Really enjoying this style of painting. Scratchy and stylized.
Just some more stuff like the nurglings and he´s done.
>>
>>94396800
Huh, interesting to see. Maybe something about the way you paint changed? Do you use your brush for stippling? I remember reading some reviews a long time ago that some people found that certain brands of wet pallet paper really destroyed their brushes.

Nothing lasts for ever thats for sure, I feel like cleaning a brush every session probably does shorten the lifespan too. I have also seen these new water pot products on the market with a metal coil in it, I make sure not to rub my brush on any surface when in the water pot.
>>
>>94398372
I really dig the green color anon. He looks great. Consider some satin varnish? Your model looks very matte all over, and sort of comes accross as dry looking in that reguard. I think you could add some really nice pop with some varying surface finish.
>>
>>94398398
>Do you use your brush for stippling?
Not really. But I think that could contribute for sure. As for palette paper, I use Redgrass papers I bought.
>>
>>94398343
What do you mean by drybrushing dust?
>>
>>94398461
All the powder that gets into a model from drybrushing sometimes. Gets right into the creases.

there should be some dampness either from the paint or very slight wetting of the brush if you are using a powder/dry technical, or you need a stronger paper towl like kitchen towel to dry it on. If it is in recesses you could just wash them with something dark though.

if it is pigment you are using, simply by brushing it out with an unloaded soft brush. If it is paint you are using, it shouldn't be so dry that it is dusting into recesses to begin with anyway, but if it does, again you should be able to brush it off. If it is damp drybrushing getting into your recesses, you probably want to town down how vigorous you are drybrushing.

When you do the stripes on the headdress, do you leave the small gap in between each as black or do you paint it blue?
I initially was filling in that spot as yellow and when I stopped doing that I noticed a big improvement on the look

Glad you like There's probably a more efficient way but what I do is paint it roughly in blue, then block in the yellow stripes. Afterwards I put a wash either directly in the recceses or just over the entire thing and relayer the raised blue and yellow parts

Two questions as a new painter
1. Do i need to remove the paint with acetone before i use sprue goo to fix this gap on the shin?
2. Why does army painter red make my model smell like burnt shit? I used it as a layer on the base and covered it with (not nearly enough apparently) Martian ironearth, the base itself is 3d printed PLA

Sprue goo will melt any paint it comes into contact with. In all honesty at this point I think you'd be better off filling this with milliput/green stuff and painting over that but I'm not big on building so I might be talking out of my ass
>>
>>94400004
Meds. Keep them to yourself.
>>
>>94400133
1: Sprue goo, and most other fillers, won't mind that the paint's there. Odds are they'll bugger up any paint they get into contact with, but since you have to paint over the filler anyway...
Also be careful with acetone around these models, since it'll melt the plastic into sprue goo if you put on too much and can coarsen up the surface even if you don't.
2: Something in it apparently happens to smell that way.

Anons, I find myself befuddled as to how to make my Librarian distinct, with a red-blue-blue-red quartered scheme of the Brazen Hawks. When one’s default scheme already has enough blue, how then to make the Libby distinct? I was thinking a distinct unique color across the entire model, would welcome your input as painterly sorts. Example above of my scheme.

Good job anon! Not bad for your first try. I think you should've left the lenses in a single color until you'll a bit better at brush control, the white looks weird as it is now. I'm painting my first army and this model was the first one that gave me any amount of trouble. Over half the time putting on the base paints has been spent on the weapon alone, and over half of that time on the weapon was spent on just this orb and the frame it sits in. Ravager in progress

I hate literally everything about this model. It is infuriating to paint.

I'm forcing myself through it, because after this, 3 raiders, and 2 venom's, I'll have a full 2000pt Drukhari army battle ready and ready to play.

The other vehicles are getting a much quicker, much sloppier painting jobs. And seeing how sloppy this one already is? That's saying something.

I hate these boats.

Also rusto primer and primer + paint are kinda shitty, X2 primer's pretty good.

Mine says "Painter's touch" but not paint+primer. The problem I think is the roughness sticking out more with metal than it would with normal colors, the gunmetal I'm putting on has more coverage than my other metals so I'm not sure it's a color issue

Noooooot quite WIP related, but I figured this would still be a good place to ask if y'all don't mind indulging me.

Just ordered some bits and models, gonna make a friend a model for his army for his Bday. Now my actual question though, how would you guys recommend packing a model for shipping? I was thinking about getting one of those baseball display cases or something and blue stuff/tack to stick the model down, filling it with like the shredded paper for gifts or something reasonably soft and then taping the display case down before dropping it off at UPS or something where I can have them add a little more protection and marking it as fragile.

