Post gateway, I'll post my updated and fixed build in a little bit.
Here's version 2.0 of Bzunthulon's Prototype Power Picker! With that, I think I can call this CYOA complete. It doesn't have enough features to warrant a proper changelog, but it does have some noticeable differences. In short, I added some more exposition, explained how functional immortality can be achieved through each of the powers (with the exception of Reality Warping, as it's as simple as thinking yourself to be), and elaborated on their future growth potential. If you have any questions or complaints, don't hesitate to ask!I think this was a decent first attempt at a serious CYOA, more or less. I've got a few ideas for my next work and will probably put it up to a poll sometime in the next couple of days, unless I'm feeling heavily inspired in one direction or another. I do know that it will have a higher quantity of choices and significantly less description for each, because that should lead to more intricate builds in addition to the planning I've seen so far. I went a bit overboard this time but haven't seen it outside of text CYOAs too often, so I feel like it was interesting to lean more into the crunch.
quick question: is v.197 the last version of Black Magic?
>>94112724
>>94112730(still me)and which one of the many necromancy versions is the last one he made?
>>94112724Yeah, finally a real choice. At least now you aren't forced to go for the obvious trap option to simply not die of old age.

>>94112724>>94112938Also, the titles, images, and text of the powers are not aligned to each other properly and the textboxes of the powers are not the same width. Did you per chance not know the existence of guides in gimp? Gimp -> top left -> image -> guides.
>>94112903>the omniverse will be deleted and the only contribution of its contents will be the raw matter for more omniverses>afterlives are a sham and everyone will be spiritually devoured by this cycle>the only survival is the temporary one of being declared a player character>the "good afterlife" is upholding this ragnarok setup>escape or solutions are not supposed to be your overriding concernIt's not even existentialist, it's outright nihilist. What compels redditors to write these trash cosmologies?
>>94113012AFAIK, only multiverses Epox, not the omniverse.
>>94112995>>94112724Second last paragraph of the intro: "one(1)" should be either "one" or "1".And I just noticed now, why did you bold text everything? I get bolding BZ's, but all the other text too? The text and its size (except Private Malefactor's description's, of course) from before look way better.
>>94112724Still Private Malefactor, the most powerful option that doesn't have at best a 90% death chance. I'll tell it not to harm others if it's possible to fulfil my orders without doing so, then have it hide my information from the various governments that are hunting me.
Post some really old CYOAs.
>>94113090Yea, the previous text was good. I don't get why he changed it.
>>94113142>Post some really old CYOAs.Any preferred theme?
>>94113150No specific themes, but if you have this one specific one I couldn't find online that would be great. There was one specific one I remember with a bunch of magic-like choices. I think you got to pick a couple of them. One of them had a few bottles of some weird fungus you could regrow, one was golemancy, one was geomancy, and there was one with a monk as the picture where you could "stop all human weaknesses" or something like that.
>>94113191>bottles of some weird fungus you could regrowThat part is throwing me. Do you remember anything else about it? A character name, an option, a power . . . ? Golemancy and Geomancy just aren't that unusual in a fantasy cyoa.
>>94113201The fungus one in specific was bottles of a fungus that had milk-white substance, I think you could drink for a power up or healing, and they would slowly regrow over time.It also included this picture for a Pyromancy choice that was really weak. I remember the whole CYOA having a relatively weak power level over all.
>>94113218That's not ringing a bell, but I'll keep an eye out for it. Anyone else?
>>94112724God I love growth. Why does everything feel so much better with growth? Nice update.
>>94113142Any other requests?
>>94113396Horror and Military. I must obtain immortality. I will study biology whenever I'm not working as a maid and eventually get a second job as a researcher. >>94113479>I will join the secret service or create a terrorist organization and raid other countries' labs.Good luck . . . I guess.
>>94112724>If you have any questions or complaints, don't hesitate to ask!Was the bit about Mossad/Interpol/US military a new addition, or did I just never get to that bit in the previous version (because the negatives of the powers seemed to outweigh any positives)?

