>take the can out of the water, quick wipe down to dry
>take minis and primer outside

>be sure to clear your primer nozzle (hold can upside down and spray until clear) before you go back inside

depending on how cold it is you can probably get a 5 man or 10 man squad done in each trip if you take your time, more if it isn't too windy.

First coat of primer (rattle can) on this guy. Any recommendations on brushes that hold their tip well? I've been using my girlfriend's old makeup brushes + some Kolinsky detail brushes.

I just turn on the extractor fan in the kitchen and leave the room for an hour or so after I spray.

I usually airbrushing lacquer paint at 20psi but i seen people saying the recommend psi for acrylic is 30?

30 would be for primers, depends on needle size and stuff.

But i sprayed lacquer primer at 20 psi too? What about normal acrylic paint? I have the 0.3 needle airbrush
>>

You're probably going to need to thin acrylic primer more for a 0.3 needle.

Yes. I know the manager at Warhammer Denton Town Crossing, the former manager of the Fort Worth (Hulen Mall Area) store, and a few of the ladz at the Citadel.

What country are you in? Here in Burgerland, almost all the stores have but a sole employee with maybe an on-call backup. The Citadel (and its West Coast counterpart) is an exception in that it has enough staff to rotate and stay open even when somebody calls in sick.

It's ... challenging to find good help these days. Plus, there are circumstances even the best laid plans just can't prepare you for.

The guys running the sole-employee stores are the equivalent of full-time managers. They get benefits such as medical insurance. It's enough to live on I suppose, but they aren't setting the world on fire. There's no way I could support my family on what those guys make.

Of the four such employees I have known personally, two are still at it, and one has moved on to become the guy GW sends around the country to open new stores. There's a new Warhammer store opening in Tyler, Texas, in about a week, and I imagine he'll be there.

The fourth guy's store (Colleyville) has been closed twice and AFAIK is currently shuttered... although it's my understanding that he has also accepted a different position within the company.

I think the general consensus on brushes is to just use a cheaper set and clean/condition them regularly with brush soap, replacing them after they get too bad to maintain. Opinions are pretty broad, though, depending on the day of the week you ask.
>>
>>94547272
>I think the general consensus on brushes is to just use a cheaper set
Only if you're starting out. After that I'd move on to Raphaels, Windsor and Newtons, Artis Opis, Da Vinci or whatever. The difference is very noticeable if you feel like you've hit a wall. I think if you're just painting to play, cheap synthetic is probably fine and there's definitely people out there that can push through it and get just as good with them as with expensive brushes.

I'm saying that your figure's chainmail loincloth is bad. As for brushes, synthetics from any regular arts supplier should be enough. Natural hair only starts to make a difference when you do ultra-small, ultra-defined things like faces.

No, but your part definition is poor because you’re not using a black line or detail wash.
Under that cold onto the blue for example has terrible definition because there’s no shadow defining the edge.

I'm realizing that this guy's shoulder won't match my transfer sheets - I should have painted it white, not silver. That being said I like the look of this, and I can't help but feel that matt white would look awful on the textured, sculpted pauldron. Any ideas? I was considering maybe a metallic white as a compromise, but it looks fairly good as is.

Beginning on bases, cork super glued to bases drying now. I'll come in and trim some more of the excess off to neaten up the bases, make cracks/potholes, and fill in some spots with texture paste. Going to make some cork rocks, sprue beams, and a few tufts to help break up the asphault, and the bases will get a thin coat of watered down pva to fill in some of the more "corky" texture.

how do you guys glue smal accesories to your minis? I tried to glue a relic to my space marine but the surface area is virually 0
>>
>>94551502
Not to sound cunty but if it doesn't fit I don't force it. I never put all of the gubbins that come with the boxes on the models, feels that it clutters a lot up way too much. Some things like ork vehicles are one thing, not everything needs to have every square millimeter with something to paint.

To answer the question, sprue goo if its plastic on plastic to give a little more "body" to hold the piece in place or you can use superglue and accelerator to instantly bond a piece. Good tweezers are a big help with tiny pieces.

Yeah I don't really understand all the accessories that come in sprues. I mean you can handwave it with sci-fi stuff saying it's mag-locked or whatever. But in fantasy, I just don't know where to put pouches and stuff. Usually models have a belt, but the parts never sit naturally.

