So D&D players in the old days were coming into it from fantasy novels, right?

It's just mad to think: the majority of new players today probably haven't even read The Lord of the Rings. They've watched movies and played video games.
>>
>>97247920
It makes even less sense when you understand that quests used to be a part of this board.
Imagine banning people from actually playing games that were played just like D&D.

But hey, this is /tg/ - Everything But Games.

Out on Patrol Edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPED A GAME
IT IS PLAYABLE. IT HAS BEEN PLAYED.
EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, explore & fight each other for victory and profit.

3 versions of the rules exist, 2 of which have been playtested. The main one is 2e, to be found :
as with maps, tokens and lore resources.

Have a holiday Revenant. This one is a test unit to see how assembly and painting works for something like this. I drilled a hole in the mouth to make a rictus howl and melted the face down with acetone, once it sets it should hopefully look mask-like. After that I'll need to firm up the crest and maybe add something on the back if I feel like it.
>>
For some reason, this piece fits so well in the setting, but I have no idea what it could be exactly...
>>
I've added the updated version of the neomughal.
Changes are

>Words of Wisdom trait
Clarified that the roll needed is leadership.

>Maharata
Reduced LD to 4 and its special action needing 2LD

>Ascetic
Reduced its cost to 10. It barely does anything.

>Lemurian Sharpshooter
Modified "Seventhfold Sharpshooter": Secretly note down an Enemy or Hostile model, a hex and publicly note an upcoming turn. If at any point in the noted turn the noted model enters the noted Hex, interrupt its activation, and the “Lemurian Sharpshooter” resolves as many ranged shots as it has available (if it has 4
shots, do 4 attacks; if it has 2 shots, do 2 attacks; if it has to reload, nothing happens). The “lemurian sharpshooter” still needs to be within its range to do so.

I see that we're having one of those slow starting threads.

I've been finalising the banners that I will be printing out. It's only two (one for the greatswords and one for the halberdiers), but I want them to really give off that Empire and Hochland vibe. I have the remainder of this year off, so hopefully I can push through more of my halbs.

Recently I was thinking about alternative combat systems.

I remember someone talking about instead of HP the payer has a Jenga tower and he needs to remove peaces once hit, the skill is to remove peaces without the tower collapsing

So I started thinking.
For example what if the combat somehow involves cups and balls?

Instead of a D20+modifier nonsense why not change it up? Why not give a player 10 balls or legos or whatever and to win an encounter the player needs to land 2 balls in 1 cup?

There can be variants of this like a super hard encounter demands the player lands all 10 balls or what about reducing the size of the cup with the difficulty of combat?

What if we implement a fate system from Talisman for the players? What if legendary bosses have something like that for themselves? And can negate the players victory?

What if different monsters use different "balls" like for example some bone golems will be you throwing legos into cups and zombies are aluminum balls while naga can be gummy bears? That actually makes the monster feel different and not a copy pasted set of numbers. Also the different aerodynamics of these "balls" are part of the fun.

The idea is cool, in the same way motion controls are.
They COULD actually improve a real life skill, but that means at least minor physical exertion. Given the mindset of most people in Tabaletop games, it's going to fail.

If I wanted to improve myself I wouldn't be playing a tabletop game. They are leisure. And trying to sneak in actual effort, be it ever so trivial, will result in disappointment.

I know everyone here is gigachad, but be honest for a second and look at the average tabletop gamer. If they had even the slightest will to change they would've long ago.

I did have the idea and I wanted to see anything relate to the subject before trying this with my game group.

Critical failure is only a thing in attack rolls in n 3.5. Not an only that but for skills rolls that do not happen under duress you could always take 10 or even 20 depending on the situation.
tl;dr You are just parroting shit you saw on reddit like a LLM. You aren't just retard, you luck the basis of intelligence altogether.
>>
>>97248216
>Critical failure is only a thing in attack rolls
Which is also a big issue since I've never met a target shooter who will miss a point blank shot 5% of the time.
But the issue is that it's hard to even get a +9 in 3.5e on things you're good at unless you fully minmax for it.