>>94103534Wow, was this OC posted just for the previous thread? Sorry I missed it, it's really good!I felt really gripped by the type of "narrative" that emerged from it, especially how things the Spark or other characters said overlapped the normal text, giving it a strong 4th wall breaking vibe, and all the choices felt balanced and valuable with each other despite how vague and all-encompassing the setting is (basically multiverse everything)My only major gripe is how the vehicles section included 3 sci-fi vehicles but only one fantasy choice. I personally would have included a small sailing ship that can travel Ways on its own, or maybe making it the "fastest ship in the Infinite", but with the trade off of being small and only able to hold one or two dozen people MAXIMUM, making it more set for comfy adventuring instead of big multiverse wars, but that's just me.I was also a little disappointed by the lack of specific power choices or magic item shops, but I suppose that's more the nature of such a broad coped game/setting. Still really fun read!

There's one for Universal War (a cyoa about conquering the universe and becoming a god), for example, where the guy decided to blow off the original premise entirely. we love reddit here
>>94112833There were always means of staving off old age, but I didn't elaborate on them enough in previous versions. I've always figured that the length of a lifespan doesn't matter so much as what's done with it, but earning immortality is heroic and worth including. It's rare, but I enjoy the trope of earning your immortality, i.e., you'll live forever if you deserve to, like Gilgamesh. That sort of thing.>>94112938>1. You should reduce the font size of the narration and the power descriptions by like 2.I don't want to reduce the font size by too much, my vision's terrible and it's near my limit of legibility. I have been zooming in to edit like I do for reading CYOAs in general, so it should be fine, maybe.>2. Picrel.Thank you for pointing out my mistakes, and I mean that unironically, this was helpful like a splash of water on my face.>A: Cut off.Yes, I noticed that almost immediately after posting.>B: Should be replaced with "work".Everyone I know refers to major work as 'doing', "XYZ needs doing", "XYZ took doing", and so on. It's probably a local dialect but I feel it flows better.>C: Typo. Should be "and".Yes, that was another typo. Fortunately, it was the only other one besides a mistype near the beginning. >There might be more mistakes.I went through the text and didn't find anything else, again fortunately. I altered the formatting some and attempted to expand the image, but GIMP's transparency and fill bucket drove me to paroxysms of rage, so I resorted to realigning the text boxes to fit everything.>You should proofread.I agree. I'm usually much more stringent about proofreading but was distracted by someone IRL and in a slight rush to post before I was dragged away for a couple of hours.
>>94114180>>94112995>Also, the titles, images, and text of the powers are not aligned to each other properly and the textboxes of the powers are not the same width. That they do, I did my best to get them mostly in proportion but exact ratios seems almost impossible. I don't know how everyone does it. Seriously, how does everyone do it? Even reddit pill pickers and ancient MS Paint stuff has perfect alignment! It's amazing.>Did you per chance not know the existence of guides in gimp? Gimp -> top left -> image -> guides.I did not, incidentally. I'm completely new to GIMP and have been figuring it out almost by ear, occasionally watching YouTube tutorials when I hit a wall. This seems extremely interesting and useful but semi-complex, so I'll probably revisit it later on to properly reconfigure the CYOA into a more symmetrical structure. Right now, I'm about to fall unconscious and have to be doing some business in another five hours, so I figure it's better that I post the corrected, pseudo-finished version now.>>94113090>Second last paragraph of the intro: "one(1)" should be either "one" or "1".I'll admit it's stupid but it's a stylistic choice, I like the break between soft fluff and hard crunch. There's a duality to the arbitrary quantification of the text that I like, but I mostly feel it fits with the context- pure information beamed into your head is bound to overclarify.>And I just noticed now, why did you bold text everything? I get bolding BZ's, but all the other text too? That has a VERY simple answer, and it is that I'm retarded and didn't realize I'd been typing in Arial Bold instead of Arial until I went over it with a fine-comb and realized.>The text and its size (except Private Malefactor's description's, of course) from before look way better.I agree. If everything is bolded, nothing is.
