Now, it wasn't as bad and there was a genuine effort to Magic-fy the pop culture characters and integrate them into a semi-coherent world, but that was the moment when WotC must have realized that making MtG more and more into a brew of pop culture was the profitable way until the logical conclusion of it that was ditching the need to Magic-fy the IPs and just make sets outright based on them.
