Exalted champ is def gone but you can just use him as a chosen or whatever. Chaos is pretty up to date overall, only real mainline kit that's abysmally old is bikes, and GW... PROBABLY won't squat bikes for one edition before new models come out. Wouldn't be the most retarded thing they've ever done.
>>
>>92605092
These are the wages of playing current edition, you should know by now.
>>
GW sells on their store:
>1050 WH40k products
>743 AoS products
>582 Horus Heresy products
>313 Middle-Earth products
And that's before getting into all their paints and such and all of their limited time model releases for side games
That's just modeling products and a few codexes and box sets.
It's not surprising that they're trying to cut down on those numbers by just a little bit.
Especially when everyone is expecting them to release around a dozen new products every month

Read all the rules on WahaPedia, though the Core rules are free to download on Warhammer Community if you prefer.
Read the core rules, then read your army codex (Space Marines).
You'll need dice (about 20 D6s), models, clippers and/or a hobby knife, plastic glue, some paints and painting supplies like brushes
Then you either need to go to a LGS with your friend to borrow a table and some terrain or at home find a big table you can mark out some zones on and some scrap wood or cardboard to make some basic terrain out of to start.
A note pad to record points is probably a good idea too.

It started with their game colour paints and they seem to have changed the model color paints to use the same acrylic pigments as the old formula model color paints but with the same formula that game color uses that somehow produces bubbles.
It is just a terrible hassle and you'll spend more time fighting the paint than actually painting with it. It sucks to see one of the best hobby paint companies make such a stupid decision.

>What do I need to know?
Basic rules, which can be found for free. Watch some battle reports to get a sense of how they work in practice.
>Do I have to buy books and dice kits?
Not necessarily to books if you're smart. Yes to dice, but only a pile of d6s.

Yes but barely. Only a few special character models you can optionally run. Salamanders are just regular space marines painted green.

99% of Space Marine units are generic and can be fielded by any chapter. If you want to get a full 1k point army for a decent price without buying another person's old space marines, I'd search "Leviathan Space Marine Half" on ebay and start from there. If your friends are doing <1k point games or an escalation league that's good enough for now. But to hit 1k, you'll need a bit more. You could get some Salamander characters, some more flamers for fluff purposes, or pick up a combat patrol, like the Dark Angels box (with the dreadnought in it), the Blood Angels one with the rhino, or the generic Space Marine one. Just those 3 though, the other chapters' combat patrols all have chapter-specific shit in them. I think Salamanders are in the generic Space Marine codex so pick that up too.

Sounds like a lot to buy up front but space marines are actually one of the simpler armies to pick up, thanks to having 3+ combat patrol boxes to choose from, depending on the chapter, as well as Leviathan. or you could just buy a used lot of ebay and strip the paint

As I was saying Vallejo does have a bubbling problem nowadays. It is sad to see a hobby titan brand stoop so low, but it is what it is. Look to any alternative paint line (if you're trying to avoid Citadel paints). Even craft store paints are better if they don't have a bubbling problem.

Any gunmetal paint can easily replace leadbelcher and any bright silver paint can replace Stormcast silver.
ArmyPainter and Duncan's Two Thin Coats line of paints I believe have colour match charts for matching Citadel paints.
AP reformulated its paints and I'm not sure if for better or worse. And Duncan's Two Thin Coats paints are a bit expensive.
>>
>>92605570
>Insane thing to say
Yeah it is.
Its also insane how Vallejo somehow allowed its paints to make it to mass production for the public with its bubbling problem, but here we are. The great alternative to Citadel paints has fallen and I envy those who already have their pre-reformulation stocks of Vallejo paints already.

Craft store paint can work. The Grogs that paint historical miniatures scoff at us Warhammer-babies for using hobby brand paints at my LGS. So whatever craft store brand they're using clearly works.

If you're dead set on getting Vallejo paints now then I hope you don't encounter the bubbling problem. That means Vallejo fixed the problem and you got the fixed batch, but if you encounter bubbling then I remember I warned ya.