>>94114189>>94113114A wise choice, though you'll likely have to explain the exact particulars of what does and doesn't constitute harm ad nauseam. Giving the Malefactor a textbook on your choice of philosophical ethics to read in half an hour or so might help, come to think of it. It's a genius and won't have any difficulties of processing, the dilemma is its skewed, dark comprehension.>>94113149I think I was so focused on copying the text from the MS Paint version and its contents that the actual view of the text escaped me. I need to add some kind of Tunnel Vision power to my next CYOA, kek.>>94113381It feeds into the masculine urge to become stronger and surpass your foes, I think. Even reddit pill pickers and ancient MS Paint stuff has perfect alignment! It's amazing.Gimp, like PS, should have some alignment tools to line stuff up, or at the very least guidelines you can pull down onto the canvas and use to eyeball stuff. Search youtube for specific functions of whatever software you're using and you'll most likely find a tutorial. Also check for clipping masks where you can make a shape and then clip an image to that shape, which basically puts the image inside the shape. You can also move the image around in the shape and resize it too....gimp should be able to do that. makes keeping images all the same size/shape super easy.

>>94115419Yes, which is why I referenced that in my post about how nobody has that. Both are stupid and no characters have it anyways.
>>94115482I got 20/20 sight so I wouldn't know any of that. But still if he can use technology to solve his sight problem he can do so with his CYOA too without making it atrocious to look at for normal people. Imagine if a colorblind author made a CYOA and made it with colors that looked good to a color blind person, then when normal people complain that his CYOA looks shit he says he is colorblind so he made it unreadable to normal people so that it would look good to him. Many fantasy universes have something similar, with magic items or powers being able to speak to you showing a clear sign of higher power level or being more "in tune" with yourself or your training. It's a purely positive, spiritual thing. It's not like the voice is some secondary intelligence like Cortana from Halo bugging or manipulating, it would only talk or guide you when you know you need it and it would be appropriate. While Aro personified the voice as female because he/she is a hopeless waifu-fag, I'd imagine the voice being whatever form you'd find most fitting or desirable in your subconscious, like a cute girl's voice, an edgy growl from your shadow self, or a robot voice from a toy you had as a kid telling you the hard facts.I cannot stand it when people criticize dumb ass shit about something that has legit problems. >>94114215There are numerous means of survival for an energy shaper, especially if they're ruthless. For example, it wouldn't be difficult for them to create a mostly inert mass of plasma in a sewer or dumpster, then get some distance, and remotely change its properties into those of reactive uranium to replace that city with a jagged crater. They could then bluff to leverage that into a hostage situation. Besides that, they could surround themselves with a roiling mass of ultra-dense plasma that fires a pulse of itself whenever it detects a biosignature within a certain proximity. It's definitely the second riskiest of the powers but easily has the most potential for scaling, outside of the obvious Reality Warping.>>94114301If an energy shaper went off the chain, they could easily threaten the earth itself. Consider that they could, at any time, turn every drop of their energy into an antimatter equivalent explosive. Setting a deadman's switch would be easy. The governments dealing with you would know that, but the question is whether or not it's worth trying to kill you preemptively. You generally want to keep your opposition second-guessing themselves wherever possible.>>94114321The heat is unavoidable but it's up to you how the heat dissipates. If you went the plasma ball route, you could set it to disperse outward and have the inside be as cold as a refrigerator while your surroundings are cooked. Alternatively, you could shunt it into the soil to spread out and reduce the sediment in your wake to mud. If you alienated yourself from society or didn't feel like marauding for gas station candy, you could even make some condensed energy mimic the properties of essential vitamins for human survival, wait for it to cool, and simply life off of your own output. It is incredibly versatile, even with its initial shortcomings.
