The amount of Tyranids in orbit casued a living aurora borealis like formation visible during night.
And depending on the hive fleet size, they already drown distant stars when coming in and they cover the local sun in shade.

Now that sounds cool until you think about it, how is that possible since the light is coming from the sun, there's no light shinnng onto the sun they are shading

>Tyranids create artificial night when they invade
The dark Eldar and some chaos nights do the same thing when they attack. Its a really kino piece of imagery that at least 3 factions do in 40k and like no one else in sci-fi, pulpy or otherwise has the tech to do so or the interest in doing such a form of terror tactic. Should be represented in animated 40k stuff more imo, under appreciated how errie sudden night is during the day, even when people expect it via eclipses

>Though the circumstances of their initial meeting are known to few, the once-lost Primarch of the Dark Angels and the Warden of the Imperium Nihilus fought alongside one another prior to and during the Battle of Idolatros. Just as Roboute Guilliman found himself impressed by the capabilities of Commander Dante, so too did Lion El'Jonson. The two have since formed a close understanding, and whilst the Lion departed in the wake of the battle in order to reorganise his badly mauled Chapter and pursue his own hidden agendas, the Dark Angels and their successor Chapters have agreed to contribute a sizeable number of warriors and vessels to Dante's fledgling Fleet Nihilus. Captain Lytheus of the Penitent Blades has remained upon Baal to oversee the Unforgiven attached to Dante's battlefleet; his Chapter's expertise in void and aerial combat will surely prove invaluable in the fighting to come.

5e (or earlier but they were pretty sparse) codex maybe? I've only read one novel and there weren't nids in it so I can't think where else I'd possibly have picked it up.
It was about how tyranid interstellar travel works. They don't go through the warp, they do some kind of gravity slingshot from the destination planet(?).

>Disastrous side effects are caused by this method of manipulating a system's gravity. The ensnared planets will often experience earthquakes, solar flares, tidal waves or other natural disasters in the period between a Narvhal harnessing the system's gravity and the Tyranid fleet actually arriving. For the Tyranids this is of course another weapon as the defenders will be busy and disorganised dealing with their own planet turning against them.
From 5ed Tyrnaid codex. Wonder why it was never rementioned in later codexes, maybe GW retconned it since the gravity well they use to travel is using the starts gravity not planets

So far we have identified 3 possible lost legion chapters:
>The (original (and probably also the new) Soul Drinkers:
Most likely the part of the 11th legion adopted by Dorn, considering their personality doesn't match the description of the 2nd and that their enhanced omophagea and physical changes (space wendigos) would fit the native american theme of the Rainbow Warriors, the original 11th legion).
>White Templars:
Most likely the part of the 2nd legion adopted by Dorn, considering their personality matches the description of the 2nd)
>Sons of Malice: Most likely the part of the 11th legion adopted by Guilliman (again, excessive cannibalism also Malice is basically Malal whose sacred number is 11).

I found a printer service that sells 40K compatibles, with "14k Red Wax Resin" printed in 0.025 layer height, with anti-aliasing - pic related.
Is this a good standard for bits or would I need to work a lot on them in order to get them paint-ready?

they're not bad, but they don't deserve to be their own faction, just like Grey Knights or Death Watch
>>
>>94432229
they are a very small range and a very small force in the fluff and most of the times they deploy is as a few squads in support of other imperial armies and that means they would be better as something that exists within the imperial agents codex rather than their own thing

the hyper-elite nature of the army creates an all-or-nothing situation for gameplay that makes the battles boring or frustrating with little inbetween

due to the low model count, the relatively low price point, and the fact most of the model can be painted with one metallic colour, they're often the choice of beginners who don't actually want to play a wargame with an army they have to paint, these people have a plethora of other ill characteristics, stereotypically

if marines have a problem with the so called "bolterporn" that creates an unreasonably inflated reputation of the actual capabilities of marines, this problem is even more present with custodes, this hype at times borders on being obnoxious and involving autistic "power scaling"

finally

How skilled with medicine are Apothecaries? Like I get that they can perform surgeries on marines just find but I'm wondering how much of that can be chalked up to the Astartes physiology already being pretty robust. Like could an apothecary reasonably perform surgery on a regular human?

How do Space Marines even select for Apothecaries? I feel like your average marine isn't going to get too many chances to show aptitude with medicine in their day to day duties.