I don't have pictures but the seasoned historical miniature painters at the FLGS make it actually work. That's why they scoff at us for using hobby brand paints. Its quite inspiring really.
>so bubbling issues are also irrelevant
You've never encountered a bubbling issue, and that's a good thing. Its very disheartening to look at your paintjob and find out there is an unpopped bubble that dried ruining the thing.
>you clearly don't care

If you bought the new Vallejo paints and haven't had any bubbling problems then maybe they quietly fixed it. I hope so, but I'm not too keen.
Check your batch ID on the paints that work without problems and if your paints are from the LGS then stick to the paints said batch. The batch ID is printed on the Vallejo bottles.

the problem is that gw has been using rules to sell models for years now. they could make a simple ruleset with unambiguous interactions, but that wouldn't let them sell primaris lieutenant #47: this time he gives you +1 to hit until the end of phase when an opponent uses a stratagem targeting a unit within 12".

The warband is generally split into two camps, those of Mortarion's geneseed and those not. Of those not, most are simply renegades that have over time fell to Nurgle's various maladies. Though a certain group, specifically of Daemonkin Possessed and Obliterators, are captured Imperial Fists. Twisted and tortured until either broken beyond use, or willing to serve any that make the pain lessen.

On the surface, the warband's leadership is split by endless quarreling between the warboss and the big mek over the ideal means of transport (light and fast vs. heavy and bristling with guns), with additional tension resulting from the big mek holding a monopoly over the construction and maintenance of their fleet, balanced out by the sheer might and numbers of the Warboss' faction. In actuality, the two have an unspoken understanding that this gives them better control over their underlings, as potential challengers would effectively be going against two powerful leaders instead of one, as an upset over one would undoubtedly lead the other one to try and assert full leadership of the warband.

As already mentioned, they don't have much in the way of beasts of burdens, but somehow a particularly garrulous squigosaur spawned and started chasing down the orks in their trukks and buggies. It didn't win every encounter, either, but these days an Ork with the squig-handling knack faced it down and brought it to heel, before getting a dok to rig up some handy prosthetics for the beasts' ruined jaw and hobbled leg.

Unfortunately I'll never actually make them, but my homebrew chapter maintains a rich vocal tradition.
All marines are allowed to practice whatever art and crafts they'd like in their free time, but most brothers willingly join or are peer-pressured into joining their companies' choirs.
The chapter is able to afford higher quality gear, heirlooms, etc, by bidding off choir albums to Imperial high society.
Only the choirs of the battle and veteran companies are permitted to contribute recordings for these albums. The reserve companies have choirs as well. Prior to the codex restructure, the tenth company was not permitted a choir, but now vanguard marines have a choir while scouts are still not permitted to sing.
With incredibly unique bass, contrabass, and subcontrabass ranges, the chapter has established a unique niche in Imperial culture.
Being followers of the Imperial Cult, these brothers have also freely perform joint albums with Battle Sisters for the use of High ecclesiarchial worship, sometimes recording after battles with Excorcist accompiament.
Like other marines, these brothers practice war hymns and cantilever on the battlefield, but unlike others, many of their wat machines incorporate advanced audio equipment for drowning out the din of battle with beautiful music, all controlled by master-sound technician Techmarines.
Some controversy about the distribution of their music, so an Ordo Astartes inquistor and his acolytes are permanently tasked with overseeing the distribution of their music. They are also secretly tasked with monitoring the chapter for Slanneshi corruption due to many of their members' tendencies as audiophiles.
Unfortunately, this is the least likely case for the chapter, as these marine are far more likely to fall to khornate temptations due to their slowly degrading White Scars successor gene seed, which sees brothers break down from their noble image into that of a raving savage on the battlefield.

Does the lord and jump pack lord count as the csm codex model?
>>
>>92605123
Everything in there is usable if not just generally good. The Ghost Arc is typically better served by being built as the Doomsday Arc since its had strong uses in 9th and 10th and the Triarch Stalker is a bit underwhelming though useable. Otherwise you're going to benefit from those Tomb Blades for secondaries and the Spyder can be fun. Having all of the baseline troops and the based Scarabs for screening / exploding is never not useful.

