As someone who played warhammer fantasy before I am baffeled how important named named characters are for the 40k armies, in fantasy they were fluff pieces that were banned in tournaments.

I really do not like that I have to play angron instead of a no name greater demon or korn, I used to enjoy playing with my "own" army with namless lords and heroes.
>>
>>97233646
We didn't gatekeep hard enough.
>>
>>97222984
I don't mind the Horus Heresy, but Primarchs turn 40k into Marvel. Who gives a shit about chapters sacrificing themselves to stop a daemon primarch when Bobby or Lion can whoop their ass in a DBZ fight and save the day.
>>
>Monopose models, they look good but ruin customisation
>Unit upgrades being free ruins the fun of list building since there's no reason to pick anything other then the most optimised choices
>The whole 'a unit can only have what comes in the box' autism (unless you're havocs)
>The weird ork boyz situation where they made a schizophrenic 10 man kit and then wasted resources making beast snaggas instead
>Emperor's Children not getting predators or other standard marine stuff for no reason
>The primaris marine designer having a fetish for heavy stubbers
But most importantly, it feels increasingly less like a hobby and more like a corporate product
>>
>>97236405
The more mainstream something is, the more it becomes a corporate product. That's why we should have gatekept harder.

Have you ever roleplayed a female character?

Her being a female is a major character point: She was spared of the mining pits or the gallows, and "sold" to a nunnery to live out her life in "repentance and labor" after being branded on the cheek with a letter and the judge was lenient.

Incredibly gay. Settings should be only male. Just because you're the GM doesn't mean it's not gay for you to play a femnoid.

Not reading the rules is only a problem if you make it one. I ran a three year campaign of Dark Heresy and mostly just checked the armory and the occasional talent/trait for equipping NPCs, but mostly just vibed in whatever gear I could think of. I didn't worry about balancing encounters since I knew come tight spot the players would quickly flick through the book to find some rule that let them get out a spot, or just outmanouver me by actually knowing what their talents did.
I got to focus in designing the adventurers and players got to pull cool moves on unexpecting baddies.

A year later I finally read through the rules and realized that kino stuff like 1d5 weapons doing more crits, scattered grenades needing line of sight (or bouncing off walls), random mooks doing crits just like PCs, vehicles not having HP (just module damages until useless) or most of the psychic disciplines being actually from RT, BC or splatbooks was a real surprise to me.
>>
>>97230596
This holds to most games by <30 year olds these days, doubly so for D&D as they played some vidya and saw critical role and decided they play the ttrpg without bothering to learn the actual rules. When you point out how the actual rules say they go "uhh acshually the DM decides how the rules go". It's irredeemable shit all over.
>>
>>97235184
lol TRASH
>>
>>97235184
It sounds like you actually read the rules, though. You just didn't meticulously go through the list of all traits and gear items available, which is something I don't expect most GMs to do. In fact, it's the GM's job to make stuff like that up anyways. The GMs I have problems with are those who don't even know what dice or modifiers to use for basic skill checks. The GMs whose understanding of the game is so poor that I can't even play my character properly. Everything on my sheet might as not be there before the GM isn't even using the rules I need for my character to work.

>HE'S actually put together a group, with players, and is out there running the game

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Yeah, agreed. I actually don't think /2eg/ was started by Fishfag either because if you check the archives you can see him raging over it with his usual spittle-flecked, impotent fury. Just another case of him proving that he actually doesn't care about 2e at all.
>>
>>97235494
I think it depends a lot on how much you want to respect the Fomalhaut lore. Fundamentally though I think the easiest option would be to rotate the Yoon-Suin map 90° clockwise so the Gulf of Morays is the eastern end of the Sea of the Lost (and decide for yourself how much distance you want between the edges of the two maps). The climate on Fomalhaut is canonically being maintained by terraforming machines anyway, so I don't think you need to care too much about climate regions and so on.
>>
>>97236143
It looks good. I want to respect the original setting at least for the most part. I spent quite a while creating my own setting, got tired, and decided to use a pre-existing one that was similar to what I was creating, so I could run the game instead of endlessly creating setting.
The only thing that comes to mind after much thought is that slugmen are originally people, and they either became slugmen before the Fall, becouse were followers of a strange fashion/cult, or they turned into slugmen after Fall becouse of tea. The tea they drink, becouse prolonged abuse, gradually (over many generations) transforms humans into slugmen. And of completly devoit them from tea they gradually(over many generation) become humans again.
I'l take this theory as a working one; in any case, a trip to Yoon Suin will not happen anytime soon, if at all.
>>
>>97236310
Remember that Fomalhaut has a slug-god of pleasure. Page 17 of Voyage if you have that. Snolog is basically perfect for your purposes.

>Yes, it's the same guy, he has decided that because he can't get what he wants from us, that he's going to try and harass other threads..
Honestly, I think it's more sinister than that.
Soon as people asked 'Why the fuck are these two threads being Frankenstein'd together?' he was there and immediately hooting and waving his dick about how it was the nefarious chud illuminati from /osrg/ who did it for their own sinister purposes.

I think his plan was to falseflag and cause a shit fling between the two threads.
Fortunately for us God has made our enemy fucking retarded and thus it fell through.

