I have found most systems for armor and defense unsatisfying.
I find pure damage negation doesn't represent that armor doesn't just reflect but also reduces a lot of damage too, a hammer to the helmet won't just plink off its going to have some significant concussive effect, if less than against an unhelmeted head. But on the other end, armor as pure static damage reduction often doesn't illustrate the other end, that many attacks SHOULD simply be negated, a knife thrown at a breastplate won't just deal less damage, it will ping off harmlessly.

And Barbarians of Lemuria, Specifically the Mythic version, I believe addresses both those concerns for me.

This is done by a. health and damage being kept rather conservative and relatively equal, not becoming exponential as levels go up and b. armor being a die you roll for damage reduction rather than a static number. The range of damage that armor protects just so happens to align with the damage most weapons can do. damage being 1-6 + strength and armor protecting 0-5 damage. meaning that a low roll on most attacks and a high roll on most armor saves will have the armor totally negate attacks, while a high attack roll and a low armor roll will totally bypass armor, and a medium attack roll and a medium armor roll will deal reduced damage.

This is all modified by the fact that 2 handed weapons you roll 2d6 and pick the highest damage, medium weapons you roll straight 1d6 and light weapons you roll 2d6 pick the lowest. And armor ranged from light reducing d6-3 damage (0-3 damage), medium reducing d6-2 damage (0-4 damage), and heavy reducing d6-1 damage (0-5 damage). This means a dagger has the potential to deal as much damage as a great axe if situation permits (like dagger to the eye slit), but is less likely too, and that light armor could fully protect you from a glancing blow like heavy armor, but is also less likely too.

As with all my favorite TTRPG mechanics, my favorite armor mechanic is one I had to bash together myself.
>armor weight is decided when making a character, each piece among the four features (head, pair of arms, body, pair of legs) don't have to be the same
>armor weight determines "durability modifier", base 0.10/0.25/0.63 for unarmored/light/heavy; further character options may increase this modifier
>the feature's final strength + vitality is modified (gasp) by the durability modifier to determine the durability points of the feature
>durability acts somewhat like "temporary hit points", but the type of armor and certain passive skills can reduce or even ignore damage in some cases
>unarmored won't protect the feature from a critical hit (but durability won't be reduced, so you can heal the injury and still have armor)
>light armor protects from critical hits, but is instantly broken
>heavy armor protects from all damage, and only multiplies critical hit damage
>unfortunately, heavier armor reduces that feature's reflex rating, which is important for resolving reactions, and reduces any "repeat chance" of skills used by that feature

I feel this is a way to differentiate not just armor weight, but also armor types, and incentivizes building characters in different ways.
I enjoy games which offer diverse character options and play styles, not ones that have one or two correct choices or those you have to beg a DM to be effective.

>durability acts somewhat like "temporary hit points"
I liked that idea. That there is a collection of points that refrersh between engagements, and might be ignored by certain armor piercing/circumventing things high a high draw weight arbelest or a dagger to the armpit.
>>
Static damage reduction is about right for how armor functions. Add in specific armor penetrating effects and you're good.
>>
>>97817766
you know that most armors dont cover every possible spot on the body and that no armors recieves tensions/ aka damage the same and from all angles in every location so obviously the amount of damage potentially absorbed from the armor ranges.

a part of the armmo's dr should be fixed damage reduction and the rest based on a roll

>Bonereaper
That's a nicely painted one, but ngl the bonereaper aesthetic has to be one of the worst things GW has come up with. It feels like lazy cad drafting to make skeleton models less spindly & easier to cast, but on top of that it flies in the face of what made skellymans cool which was reusing the bones of what were clearly once monsters & humans- when they're morphed & warped into specific shapes that clearly were never a part of an actual skeletal structure they might as well be made of metal at that point.

Well its April 1st again. I return first of all to remember one of /tg/'s finest works: Dungeons the Dragoning 40,000 7th edition. Last year I gave the game a revision, stapling both books together so it could rival a phonebook.