I would buy that box today especially because I have a fondness for the green rods, even though Immortals have only just VERY recently become a stronger choice.

A solid set for an army. 2 Doomsday Arks, 6 tomb blades, some immortals, a spyder, and warriors + scarabs. The command barge is my personal favorite model in the army, but unfortunately it’s not super great even as an annihilation barge. The stalker is also only so so, but solid model lineup all around. And remember, rules are temporary, models are forever. So if those models fit your fancy, all the better you didn’t have to buy them now.

>>

they are entirely a separate thing, basically just another space marine army but with their own models. you can run an inquisitor and retinue as allies for fluff reasons; see Agents of the Imperium for more info on that.

Really hard to say what they started at. Or if they used a Citadel color at all.
It's possible they started the carapace with something like Russ Grey (which is darker and bluer than Fenrisian Grey) and built up from there.
The World Eaters logo on the shield suggests they used whatever paint WE used for their Heresy colors and I hate that the new GW site doesn't list the paints used on the model pages anymore.

I decided for some reason that my chapter would be nautical themed and I can't choose between a harpoon's head or the letter Θ (theta, as in thalassa which is greek for sea).
Which one? The latter one feels a bit too ultramarine-y but the former paired with their colour would mean they'd be really close to Atlantian Spears (which to be fair they're inspired by).

Exclusively is a better descriptor, and even then 6 Kans, pushing the army ability and the strat for +1 to wound and damage do 8 wounds to a T10+ 2+ vehicle or 10 wounds to a T10+ 3+ vehicle. Then Hazardous kills a Kan before your opponent points anything in their direction and they evaporate.

Does anyone actually like playing with player placed terrain?
It seems almost everyone I know prefers various tournament layouts whenever possible, If not some other kind of pre-arranged symmetrical board ayout
>>
>>92609145
-1 dam for 1 cp does a lot of work, plus cover. Hazardous will only do 3 mortals , so not an issue, and no point in pushing both. Kanz are cheap and good, main problem is giving up bid, which is a pain, but that's why you have to push with grots and storm boys to max primary and clense /deploy. Kanz also are pretty good for that, as you can buy them assault. Maybe I should go 3 man squads to cover more ground, and reduce single target shooting damage

Player placed terrain usually turns into a shitshow fast. I've never done an "official" layout but at the LGS I go to we almost always get either a neutral third party or the store owner to place terrain so there's no bias in where stuff's going. It usually works out - the store owner especially doesn't actually play 40k so he just puts terrain where he thinks it would either logically go or would look the coolest. Surprisingly this ends up working out most of the time.

This makes no sense. Exarch spirits are bound into their armor. This is suggesting that an exarch who wears a suit of Swooping Hawk armor could actually be dedicated to the Striking Scorpion aspect, and the armor in turn could be full of Dark Reaper and Crimson Hunter spirits. They're not supposed to mix like that.

It certainly provides more variety, but rotationally or translationally symmetric terrain in theory avoids providing a sided advantage. It's not very interesting, with firing lanes and flanks determined and able to be memorized and with no terrain producing rules (no craters from explosions, no wrecks from destroyed vehicles) it becomes very important to swap layouts regularly in casual games, or to admit that boring and samey is the point for competitive.

Battletech and a few other games work with player-chosen terrain of various kinds, with Alpha Strike doing a kind of deployment scheme where you can choose to place terrain across the board following specific rules (You place some terrain on your deployment side, some in the middle and some on your opponent's side, taking turns.) and the original rules being basically map drafts where you choose half of the layout and the opponent chooses the other half to be stitched together. Something similar might work in 40k, but it would rely on having a lot of modular terrain and robust placement rules to prevent some armies from performing degenerate strategies (placing terrain to lock enemy vehicles off a significant portion of the map, bunkering up probable objective locations to turtle out points, etc).

