>>94296474>>94296480ENTER (although its talking more about design than flavor or worldbuilding)https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/stages-of-design>The Second Stage of Design (Mirage through Prophecy)>For the color pie, Joel worked with me, in conjunction with the designers and Creative team, to start identifying which abilities went with which colors and to start crafting strengths and weaknesses for the colors that we could consistently follow.>The Third Stage of Design (Invasion through Saviors of Kamigawa)>The third stage began when Bill Rose became head designer. Bill's biggest push was to give the block more of an identity. Early blocks would have two new mechanics, usually unconnected, and a mechanical throughline. Starting with Invasion, blocks were built around a theme. The mechanics were chosen to reinforce that theme. Invasion was a multicolor block. Odyssey was a graveyard block. Onslaught was a typal block. Mirrodin was an artifact block. Champions of Kamigawa was a top-down, flavor-centric block.>The Fifth Stage of Design (Scars of Mirrodin through Rivals of Ixalan)>The fifth stage involved adapting this idea of evoking the emotion of playing into the act of design. In addition, it had us rethinking how we use mechanical components. We no longer made graveyard sets. We made sets where the graveyard theme was one component that we built the larger feel of the design out of. For example, Innistrad captured the feel of gothic horror through the themes of graveyard, typal, and making death matter within gameplay.
>>94296544+2 Create a food token
>>94296583>The Seventh Stage of Design (Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty through ???)>One of the most frequent messages I got was "let's return to Kamigawa."I would always answer the same way. I would tell them it was a tough sell to the people who get sign-off on new sets. The Champions of Kamigawa block was one of the worst-selling large sets of all time. It had the lowest ratings of any market research we'd done at the time. Why go back to Kamigawa when there are so many other popular planes we could visit? We decided to make a Japanese-themed set based on pop culture, something modern with tropes that we hoped were more universal. The original plan was that it would be a new plane and not Kamigawa for all the reasons I listed above. But I remembered all the feedback from my blog, so I worked hard, along with a host of other people, to make the setting Kamigawa. Then, something interesting happened. It was a runaway homerun set. Players loved it!Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty's success made everyone sit up and think. It upended a lot of conventional wisdom. It emboldened us to be a bit more radical in our thinking. A proposal that we return to Lorwyn, which had sat collecting dust, was greenlit. We got more emboldened with complexity. We started making more mechanics deciduous. We got more comfortable bringing back old mechanics in small doses, what we call "cameos." We'd done these in Commander decks, why not at high rarities in premier sets? This paralleled a phenomenon that was going on elsewhere in R&D. Aaron Forsythe had pitched an idea of bringing other properties to Magic, what we now call Universes Beyond. For years, we'd specifically chosen not to do that. But as our audience grew, we found ourselves pushing the boundaries of fantasy and genre. The idea of what Magic could be stretched and expanded.Looks like that flavor autists were close in their flavor arguments almost lining up with how Magic views itself internally

>>94298665now that im reading it a second time, I notice it only targets opposing players. there's a bit of nuance then. its still power creep, but not in the same way I originally thoug, thank you for making me check twice
>>94298674That's gotta be cool and I don't really care for clue
>>94298652I wish UG got the Lorehold treatment, even the other schools at least tried to deviate from the usual stuff. I don't even remember how "ramp and draw and big spells" became the norm for it, most of the other pairs got theirs from Ravnica but Simic were about counters and shit.
>>94298682Nah, I didn't notice either, it's cool, man
>>94298680Not according to SALES. You do know what money is, right, for a company? It basically keeps them afloat
>>94298687Rule 1 of /tg/ observed>be excellent to eachotheryou're not as much of a faggot as the rest of us, anon, keep at it, maybe you'll become This Guy one day.
>>94298690Well, I've been called a faggot at least 50 times today so the jury is still out on that one. I'm old and I know manners, where applicable, is all
>>94298685It's because blue and don't share a big overlap. Hexproof isn't something you want to focus so they went with big spells because that's what they share in the common rarity. Green needs big spells as a ramp pay off and blue needs them for the control payoff.
