Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs! Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help: >n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0 >Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128 >Need a starter dungeon? >>97283686>>97283851Welcome, friend. You seem to have a good measure of "the spirit of the game" and I'm sure you'll have a great campaign going forward. Others gave you fantastic advice. GFC is an absolute treasure as is Melan (the Beyond Fomalhaut fellow linked above). I'd also recommend Prince of Nothing's Age of Dusk blog, though he primarily does module reviews. His musings are good stuff, though, and his No Artpunk module contest collections are rock solid. I would also urge you to poke around old articles from magazines like Fight On! and Dragon. Lots of stuff to shamelessly steal for your games in there. As someone who converted his group from PF and 5E to AD&D, I feel it's crucial to set the hook early. I don't mean in a storygame way, mind you, but give them something they want to get done. A solid dungeon that they can't reasonably finish in a handful of sessions, but with the promise of more treasure if they push on. Something like that. Obviously you have a better measure of your players than we do, but if you are enjoying the OSR style then you'll have to convince your group, through gameplay, that it should be your primary game after the first few sessions. You could run one of the established classics like Keep on the Borderlands or what have you. Or you could mess around with Appendix A from the DMG and roll your own dungeon. If you go that route, I recommend being a bit malleable with some of the interpretations of the results. It's a great way to start getting a dungeon hammered out, but don't be beholden to what it creates. Use the results for inspiration and guidance, but get creative with it! GFC has a great video regarding traps that shows a great method for making your own.
>>97285258(Cont.)As far as making a setting goes, I recommend not fleshing out everything before you start. Give yourself an aesthetic you're aiming for (mine is "somewhere between Tolkien and Conan by way of Frazetta"), decide what sort of biome you want to start the players in (frozen north, deep woods, coastal region etc.) and hammer out the rough shape. At least one major city if appropriate, maybe some hamlets and villages, key landmarks. Then establish some basic stuff regarding political things like rulership and antagonizing forces. I feel that things move much more smoothly if you just let things develop organically though you may prefer a more rigid method. Beyond that, just go for it! Sit down and start putting stuff to paper. I'm sure you'll have something great shaping up before you know it.Also, I second Wilderlands of High Fantasy. The booklet can be a bit difficult to parse but it's fantastic for stocking hexmaps.>>97284550I really like LL. I would like to pick up a copy but don't really have the need at the moment as I don't play B/X. I may pick up 2E when the physical book releases.
>>97283513If you don't know how to compile c++ code then maybe you shouldn't be in the hobby. Also, hello!
>>97285291>2e labyrinth lord.I didn't even know this was coming out. I thought the main creator retired from making stuff. Looksl ike he is moving away from b/x and ogl in general for 2e.
>>97285507>>97286253From what I saw last time I looked into it, it seems that LL 2e is gonna be bollocks, sadly.

How do I make a campaign revolving around the gimmick Arios Theoman's sword Escude revolves around work?To explain>Arios is the "hero" of the setting>He has a magical sword that gets more powerful the more humanity dies>It's a dilemma - he needs the sword to be at least 30 percent powered up to be able to even hurt the demons ravaging his world, but to do that he needs to allow humans to die - or even actively curtail their population himself so as to paradoxically save them It's a killer concept - but I feel like as a campaign it becomes hard to gamify since the players could literally just do nothing, allow the sword to get powered up, and kill the big bad without any moral dilemma at all
>>9728481830 percent of the world's current population relative to when he picked up the sword. So if the population is a million when he picks it up, 300,000 people have to die, not sure if it's net or margin
>>97284375That's retarded.
>>97284375Why didn't they make a magic sword that didn't need people to die and was just at 100% all the time?
>>97284375I guess you could give each PC a distinct legendary weapon or artifact that gives various buffs depending on the current human population. It could be something as simple as "+X to all stats", as crucial as "ignore X points of any demon's innate supernatural damage resistance", or it could be something unique to every weapon. You should also have a "human population" statistic that the PCs can check with their weapons at any time. It doesn't have to give an exact number. You can just give a hint like "the weapon feels colder than when you last held it, as if the sollective life force of humanity is dwindling" or an abstract rating like "3 out of 10 jewels on the legendary scepter's head have faded black."When the PCs complete a quest, you might adjust the human population depending on how well the PCs succeeded in their quest. You might determine this with a random roll, use a character of modifiers depending on how many objectives were accomplished, or just go by vibes. If a PC dies, you might allow the weapon to be passed along to a new PC, or you might allow the old PC to be revived at great cost to the human population (it might require willing sacrifices, or maybe a fraction of the remaining population just gets magically Thanos-snapped at random). I think allowing PCs to revive at a cost is a neat idea, since it creates dynamic difficulty (if the PCs do well, then more people are saved, but things get harder for them; if the PCs are struggling, then they can just power up at the cost of human lives) and saves the trouble of having to roll up a new character. If the PCs choose the easy path to power, or too many humans die, then make sure they feel the consequences. Places where the PCs can rest and resupply become sparser, replaced by ghost towns. Human allies and support networks become fewer and more expensive. Demons become more numerous (but not individually more powerful). And so on.
>>97286300forgive me, I might be having a stroke>sollective life forcecollective>character of modifierschart of modifiers
Is it really good etiquite to have seriously "heavy" and depressing themes in your tabletop campaign as opposed to just lighthearted evening fun or cynically detached/ironic grimderpness?
>>97286063Well that would depend entirely on the people playing the game, now wouldn't it?
>>97286166Sure, but no one actually knows this prior to (presumably awkward) experiences. And some things don't depend on anyone because they are entirely inoffensive and people will just want to game anyway. But fooling the PCs in an elaborate plot guided by an otgerworldly entity to destroy the entire world because it is fundamentally base and sordid after being witness to irreconcileable suffering and never once having been validated in any significant way?
>>97286063even the most comedic games should have some stakes to the characters' actions/choices
>>97286063Is your party on board? If yes, then have fun. If no, then it's fucking terrible. If you're playing with people you know, then it's easy to figure out. If you're playing with strangers, this is why you have a meetup to talk about the game and create characters together so that everyone can find out what everyone else wants from the game and kick the most problematic people before they kill the game
>>97286063It's good etiquette to talk with the people you play with to agree on the game you want to play, then to play that game. Which should be obvious to anyone that has interacted with human beings before.
Magic should be rare, mysterious, superstitious. It should take time to use and be exhausting to cast When did fantasy magic and wizards turn in Avatar the Last Airbender shooting fire and lightning out their assholes?
>>97275520The perfect circle.
>>97264376As always, this is posturing storyfag/armchair designer nonsense that doesn't work with real continuous gameplay.
>>97237174Have finding black cats "curse" your PC and salt repel evil spirits. >>97247843There's overlap. Lodoss was directly d&d. Early games like Wizardry or FFI were still attempts to convert tabletop to a machine. They have Goblins/Mimics because d&d had it.

I've spent the last year, studying, and designing a custom Arthurian set, originally intended to be based on Le Morte d'Arthur (like how P3k was based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms). However, as I continued to study, and look into different (and some obscure sources) this turned into a much more wider net. This set, which is no where near finished includes>Welsh Triads and The Magnibong>Pre-Vulgate Arthur traditions>Vulgate/Post Vulgate/Lancelot cycles>some English/Welsh fairy tales>and even a bit of the Victorian Arthurian revival (especially for art). I avoided the Italian and German romances entirely, and tried not to include weird outliners except when needed. Outside of art, nothing is sourced from the 20th century or onward. Also all art is public domain. I'm mainly posting here for feedback. Some will be art recommendations, flavor text (especially sourced) will be always welcomed.Comment too long.