Generally I think semi-modular layouts would be nice to bridge the gap between fully symmetrical and narrative layouts; rules to force "symmetrical" terrain that isn't symmetrical like "You've added three small ruins in a spaced Z across no-man's land; your opponent can elect to place a different ruin layout on the opposite side, or place a long pipe or barricade, or a small hill or tower opposite, so long as it's not centered." yadda yadda, so on and so forth. Second best would be just some asymmetrical but mathed out layouts that aren't the same on both sides, but provide roughly the same benefits and tactical opportunities.

Honestly it seems this list is tailored towards objectives instead of just playing the game. Fine if that's what you're going for, but it loses points in style in my head.
Notably:
>Dread mob list has 1 dread in it (kanz will never count)
>15 stormboyz for actions and nothing else
>Same thing with snikrot, doesn't even have kommandos to go with him
>30 Grots for some fucking reason
>Twin killsawz on manz in the detachment that buffs shooting (since they're with a mek)
Overall, it seems like an incredibly boring list to play or fight against. You're just doing actions, in the detachment that should be more fun than them all. Whoopie.

thought id necro this discussion in regards to paints as i feel its quite important for newer players and people like me coming back to the hobby. when i started the only model paints i had access to were citadel and those enamel paints (with the annoying metal lids).

so for someone like myself coming back and finding out there are so many brands competing for market share and being able to find most of them in my LGS (im from a "city" in australia) i found it quite overwhelming. i know that it all comes down to preference, but instead of discussing what paints we all like, id like to know what paints to AVOID. which brands or specific paints have you disliked, /40kg/? ive got a fair few contrast paints now and ive found at least half of them to be fairly shitty, they (imo) tend to be hit and miss

>>92609923
Most of us don't play eldar or necron. Wait time for updates, for the avarge player, often out strip the time someone stays with the game. And the game ain't cheap, so generats that odd feels bad loop, where people don't have fun, think about how much they spend and have even less fun. For longer term players the added factor is stuff like rules removal, faction or game removal, and by virtue of playing longer this also is linked to having spend even more money on not having fun. There is also a small group of people that care about lore. And by that I mean any lore from any edition, from before or after any change.

And then there is also a small group of memers and dudes who just are angry all the time.

Skitarii Rangers -10pts (90 -> 80)

With custodes having females now does it mean that they fuck each other in the imperial palce or on their off time?
>>
>>92610297
If there's anything good in the custodes codex it's some of the enhancements. I personally like both defensive ones in the hybrid detachment. An axe captain with 10str 4 dmg is too funny not to alt least try out.

Kinda feel like AdMech is in a point where no one in the balance team cares about them so no one is willing to do a bit of serious design work to fix them and so they continue limping along. They might as well mercy kill the faction at this point.

>>92610318
I understand your fixation with the male/female sexual organs young anon. I was young once too. But I do not know, besides maybe giving a helmet wearing model a pink base border, how one could mark a custodes model as female.
>>
>>92610346
I don't think any of the C'tan actually win a 1v1 vs the Avatar, and certainly not easily. The Nightbringer gives him a run for his money, but the others get whacked faster than they can whack him. They're still too cheap in comparison, but in a duel the Avatar should come out ahead more often than not. Especially against the weaker ones.

I play for fun, but winning is a bonus. What's so hard to understand about that? It's the people who are so driven to win that they compromise their armies aesthetic choices that are a curse. Or worse, hop between armies depending on the meta.

This happened in 8th and 9th too. GW has said they are intent on more frequent changes but theres no changing a truly badly written codex. GW just has to wake up and stop making physical codexes. What on earth is wrong with making updated indexes that you can grow and include new detachments and amend? Just sell the codexes as art books

Winning is the way and the goal in itself. Has been like that since the dawn of time. You either win and then you are, or you lose and you don't even exist.
>>
>>92610378
The avatar gets absolutely raped by the Nightbringer. He averages 3 wounds per activation, so 6 per battle round of which 2 get healed back up, while the NB averages 6 wounds.
The NB is also a lot more spiky since he can get hit by dev wounds or simply fail his invuln saves, while the NB has the same invuln save + a FNP to smooth out damage even more.

