Do (you) enjoy sexualized art on your cards? Or something more modest for when playing in public or introducing the game to someone?

Spike Brothers in Vanguard have a pseudo-self sacrificing thing going on that involves them shuffling a unit from your field back into the deck or stacking it under your Vanguard to call another unit(s) and abuse "When played" effects.
>>93141508
It's not something I actively look for in a game, yet at the same time it doesn't bother me. If I want to jack off, I'll go jack off. I suppose there's a tactical advantage conveyed by getting an opponent so flustered it impacts their decision-making.

Now, we can further abuse these effects that replace our units with Rising Nova here. When placed as a Vanguard, Nova lets you choose a circle and put down two different Force markers on that circle: one which pumps a unit's power (making it harder to defend against), and a second which increases that unit's critical (it does more damage when its attack successfully hits the opponent). Guys like Mecha Instructor let you keep putting units on that circle, with the two markers, for big damage.
>>
>>93141699
Lastly, you put down this fella to make our big guys even bigger (for them) and score up to two more attacks.

Black Leader

5 Life / 5000 Power (Special)

Four Emperors / Blackbeard Pirates

Your [On Play] abilities don't activate.

[Activate Main] You may trash one card from your hand : Until the end of your opponent's next turn, your opponent's [On Play] abilities don't activate.
God damn just when you thought black couldn't get even more cancer they somehow invented a completely new form of black cancer, this game is fucked.
>>
>>93141921
Yellow main?
This will likely force a shift all across the board, including the black cancer you are complaining about. Going against BB will destroy a lot of current black decks that can no longer hope for a Moria, Sabo or Stussy to bail them out.
On play is king in the game right now and BB himself cant use most of the best black cards, discarding to deny a BM or Yamato turn will feel great but you can only do that once or twice realistically because if they cant play their bomb they will use that don to make you pay for it.
Good news for new Sanji leader though.

That's why I'm saying it's a completely new form of cancer because it's black but it doesn't play any of the current good black cards besides probably Borsalina, you're right tho this will definitely be a big shift in the meta, wether it's a good or bad thing I don't know but it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Also yellow is cancer too, I'm a red main.

ToPku's final event.
>>
Decks will be made of exactly 50 cards. No more, no less.
Up to 4 copies of a card can be in a deck. This goes by identifying card number, not name. As there will be multiple cards and versions of the same character with the same name.
There are 8 phases of a turn:
o Start phase
o Draw phase
o Lead player set scene card phase
o Set character card phase
o Level up phase
o Open phase
o Effect activation phase
o Judgment phase
During the ‘judgment phase’ if a player has won 3 (or more) battles in a single turn, they win the game.
The game can also end if a player fails to play a character during the ‘set character card phase’. The pl as yet who did not play a character immediately loses.

I actually gave FaB a chance a couple months ago with a friend, and, for some background, I played Burn in Modern for pretty much the entire time I played that format. Anyway, like I said, I tried FaB with my friend, who, bless him, will play just about anything I want, so long as I buy/print the cards for both of us (I don’t mind, because I get games in for all sorts of obscure and dead TCGs). When we finished our first (and only) game of FaB, which took about 45 minutes (we may have taken longer than is normal due to being new, no idea), he said it was okay, but I could tell he didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as, say, ScoreZ, which I’ll use as the example since it has a slight resemblance to FaB on a surface level, and we had played it like 2 weeks before our FaB game. I told him we wouldn’t play it again and left it at that, because I didn’t want him to know we just wasted almost an hour of our free time, which I don’t have much of these days.
Anyway, as I mentioned, I played Burn in Modern before I quit MtG, and you are so fucking right on this. FaB felt EXACTLY like playing Modern Burn, but like a mirror match, so it was just boring as fuck slinging attacks at each other for the better part of an hour, with no nuance whatsoever. Fuck this game.
Somebody will probably say our decks were just shit, but I netdecked them from some tournament lists online and used proxies I printed for every card worth more than a few dollars (I don’t buy into a game unless I already enjoy it). I played Dorinthea because I heard she was fairly simple, but not braindead, and the deck I loaned my friend was Fai, because the aesthetic seemed like something he’d like and Fai also came up when I was searching for easy heroes for new players.
Avoid.