If you don't use washes, do what you gotta do to bring it down a bit and get some shadows into the recesses. I'd be using the silver you used to highlight it.
>>
>>94551881
>White primer
I get people use it so they can use speed/contrast paints, but god I hate it and I hate painting over it. Makes everything look so blown out. Especially since it looks like you went for dark red and black as the main colours. You should be painting those over black or greay primer. Looks like a particularly crunchy one you used as well. I feel like black primers go on so much smoother, but that also could just be the difference between eyes and camera.

It went on pretty smooth. I've had horrible whites before but wraith bone is usually pretty good, and I like it as a base for the contrasts

Yeah that must just be camera or something then. Looks like completely different feet there. Looks smooth in this picture and rough in the first one. So almost definitely not visible to naked eye.

I have to learn to stop being anxious about ruining models and just keep making progress on them.I haven't painted anything in like 3 weeks. I've been assembling at least, but now I'm already worried about how I'm gonna paint these things.
>>

>ruining models
Like with paint? How do you ruin a model with paint? You can just paint over it. Shit's thin.
>>
>>94552746
I sometimes fall into that mindset too, but I just remind myself, if I truly fuck up I can just chuck it into some isopropyl alcohol and start over. Stakes really aren't as high as your mind makes them out to be.
>>
>>94552746
Trying to avoid failure is the biggest waste of time in life. No matter how much you prep you're gonna fuck up, and through fucking up learn to be better. Suck it up and get your reps in, iteration is the key to everything.

Another Beast Snagga done-ish (still need to base obviously). I really have to figure out a good edge highlight paint for the copper edges, but in the grand scheme of things that isn’t a huge deal and I can continue exploring.

Biggest lesson I am learning from this set is that I don’t have it in me to do batch painting at this level. I feel like I’m getting a better handle of the full set’s unique quirks (like ‘problem spots’ with common pouches, weapon angles, etc.) when I complete one unit at a time. I have six other units about 80% completed and some of the things I learned from this current guy I’m too late to apply to the others. Mind you, I don’t play the game nor show these things off so it’s purely for my own sake but I still like to put the effort in.

Looks really nice. If you're looking to spice up those pants, apply this video. I go back to this video all the time, it's my favourite way to paint leather.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9D3aa6HKZM

Sadly I don't have a good photo of when I first used it. Painted this for a friend and gave it to them without taking a well lit photo of the completed mini. I really like the technique of just slopping the paint on and then bring it all back together with glazes.

Anon, a wonderful gift and exactly what I was hoping for. Sorry for the delay in posting this, my wife was having an emergency caesarean as your gift was delivered and the postman helpfully yeeted it over the fence in the middle of a storm and didn't tell me it had been delivered so I didn't pick it up immediately (luckily all good!) then the last few days have been absorbed by lack of sleep and this shitting creature which now lives in my house. The finned beast sort of thing and the squirrel are my personal favourites, Bloodletters will be used for Frostgrave monsters and Silver Bayonet. Looking forward to getting stuck into it all! Also, a healthy dose of (still usable) smut. I did have to try and explain the anime figure to my wife though.

Eh, it more or less boils down to me preferring the style and proportions of larger scale figures but those also being significantly more difficult to paint and being very demanding, high time investment projects which is not great for a beginner, and aside from the price, not being that fond of heroic scale proportions or the tendency towards grotesque faces and exaggerated, cartoony features on most tabletop miniatures.

I want to make a castle wall next year and because it's my first terrain project should I try to find cheap foam or just do carboard?

A strip of something rigid for a base and a block of foam is the foundation you’ll probably want regardless of how you detail it.

>>
>>94556823
This would be for play, which is I'm leaning towards cardboard so I don't have to feel bad because I can get it for free

Rigidity is a good point because this would probably be around 4 feet and even in pieces if I go too high it might give

So this would be castle wall so it would go higher than that. What's a good deal for insulation foam? Amazon has it for $30 a sheet but if there is a source for less then I'd obviously prefer that

Builders merchant. Or a skip where they’re redecorating a house. Should get a board (1msquarish) for under £10.
“Insulation board” they come in different density, like polystyrene up to nearly fiber glass. Fiber ones cut like ass with hot wire so be warned.
Card struggles with any weight or moisture so make sure you reinforce it and rest it with consideration.
Maybe look into dolls house making if you’re making a castle.