>>94297480i prefer Flanking to banding, also, i'd argue enlist is a less convoluted version of Banding
>>94298705I like your chart. It seems like the more disparity between foci, the more effective you can generally be. Or am I just massively wrong
>>94298706I did take awhile to grok banding and none of friends ever figured it out wholly which have me a big advantage for like a month. But you're not wrong in any way
>>94298705I think keyword counters would be a good space for them to fill. They're the two colors care the most about growth and adaptability, gaining new abilities fits right into that. The green side can maybe focus on giving creatures keyword counters while the blue side focuses on getting bonuses for having counters/keywords or moving counters around. White/green has usually been more about +1/+1 counters, while black sometimes gets this stuff for no reason that I can tell.
>>942986691 times 3 is 3 and this can't target creatures, commandoid.
>>94297632It's not really about cost to stat ratio. A 1-mana 4/4 with no downside would be absolutely playable,, an 8-mana 32/32 would be garbage that will give you laugh for whole 3 seconds before you throw it into your obligatory shoebox full of garbage cards. The cheaper the cards, the more stats matter. Everything costing 6 or more must have immediate effect on the field or give you +fucktillion in card advantage, big numbers are secondary.
>>94298685Drawing cards, ramping and playing bigger cards than your opponent was UG's deal since Alpha. It's literally THE drawing color and THE ramping color. It's just so happens that these two elements of the game have especially positive synergy with each other - to play your big cards you need mana and you need to have these big cards in hand. Also having more mana helps playing more draw spells, too.
>>94297273They basically have 1 or 2 draft archetype for each color pair they cycle through. Like W/B is either lifegain or aristocrat, RG is either ramp or aggro focused on big creature etc... and sometimes you have one archetype a bit different in a set, like how UR in Duskmourn was room control.
>>94296780Remember when you could make a viable modern deck with nothing but cards banned from standard?
>>94298688I would rather the game go back to its popularity level from 15 years ago than have the disastrous effects of coommander’s popularity on card design. We should have gatekept harder and we didn’t. The only good thing to come of this is that standard staples are the cheapest they’ve ever been while literal unplayable garbage has the huge price tag
>>94296710>proto-pioneerThe titans came out when Modern was new, in fact it was that Standard season that SCG bought all the fetchlands then started running Modern events and coverage after making it prohibitively expensive to play the best deck at the time.

>>94299191>I would rather the game go back to its popularity level from 15 years ago than have the disastrous effects of coommander’s popularity on card design.anon edh has been a format since the early 2000s or so, I started playing in 2009 because a friend of mine wanted to play edh, then I did drafting for a few years until I stopped in like, 2013 or 2014 or so.
>>94299496It may have existed, but 15 years ago edh was still “my 100 cards worth of unplayable garbage vs your 100 cards worth of unplayable garbage” that did not affect the design of other formats. I have no problems with casual spergs having a way to play, the problem starts when standard sets are 90% commander bulk and 10% cards that are relevant for real formats
>>94299524Standard was always a joke and modern being turned into modern horizons was unrelated to edh, they just wanted to get modern players to buy shit (and they succeeded). I honestly have no idea what goes on in vintage/legacy and pauper's fine, the only format that was significantly affected by edh was standard and standard was always a shit format.
>>94298682read it a third time and you'll notice it's a sorcery, which make it even worse than bolt.If you ignore shitty format, the one upside it has over bolt is being able to go to dome even through hexproof (and being "yet another bolt" for some formats)

>>94300528naw their economy is so fucking retarded wildcards aren't expensive, they are unobtainablethe rate for wildcards/packs purchased for $$$ is so wildly abysmal compared to the rate you get them for free / drafting / etc that it makes no sense to pay for them, but the amount you'd need to actually assemble a wide number of decks is absurdly prohibitive.Nobody is going to go pay $200 per deck for arena when you can make like 5-10 decks for free.