>>94117155>>94114569I think I'm using layers, all of the text boxes are held as separate layers but they're all in the same line as the background, on the side. I'm not sure how that works. I think I may have bungled it due to not knowing what I'm doing from the start.>>94114582Hmm... this all seems extremely useful. I'll look into it once I'm off of work and can do a deep dive. There's an entire world of image-editing software I've been completely blind to up until recently. Why is there so little discussion about the particulars of CYOA creation in the /cyoag/? Maybe they're mostly in some discord? If so, I don't care to join it. I don't care for 90% of forums. Imageboards are ideal, they rip the societal fabric and lay the soul of every post bare. There's a purity of substance to them that can be found nowhere else.>>94114640Not a genuine god, a Demiurge. You lack true divinity, the cosmic 'right-to-rule', and are approximating it through a heinous, perpetual break in the defined limits of the cosmos for your own purposes. This leaves you incredibly powerful and able to ignore the boundaries most gods have to deal with, but your changes lack the same intrinsic permeance (though they can be immensely stubborn, which will only intensify over time) and you are hated by almost every other cosmic entity. Some of those are immensely powerful. To survive as a Demiurge, you'll need to be sneaky and absolute in your ego, because your self-driven will is the impetus that moves your power forward.Accelerating time to brute-force your ascension is possible, but it's a radical breach in the constraints of spacetime and deafening to the nearby cosmos. If you're audacious about it you can ascend in surprisingly little actual time, but it is effectively provoking everything in your proximity.
>>94117175There are also extensive, existential risks involved with altering the flow of time, though if you're careful to avoid paradoxes and solidifying or fracturing time, you'll most likely be fine. Most late-stage Demiurges end up playing tower defense against outsiders with their own pocket realities. I say "tower" defense, but there's no limit to what a creative mind can do to secure their territory. Dealing with them is incredibly dangerous and not worth the reward for an overwhelming majority of planeswalking creatures.>>94114642Reality Warping is overpowered but it's also incredibly dangerous, in the sense that you having it is a threat to the overall status quo. You're a large, juicy moray eel in an infinite ocean. Knowing when to pick your fights and how to lay low is key to your survival.>>94114661It does, yes, but like anon says >>94114678, you can accelerate it if you're willing to put an airhorn into a loudspeaker.>>94114679If I were in the situation of a successful (surviving) Reality Warper, I'd probably make myself a vault in the core of one of Jupiter's moons and indulge crass hedonism for a millennia instead of fiddling with spacetime, but even more aggressively breaking the laws of physics is arguably worth doing for its own sake.
>>94117194>>94114984The font is mostly fine, isn't it? I'm not sure why you have a problem with it. Is it that it takes up two pages? I figure that's a solid argument to make. Ideally, I'd want as few pages as possible to make sure the CYOA is reposted more regularly than it otherwise would be, so more anons can read and speculate or enjoy it. It's functionally a more verbose pill-picker and I'm not under any delusions about its longevity, but it is my first serious crack at one, nonetheless.>>94115373My eyesight problems aren't that bad, it's mostly the fine details that are a bit blurry if I'm not zoomed-in or wearing my glasses. I tend not to when writing, and like to lay on my back while bracing the laptop against my waist balancing its monitor over my face, and my glasses make that slightly trickier. I never could handle contacts.>>94115397That's a fair complaint to have. The question of which font size is optimal is one of those subjective ones that's difficult to parse on your own, I think.>>94115406The design of the CYOA is fine, aside from alignment. I'll look into fiddling with the font-size later, maybe, but because several anons seem to be having the opposite problem I did myself, and it's a minor thing to fix.>>94115433I mostly zoom-in slightly, for the sake of convenience. I don't care about other people's opinions for the sake of them but you've brought the font-size issue to my attention, where I wasn't aware it existed previously. Thank you for that. Now I can take it into account and be more efficient with my CYOA space. It's not tricky to zoom-in on the text itself while editing. I seriously don't understand why it's somehow some kind of controversy. You guys are getting slightly too heated with this, desu.
>>94117201>>94115513>As an author you are an entertainer, your job is to serve and entertain your audience, not yourselfI have to disagree with you there, every act of creation fundamentally comes from the self, and doing it for yourself is the only inexhaustible fount of inspiration. If you don't live with relentless determination for your own purposes and no-one else's, you'll always be hollow without external validation. I create things for myself and always have, but I'm not above a courtesy to help other people's enjoyment of my work if it doesn't bother me. Altering font-size is a nothingburger. I wasn't sure which font is generally ideal for CYOAs so I went with one that seemed reasonable for the image-size, and figured it's better to overshoot than undershoot. No big deal, honestly.>>94115561I actually have top-percentile colour vision for a man and can see in the dark better than everybody else I've known IRL, so I think it's a mostly decent trade off for fidelity, especially when glasses exist. Surgery is for old men and cripples who can't overcome their intrinsic weakness, and while there's nothing wrong with that, it's not for me. Not yet.>>94115590I wouldn't give it too much credence but I did think about the font-size while making the CYOA from the start, and only went with the larger font-size after some inward argumentation. I'll look into editing the font-size and see if I like it better afterwards, and possibly post it, if so. My next project will be much more intricate by comparison, which will require compact descriptions and smaller font-size anyhow.
