Let's be real, it's a beloved set but the rot really started with Innistrad. It was the first "pop culture world" and was very popular BECAUSE of that. Now, it wasn't as bad and there was a genuine effort to Magic-fy the pop culture characters and integrate them into a semi-coherent world, but that was the moment when WotC must have realized that making MtG more and more into a brew of pop culture was the profitable way until the logical conclusion of it that was ditching the need to Magic-fy the IPs and just make sets outright based on them. And let's be real too, sets like Duskmourn, Bloomburrow are just soft-UB.

You're forgetting this all started in the in the first with their constant references to fantasy. The most famous card is black lotus based on Conan's black lotus giving wizards great power. They couldn't come up with original creature and just used zombies, goblins, merfolk and elves based on their pop culture depiction rather than anything based on history or original thought.

When they do their next D&D set, they should do away with the clunky dungeons mechanic and make a bunch of dungeon-themed Room cards instead. I play Magic to feel like a powerful wizard. I want to feel like I'm building a dungeon for my opponent's creatures, not going through one.

>>
Welp, at least I drafted two copies of Artist's Talent today.

>>
>>94248179
That's a horrendously bad faith argument. Every concept that anyone can think of is derivative of some other familiar concept. It's impossible to make something that is purely non-derivative, the reference chain continues until it ends at nature, and at that point you're still just referencing nature. However, some things are obviously more directly derivative than other things. Lots of stories have heroes fighting dragons, and are therefore derived from the trope of heroes fighting dragons, but if the hero facing your dragon is a short guy with hairy feet who's there to steal something from the dragon's horde rather than kill the dragon himself, you're obviously referencing The Hobbit specifically.

From one perspective, they're different from normal humans, and therefore they don't fit in with human society, therefore in a sense they "aren't human" which is a point of conflict in many X-Men stories, but technically, they're born human. They're born from human parents. They're not their own species, they're humans that have mutated, hence the name. It'd make more sense to be able to mutate your human creatures into X-Men characters, because that's how it works in X-Men. Nobody in X-Men mutated from a grizzly bear to a half-bear-half-man. (well, as far as I know, but that'd still be the exception rather than the norm.)

Interesting, I thought the black knight trope was just about evil knights wearing scary black armor. (which is indeed the case sometimes.) I didn't realize it had a more specific meaning. That's pretty neat.

This guy do be displaying heraldry on his shield though. (not that it really matters since the point of this argument is obvious direct references vs more general inspiration as >>94248294 pointed out)

Setting has never been a strong aspect of FF. It's generally just the teenage/moron writing approach of "everything I think is fuckin' cool jammed into the same setting". Which is why you have robots, guns, Tolkein-lite, and random shit thrown together with no thought. The games rarely even try to make their settings believable in any way.
Not sure why you'd like FF for the setting. Especially today, where 90% of Jap rpgs use this exact same lame template.

Dominaria might have started from generic blockpieces, but it has become a distinct setting that is rooted in high fantasy.
Magic has already deviated from its high fantasy setting, I can understand that just to try to keep things fresh.
Every one of Universes Within pieces of cardboard has a potential for creativity, for lore making and storytelling that was one of the attractions of the game from the beginning. Every Universes Beyond piece of cardboard doesn't have it, because its story belongs somewhere else. Some Universes Beyond sets can be compelling to any individual because they are already attached to those stories or characters, and they will fall flat to those that didn't already care about them. I will leave out of the argument the flavour clash of Marvel sets, because it is more related to saturation of Superheroes and Legendaries everywhere than any dislike for the characters.

MTG artist get payed peanuts, so they attract either very mediocre artists or very new artists. The only concession gives them is that they can sell prints of their arts freely.
The common joke in the community is if an artist becomes too popular or successful they move out of WotC's price range and they rarely show up in new cards.

It's trivial to make up an explanation. Maybe the Eldrazi look different when outside of a plane. Maybe there's just not that many of them, space is big. Maybe something happened to them with two titans dead and a third trapped. It's definitely set in the blind eternities though, aside from the name we also have the story heading in a direction where people are trying to fix or destroy omenpaths, it could end up the case where travel becomes harder once again but still possible through "spaceships" or other vehicles.

Ok, wild guessing time as I have basically zero idea of the lore BUT that whole Planeswalker depowering was due to someone sealing the Phyrexians away. Meaning some portion of the multiverse was separated from the rest of the multiverse. Edge of Eternities is literally that: A portion of the Blind Eternities that borders on "something" else.
Maybe you can planeswalk between all planets in the same galaxy and the space between galaxies is "the edge." Or someone burned the sky with Omega particles and now only the slow impulse drive is available in this area.