>>
>>92609988
Yea what the fuck they could have gotten like 50 point increases and still be ran
>>
>>92610425
You forget the the Avatar halves damage as well, so the NB does not average 6 wounds on him, more like 3. The Avatar also has access to Fate dice (which can have enormous effects on him, his ranged attack has sustained hits d3, a c'tan going into an avatar can perfectly well be eating 2+2d3 S16 D6+2 damage hits on the way in thanks to a guaranteed overwatch hit) and both -1 to hit and -1 to wound buffs. Both units are extremely spiky as well, with several d6 damage rolls and crit effects, as well as low number of attacks going into 4+ invulns. Yes, the nightbringer is undercosted, and can beat the avatar, but he hardly does it easily. The other C'tans does not want to tangle with the avatar if they can avoid it.
>>
>>92610479
>You forget the the Avatar halves damage as well
The avatars like 80 points more for no FNP
Nightbringer shits on him

The worst part is it would be so easy to make a kit. It doesn't even matter if people buy imperial tanks to convert, it's still. Money in the pot
>>
>>92610479
It's 6 wounds after the halve damage, it would be around 11 wounds without halve damage, with a 35% chance of killing it in one turn outright.
>-1 to hit and wound
All of those effects come from other units, if you did that then you'd have to take into account other Necron units supporting the NB as well.
The NB has a shooting attack as well.

>>
>>92610532
Yes, when I think AdMech my fantasy of the army is a sea of cyborgs and chicken walkers with inaccurate peashooters who just run, ride, and fly up and stand in a big circle around the enemy "stealthily" and occasionally shout that they are lone operatives and are not allowed to be shot at while they are butchered by the dozens and then a tech priests off screen ticks off some points and vox screeches just as planned.
>>
>>92610580

>>Every C'tan halves damage
So does the Avatar.
>Every C'tan has the same Save profile and 4++
No C'tan has a 2+ save, they all rely on their 4++, making them more vulnerable to low-AP lethal hits.
>Every C'tan ALSO gets a 5+++
True.
>Every C'tan ALSO gets to heal for d3 every round
True.
>Every C'tan ALSO hits at least as hard as the Avatar
Lmao fucking no. The nightbringer is comparable, but the rest don't even come close. They have fewer attacks, worse strength, worse AP and worse damage.
>>92610526
>6 attacks
>5 hits
>3 wounds (assuming no fortune AND rounding up)
>1.5 go through (assuming no fate dice are used, which they would be, so might as well count it as 1 but I won't do illustrate the point)
>8ish damage
>halved
And -1 to hit is a strat, not another unit. There are effectively zero necron support for C'tan, they're exempt from pretty much everything the necrons do. It's one of the reasons they're so good, they don't need any support at all. Again, I'm not saying the Avatar always beats the nightbringer, he won't. But saying the NB, or even more idiotic, ANY C'tan, beats the avatar *easily*? Just plain wrong.
>>
>>92610580
Well they do, anon. The MFM points override the Codex ones
>>
>>92610549
Yes, but they are generaly not interested in fixing them. Everyone knows that the Ad Mecha problem is a rules, and not just a points problem. But they can't just go "ups our bad" and release a new ad mecha codex 6 months after the first.

ALL marine problems, of the good and the bad factions are of the "marines are bad in general" problems. They had a crutch in form of BT and Ironstorm. Their win rates of any kind if you remove iron storm become abyssal, especialy for something like DA. Non Iron Storm DA with actual DA detachments and DA units (other then Azrael) in them are sub 40% win rate.
>>
>>92610591
My ad mech fantasy is skitarii providing optimization buffs to the rest of the skitarii because the techpriests are too busy leading kataphrons around. Also my favourite detachment is the one that was supposed to be centered around cybernetica but there aren't enough of those so it's also the vehicle detachment.