Lastly, I know there's a couple of chapters that get a bit weird/obsessive with their Librarians or Techmarines. Are there any chapters, besides the Red Scorpions and Blood Angels, that do anything weird/obsessive with their Apothecaries?
>>
Dumb question I'm genuinely interested in. How would the Imperium react to super hero type figures if they were to pop up? If some random human got superman powers would they be seen as heretical and killed or would they accepted as a tool/heroic figure?

If it turns out they've been sent away by aeldari mind raped rowboat to make killing the emperor easier than that's sort of grimdark I guess but how else does it make sense for the emperors personal army to go do stuff? How are there even enough of them to go out and fight shit?shut? I'm assuming it's for fluff reasons like how orks getting all that beastsnagga shit is just to shoe them devolving further.

At best they're sanctioned as a living saint, their existence is justified as a gift by the emperor and are used as a propaganda tool, worst case they're assumed to be a mutant or corrupted by chaos, and would be captured and executed. Potential middle ground they could be discovered by a planetary noble who tries to use them as a means for their own insurrection.

>How skilled with medicine are Apothecaries? Like I get that they can perform surgeries on marines just find but I'm wondering how much of that can be chalked up to the Astartes physiology already being pretty robust. Like could an apothecary reasonably perform surgery on a regular human?
Short answer yes, how do you think space marines are made? They proform surgery and implantation on children. Apothecaries are in charge of making new marines, creating marine organs, fixing wounded marines, implanting cybernetic or vat grown limbs, putting marines in dreadnought, countering enemy toxins and alien pathogens that marine immunity system can't handle, they also devise their own toxins and countermeasures against aliens, especially when in deathwatch, monitor health of marines. Also there is big diference between battlefield "surgery" that is more like injecting marine with chemicals so he will stay alive and surgery once wounded is evacuated. They can and do preform surgery on normal humans, but outside of creating new SM they have no reason to do it.
>How do Space Marines even select for Apothecaries?
Same how they select chaplains or techmarines, they observe and test recruits, and there is a lot of ocassions where marine can show interest in medicine, because marines get wounded all the time.
>Lastly, I know there's a couple of chapters that get a bit weird/obsessive with their Librarians or Techmarines. Are there any chapters, besides the Red Scorpions and Blood Angels, that do anything weird/obsessive with their Apothecaries?
You just named entire bloodnline of space marines, genetic lineage that have it's own codex and entire army of successor chapters is this not enough? Grey Knights also have special apothecaries in Palladin Squads who are most elite GK terminators.

Excuse me, Magos?
If the Ultramarines defeated Hive Fleet Behemoth by making a Warp Drive go critical and effectively creating a giant void grenade at the cost of a standard ship, why don't we use that as a tactic to wipe out entire fleets?
Would it not be more cost-effective to create many escort ships piloted by the legio cybernetica or servitors that exist for the sole purpose of sending terrors back to the warp? Even if we only used it against Tyranids, we could target the biggest ship in the fleet during an invasion and destroy the prime synapse creature, sending the Tyranid forces into a frenzy.

It wasn't Ultramarines but Navy Admiral. And it wasn't standard ship but Emperor Class Battleship, ship that Imperium can no longer produce, only repair damaged ones or extract them from space hulks.
It was one of most powerfull ships in Imperial Navy, this is why it even could get in tyranid formation.
Besides killing Norn Queen does fuck all because of Hydra effect, warp drive detonation destroyed most of behemoth fleet, not just killed Norn Queen.

It takes 7 years of studying to become a doctor. But combat medics irl sometimes train surgeons because their hands on experience with limbs blowing off are invaluable than simply reading about them on a book.

More like it's just correctly imitating the 80's mecha design that inspired those designs. Something that doesn't come up too often but Tyranids don't just adapt to enemy weapons, but plans as well, and have entire bioform lines set up to black bag enemy commanders, eat their brains and send all their knowledge back to the Hivemind.

It might work a few times, but it'd cost an incredible amount of resources and you'd risk the Tyranids just developing a counter to it.

Everyone has to do that. You can't use Warp travel safely within gravity wells, you translate at the Mandeville point and it takes days to fly in from the system's edge, this is canon for all factions except Necrons and Eldar using webway shenanigans.

It's all chambers of craftworld houses/families, where they lived in but since most of craftworld fucking died, it's now abandoned and populated by wraithguards. Name at the end is name of the house.