It's only really convincing point is that Comstar had the ability to listen in on every interstellar communication made, and probably most of the planetary communications that they'd want to listen in on. When you're a scientist developing weapons technology, you'd really want to communicate with your higher ups what you're making progress on and how well your tech works. At any point, Comstar could not only learn what's being made, but it seems like they also had the ability to mess with the development of the technology itself like they did in later eras. It might not even be the Inner Sphere not being able to somehow manufacture an AMS system, it might be Comstar messing with detection software so that when it's tested in front of the military big wigs, it underperforms horribly. Said military big wigs would then say that it's not worth the investment and then cut funding on further development. It's not that Comstar would assassinate smart people, which is still a very real possibility, but Comstar had the ability to modify anything they could get their hands on and their reach was absurdly long and coordinated.
>>
Any way you slice it the missile tech breaks down if you think about it much. Thunderbolts and Arrow IV as depicted are 70s tech at the latest. The cluster table is evidence of heavy ECM, except it's still in effect when shooting at the cheapest flatbed trucks and civilian ground cars.

If you are doing well in a campaign, it's your responsibility to bling on your opponent. No one in your campaign will respect you for buying a suspensor multimelta on a 2+ BS fighter. Everyone will respect you when you show up with your leader and their gold-plated gun, archeotech device, and a digi-multilaser.

I like to imagine Haoran slowly and horrifyingly realizing that Ri is just built different and not actively burning qi to maintain her phyisque.

The complete opposite side of the spectrum to her Body 1 (not that its deficient) to the point she's not even thinking that its just her natural state.

I mean we all have Hidden techniques that should be equally terrifying to think of, I just find this particular relationship chart entry amusing to imagine coming to fruition. - The ultimate result of Clan Scions being taught that body refinement is worthless leading to a gross underestimation.

>>

Oh cool, glad that’s settled.

I mean, the scene itself doesn’t have to change. I just personally think that Kaoru wouldn’t have accepted the gift (Momo and Alyona say no, but the hyper-paranoid Kaoru says yes?). What I think would work is if she somehow skirts around the gift, by pointing out that it could already be recording them, or claiming the clothes aren’t her size. Then, she could just pretend to be brainwashed after figuring out what’s happening, and the detective scene could instead work in the context of Kaoru looking for “survivors” precisely to help them somehow, while everyone else thinks she’s actually Santa’s jolliest soldier. Like, maybe she finds Momo and co to give them a heads-up.

Again, not like I wanted to make a mountain out of a mole hill here, but if there’s any future references to this story in my own work, I think this explanation would make more sense for something Kaoru would actually do, and pretty much nothing you wrote has to change

After about 8 years since I last DM'ed a game, I've been asked to run a session.
Unfortunately my books - adnd, 2e, 3e, 3.5, 4e, and 5e are in storage two states away.
And i prefer physical copies. Thanks to critical role and the movie DND books have gone up in price which is weird.
>4e books are ~10-15$ now.

Is it viable to run 4e in 2025? I don't remember hating it and I still remember some home rules to streamline combat to speed it up a touch.

4th ed does seem to generate that kind of scenario more than other editions, which is one of the reasons I like it. I distinctly remember thinking the party were going down in one of my missions when the warlord, the only one on his feet, pulled out a daily that let everyone spend a surge. I'm sure mass heal or something could've done that in an earlier edition but the monster damage was such everyone went down in quick succession.

My current 3rd ed group by contrast has a leader and 3 strikers which will be... interesting in terms of survival.
>>
>>97248073
>My current 3rd ed group by contrast has a leader and 3 strikers which will be... interesting in terms of survival.
Depending, it can be very good. I have a lot of 3.x experience.
The problem is early levels, which require more handholding from the DM. I try to not be afraid of handing out potions and gear if it looks like their are struggling.
In my current game, we took on an entire nest (25+) lycanthropes from levels 3 to 6, and it took all our cleverness, as well as some crucial DM handouts, for us to even survive. I accepted becoming a werewolf to give us the punch we needed to win; it's worked out fairly well.
If you are ever in the 3.5 general and see a storytime about the werewolf elf, that's me.