>>93147921
I read most of this post and it appears you’re still crying about how I formatted the text in my own, and how I typed it as if I was speaking in a conversation. Stopped reading at that point, but just to give you an idea of how people write things, generally, writing something as if you’re speaking in person is not a bad thing, and some people prefer things to be written that way, like myself. I have never seen someone so automatically hung up on something that matters so little. You mentioned I’m having a mental breakdown, but you’re still having a fit over how I worded and formatted a critique of a game you don’t even play (which I’m not sure I believe, based on how you singled out my critique as worthy of crying about). Can you explain why my wording is so outrageously offensive to you? I promise I’ll read the whole thing this time if you explain this weird pet peeve of yours in a reasonable manner.
>>
>>93147911
>>93147912
I was just wondering if sharing ideas for games and homebrew game design was cool here, or if the thread was just for talking about officially published games.

But I guess to give you an idea of what the game is like:

It's a card game where both players compete for control over the three locations on the board.

The goal of the game is to control a location by having a higher total Power Value than your opponent. The player who controls most locations by the end of the final turn is the winner.

Players play various Unit cards to each of the three locations. Each unit has an individual Power Value. The total sum of all the Units’ Power Value you control at a location determines which player holds control over that location.

The game essentially counts down as players go through the turns wrestling's for control of the locations, with the idea being with duels becoming more intense as you approach the final turn.

You also charge mana onto your individual Units to raise their overall value score, and to unlock different tiers of abilities or attacks.

I'll give more of a detailed breakdown if people are still interested on hearing about it.
>>
>>93147975
>Can you explain why my wording is so outrageously offensive to you? I promise I’ll read the whole thing this time if you explain this weird pet peeve of yours in a reasonable manner.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, but I lied about actually reading it. Want to know something funny? The story in the original post you’re so broken up about was complete fiction, and I deliberately worded it that way. Have you noticed how the way I’ve been communicating you doesn’t read like that post whatsoever? I think it’s very funny that what I thought was just a mildly cringey way of wording that post got you so angry.
Anyway, I hope this news helps you settle down a bit. Cheers.

>>
>>93147982
Decent idea. I think the Warhammer LCG had a similar thing going on, and games like Star Trek and Nightmare Before Christmas have similarities with either point totaling or racing to point total at locations.
>>
>>
What I hate about Wixoss is that you win the game by never doing anything since vanishing SIGNI gives your opponent ener to counter play you. So unless your color is green you just pass turns if there is no clear lane to hit through its quite boring compared to most life cloth tcgs honestly.
>>
>>93147982
there's enough games that do this kind of thing that there's actually a name for it, a Lane Battler (or lane battle game). there's a lot of variations on the basic idea. a recent acg called solforge fusion did a five lane version. three lane is more typical though, and you'll often also see the locations have special properties that modify how the fight goes down. check out Smash Up, Omen: Reign of War, or Guardians (the PHG game) for some inspiration.
>>
>>93148107
I never played Battle Spirits, which is exactly why I wanted to share the idea actually. I wanted to see if it felt similar to other stuff I likely haven't played.

My main inspiration actually comes from a game designed by this guy here:

https://youtu.be/0uElTDfxo8I?si=BL1dRaJ5RDTIVFQY

The general concept and vibe of his game is very similar to the IP I'm trying to design a game for.

There was just a couple issues I had with it, so I started charging it.
No 1. While I really liked his whole idea of "put monster cards face down below the citizens" it didn't lend itself well to working with named characters, who for lore or story reasons shouldn't be able to turn into monsters.

No.2 the location mechanic is neat, but it felt really disjointed from the life system since he went for Life decking. And while the flavor of Life decking = Sanity loss was cool, it was just making the game too convoluted to design. So I opted for making it more of "control the location" type game more like Marvel Snap I guess. Which to be fair, does make the overall game much more exciting I think, as it's more of a King of the Hill type scenario.

As for the Unit cards, I personally really enjoy the feeling of charging energy to Pokemon in the PTCG. I just hate how clunky that is overall in that game, since the Energy are shuffled into your deck like Lands in MtG.

So I opted for a Duel Masters "every card is mana" system, and when you tap them, you attach "mana tokens" to a unit you control. Reach a certain threshold and you unlock various abilities. Such as the ability to attack for more aggressive characters for example. I think this is neat too, cause like in Pokemon, you can just place units down for no cost, but making them worthwhile requires you invest resources into them, and doing so means they're also clearer targets for combat and removal, adding a really neat back and forth I think.