My knowledge of modern YGO is pretty much limited to the fact that Max-C can draw 30 cards in a turn, and that was enough to make me write off the game entirely. If there was a paper Goat community around me I might check it out, but as far as I can tell the game has become unrecognizable to my inner playground-gaming child. Which honestly makes me kind of sad since it was my introduction to TCGs and probably defined my childhood more than I realize. >One of the cards has Chandra holding hands with Nissa
Something tells me this isn't gonna be a fun to play set once again.
>>
>>94249651
They don't need to do that, it happens every few years anyway.
Only Mark and Gavin have been making cards for more than 5 years, the res of the team averages out as working on the game for 3 years.

Why can't this game just have a swift merciful death? Why do we have to watch it become horrible and twisted first?
>>
>>94249660
That other picture of Chandra on this fucking motorcycle looks better. She's even more recognizable despite not having a fireball in hand.
>>
>>94249666
It's fucking hilarious to me that they said nissa was on the vivien land.
It's a massive fuck up for both of them because they both don't exist as characters and they choose to ignore garruk

Given that Hasbro is still hemorrhaging money we might get to see a buyout and for the first time ever, I'm begging for it to be by Tencent, the great Satan of multinational venture capitalism. This company cannot be fixed by an American hand.

>Even more east asian art
>Less niggers
seems good to me
>>
>>94249651
Same reason James Bennet didn't mass fire the staff of the NYTimes. Hasbro isn't (really) in control, so much as they're trying to steer a very sickly zombie.

I agree with the identification of the development changes, but I only see external IP as a major issue: under the outside corruption of the Mtg core, there isn't only one possibility each time, a plane of superheroes or Marvel would fit that position They chose Marvel. A superhero plane with superhero mechanics could have been as lame as the detective setting or the western setting, but it might bring something to the table that isn't just trying to balance a Spider-man card (or 10 cards) with Mtg mechanics without world building and storytelling because it's just an adaptation of someone else's world.
MKM, OTJ, DSK are WotC own IP, meanwhile I don't see in your image Lord of the Rings, Fallout and WH40k, which aren't WotC IPs. I think that designwise, external IPs condition design, if only with the requirement of popular characters to get cards.

I think if you replace:
- Curse of the Swine with Akroan Horse
- Final Showdown with Smuggler's Surprise
I think the repetition and just blatant plagiarism of the better known icon does a better job of showing the sheer lack of effort to craft a more expressive and novel situation. They're not even stealing a trope, it's worse than that, they're just stealing a piece of myth in its entirety without the much needed context that was required to make the original work.

there really is no gap between pop culture and literature, huh? also what happened with the giant spiders?
>>
How quickly can Hasbro pivot after Universes Beyond starts bombing?
>>
>>94249778
>also what happened with the giant spiders?
They will get the tribal support they deserve in the sequel

I skipped over most of the UB stuff because the Image was already crowded as is and I thought that having two at the bottom would be enough to carry the point but adding more explicit UB content would help hammer it home.

Also I am not someone who is against a superhero world on principle, I just would like it to be made under two core principles.
The first goal of the set should not be to shove "the hero disappears to change into their costume" and its like into a MTG card shaped mold, it should be to ask for example "how does red as MTG has developed and defined it over the years present in a world based upon the logic and underlying themes of superhero stories".
The second goal of such a set should be to ask "what does a superhero look like within the design philosophy MTG has built up over the years" and express from there.
So instead of a modern day city it would be something closer to Ravnica, but based off New York instead of Prague, while still having the distance from just being Prague Ravnica had. Like off the top of my head the MTG version of mooks aren't 1920 gangsters with glowy guns, they are big rippted dudes in leather that only covers half their chest, while wielding big maces.

I looked at the sphinx and thought "okay, this is pretty fucking bad". And then I saw the weird wearing a hat and I just wanted to fucking die.

I think the crowning most disgusting thing Magic will ever do is bring in Dr. Who into all this. If there was a more iconic failure to evolve a property to modern aesthetics with the creative power and evolution of modern tools it would be Dr. Who. There's simply nothing that's that old and just unnervingly stays that shit. And the fact that Magic went from peak creative experimentation in the 90s - basically the anti-thesis of Dr. Who, to actually becoming Dr. Who and presenting Dr. Who with a medal of recognition as if Magic had aspired from the beginning to be shit and finally made it after 30 years of trying. It's actually poetic if a sewer line rupturing into the water line could be considered poetic.

The final fantasy set will have approximately like 300-400 cards and they'll have a second extra set that's another few hundred in pre-constructed decks.
>>
>>94249706
If it gets bought out by tencent there won't be a course correction and they'll just simply keep it going as it currently is they don't really fuck around with companies outside of encouraging more monetization