For every 5 models, 1 can be selected to have X. For PMs that means 1 in 5 can have a blight launcher, 1 in 5 a plague spewer, 1 in 5 from the special weapons list (melta, plasma) etc

They're independent allowances, you can't have 5 blight launchers for example but having a blight launcher doesn't impact you having any of the other choices

Same spectrum for hating the Eldar. While Eldar are disgusting on the game but punching bags on the fluff Chaos constantly get wanked to oblivion narratively, to the point it gets tiresome. Add in how a bunch of people buy into the wanking when it involves dudes being totally stronger than chaos and not corrupted despite living in the warp dealing with demons every day for 10K years straight.

My own chaos dudes are totally on the "I'm actually renegade and use Chaos pragmatically" camp, but at least I know they're just fucking delusional.

Chaos lore is terrible wank fest and in general it flanderizes the setting.
Also in general Chaos as a faction and from the lore perspective just embodies all the worst writing tropes known to fiction.
Mainly time travel and the god awful multiverse shit, since it is canon that the Warp and Chaos is shared between WHF, AoS and 40k. It's the same old thing in all 3 settings.
Also doesn't help that writers treat Chaos and the Warp as a "get out of jail free" card when it comes to writing if they ever write themselves into a corner. It's the whole "well it is Chaos and the Warp, it's supposed to be randumb xD, we can come up with whatever shit we want on the fly"

I'm fine with Chaos being involved in conflicts, but what I don't want to see is Chaos being shoved everyone's throats.
Imperium vs Chaos on Vigilus? Perfect, just fine.
Nachmund Gauntlet? Ok as well.
Pariah Nexus? No, stop. Fuck off.
Pariah Nexus is a good example since it was entirely fine and good as a conflict that was mainly Imperium vs Necrons because there needs to be more pure Imperium vs aliens conflicts. Chaos and Vashtorr were not needed to be added there.
Yeah, it'd be ok if it was some small thing, say like couple of minor chaos marine warbands exploiting the war between Imperium and Necrons for their benefit? Sure, that sounds good. But we don't need chaos as a major player.

bro you don't get it, they're old models so he can simultaneously flex for being a based fake grog who ebayed some old shit AND avoid any actual criticism since "they're the first minis I ever painted when I was 12 years old, they have sentimental value and I'm not going to repaint them dude (but just trust me I'm way better than you are, trust me my Golden Daemon just goes to another school, she lives in Canada actually you wouldn't have heard of it...)

I like the idea of non-chaos renegades, but given how niche and specialized anything Astartes-related it's pretty hard tk justify them managing to exist truly outside of any support structure (Imperial and Chaotic). Maybe some kind of Iron Hands sucessors or other technophiles with ties to one of the big de-facto autonomous Forge Worlds, doing sketchy shit forthem in exchange for material and Geneseed? But I doubt anything important enough to supply Astartes would be able to keep shit under wraps.

Either that or they're living off raiding imperial shipping that's going to chapters, but I doubt the Imperium would let that go on for any amount of time before cracking down hard.

Renegaes are a cool concept, but anyone truly independent can't expect to survive that way for any meaningful amount of time. Doesn't mean /yourdudes/ can't exist in that brief "rebelled but haven't ran out of supplies yet" time-frame.

Half the galaxy is completely cut off from the rest of the Imperium and as far as many people in the Great Rift are concerned the Imperium no longer exists; if anything this should be a golden age of renegades and miniature fiefdoms springing up to fill the void. Imagine if half the Holy Roman Empire suddenly lost all contact with the other half and couldn't even physically see over the border what was happening, let alone send a messenger?

The balkanization of Nihilus could be really cool but GW has barely touched it

It would be nice to have another opposing human faction along side the Leagues of Votann that’s been severed from the imperium itself.

I would say they could do a general renaissance theme, but admech seems to own that. Maybe a Islamic golden age theme?

The Tau are Greek, Indian, nato, and NATO mixed with a bit of Japan, brave new world and starship troopers. Also, they are the faction that utilizes the “indomitable (insert species here) spirit” theme the most. The Tau only uses machines, themselves, and their allies, and make little to no use of transhumans at all. They are the standard underdog human faction put through a alien paint job. The Tau are the brave newcomer species beating the odds and leading the galaxy to a new age. The Tau are the ones with indomitable spirits despite their near lack of presence in the warp. Their soldiers know even less than the imperial guard about the threats of the galaxy, and yet they still win.