Also, again, funny how that one post in 3.5 is always the one he turns to as proof that everyone else is crazy.
We know he's a falseflaggot 24/7, is it really much of a stretch for him to have made that one up as well?

Wanted to talk about advice on GMing, settings you prefer, and styles or issues you as a GM have. I generally tend to prefer dark fantasy or sci-fi settings rather than trying something a little different.

I also tend to have a style, depends on the system though, where i have a combat heavy session or two and then a more intrigue/exploration focused session. I have been working on how to better balance games I run, but trying to tie that to timing a game session gets tricky at times.

Another issue I noticed is that puzzle solving or investigative games can be a lot harder for a player to get into the mindset for than the dm. It is easy to think everything you planned makes sense when you thought it out in your head but the players might not have the same line of thought.

It sounds like you spent a long time running a game where there were no real consequences for anything, swerved into a game where there were serious but complex and unpredictable consequences for everything, and swerved again to make the consequences more straightforward and obvious. And now you're wondering why your players are struggling to keep up.
Did you discuss these changes with them, or just expect them to pick up "clues"?
>>
>>97232001
Have you tried putting in place systems to give players tips/answer their questions in a very explicit way?
I play Mini Six a lot, and one way you can spend a Hero Point (akin to inspiration in 5e) is to get info from the GM. Sometimes that's a "I'm stuck" but sometimes that's more like "Hey, GM, we're trying to X but worried about Y. What's your take?" and the GM makes a best faith attempt to put the players on the track they want either by saying "I wouldn't worry about Y" or reminding them of the Y expert they met two sessions back. Generally characters are more plugged-in to the world than your players can ever be, so it's not a cheat to give players a limited resource that mimics that connection.
Plus, if the way to replenish that resource is "go do hero shit" then you get a virtuous cycle of players knowing what to do and then getting it done.
>>
>>97218634
>As far as investigation games go, that tends to work better in dedicated systems
I'm using a dedicated system, is there anything different than normal for setting up?
>>
>>97233945
Not only was i clear about it, it was structured this way basically on their request.
>>97236121
I have one player who is playing an investigator, and has a built in "I'm stuck" mechanic. But he refuses to use it or gets frustrated when I just "give him the answer".
Another player also did a few things to effectively put him in contact with a god-like entity with near omniscience, but he also only uses it if he's completely lost.
I also do cut in as they're discussing something really wrong with something like "based on x, y, and z, your characters would not make that assumption but instead think something else" and they'll generally agree with this assessment.
>>
>>97236294

Since what I am making is inspired by a lot of /tg/ things like chess and dungeon and dragons and board games, I want to see opinions.

I am making something like your own tabletop single player battle.

The idea is that you have a party of 256 posible characters with their own traits, and then you put them in a map, like chess, and then see them simulate their behaviour.

So, my goal is to make an npc simulator, where you're like a dungeon master.

Dunno really what I am making, but hopefully anons here like my game.

Men who make/roleplay female characters, why do you?
Why do you think it bothers /tg/ so much?

Collectors (exclusive, you know the type) and """investors""" are parasites to a game. They contribute nothing to the actual game and I would argue even detract from the game because they think they know shit but don't.

I agree. I definitely like being able to get affordable copies of staples to play with; or the fact that it drives the higher rarity versions of cards I actually like down. However, it means that shops are struggling to move sealed product which directly impacts the overall health of the game more broadly.

Is dreadclaw just regular drop pod(old) with resin bits glued on? Or is it larger?

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.

8th wasn't the best but it was the last edition worth playing. The accompanying edition of Kill Team that used a lot of its core rules and datasheets was nice for the sake of homebrew and modularity as well.

Sensing the unease from Andris, Uliace stands from her chair and walks to the window. She's comfortable with her new situation but hasn't had a chance to really talk about it with other common elves, and especially with any of her friends. As she sits beside the window sill a pleasant sound can barely be heard through the trees.
>Ah, come and listen Dahlia! The men have begun killing each other. I do hope the northerners lose.
Hearing Uliace say she hopes her captors win visibly upsets Andris. Embarrassed, Uliace quickly shakes her arms in apology before continuing.
>Oh no! I only meant if they win, Autumn will let us tear them to pieces. You could come with us! If you see one who held you we could even let you have first pickings.
Only 2 months prior Uliace had been a prim and friendly botanist at the academy. Evidently the changes since then had not been merely physical.

Lancel turns towards the men. He lifts his sword and a pale aura surrounds him as he confidently walks forward.
>No quarter would have been given, no quarter has been expected. The lady will accept your deaths as a proper tribute!

-Lancel can easily kill a dozen mooks by himself, but he's not invincible. Howler can probably deal with him on equal footing. The Andris scene is obviously happening quite early in the battle so if she wanted to intervene in any way she'd have time to try, whether by going to town or talking to anyone relevant.
Simple gens this time, so nothing extra stands out.

Honestly tho, Perchance kinda disappointed me with many results, as I originally planned the standard bearer to be impaled on a spear, going through his torso, yet it reacted to the prompt almost like Bing, so I had to add some stuff via Google model. So I don't think I'll get anything complex now.
And for the story, I expect Lancel to learn some humility, so I guess some serious beating might serve him well. And I think that begging an elf woman for help would do it too.