Do you guys mail models at all and how would you recommend packing it to attempt to prevent the least amount of damage?
>>

I sell shit on ebay. You mostly have the right of it. Easiest way is to wrap the model in small-bubble bubble wrap, then place it in a hard container with foam or packing paper so it can't rattle around. Box that.
Most mail-order minis companies just put the mini in a small ziplock, then put the whole thing into a small box with some bubble wrap. Doesn't work with painted stuff or fine resin but it's fine for raw metal minis.

I have around 40 random pots (mostly vallejo and citadel) from which Id say at least half was a miss. I dont want to buy any mega set, but when I do paint I feel Im lacking variety (mixing works great except I steuggle to reproduce the color when I come back to the desk a month after)

>>
>>94404903
NTA but I often find just ebay is pretty good for bits, and you can filter by seller location
>>
>>94404898
Depends on what the ambient light is in the imaginary location your minis are in. If they're outside under a blue sky, blue makes sense. Purple happens automatically when you add blue shadows to reddish surfaces (like skin). If your models are inside or on an alien planet, the shadows would reflect whatever the main color of the environment is. Perhaps red for a mars type setting, or orange for indoor lighting. Blue and purple are often used, because we're so used to that being the standard here on planet earth, much like yellow/orange lighting due to the sun and electric lightbulbs.

I fucking hate vallejo metal color gold
Thin as fuck (i know it’s more for airbrushing but still), takes a shitload of time to shake the paint, the color is barely actually golden and more like a slightly yellow metallic and even after you shake it as hard as humanly possible it still separates almost immediately
Maybe I got an old or a dud bottle or smth but fuck it annoys me

People buy paints unrelated to current projects? Wat. Why? I buy my paints alongside the kit/box/model, no different to buying ingredients for recipes I am going to cook. Do you also just randomly buy galangal despite having no intention to cook thai? Sounds like FOMO madness.
The only paints I have that I don't use are the result of boxsets being cheaper than singles. So e.g. when I painted a Luftwaffe plane, I got the Vallejo Luftwaffe set, 1 of those paints remains untoucjed, but it was still cheaper than getting the other paints as singles.

>>
>>94405162
Ya, I do that, but I am still not getting racecar red if I know I am never going to use it. I'd get something I would conceivably need a lot of anyway, something genereic that works for lots of different stuff and projects spanning the depth and breadth of the hobby. PVA glue, PU foam, cork, basing mats like you say, gloves, coffeestirrer sticks, bluetack, a spare sprueclipper, sanding sponges and sticks, brush cleaner and soap, a spare brush or two. The list is near endless, it is also why I think anyone with this as a hobby is extremely easy to get gifts for, loads of stuff to get in all price ranges. My mom will to this day come round with a box of random house stuff she no longer needs or saw on sale or w/e with a "thought you might be able to use this". What's never in that box though is racecar red paint.
>>
>>94405162

>a bit too much plastic for just starting out

How so?
From a "veteran" painter PoV, knowing how much time you can spend to paint one miniature, maybe.
From the Pov of a new player? He might or might not have known that the Combat patrol is enough to play. But since he already had the Sword Brethren and Company Heroes gifted to him, what else should he have bought? He can't play with just those two units, so combat patrol it is. And one character model (that he already painted) is not adding too much of a backlog either.

If he continues to paint the minis on this level, the whole bunch will be ready to play with next weekend for sure and then he can play the tabletop and has all the time to watch or read some guides on how to make good looking black armor or other basics of painting.
>>
1. How can I prevent my brush drawing paint all the way up? This was from a ~1h painting session where I did nothing but continually applying paint to plastic. Also, the brush appears to already start fraying at the tip. I am not a caveman and can apply proper pressure, so why could this be happening?
2. What are some good brushes anyway? This is one I grabbed from an arts & crafts store, "artist's brush for acrylics". Do I have to buy a mini painting brand mini painting brush? If yes, what *are* good brushes?

Plz no bully, I haven't been at this for too long.

I also had a picture attached, but since some piece of shit in my range got it "temporarily" banned from uploading files (and it doesn't even say for how long), there will be none here. Just imagine a brush with a "clean" tip and a bunch of paint right up to the collar. And no, Hiroshimoot, I will NOT buy a pass, go fuck yourself.
>>
>>94405826
1. cheap brush will split asap and the fibres are not so good. put your paint on a palette, add a little water, take paint from the edge, when you notice it building up, wash and reload.
Helps to have a paper towel (or thumbnail) to wipe excess paint off of for highlights
2. probably want to get yourself some rosemary&co series 33, as cheap as top quality goes you won't worry about ruining a few and you can learn how top-end tools go.