>>94300511>entomb is gonna get bannedI hope so. Reanimator being a 12-card package you can just shove anywhere is stupid, Reanimator is supposed to be a deck with strengths and weaknesses, not as a side plan in a tempo shell.
Why do so many magic players paint their fingernails in my LGS? Are they in the early phases of transitioning or is it becoming normal for men to do so?
>>94300710>it becoming normal for men to do so?it's a leftist thing, don't worry
>>94296958>good intentions.kek, good one you naive faggot
>>94296544Rules question: if a planeswalker is also another type of permanent, like an artifact here, and it runs out of loyalty counters completely, does it remain in play?
>>94300798No, it's destroyed since it's still a planeswalker with zero loyalty counters.
>>94300798I believe it's a ruling that makes that the case if it's a planeswalker regardless of its other types, so no. It's why, for example, DSK's Kaito has the "as long as he has loyalty counters on him" rider, because if he somehow has 0 on him while just as a creature, he'll stop being a creature, pop back to being a planeswalker, then die. The Gideons that had "still a planeswalker" riders didn't need that, though they usually prevented damage when a creature anyway.
>>94296562Power creep just wilding It's like Hasbro fired everyone and hired only those guys that make super busted anime characters into magic cards
Dunno how many people here care, but Greg Hildebrandt just passed away. The Hildebrandt brothers did some art for MtG including the Tales of Middle-earth Commander deck
>>94301115Fwasn't that art just reused from elsewhere though?
>>94301129Yeah, the LOTR Hildebrant art was re-used from other stuff they did to promote the books and movies and such I think.Greg did do this old classic for Magic, though.
>>94301151his brother Tim did mtg artwork until he died.the brothers are famous in the "nerd" scene.
>>94301115>kenrith as TheodenBullshit, Theoden is red-and-white horse guy, he is boros in both practical and spiritual terms.
>>94301184Yeah, Greg actually did some new Magic art for WOE for last year, even.
>>94300710>>94300745>early phases of transitioningYes. The brain virus is starting to exit its dormant phase, presenting symptoms like nail polish and declaring pronouns before games.
>Wizards prepares to announce more things for Foundations>Hasbro stock takes another drop in preparation
>>94301221Investors are not optimistic, but they don't have to be, the inertia will carry the game forward for another 10 or 12 years. There will be a few more half-finished attempts at online play which will nevertheless make money (just not enough money fast enough to make up for Hasbro's other failures in the long term). Towards the end, people will tried to hide other less-conspicuous failures behind the failure of MtG/D&D, and Hasbro will make a bunch of baffling purchases and investments as the ruling class plays hide-the-turd.
>>94301263What I don’t understand is if wizards is the only part of Hasbro that makes money, why have the other parts continued their existence? If wizards is paying for monopoly and my little pony and shit to lose money every year, why are all those other things still being made?
>>94301316Because it's a big retarded bureaucracy that can't do anything right. Capitalism creates big retarded bureaucracies that can't do anything right.
>>94301341Not doing anything right is the natural result of any large beauracracy.
>>94301316Transformers makes money, not as much as DnD and MtG, but it still makes money.Hasbro's current CEO Chris Cocks, who comes from microsoft wants to company to become a digital or video games company first and foremost, and complete the transition by 2026. And he seems pretty confident that what games they make based on the IPs they own will be successful, despite the development times being very short, publishing two games a year starting late 2025 is just unrealistic.I guess Baulder's gate was good but they fired everybody who had a part in it as part of their cutbacks due to financial losses, honestly Hasbro might have even less time then that other Anon predicted.
>>94301221If things are bad right now, can you imagine when Spider-man set hits all formats?
>>94301341That's not a capitalist problem, that's a problem inherent to all big and old systems.
>>94301580It'll sell incredibly well and make Magic's revenue go up even more while Hasbro burns around Wizards.
>>94301586>oldlol, this isn't an old system by any metric, it's big and centralized, because that's what capitalism does. Capitalism rapidly centralizes wealth by replacing markets with bureaucracies.

