try to cover more universal ground, which may or may not be just useless bloat to you, especially considering that is all in the default character sheets.
Since you like lethal and grounded combat, you could also look into Mythras as an even more lethal and combat focused D100 game alternative.