I will. Thanks a bunch. Knowing there's a name for the subgenre, and being given a bunch of other examples of similar games helps a lot, as my biggest doubt right now is the turn counter counting down making games too rigid, or feel like they might drag. Seeing how other games approach this sort of design will give me ideas for other options to explore.

The parts I personally like the most is the 3 locations, where the locations have unique effects or abilities, with the units fighting over those locations.

And being able to pump mama into units to make them stronger and unlock their ability (kinda like, every unit is a Normal Monster from Yu-Gi-Oh, until you unlock their abilities).

>>93148375
The copyright thing is just placeholder to see where it looks best on the card.

But actually. I do live in Japan. And Kodansha is my publisher. I mentioned I'm trying to design a game for an IP. I've been messing around with multiple ideas for card games for the better part of a year now I think, trying to find the best fit for this IP. The idea is to develop this card game idea over a year or two, as I get the manga off the ground, and then show it to my editor as a proof of concept, then he can pitch it to the right game designer here in Japan. Normally what they do is they just licence it out for a collab like W/S or Duel Masters, or hire a publisher like Bandai to design a simple game, but I personally just really like card games, so I wanted to get a little more hands on with this myself.

What's the theme or genre that you want the tcg set in?
Is the three locations part particularly important, if so why?

I think it'd probably be hard to balance a tcg with a set number of turns to win. You could have a lot of room to design in new win/lose conditions without a turn limit.
With a set number of turns the only one that really matters is the last with the rest of the turns being foreplay. You could make a card with that condition as an effect but don't make that the whole game without a good reason.

>>
>>93148780
>What's the theme or genre that you want the tcg set in?
Gothic Horror that slowly escalates into Eldritch Horror

The manga it's based on is essentially "Bloodborne the Shounen manga" if I were to simplify it the most.

Protagonist is a young doctor in search for the recipe to this medicine that is said to cure any disease because he's turning onto a monster and he doesn't understand why. Pic rel.

The girl in >>93148210 is the deutoragonaist of the manga, and the lead heroine. The "Vegeta" if you will (or more accurately, the Rin for anyone that's keen on Fate).

The kinda concept itself plays heavily on the idea of people turning into monsters, and investigating creepy gothic horror incidents.

>Is the three locations part particularly important, if so why?
The story is set in a Steampunky Gothic Victorian City, and features the characters exploring and investigating various parts of the city, encountering monsters (or more specifically people turning into monsters), etc... So I kinda wanna capture that feeling of "you get to get really hands on in seeing these parts of the city" within the game as well.

It's one of the aspects from >>93148210 the pitch this guy gave in his video that really resonated with what I had in mind too.

>I think it'd probably be hard to balance a tcg with a set number of turns to win. You could have a lot of room to design in new win/lose conditions without a turn limit.
Yeah, that's exactly where my doubts fall as well. I've been looking into several of the games mentioned here. A lot of them either do MtG style life points (which I don't like at all). Or a sort of count up to a certain point value threshold (this one seems worth exploring).

>With a set number of turns the only one that really matters is the last with the rest of the turns being foreplay.
That's a true observation. Though there is something to be said about how it crecendos into an exciting climax as well. I'll have to mess with it.

Right on, I get the gist as far as theme and setting and thanks for sharing.
It would be neat to see an asymmetric game. A bit like Ani-Mayhem/X-files tcg/ the old Middle Earth ccg, where you could explore as a hero deck or do evil stuff as a villian. Maybe tie the win condition mission cards to deck type, or have certain decks favor certain approaches like just beating the other guy up.
I think you like the idea of evolving or leveling cards and you could tie that into control of regions or missions accomplished, too.

>>

>>
>>93149156
>>93149293
Hmm, emphasizing the investigation angle can probably be really good actually.

I actually really like Arkham Horror LCG, I've played a couple sessions with my brother.

Theres a possibility to take more strongly from that. Rather than have it be a 3 lane thing, maybe it could be more like a board with 9 locations that both players compete to investigate by investing points into them. And the turn counter rather than being a straight dice could probably be a more dedicated event deck or something.

I do gotta balance this with letting the game be more mainstream friendly by keeping it simple, but there's definitely no harm in at least trying something like this out and seeing where it goes. I can't deny I'm not tempted to at least try it. Emphasizing the Investigator angle is also very flavorful with the setting and themes too. At the very least, by exploring this design direction, I might come away with some ideas to help narrow in on some things, even if I don't go full 9 locations in the end.