Oh, ok. To make tufts get a piece of tape or something glue will peel off. Put dots of pva, put a little pinch of grass in, let it dry.

A static applicator helps a lot but you can make do without if you don’t just mush the grass down, because what sells the look is not seeing both ends of the fibre.

You can mix in other fibres without shelling out, I use hemp string cut up into tiny bits to make dead grass.

And then like I said before, less is more break it up so it doesn’t look boring. Plan your main details and then fill in some space to balance the composition.

it's been a while since I've done it but if I remember correctly
>shake them like crazy, vortex mixer helps

Duncan has a video about this you can see what I mean by a stainless steel cone

Dozens, guess where I live. Ironically not a mecca of GW gaming at all, Warlord loom much larger in terms of the local scene.
Anyhow, if you mean how they are in retail, its because they are taught to sell that way and the culture around that is very strong. Partly "the persona" is a function of how you hard sell when your audience are autists and children. They remind me a bit of a cross between a children's TV presenter and religious people looking for converts and that probably isn't far off the mark. And its in part the kind of people they get for whom working for GW is like getting asked to play guitar for the Rolling Stones or something. I think they exploit that a lot frankly. You shouldn't hate them though, you don't have randoms coming in off the street to talk Dark Angel lore at you for 90 minutes on on a Tuesday morning whether you are trying to stock take (or saw your own head off) or not.
That said, if there is any GW personality you do like, nearly all of them started in retail and were that guy. So it does wear off.

Not that it's the best starting starting point, but kimera is the obvious best answer. Inks might be a better option for beginning.
The only problem with citadel and even other hobby paints and mixing, is that to up/down saturation as well as coverage they add black or white pigments to the paints, so it just adds another unnecessary level of mental overhead when figuring out what you should mix with what you want to get.
You could still do it with citadel though, just pick the most highly saturated paints in the base set you want, like CYM, or even just do them and the other main colors in the color wheel to simplify your starting positions. They would probably end up being mostly from the layer line and you might have to add black/white to adjust coverage.

Big Child Creative's Atom Spartpaints are good for paint mixing. There isn't a big range so you need to mix. And they behave predictably. Unfortunately they aren't for sale right now for some reason. I got them this last spring from Spray Gunner. I don't know why it's difficult now.
>>
>>94559376
>I remember reading that citadel paints
Really? What was the issue? I mix paints all the time now and I mainly still have all the Citadel pots from when I started. It's just colour, you take a colour and mix in a different colour that you think will create the colour you want. For example I don't like Citadel flesh tones, so I mix Khorne red into them to get a bit of pinkness in the mix. Or for an earthy purple for skin shadows on dark brown skin, I took some Naggaroth Purple and mixed in some warboss green or whatever it's called. You just eyeball it and mix.

It's something my brush started doing recently that no amount of taking apart and cleaning has fixed. I don't know what to call it other than sputtering. Like it's not a continuous stream it goes like a stereotypical sprinkler. But it only happens sometimes so I don't know what causes it. It's pretty unnoticeable in real life, but the camera really accenuates it.

Maybe not hours, but I've soaked it in a pill bottle of IPA while I fully disassemble and clean out the rest of the brush. Sometimes, it will sputter right away, and then I'll rinse out the cup with IPA, and it'll be fine again. Other times, I'll go an entire painting session with no problems at all. I don't feel like I'm doing anything different. Im making sure I use lots of thinner and flow improver, I have the right consistency, I make sure I rinse the cup and clear the line every few minutes or so, I always clean it out and disassemble it when I'm done etc.

Maybe I should just buy an Eclipse.

>>
>>94560031
I have an eclipse and that would happen to me until I learned more about cleaning and clogs. Beyond thinner going in first what really helped me was
>Never empty the cup by spraying. Always tip it out
>Get a squeeze bottle and use a mixture of mostly water and a bit of airbrush cleaner to rinse and back spray until clear
>After priming, always soak the nozzle for a few hours in IPA and clean with a tool
Soaking is never enough. I find it best if I push the tool through the nozzle and twist onto a paper towel. The remaining moisture flows into the towel and helps you see if there's any paint coming out. Your needle might be bent as well I guess. Could take a close look at that. Might want to look up a guide to check that your brush is airtight as well. Maybe there's a seal loose and air is getting out. So many potential problems.