>Do I have to buy a mini painting brand mini painting brush?
Nah, those are just rebrands.

There's a lot of differences in brush quality, and usually you get what you pay for.
>>
>>94405826
Get some brush soap from your lcoals arts&crafts store (many different brands, probably matters little which, it's just a block of really fatty soap since our brushes are essentially the driest kind of hair imaginable), it'll help keep your brushes ok for longer. Also try various brands of brushes from what you have ready access too, you'll probably find that some that go to hell in a hurry while hopefulyl some other brand will provide decent bang for your buck. Special mini painting brushes aren't really anything special, as for cheap vs fancy stuff you can go really far with just basic synthetic hair brushes, though eventually you're going to want to try some nice sable brushes too. Though you'll probably never abandon the cheap ones entirely, they do a lot of jobs just as good and some things (drybrushing, stippling, to a lesser but extent metallic paints) aren't kind to your brushes.
>>
>>94405508
Really good for a first timer. You have pretty clean applications and stayed within the lines. I can see that some of your pant looks a little lumpy, this might indicate that you had too much paint on your brush, or that you didnt wait long enough between painting new layers.
But they look great for a beginner, and like the other anon said a wash is the next place to experiment to get some greater depth and shading.

>>
>>94405826
>How can I prevent my brush drawing paint all the way up
I hate to be snarky, but the answer is pretty much by being careful. Dont dip your good brush in the paint pot (you can use the back side to transfer paint to your palette), dont mix your paints with your good brushes, dont load tons of paint onto your good brushes, dont apply washes with your good brushes (as these wick up more than normal paint). Nothing can make a brush last forever, but being mindful of your actions helps.

>what are good brushes
Buy a winsor and newton series 7 size 2. And do not get tricked into the "miniature" ones. You want the normal water color one. Longer bristles means less likely of getting the paint into the ferrule.
https://www.dickblick.com/items/winsor-newton-series-7-kolinsky-sable-brush-pointed-round-size-2/

But try to only use your good brushes for when you need to, as a single nice brush can cost more than a bag of shitty cheapo brushes that work just fine for basic stuff. I only use mine for painting eyes and the very finest highlighting.

Depends on technique and skill level.

All the banners in >>94402343 are one or two layers of paper, which was how it was done in the old days. I'm switching to plastic banners for my newer squads, but if you live in a country where foodstuffs still come in metal squish-tubes, it's my understanding that those tubes make excellent banner material once they're empty if you cut them up right.

It's honestly pretty fun Tried to do a lamenter as they are one of the first space marine chapters I learned about, absolutly fucked up trying to do the insigna free hand, guess it's a lesson to watch proper tutorial, will probably keep it as is and finish all of the other details before painting quite a few orks minis

Need your opinion/help lads. Should I leave well enough alone and leave this black spot as a "shadow" or should I attempt to repair it? I was able to repair/hide all the other cracks/chips but this one might be beyond my meager skills.
Also anyone know the blue color used for the spectral skulls.
His sword is also bent, is it possible to warm it under hot water and then bend it back true with out damaging my repair job? Would varnish prevent the water/bending from damaging the paint?

>honestly, I got this infernus marine for free at a warhammer shop
This is a neat deal, and I love that GW does this. You can get easy-to-build Infernus marines on the cheap, as they came in the Leviathan box (two sprues of five each) and some of the magazines, but this model - with his textured base - is unique and does not come with the regular kits.

Like adding blind box heroes or commemorative series models, it's a fun way to swap some distinction into a squad of ladz that tend to all look alike after a while.

I'm painting a bunch of Tau drones. I hate the clear plastic bases, but I don't know if I want to get and base a bunch of individual drones. I'm thinking about maybe just drilling a hole in a lot of tau model bases and letting them slot into the bases of my units with a piece of armature wire. I guess if I were to ever hypothetically play a game of warhammer I could just pop them in and out as necessary? Does anybody see any problems with that idea?
>>
>>94408090
Unless the rules have changed significantly since I last looked into 40k the obvious problem would be that the drones are not just markers or decorations, they are units in their own right. So you need to be able to move them independently and that means they have to be on bases in their own right.
You could probably use a piece of brass wire painted black for a more minimal approach, or you could integrate them into the environment somehow (mount them on small trees or pieces of ruins depending on your basing scheme)
>>
>>94408090
per 10th edition they're tokens, not models, and don't even need to be present on the board. I have a fully painted Tau army and exactly zero painted drones.