Also, thinking on it I should rename Unit cards to "Characters" actually, and "Legendary" to probably "Hero" to line it up better with the themes on second though as well. So "Character" cards and "Hero Character" cards. It just lines up better with the more personal Horror/Investigator flavor, Units is more "military."

I'll look into asymetry as well, though once again, I'll have to focus on keeping the game mainstream friendly.
>>
>>93149352
>maybe it could be more like a board with 9 locations that both players compete to investigate by investing points into them
Just remember the bigger your playing area tries to be (whether it be due to gameplay mechanics or needing tokens and etc.) the less it is fit to be a card game and the better it is as a board game. If you're still meandering on what the main interaction point of the game is supposed to be like, then I would suggest forming a solid vision of the game you want to make first before smoothing out the nitty gritties
>>
>>93149192
He just comes off as too self-righteous in his commentary. Like he's the end all be all when it comes to TCG design, and his opinions shouldn't be questioned. He has some opinions that are agreeable, like "limit the amount of game pieces as much as possible to just the cards" or "don't use non-standard cards." But he also has others that are way too subjective and moreso the result of bad implementation, but he treats it as objectively faulty. Such as "life decking is bad" or "card games where you move cards on a board are bad." When both of those examples have been proven to have a lot of potential. Like, if Life decking for example was inherently bad, then Tearlaments and Dredge wouldn't have been such powerful (and fun) decks in their respective decks. I hold a strong opinion that if you design a game around the idea of "two Tearlaments decks facing each other" with Life decking as the core mechanic, you could come out with a rather fun game overall.
>>
>>93149399
the funniest thing is when he goes "wow this large company that has never heard of me just keeps doing the thing I said not to do, who do they think they are?!"
>>
>>93149393
>Just remember the bigger your playing area tries to be (whether it be due to gameplay mechanics or needing tokens and etc.) the less it is fit to be a card game and the better it is as a board game.
That's exactly my main concern and exactly what I mean by letting this be very mainstream friendly. If this is going to be a licenced game, the most important thing is that the game is simple enough to play so that it reverberates back into also working as marketing material for the core IP regardless, while still keeping some essence of the flavor of the IP.

The best example of this imo, is the Naruto CCG. Though Pokemon TCG also isn't a bad example either.

It's also why I lean more toward keeping the game as symmetrical and competitive, rather than asymmetrical or cooperative.

That said, I'll at least explore some other design options and see if they can fit into the established design I've settled on so it's not just "Marvel Snap but...." adding some slight investigator flavor to it can help make things more interesting.

For example, maybe the location cards can be two-faced, and when a threshold is reached, they flip over. And the countdown could perhaps be a more exciting and disruptive "countdown to doom" type of deal, rather than just a pure dice counter. One of the downsides of this though is that if you have a shared "event deck, it does add "more things to bring to a table," than just your deck, some dice and some tokens. I'll mess around with some ideas at least.
>>
>>93149420
I feel like he switched between if he's serious when he says this or not. Like sometimes it sounds like he's saying it as a joke but sometimes it's like "I mentioned this in my last review of one of your card games, Bandai!" as if Bandai listens to him

Marvel Snap but more of a long form game is a decent enough idea. People are also correct to call the parallels with Smash Up. I think the main thing to ask is: what weight do you imagine the game being? Obviously anything below middle weight (magic is about a middle weight in actual gameplay I’d say), is pretty well covered. I’d be interested to hear about your location system and what impacts control has.

The person referencing Solforge, well I wouldn’t say those are that similar actually. In Solforge it’s basically just keeping the board clear and making for fast resolutions of combat, there’s not really much of an element of territory control, which I feel like is where you’re going.

I also rather like the idea of her. Although I preferred her early concept art where she's more mongolian/sumo inspired. Her current form seems like a joke in bad taste.