This year I have more DtD news: 8th edition is on the way. If you want to try out 7th edition before then though the book is in the same spot as always: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/2/folders/1HTYsfwiIWlGg4UZb5Bi32PYgTxKHUIp8

There's also links to a place where you can wait for updates on a playtest. Otherwise, I'll just drop it all in the folder when its done. Happy April Fools.

I mean there are games that do lends themselves to theatrics because they somewhat enforce them through rules (for example in Hero you can "attack" with presence), i would assume you can use some optional rule (like some advanced fright check from some horror splat) even in d&d but as is there's nothing enforcing the pc to simply sitting there listening to the bbeg monologuing.

Do you prefer a ton of detail fleshing out an adventure module, or do you prefer only the most note worthy and explicit features required to run the adventure? there's two competing schools of thought on how one creates more work for the DM than the other. However they might be overlooking the effort that goes into summing and paraphrasing down a lot of fluff into actionable material to execute at the table, and how flexible the canvas is to do whatever it is you wish with the more straightforward template.

A lot of people are obsessed with bulletpointslop. I don't need a module to tell me a bedroom has a bed, a chest of drawers, and 10GP in a sock. I want inspiration for something unique, and a bare bones list of generic features and a map of squares and rectangles is a waste of time/money. I can do that myself.

Gearhead thread but for /tg/

Part of why I like to play ttrpg's is the analog aspect. I prefer to keep all digital things out of the experience. No laptops, ipads, phones at the table. Well, an exception can be made for googling something quick, but other than that, keep that shit in your pocket.

I like to do my gm prep, world building, drawing maps, in notebooks. npc and character sheets etc.on paper.

I really like MUJI stationery. Their notebooks are really nice, and their pens and pencils are amazing.

I recently found some hex paper notebooks on amazon. That was really nice to use to draw some hex maps.

Do you have any neat stationery or other analog "gear" that you really like? Could you share some of your cool items or showcase your note taking system or maps or whatever?

100% agree that everything digital is a huge distraction when playing.
Prep should be rules handouts, quick reference sheets, most common and important game processes, character sheets obviously, maybe a picture or two to establish the setting, maybe some maps if I'm feeling fancy.
Notes just need to be a few supporting words for each thing so I don't forget the most important details. Then a notebook and pen+eraser to take note during play.

I think it's really important to lower expectations on "production value" of games. Seems like people think GM:ing is setting up a one-man movie production for the players and thus will never even try doing it.

I steal a lot of ideas and plot points from TV shows and books. My players are normalfags that don't consume anything that isn't current and popular, so they don't know how much I steal. The few times they actually caught on, they were fine with it.
I'm just worried I am creating a bad habit. I have tons of original ideas as well, but I'm very demotivated, since a lot of adventures fell through for one reason or another and I had to come up with brand new concepts every time, so I have been stealing a lot more recently.

My party is about to take on the Redbrands in LMoP. They found the secret entrance to Tresendar Manor but might go in the front door anyway, and either way seems like it'd be fun. The nothic is looking to backstab Glasstaff and take his staff (which is cursed), so they might get to bypass a lot of the dungeon depending on how they play it. My fighter is itching to bash some skulls after a RP heavy session last time and there'll be plenty of time for that if the party chooses, though they might also end up playing cee lo with the Redbrands too.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

TQ: what's your least favorite disadvantage for a player to take?

Either I’m stupid, or that’s stupid. And I don’t know which it is.

We almost beat the 'Supposed to lose' boss in the tournament in our third session. The Leshy-piloted golems.
>Context
>Party of 4 (Champion/Guardian/Commander/Witch)
>During downtime we have the Witch craft some Alchemist fires (Because we noted how outnumbered we've been and want some AoE)
>Get the Tournament sprung on us
>3 rounds, 2 participants only
>No healing between rounds
>No outside help
>No targeting the Leshy
>First round is Guardian/Witch
>Guardian gets his shield broken by a crit and they almost lose Round 1
>Champion/Commander handle round 2, it's a shield construct and two trip-mobs
>able to get through with minimal damage (After a battle medicine) and most resources intact
>Final battle is a 'Meant To Lose'