>>94301690>>94301680yeah that's exactly what wotc wants people to think. pushing the envelope and then pull back a bit to still get a foot in the door is a very common tactic seen in vidya and say lootboxes

That's too far
>>94301666Agree.
Even 1 UB set is already bad news.If you can't understand you are just a faggot consoomer and a retard. The door to Magic's end has been open with 50% sets being UB.
>>94301775god I hope so. what kind of death are you imagining?

>>94298655>sorcery speed that hits all opponents>thinks this is even close to instant speed that hits any targetZoom zoom the commander containment thread is elsewhere. Begone.
>>94298655Yeah it's worse.
>>94301957If anything I think it's objectively worse than Lightning Bolt for 60 card because it only hits players. Because apparently reprinting Lightning Bolt for Standard would kill the format when it's not even a corpse anymore and it's just bones now.
>>94301973God I'm illiterate, it's a Sorcery lol. Seriously why is WOTC so afraid of Lightning Bolt in Standard?
>>94301973It's an upgraded lava spike, which is nice, but any comparison to Bolt is silly.
>>94301953You think they care about formats?
>>94302024Because Bolt is huge for RDW and they're already having enough trouble balancing RDW as it is. Not that I think it really matters since no one fucking cares about Standard anyway.
They're moving forward with the fortnight plan faster than I thought they wouldMagic planes will stop existing by 2028
>>94302132>2028Well aren't you an optimist? I give them until 2026.
>>94301953>A major complaint from newer players getting into Magic via UB was that they had to play only Commander or Modern>WotC wants Standard to be the on-ramp format>So the products that get players into Magic can be used in StandardIt's a very reasonable argument, all things considered, if UB has to exist, and unfortunately it does.
>>94302024Because they want 3-toughness creatures to exist against aggro Red.
Aetherdrift just does not feel like magic, it feels almost UB-like.i love racing and frequent motor/sp/orts but mixing the two just doesnt work.same goes for the space set. the only set i see next year that feels like magic is tarkir, and even that could change
>>94302187>Aetherdrift just does not feel like magic, it feels almost UB-like.Shut up professor.
>>94302187>Aetherdrift just does not feel like magicit feels like a step up from MKM and OTJ to me
>>94302176>want Standard to be the on-ramp format>refuse to balance it>no one wants to play it
>>94302187its as magic as murders/outlaws/bloomburrow/duskmornnew sets are just excuses to give popular characters silly hats.
>>94302186as ifif you want to block red right now you'd need something like a 0/18 flying wallwtf else is going to block an 8/3 flying trample double strike
>>94302187Card games on motorcycles is great.
>>94302186Red decks don't give a fuck about enemy creatures right now.
>>94302198I think MKM is the current lowest point for Magic sets flavour-wise. OTJ was just kind of nothing because it was terrified of actually doing anything at all with a western setting. DSK meanwhile is a lot of really high highs and SOME low lows. Aetherdrift... I dunno what to think so far. It'll be nice to see Kaladesh and Amonkhet again, and I guess we'll finally get literally anything interesting about Muraganda, and the central conceit of the story does kind of interest me as to what'll happen with the big MacGuffin spark thing, but, meh. It'll probably be fine.
>>94302198maybe a step up, but still not magic.>>94302206its frustrating because something like duskmourn wouldve been better without the references. the horrors felt magic-like and interesting
>>94302187The only theme parks that feel like Magic are the ones I like
>>94302187This faggot seems to come from the Professor's crew... How can you say this shit when you will be getting Spongebob Squarepants, Cloud and Green Goblin in half a year?
>>94302218The only highs of DSK are some of the monster designs and it's not like they're greatest of all time or anything. BLB is the high water mark of 2024 and it's just some Redwall stuff.