More people should play Sorcery. It's a good game and is reasonably well balanced for the first set. I am actually amazed I find myself struggling to beat a 4 power vanilla after playing games like Magic or Yugioh or where a vanilla beat stick is basically unplayable

>I am actually amazed I find myself struggling to beat a 4 power vanilla
In order vanillas to be good you need a few factors:
1) Limited Removal
2)Combat matters
3)Cards designed so cost doesn't strongly correlate with combat power.
>>
>>93155673
Sorcery has all of these things
>Limited removal
Very few cards just kill something. Most of them deal damage. 4 ends up being an awkward number since most of the cheaper removal deals 3 or less damage.
>Combat matters
It is the primary wincon. No "I win" combos that I know of
>Cards designed so cost doesn't strongly correlate with combat power
Jury is out on this one. Some cards, like Vile Imp, are extremely efficient. 2 power, 2 cost, deals 2 damage on summon. Other cards have some sort of drawback, like Sand Worm. In this case the card I am talking about is Autumn Unicorn, which costs 3 but has 4 power. The "drawback" of unicorn is that you need 2 Earth sites to play it, but with the way the game plays out color fixing is very rarely an issue.

It's a genuinely good game and Fire/Earth beat down is a legitimate meta strategy, which should show how low the power level is
>>
>>93155588
=(
>>
>>93155731
>Jury is out on this one
To clarify what I meant by that, imagine two games:
1 where stats scale linearly so the average 3-cost is a 3/3, 4-cost is a 4/4, etc.
The other where the average 3-cost is still a 3/3, but the only 4-cost 4/4s are cards with a single keyword and anything with a complex effect is probably a 3/3.

In the former your opponent will be expected to have an answer to your 3-cost 4/4 next turn, or the turn after if you went first. That's not a lot of time to capitalize on your 4/4. But in the latter, there's a fair chance your opponent simply isn't running anything big enough to contest it at 4, or they only have a few 4-costs that can contest it. That gives it more time to accrue advantage.

The location system as it's currently designed right now is: the game starts with the same 3 basic locations-
Library:
>Units at this location gain the ability [Exhaust] this unit, draw a card.
Temple:
>Units at this location gain the ability [Exhaust] this unit, charge 1 resource from the top of your deck into you resource pool.
Clocktower
>Units at this location gain the ability
[Exhaust] this unit, put 1 basic rank unit from your hand into play at any location on the board.

You can also run other location cards in your deck and activate them to replace any location of the board with one of your choosing.

The general turn structure looks like pic rel.

Also, exhausted units are vulnerable to combat.

If I go with the Marvel Snap-like timer counts down, this is sort of what it'd look like. If I go with a "count" up system where players race to accumulate points, I'd likely change it, make the cards double-faced, maybe use a separate location deck. I'm weighing which feels better to play overall atm.

NTA, but I think if your goal is to make a game that's mainstream friendly, then something that's "like Marvel Snap but...." and you make it more interactive and thorough is the way to go. Especially if you toss in some mechanics from Duel Masters and Pokemon and such like you mentioned. When it comes to licenced games, because the game doesn't actually need to stand on its own two legs, but rather work as promotional material for the core IP, ultimately what's more important is that the game is easy enough to get into, but delivers very exciting emotional moments to keep people coming back. So, it's usually better to stick to formulas that have proven to work: Duel Masters, Pokemon, Magic, Marvel Snap, etc....

My advice would be to take what you have into a solid prototype state, and then test it with live players. You mentioned living in Japan, which has a much more thriving TCG scene. I would recommend taking your game to local shops, asking the owners if they're cool letting you ask people if they wanna try your game for testing, and just trying it out. Especially since you're dealing with the Japanese market, which is very different from the opinions you're likely to find ITT.

I think it's a good idea to get a tattoo on your body, sometimes. You might need to be identified from a hasty photo on a battlefield or like as a waterlogged corpse. I can understand soldiers or sailors getting something they can hide under a uniform but that is recognizable, as an example.

Alternatively, if you have an old L5R mon tattooed somewhere you're automatically a decent person.

I think they just wanted him to rip 2 cards or super combo out of hand on attack the same way blue Vegeta does. If he didn't get the +5k baseline then he'd flip over a 5k combo and you just counter out with a single 10k.

I started playing a couple weeks ago after hesitating for a long time because I don't trust Bandai.
The game is easy to get into so I wouldn't worry about the difficulty.
>supply of the game is fucked resulting in inflated prices
Its still way cheaper than any other popular game and there are a couple budget decks. There are low tier leaders that are viable and cheap like Vivi. And you can buy the "3 brothers" starter deck twice + like 2-3 cards and get Yellow/black Luffy for less than 100 buck and that is a top 3 deck right now.