So guys, what are some of the challenges of gluing ALOT of skulls to a cape? I'm trying to recreate the cape of the Skulltaker for my Master of Executions cape so once I get the "Citadel Skulls" box, then once that arrives just start slapping them things on. But they are all pretty small and contact area probably isn't to great with the cape being curved and all, or would they be so small that any amount of plastic cement will pretty much be enough without much other thought?
>>
>>94408708
That’s a tough one, it may help to sand the side that will be facing the cape down. Trying to get them flush will serve to increase the surface area of the glue or cement

You are going way too maximum effort on this. Just find a contrast/speed paint in the color you want and do that. Paint a light grey and white undercoat in a pattern if you want, but do yourself a favor, and just be ok with the results. Hit it with a dry brush or edge highlight at the end of you want, but you are going to do so many energy weapons and bits in this army, just find an easy path forward! This is a light grey undercoat with white highlights, followed by doomfire magenta contrast. Then a fulgrim pink dry brushing followed by an AK interactive florescent Magenta dry brushing.

Drukhari newbie here again. So after seeing how tragic the bit situation is, I've got a couple options. I could buy the Scourge box for the blast pistol bit, from amazon this is like 34. I mean I like them and would use them later, but yeah. The other thing is giving the Archon a right hand option from one of the Kabalites hanging on the Raider. It's a small blade, so he would have no visible pistols, and then I could say he had any pistol right? For the Archon head, I could use an incubi head instead, which *kinda* looks like the Archon with Soul Trap head, but I dunno if that'll look good.

WGA historical minis are rather small, compared to what GW sells.
WGA sci-fi minis (i.e. everything thats labeled Deathfields) is GW guardsman scale.

If its just the heads you are after, they should work well enough with cadian sized bodies, but full minis will be noticeably smaller.

There are the Grognards, from the Deathfields range, they include Kepi style hats/heads too.

There is also this range here:
https://www.myminifactory.com/users/GoldenDragonGames/collection/marcher-new-french-republic

Scale is pretty much GW guard. Maybe you find some parts useful.

I posted this a couple threads ago already, but I’m kind of with anon. I got a bunch of Vallejo “air” paints and am discovering how much I like the convenience of prethinned paints. It’s 100% less cost effective, and you’ll definitely need regular paint for when you need something thicker or a specific viscosity… but having “air” paints for certain things is kind of nice since I can brush them on right from the bottle. Vallejo “air” black has pretty much been my go-to black for the past month. And I have a box of US desert camo colors in the “air” version that I reach for a lot when I’m doing terrain or just brush/sponging camo.

This. But lets be real, we are talking about cents here for the usual hobbyist. If you paint/spray through 50+ pots of paints a month then we could start to discuss the cost effectiveness, but with normal useage for miniatures, a single "air" pot will still last very long.

I'd never airbrush it, its for streaks. Thin lines then feather them out with a barely wet brush with white spirits on it. You could use it as a wash, same routine really. I have no idea why you'd airbrush it or want to airbrush an enamel based product.

Buy some brush soap. I know people say use shitty brushes but I'll easily get a year of regular painting out of proper brush and you're driving a rolls royce the entire time. Nazi fences. Scatter terrain from Rendra. If you want to build a giant burning.. symbol. Well no one can stop you. I like using them to break up charge lanes while giving ranged units something to shoot past. Makes cover more dynamic than just big stone cubes.

Hope you enjoy Anon. Was nice to share some of my autism with a fellow mini agnostic gamer.

>>94414141
>also how do I even transfer paint from citadel pot
once you've established an eye for how thin things should be, and whatever mixture of thinner/water/retarder you like - put a bit of water in the reservoir, and just take a brush load of paint from your citadel pot and swish it around in the water to mix it with the water and whatever additives you need.
>>
>>94414203
Do you just rinse out the reservoir with water when you switch colors?
>>
>>94414266
Yeah. Buy a little squeeze bottle and just flush it with water upside down, sometimes requires a swish with a brush or wiping out with a paper towel.
>>
>>94414281
You don't have problems with a new color mixing with the old color in the gun, or do you spray on a piece of paper or something until you know it's good?
>>
>>94414141
>also how do I even transfer paint from citadel pot
You must first purchase the Citadel™ Texture Tool© to transfer your Citadel™ pot paints to a Citadel™ Servo-Skull Palette© before you can use a Citadel™ brush to paint your Games Workshop™ licensed miniatures, ideally under the supervision of a Games Workshop™ employee in one of our Warhammer™ stores.

