Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:>n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128>Need a starter dungeon? >>97222508As a side to the aforementioned disneywood problems, the original Wormskin Zines are well worth looking at and using various parts to add to your campaign. They have a lot of useable material that has a more earnest approach and tone than the newer stuff and more direct use with b/x.

>>97222115Nah, 3E as a whole, for all its flaws, is definitely Exalted and obviously written by people who care a whole lot about Exalted. The worst parts about 3E, setting aside the mechanical issues of the core, aren't ones where the writers seem like they'd want to write something else but ones where they half-ass things due to obviously being embarrassed of something from the past editions but simultaneously too fond of that something to really let go and change things. I mean things like Raksi being sort of a cannibal monster still but kind of not, or Lilith, or Lover, or, to a lesser extent, Ipithymia.

The focus on competitive tournament faggotry has made 40k one of the most bland wargames I have ever played>Do you see it getting betterNo, luckily enough older players felt the same and there's a couple classic 40k rulesets hanging around. Not to mention being able to go back and play whatever edition I want, it's just a shame I miss out on the huge player pool of mainstream 40k.

>>97221946I get you, it IS fucky and memorable, especially for a one-shot where Corruption consequences don't matter barring some very specific rolls. But it also would make me very wary of the GM invalidating character choices in the middle of a campaign like that. Spending XP to be good at X thing just to be told anti-X happens because Chaos would be a frustrating experience. So personally, I'd need that "I wouldn't do that in a campaign" said out loud by you, if I were your player.
>>97221791They have natural children for the bragging rights and prestige. Ironically the nuclear family sans picket fence is the Commorrite Dream, the sign you made it, because you could both fuck another Comorrite, wait out the lenghty Eldar pregnancy, and raise that child without anyone involved getting murdered by each other, by rivals, or by an otherwise uninvolved conspiracy you just happened to get caught in.
>>97222284oh understandable. For sure, you have to do it with people you know and who trust you not to be an asshole. We have been playing a while already, and 3/4 players I've known for years.
>>97220239>>97220243To be honest, in the DW campaign I'm in, I would have totally thought that was cool. I get people saying "bah! 10 corruption points is so punishing!" but the limit is 100 and even in a long deathwatch campaign, it will take forever for it to matter. I slightly agree with WP success punishing you for having high WP but I think it would give away the hallucination to easily for what it is.
>>97223001>but the limit is 100 and even in a long deathwatch campaign, it will take forever for it to matterThat's a good point actually, Maybe I just don't give them out often enough, but even in the longest 40k campaigns I've ever run or played not a single character ever acculumated enough insanity or corruption points for them to actually become an issue
I haven't bought a model since like 2023 maybe early 2024. When I bought Dante he was like $35. What the fuck happened? This is legit robbery.
>>97222488They are all vastly different games. Blood Bowl isn’t a wargame it’s closer to chess with variance and many sets of unique pieces.
>>97222553These are British prices, Americans tend to pay at least 20 bucks extra for all Warhammer stuff.
>>97218744GW likes to cover production and design costs of new models and storage cost of older stock by increasing the cost of 40k units. This keeps the profit margins positive even if not every unit sells.

ITT overrated cards in MTG
>>97221058Someone can also respond to Swords to Plowshares
>someone plays a threat>play Gilded Drake>nick the threat for myself>they now have a 3/3 flierObviously you're not going to use it on a token or on a card that's worse then a 3/3, but there are a fuckton of situations where Gilded Drake just wins you the damn game. If you nick someone's big Timmy creature, for one.
>>97218965>other players seeing you as a bigger threat means the card is badStealing a commander draws a fuckton of aggro, that doesn't mean that's bad. It means IT IS GOOD YOU RETARD, YOU ARE DRAWING AGGRO BECAUSE YOU ARE AHEAD
>>97222188I didn't say it was bad, just that if you'r goal is to remove the opponent's commander in a way where it doesn't just go back to the command zone there are better options, since there's a good chance that one of the 3 other players will just Plowshare it and it goes back to the command zone.Gilded Drake is the best card for stealing an opponent's creature, but stealing creatures is a fairly niche form of removal (not being instant-speed is a big drawback, and it's not even the best way of shutting opponents from using their commanders, so to get most of it you have to build a deck around steal effects or bouncing the card to steal multiple creatures), and it's not so much better than the second best option to be worth the ridiculously high price of the card (though if you allow proxies, that's admittedly not an issue).
>>97222203>it's not even the best way of shutting opponents from using their commandersIt's pretty damn close since the change of control is permanent and not tied to an aura or the 3/3. The only way they get theirs back is if they use removal on their own commander, and if they do they're down a card AND have to pay the tax.>it's not so much better than the second best option to be worth the ridiculously high price of the cardOh I see, this thread is just whining about the cost. Look, it's a reserve list rare that's top tier in a format, it's going to be expensive. You want to whine, whine to WotC about their reprint policy. The card is great and pretending it's not won't make it any worse.
I haven't kept up with 40k lore in a long while but I just found out that they brought this guy back for no real reason and I find it really cringe. What I liked about the old lore was that humanity was in decline, the Imperium that once was is a long distant memory, the heroics of the past is shoruded in uncertainty and ambiguity and all that remains is the rot and decay. Now we have a dude from the past that has just come back and he is totally badass and cool and is gonna fix everything and also any ambiguity that makes the past mysterious and interesting is now gone because there are people alive who can backup what happened. It feels less grimdark and more marvel super hero shit. I don't really like it.
>>97222233Irrelevant, far more people care about the lore and only the lore and couldnt give less of a fuck about the models. You have lost and secondaries have won. Face it.