>>94117216I'm very excited about it. I can elaborate on it some more if you're interested, but in short, it's going to be a slight inversion of the typical planeswalker CYOA format, with some moderate civilizational and army building elements. It should be fun. The important thing with these is to not get bogged down in details. Of course, it's not going to be one of those faggy cosmic janny derivatives like you see every now and then.>>94115629I agree completely and like the repost obscure longer CYOAs every now and then, but this is a four choice CYOA. I'd prefer to keep it to one image if I can without much hassle.>>94115722I'm just nearsighted and don't feel like getting surgery, especially when I'm able to shoot and crack an egg at 100 yards anyway. Even better at skeet. Marksmanship is more about your sense of motion than your eyesight, and that's what it's most important for, so if I've got that down-pat, there's no real reason to worry about the rest.>>94115729This is one of the reasons why I love imageboards. There's no sanitation suffocating conversation, it can be as incedniary as feels right in the moment, or not at all. It's how things should be.
>>94117043Why not the other gateway waifus? You can put it at the start like you did with nexus and demigod and then add them to the family section.
aye, kendrick just opened his mouth

>>94117230>have to pick between nexus waifus and gateway waifusIts so over for monsterbro...
>>94117230>>94117259I'll probably do a full page for demigod family and planeswalker family, 12 on each page, with 6 from nexus and six from gateway.
>>94117344>6 from gateway are going to not make it in>Based on aro's tasteThis is going to be fun.
>>94117357I can feel it, tav, star-jin, aevar, sin, dolores, an mati as the wildcard last one, just because monsterfag wants her.
>>94117377Hilarious to leave out the two waifus related to the most popular combo here of technology + psi lmao. Totally something she would do.
>>94117421Nobody took them as waifus, just as point reductions. Arguably the most liked waifu from the cyoa is legion, aside from mati. And I feel like all that is probably from monsterfag >>94113991
>>94117440Nta, but I couldn't get myself to care about any of nexus and gateway companions. It's weird because I liked the new demigod companions and gateway came after.
>>94116063I've made my peace with nxtub's death.
>>94117377Probably Chrona, Legion, Mati, Aevar, Tav, and Lola, to match the aspects left over from the Nexus companions.
>>94117440Yes its all me, I like legion and mati, and the dragon twins. My nexus build has Kthibhe as my waifu and I do like her. >>94117463Its funny, my first run of ultimate god I didn't care about any of the companions really, then after I played nexus a few months ago I realized kthibhe was my waifu from there and she's in ultimate god. Mati being there as the light dichotomy and have twin opposing aspect wives would be based.
>>94117490>not including mati after being requestedFake.
>>94117504...Are you blind?
>>94117504>>94117509lmao
>>94117509Yes.
>>94117490>Lolabasado
>>94117490Now we get british girl in 2 cyoas.
>>94116924>>With strange aeons, even death will die>Lovecraft was a retard. Why would he write that death can die of old age?Since we're past bump limit . . .Most Lovecraftian texts (such as the Necronomicon) were:1. Written by authors who didn't fully understand the subject2. Said authors were trying to be poetic 3. The translators weren't the best. The "death may die" line is describing hibernation, or possibly some form of stasis. Many Lovecraftian entities are just waiting for their reinforcements to arrive, or recharging after a warp jump, and merely appear to be dead.
>>94117554Nah it was literal.
>>94116063>Do any of you guys worry that one of the authors you like won't post again?>After 8 months I'm sweating.>After 1 year I'm worried.>After 2 years it's over.Hope springs eternal. People were sure that JRPG Traitor was vaporware . . .right up until the night it was released. Many said that Magi Case would never be finished, but we've got it in our hot little hands.