Nta, but I just run water through it until it comes out clear, then run a few drops of thinner through to "lube" the needle/nozzle again.

It really is just a case of doing it, if you are really scared of ruining minis, get a non expensive one and a jar of IPA. Single layers are usually thinner than brushwork, so it comes of basically instantly when you dunk a single layer of airbrush in IPA.

That mini looked airbrushed, if you are airbrushing indoors with no vent (which I presume is the case if you are painting near your keyboard) then any and all overspray us going to just settle as dust somewhere (unless you are spraying oil or lacquers, in which case carry on my sweet summer child of reduced life expectancy)

The volumetrics are nice, maybe you could try to blend them a bit better? Also like the other anon said, highlights should be brighter towards the top, not darker. I didn’t know black primer isn’t good for skin tone.
I tried to salvage it with a second coat of white and flesh tone but I don’t know.
Any advice?
I’ll touch up the accessories so it won’t be skin tone next go round.

reikland fleshshade to start, we can work up from there.
>>
>>94414966
no reason to panic. Just apply more thin and even coats until you have something solid built up. Might take a couple of coats - more than two - but fine.
When you do this the next time you can also just base those areas with a midtone like a medium brown first.

If you have a paint with poor coverage, undercoating with a mixture of itself and something stronger sometimes can help. I generally use VMC black-grey for this. Dunno what the equivalent would be in other ranges.

White is probably the overall easiest since you can do any color skin over it and there's plenty of good white primers available
Grey ain't too bad either
A brown or a tan would be the best but I think those would be a bit harder to find and I've never seen anyone say anything about them so they could all be shit.

Probably comparable to white in that you can easily put another base color over it but I don't think any bleedthrough to a pure yellow is going to do any favors for most skin colors like white, tan or brown might.

anyone have the mega from Grimdark Compendium's new cadia series?
>>
>>94415667
any. just put a lighter base over it, then the skin tone
>>94414966
just get a solid skin tone layer. or put a brighter colour as a base for the skin tone to go over
glazes too can be another way to help.
>pretty much why i always prime black (best primer colour, has best coverage and is great as a base for metalics/colour shifters) then put any shade of white or (rarely) a light grey base on top
>at least you werent painting yellow over black and having it transform into green
colours are weird
overall you could consider the darkened colour of the skin as the darkest/shadow part of your skin tones for your minis. so it can be a good thing if you can adapt to it
>i love across the realms sculpts too
very based taste, his guard series is truly where he peaked atm
top tier snoo snoo ogryn + great tanks too

>>
>>94415835
>>94416606
I don't have white or grey primer, only black. What do i need to do to paint skin?
>>
>>94416612
>lighter colours need more layers to be solid/get better coverage compared to dark ones
youre doing nothing wrong with the primer
primers are meant to help with paint sticking to the mini, thats all
too many people think its supposed to be a base paint JUST because you can "life hack/hobby cheat" it as a base colour
>i am now gaslighting myself to think that transparent primers exist
couldve swore they did

so yeah just use ANY primer that covers the mini, then put a base colour for the paint colour/type you are using
>dark for metals/colour shifts/another i cant remember (those eldar gem ones form citadel?)
>light colours for light paints like skin tones, florescents, or those easy paints like contrast and speedpaints, and whatever all the other brands ones are called from green stuff and AK
>>94416623
put a white base paint over it. corax white is cottage cheese pain in a bottle. but any acrylic paint thats a bright colour is best.
can even do off whites or warm tones if you want to change how your paints look over them. but just stick to neutral white for non-unpredictable "normal" colourings.
>wraithbone/warm toned whites with a red over it looks amazing for blood angles
also cold toned base paints for corpse'y looking skins
>>
>>94416623
>>94416653
i SHOULDVE added that when I put a white base over black i drybrush its on
>anons couldve been putting terrible coverage paints over black in layers RIGHT AS WE SPEAK
damn that would be agonizing sorry lol
most of the time good ol' duncans 2 thin coats meme tactic is fine enough with something like bugmans glow or whatever base skin paint, most likely more than 2 with most skin tones
>so as long as youre not making a texture with the paint its fine
dont even NEED full coverage woth you darkest layer of paint as the lighter paints are going over it anyway
>>
same tactic for painting a white, just put a lighter grey underneath before the white to help it be a solid colour
i see black templars pauldrens painted that way pretty much always