>>94302222Like, I'll generally understand that the feedback of "Magic sets based on genres have been too heavy on references lately" as being a thing they've taken in mind, especially with UB now being more prevalent meaning that UB is where they'll put more references by just having the actual thing, but they've already made a lot of these upcoming sets so who knows, but maybe Aetherdrift'll be the last issue like that. Like, I've seen a lot of cynicism around Edge of Eternities being too trope-y but we've seen very little as-is, and I think "space set" is such a WIDE thing that they can be more Magic-y with it. We'll probably get a card called Faster Than Light or something like that but we likely won't see too many overly-specific references.
>>94302246>but we likely won't see too many overly-specific referencesI wouldn't call it too early.
>>94302237That's literally what the professor said, he complained about every set except for Tarkir, this faggot is 100% part of his crew.
Do (you) still enjoy mtg?
this is all your fault, you killed blocks and now we have to deal with magic fornite.
YOU CAN LITERALLY WIN THE GAME WITH HEARTHFIRE HERO AND ONE LAND BECAUSE IF THEY EVER CUT DOWN YOU JUST PUMP IN RESPONSE EVERYONE AT WIZARDS IS A FUCKING IMBECILE
>>94302258The problem with specific sci-fi references is they're either TOO specific and would be a little odd to make reference to, or have become so part of the genre that making reference to them just feels like being part of the genre. It's important to note that Duskmourn DID have overly-specific references, but Duskmourn was INTENDED to be highly-referential, like that was one third of its 'thing'.

>>94302561Bro your swift spear?
>>94303409It's the lends each of the planes concept it cast through. Trying to explore the multiverse and a new plane as a setting versus trying to use the multiverse and a new plane to make something work in mtg. There was still a large mechanical focus of Lorwyn, trying to explore what a plane not grounded in humans would be like and having a tribal focused set design. Some where better than others, the Treefolk are quite forgettable outside of the Sapling and Colfenor, and the Giants are just sort of there. I would say the books are just meh even if I appreciate the atmosphere of Lorwyn far more than New Capenna. Art direction definitely plays a role in this, although New Capenna did have better art direction then some other sets before and after.Lorwyn just feels a lot more realized with the interactions between the races and how they all relate to each other, while on Eldraine and New Capenna it feels like each of the factions is weirdly isolated from each other. Of course Lorwyn plus Shadowmoor has the benefit of being a 4 set block so we get to spend a lot of time there, and as some might say, folklore and high fantasy just feels more magic than new york city. There's also the elemental of Lorwyn which are cool and unquie among Magic's pantheon, the Kithkin and their thoughtweft are nice, I like the Merrow and the Faeriesas well, but the Elves are just okay. Although I don't like the Lorwyn+Shadowmoor Goblins being Black/Red since they aren't very selfish or ambitious. Really we don't get white/lawful Faeries and their turn to a more organized faction in Shadowmoor carries a lot of of the apprtiation I have for them.>>94303450You do know people know what Hobbits, Merfolk, Changelings, Ents, and Giants are, correct?

>>94303507NTA but pic rel is emblematic not just of content territory wizards is not eager to touch in the same way ever again but also in how interconnected the tribes of Lorwyn are with each other as a living world with politics and internal of how various groups view each other, even if it is relatively shallow compared to more complex works.
>>94303097>>94303121>>94303522Oh, I didn't see this. Hopefully this gets a high res released as well. I can work with this.
This kind of card is always good in limited.
New skeleton.
>>94303527>Flash>Prowress>WizardaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>94301203>let's make grizzly bears a 3 for 1fire EVERYONE at R&D
>>94303507>Lorwyn plus Shadowmoor has the benefit of being a 4 set blockThis is pretty much the only difference, tbqhwyfam.
Angels is going to be an annoying deck in standard.
>>94303629>AYO FINNA BE ANGELS AN' SHIT
Disfigure copy.
>>94303624>tbqhwyfamNo idea what this means but if you're saying the one set block model is shit and has led to the themepark-ification of Magic sets then I agree with you.

>>94303543That kind of interconnectedness is problematic yeah, pic rel is the right kind.