I just saw this highly janky asset reuse in Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerûn:https://5e.tools/book.html#fraif,1,broken%20mirrors,0>Passion Pools. These caves in the forested foothills of the Sword Mountains protect geothermic pools laced with salts that color the waters various hues of red. The air is steamy and smells foul. Use the Volcanic Caves map in Dungeon Master's Guide appendix B, treating lava as water and placing areas where priests and visitors live and work.Yes, use the volcano map, but pretend that the... lava (magma?) is actually red-colored water.Image far too big to post here: https://5e.tools/book.html#xdmg,9,volcanic%20caves,0
>>97222633Wizards are in general going to have spent years deep in their books and not have the foundational "from childhood" work put in that a fighter or other Martial has towards general fitness unless they've intentionally put in that effort. But training up Constitution makes sense for keeping up Concentration.Clerics and Druids it's a mix since they have armor training and can be tough melee fighters.Sorcerers can come from basically any path of life when their powers awaken, so there being lots of variance makes sense.

Have you tried Space Gits? It's an unusual skirmish game by Mike Hutchinson (made Gaslands). It seems to be the ultimate casual skirmish that you play while chugging beer.A lot of mechanics are dexterity based, for example instead of losing health or wounds, your fighters add D6's to their dice tower, which has to be moved alongside them (and when it drops over, they drop down). Shooting is also quirky - you roll dice equal to the number of shots and then trace lines between a shooter and each die to see if you hit the target. Landed shots use die's result, so a single roll is made to-hit and to-wound, which I think is neat.I'm going to try it this thursday. My only two complaints so far is that close combat seems bland (its basically rock-paper-scissors) and it's really easy to deny it by spamming shove. My other complaint is that the rulebook's art is atrocious vomit.Everything else checks out though, it even seem to have a basic campaign system.
>>97222322>Are there any other skirmish games where the location of the rolled dice mattered, not just the result? Asking unironically. There was a old GW boardgame which had dice rolled on a grid inside the box lid, I forgot which one it was.
>>97222076>My other complaint is that the rulebook's art is atrocious vomit. They should have this fix by Space Gits: Rezogged.

What's the weirdest, wild PC you've ever played or allowed? I let a player play a wyrmling deep dragon (DotU) in one campaign. Just Acid Spyro.
I let my players come up with whatever they want. I have a pretty robust system for character statting that forces some balance, so they've played as: - Robot that can break into three smaller units that operate as a boy band (bard)- man with the head of a slug who can retract any of his limbs inside himself - really really long and thin snake- Sentient swarm of bats (was once a vampire but can't change back) - tiny psychic mimic disguised as a tongue that moves from victim to victim - a sphere that rolls around and can only survive by eating coins and ghosts, for our maze arc of course.
>>97187628One of my players wanted to play a Bulgarian once, it was a little weird but I gave the Ok. He didn't actually speak English, so he had to talk to the one guy who spoke either german or russian who would translate for the rest of the party.
>>97188023>We like weird shit>Just means anthro subculture stuffYou have huge conventions, are one of the biggest subcultures outside of weeaboos and have no interest in being anything outside the confines of being an anthropomorphic animal.
>>97187628What are some of the more obscure monsters or cryptids that you think could work as PCs? I mean, WoW shows that Minotuar/Tauren work as a playable race, what else from myth or folklore could work, like maybe picrel?
>>97187628Warforged in Eberron.
obviously, clan skryre is the most advanced society in the setting. do you think they had access to warm, running water? you could use warpstone to heat the bath houses for example, and they had plenty of access to metal for plumbing.
>>97223075They almost certainly could, but because of no few worshipping The Great Horned Rat as a harbinger of disease and Skavendom being nearly universally overcrowded filth it probably doesn't happen. And female Skaven are either barely distinguishable from males or horribly bloated birthing-beasts.

>>97222404Probably. I wouldn't expect see that Ash semi sticking, maybe a year or so before it goes back up to 3.The charmies I still don't know where I am on them because they're more balanced but I still don't think they're good for the game. I don't that this avenue is a good method of fixing the going 2nd problem. It feels like a bandaid solution to avoid making a revision to the rules.
>>97222447>I wouldn't expect see that Ash semi sticking,Nah, I see it going back a year to a half a year. Some reason that hit irritates me, I do kind of like the card. I think the main reason why it's hit is because a lot legacy decks are starting to have supports that lets them draw 2-4 cards now and they want people to use those decks more. To me charmies still have the Maxx C issue where allowing your opponent to draw is still do good. I, also think that the game is gonna start either move towards decks being able to draw a fuck ton or simple decks that can out out a fuckton of interactions with no effort or massive combos
>>97220343That's an unreadable mess
>>97222447I'm of the belief that Mulcharmies have balanced the winrate of going second but did so in a way that lowers the overall skill expression in the game.Ash and Impulse semi are retarded though.
