Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Sorry, should've mentioned I've read those too.

I feel like after 2-3 sessions, I'd be getting the feel for it, but it feels more alien to me on session 1 than not, and if I were actually gonna run this with some friends, even preparing them for all the 'differences' from what they're used to and getting them on board conceptually, it'd really throw a wrench in if I was actually running it with that bad of a feel.

That's why I'm really interested in just seeing some play examples.
>>
>>97266862
I've looked. There really isn't anything that shows you the process from behind the screen. Bandit's Keep on YouTube is probably your best shot.
However I would advise just writing out in your own way a flowchart or procedure notes after reading the Moldvay Basic rules. Strictly following the procedure should be all you need as an experienced DM to find yourself playing in the OSR style. My own procedure notes in picrel may be of use, at least as an illustrative tool of what I'm talking about. Start the game as close to dungeon crawling as possible when you begin play.
>>
>>97266427
>Old School Essentials
it's good as reference but you should read b/x first since it has actual advice, explanations and examples on how play looks like.
>>
>>97266862
You're overthinking this. Just play. You'll make mistakes initially, and you'll improve with time. No big deal.

Also, for decades kids have learnt to play D&D without watching videos on YouTube. You really don't need them.
>>
>>97266962
I dont concur with this advice entirely. While its true that Burger King has some good videos, he has a lot and its very hard to tell them apart at a glance. You're better off downloading subtitles off Daddy Rolled a 1 and having an AI summarize them for you (given the two hour video runtime). Focused mostly on B/X, mostly surface level, with more context, history, comparison to LBB/OD&D/AD&D it seems to me the better deal, if it must be a YouTuber.

Bigfoot is actually a subspecies of humans that have evolved to survive harsh climates. Their fur is so dense that it makes them less agile, but offers a small resistance to bladed weapons, similar to chainmail offering resistance against shark bites.

There are scattered, highly advanced structures dot the planet that are maintained by mysterious machines belonging to a long-gone civilization that predates other civilized lifeforms by millennia. Intense study has yet to reveal the originally intended function of these vast citadels or how they were truly created, though several cities have been built around them as the durability of their construction or just general location often proves very useful for defense.

The South is essentially what would have happened had Justinian's Empire succeeded. There's a strong united Church, a powerful Emperor backed up by military governors and a complex bureaucracy. The Church plays second fiddle to the whims of the Emperor and the senate. The league comprises five major powers:
>The Second Imperium: Greek in appearance and character. The big dogs.
>The Kingdom (can't figure out a name): Englishmen aesthetically, vaguely German in appearance. Saxonish.
>Orange Republic: Dutchmen. They're the 'rogue traders' of the setting.
>A Viking kingdom. They've recently converted and want to prove their devotion... BY KILLING HEATHENS!

And many minor powers including:
>Some fucked up Calvinist group.
>Mafiosi.
>Closeted gay monks.
>Rogue Gnomish bankers.

Alexander isn't Alexander. He's actually just a fucked-up meat puppet reanimated by Yakub after Earth destroyed itself in a self-inflicted nuclear war. Alexander will pave the way to a great empire, a path of bodies drenched in the blood of innocents, a road leading to hubris and misery.

RIFTS! The science fantasy world of post-apoc cyborgs, wizards, dragons, ninjas, giant mecha, super-nazis, robot ninjas, vampires, underwater kingdoms, remnant human supertech civilizations and everything you can imagine all rolled into one setting where interdimensional RIFTS have pierced Earth's fabric and turned it into a playground for aliens and monsters!

Plus other Palladium Games about superheroes, zombies, classic fantasy, supernaturals investigation and more.

Yeah, that is pretty damn cringe. It reminds me of Washington cities who had to put BLM signs on their windows to hope to avoid antifa smashing their stores or homes. I see see those signs up and I still think they are living in fear.

I think it's pretty pathetic. Both in that the threat of these things needing to be put in ttrpgs turned out to be toothless threats and that how these writers rolled over for the softest representation of terrorism.

I don't care about multicultural, if there were any human city anywhere in the setting where you could pander to the multicultists it's Marienburg. The issue I have is that's the kind of language they use right before they retcon the city to be 200km wide with a population like modern day London or some shit, because if a setting has dragons in it then everything has to be HUEG right? It stinks of the Blackfire Pass thing again. Hey hopefully I'm just getting reflexively mad about nothing, but I'm just tired boss.

Why were so many of the "OG" game designers insufferable faggots? It seems like the vast majority of game designers from the 70s and 80s were self-obsessed dickheads who openly hated and looked down on their customer base. There were obviously exceptions, and some like Gygax would go on to regret and apologize for it, but still, what made so many "professionals" back then such fags?

Pic related: WFRP author James Wallis's response to a letter criticizing how railroaded The Enemy Within campaign was.

D&D grew out of the wargaming scene. A lot of games from that era featured options for long running campaigns with primitive RPG mechanics while still remaining inherently adversarial. Like e.g. Circus Maximus was a racing game that allowed players to carry their chariot teams over from race to race while investing xp to improve their drivers, chariots and horses. Players were strongly encouraged to do things like wreck opposing chariots and run over one another's drivers to reset their opponents' progress. That was the gaming ecosystem that produced the first generation of dungeon masters. They simply took that mindset and carried it over to D&D and other RPGs.

I thought it was allowed if you place a reference to the original.

A lot of higher CR "creatures" are smarter than 99% of NPCs. Most demons, devils, a lot of aberrations and so on.
>Besides, DMs who thrown NPCs with WBL at their players will be screwed when the players win and just take all that WBL for themselves from a single encounter.
To be fair I have personal bias, our DM was in the "as long as it makes sense it goes" camp. So we got shit like if we got into a ambush it wouldn't be 2-3 guys, no, it would be fucking 12 orcs with bows and spears. At level 1. And if you gave NPC/monsters time to prepare? They actually would prepare for you as much as they can. Getting their magical items was a minimum requirement to survive.

...was also the first third-party one, with its first product released in 1976. Judges Guild's Wilderlands of High Fantasy is the only setting you'll ever need.
>18 hexmaps at 5-mile hex size, with a cool thing (ruin/relic, castle/keep, town, or monster lair) every 5th or 6th hex
>Covering an area the size of the Mediterranean Sea

>Huge aesthetic variety, lots of different flavor and creature types
>Home of the iconic City-State of the Invincible Overlord, a wonderfully dysfunctional city
>There is exactly ONE nation-state in the setting, and it's the size of Belgium. Everything else is city-states and fortified towns
>Life is grimdark as shit for regular people, think Bronze Age Collapse tier. Child mortality is high as shit, only the lucky strong or brilliant make it to the ripe old age of 35.
>No ancient conspiracies or secret societies puppeteering from the shadows--geopolitics are very primitive
>Tech is schizophrenic, with some towns having just invented the wheel to and some cities having discovered calculus
>But despite all that, you can make a real difference with your friends! Kill the asshole Overlord and see if you can do a better job.