Do you know what a blister pack is? It has pretty much the perfect thin plastic to make into a circle and tape to a base to make those water effect bases. The water resin stuff doesn't stick to it, well it does but you can peel it off pretty easy. It works with most water effects you'd find at railroad, miniature and hobby shops. If you're using some other brand make a test base to work out the bugs. Tape was a dumb idea fyi. you can't even make that into a decent circle.

I have never had poured resin or epoxy stick to tape when using it as a mask. Maybe that electrical? tape is the fault? Get some washi tape/tamiya masking tape/painters masking tape/scotch tape and run some more tests.
>>
>>94560318
White is fucked, it needs to be incredibly thin. Just give up on normal acrylics and zenithal and use Tamiya flat white thinned 5:1 thinner:paint and go light on the psi
>>
>>94560190
You mean clear plastic? I'm not sure where I could easily buy large amounts of it. But how to seal it in removable manner to prevent leaking?
>>
>>94560319
Already tried using various masking tapes before - gel would leak between, detach the tape from base and make whole gel flow around. Electrical isolation tape was the first where this didn't happen.
>>
>>94560347
Alrighty I'll keep that in mind, I was going to try the pro acryl white but it's probably thicker than the one I used so I'd have to thin the fuck outta it. I'll pick up that tamiya white next time I'm at my lgs

It's not that Citadel paints are inherently bad for mixing, it's that some paints are already mixed with something that could have unwanted effects. To avoid this, you want to use single pigment paints like Kimera or the artist stuff. Here's a neat trick: if you mix two colors on the opposite side of the color wheel, they will neutralize into a brownish-gray color. If you notice hobby paints looking muddy when mixed, they might have pigments that are neutralizing each other.
>>
>>94560921
They're purchased cast resin models, not printed.
>>

>I'm not sure where I could easily buy large amounts of it.
It's that thin transparent plastic commonly used for packaging. You're very likely to have some in your bin right now. No need to buy.

Also mdf has like a paper layer surface, score it with a knife in a criss-cross so you’re actually gluing into the fibers and not to the surface layer.

As others have said, plastic packaging is ideal for dams but whatever you use you should put a release agent. Just use your skin grease like artisans do.

Santa here,
before sending out the usual reminders for slowpokes i thought it would be nice to have a little info post. Its 2 weeks until christmas eve, and 60% of all participants have forwarded me their tracking number by now.

Interestingly enough, and maybe caused by their post strikes, no canadian has sent me a tracking number so far.

If you have not yet shipped your parcel, you will get a reminder email from me within the next 1-2 days.
If you haven't got an email with a tracking number from me yet, then no need to ask for it at this point. I usually forward the tracking numbers i get within a few hours at most.

If shipped this week, its still enough days left for any shipment to reach its destination in time i'd say

Have a nice holiday season everyone, and keep those pictures of gifts coming. Without pictures it is just half the fun for everyone.

The paint that was near the needle and nozzle was thicker when it got down there is all. Once you get used to airbrushing you'll have a better handle on how to thin your paints from the get go. Just make sure you're putting a few drops of thinner in the cup before any paint, helps keep fresh paint from getting right into the nozzle and drying. Mixing in a container then pouring into the airbrush cup is the foolproof method, but mixing in the cup is fine too, work a brush around to break up the big globs of paint then blowback mix. Proacryl airbrushes a little bit funky, it sprays like a dream but its going to look too thick in the airbrush cup due to its gel consistency. A couple other tips, is usually better to mix smaller batches of paint (3 - 5 models or so) and do a water rinse between them than to try and mix enough paint all at once. The longer the paint is in the cup the greater chance something will dry along the top of the cup or on the sides, slide down and clog the brush. The quick water rinse and mixing more paint is a lot faster than a full disassemble and clean to get a clog. If you still get dry tip and clogging issues Uncle Vince's thinner mix was a big help for me, 80:20 or 70:30 thinner to flow improver. A bit help when I moved to a drier climate and solved my dry tip issue for me.

Use a silicone mold, or plastic sheet as a wrap. Maybe try a thick layer of PVA glue or mod podge over the sand first since it looks like your resin didn't adhere well to it.