>>94303629This is the least "dazzling" angel I've ever seen. The art's just bad too. Look at the knees. Look at the feather in the fore-ground.
>>94303642For what purpose?
>>94303794Really not sure, because Disfigure was reprinted as recently as BRO, so it's not like it's a "card name they don't wanna use" for whatever reason.
>reprinting An Offer You Can't Refuse instead of Spell PierceWeird
>>94303883spell pierce is racist against players of color. they don't have two mana laying around, you white devil.
>>94303883It's easier to justify (to new players) "this spell gives your opponent two mana" than "this spell might not do shit".
>>94303166Your Savannah Lions you ordered, sir
>>94303883An Offer You Can't Refuse is better the longer the game goes on.
>>94303914
>>94303913I doubt they're worrying THAT hard about complexity given other choices they've made with this set.
>>94303638She might be white.
Wait, are spoilers over? Did they actually reprint gates without reprinting Gates Ablaze or Gatebreaker Ram?
what the fuck is this shit? is this the characters mouth?
>>94303996just something in the background
>>94303990playing magic is like watching Empire of Dust in VR
>>94304004God fucking dammit I thought it was a helmet on someone's head.

>Lorwyn-Shadowmoor was my favorite>Play for years hoping to get another set>WotC takes off the mask, Universes Beyond drowning out Magic>Lorwyn release date pushed back for a universes beyond set>Lorwyn might be MKM or OTJ or DSK tier in terms of quality....https://youtu.be/wd4YgudTcnM
>>94303409According to WotC? The difference is that they've had to dumb things down with more pop culture references.
>>94303996bro calm the fuck down, it's literally just armor with wings
>>94304215Are you saying they should've, for example, gone with a heavier Egyptian theme in Amonkhet?
>>94304215According these posts a top-down sets biggest marketing pointed is resonance.
>>94304085wouldn't propably worry about it
Redditors are liking the gatekeeping the game. How is the Gatewatch format coming along? With the One Ring banned what cards are allowed to prosper.
I hate Reddit so fucking much and how much they love UB and the amount of retarded arguments they spout daily makes me wanna puke and tells me this game is already beyond salvation because such braindead people are now the target audience of this game.
>>94304328Reddit also hates UB though.
>>94304257You asked what the difference was, and that's what WotC says the difference is. They aimed for very surface-level Egyptian aspects in Amonkhet in order to avoid alienating potential players. The result is something that comes across as a vaguely Egyptian theme park. There is very clearly a distinction between how WotC used to handle referencing real-world history and mythology in older planes, and how they handle it more recently. If they'd gone deeper into Egyptian theming or had more oblique references, maybe Amonkhet would have felt more like an actual setting, but there's no way to say that for certain.
>>94304374And now Amonkhet's just a backdrop for a race. At least that sort of works for Kaladesh, it has a lot of vehicles and shit there. Amonkhet's just... Desert. Is Samut gonna just be racing on foot, or something?
>>94303527>>94303585>negroOMG SO PROGRESSIVE IM GONNA CONSOOOOOOOOM
>>94304520>>94304520>>94304520
>>94304311>gatewatch formatPray tell, what format is this?
>>94303927>UBkysTry this instead
>>94304495Samut racing on foot would make sense. She lost her spark, she presumably heard about the race given a portion of it is happening on her home plane, and one of the few details about her that anyone remembers is that she uses magic to give herself super-speed. Which means there's basically a 0% chance that she's participating, because it would require the designers to think for more than a few minutes.
>>94303540That's what makes it based.
>>94303097Kiora, the rising pants
>>94303996anon you need to go see an eye doctor as soon as possible. there isn't any character in that art, it's literally just some torso armor with wings. it's not being worn
>>94299191Commander isnt the problem. it's WotC killed the identity of the game. too many formats and 5 releases in a year instead of start a new in fall, continue it in winter, finish in spring, summer for cores/one offs. rotate em out. it's a faggy new cartoon every 2 months.
