Writing a card is too much work... It's difficult for me to write sentimentality in a way that comes off as sincere and not cloying and gauche...
>>
>>94562226
I find that it's easier to write my message in a text program (Notepad/Wordpad/Outlook, etc.), then come back to it and look it over a couple of times before transcribing it into the card. This gives me a chance to revise what's eventually going to become permanent in ink and, as an added bonus, reduces the likelihood that I'm going to botch the card.

I attach the artwork to the front of the card with rubber cement only *after* I have finished writing on the inside anyway.
>>
>>94562226
I shouldn't be surprised in this place but man if you overthink such a distanced social situation as a christmas card you must have debilitating social anciety irl.

One off mini anon, preferably from a game you don't play, a faction you don't play, or a third party mini. Only condition is that you think it looks fucking cool. Go in with no stress or "obligations" to make it match with an army or existing scheme, just paint it because it looks like fun.

If that's not a rhetorical question, I can tell you that GW holds onto the injection molds forever, and there are warehouses with stacks of models that we all think are OOP.

I bet you if you drive out to the grand opening of the new Warhammer store in Tyler, Texas, this weekend, they'll have The Steel Rook, The Hunter Strikes, and possibly even older models like Inquisitor Erasmus Cartavolnus, Larissa Shadowstalker and the Primaris Company Champion.

Please excused how absolutely fucked this looks, but I'm looking for opinions about how proportional the arm on the right looks pre-greenstuff. I like the shoulder curtains on cataphractii terminators but the arms just won't do on the new terminator captain. Therefore I decided to try my hand at knifework. Putting aside how rough it is at the moment, does it look to be the right size?
I've also realized that I can dip into the beakie sprues to give my guy lightning claws that mount on top of the power fist.

Okay, found some of this flexible, transparent plastic you guys told me about, had some problems with fixing it in place and securing it as tight as I could, applied tape around it to make sure it won't leak and of course, it leaked, all the content.

I'm surprised I'm even still alive with that potential for failure - everything and I mean everything I do goes to shit, everytime.
>>

If i would buy a print and it came on cured supports i would leave the seller a negative review for sure and would not buy there again.
But then, i own a printer, so i know that this should be a no-go.
If i did not have a printer and only very little knowledge, i might think this is normal?

You can seal the bottom with hot glue or mod podge to prevent leakage. You can also brush some more mod podge/resin on the seam mark you're going to have where the plastic wraps over itself.
>>
>>94562669
>a hobby I do for fun
NTA, but I do the building and modeling for fun. I play the associated game(s) for fun. I've been painting since ~2014 and I have never once found it fun. Most of the time I find it deeply unpleasant. But I do find it an obligation out of basic respect for the other player(s), and I want to have my models finished and not just grey/black.
Motivation to do something you hate is hard to come by.
>>
>>94563651
What is this "mod podge"?
>>
>>94563506
>You really never know.
It's a special case, 'cause it's the flagship store and really close to the company office, but at the Warhammer Citadel Store & Cafe (Grapevine, Texas) birthday celebration this year, they had:

The Steel Rook
The Hunter Strikes
Inquisitor Erasmus Cartavolnus
Beyard's Revenge
Primaris Company Champion
Primaris Lieutenant (Commemorative Storm Shield/Power Sword version)
Kahl Yoht Grendok
Kamoteph the Crooked
Torrk Lennsen, Admiral of the First Fleet
Larissa Shadowstalker

... and a few others I was not even remotely interested in. There were *stacks* of models in the Commemorative Series boxes covering the front table... probably 800-1,000 individual models.

They market it as a "sealer", but basically, it's a translucent acrylic paste. There are several different versions depending on what kind of finish you're after. It's cheap and effective for what it's meant for, but I'd imagine you'd see more use over on /cgl/ than WIP, unless we're talking about making terrain.

Yay, glad you like it.

The recast thing isn't anything special other than you need to use super glue, not plastic glue because it's made of resin.
Hopefully once it's assembled you'll know what it is because I was stumped

Merry Christmas!

can i use normal clear 2 component resin for making puddels on painted bases? I allready have the resin at home and dont want to buy a hobby labeled one when i dont have to
>>
>>94563497
>i might think this is normal?
Probably, mainly because people are used to sprues. Problem is the cured supports are incredible annoying to remove and break small parts easily.
But like you said, you only know this when you do this yourself.
>>
>>94562883
The guys I buy from clean off almost all of the supports. I was surprised because the website says stuff like "supports included" but I guess they just mean the hard to reach ones that would take too long to clean up and still be profitable. The things are almost ready to prime out of the bag. Great quality as well, the only problem I had with them was the resin is really brittle and spikey bits just snap off.

I want to make a tutorial series that goes over lesser discussed tips and warnings in mini painting/modeling. How is this list so far?
>how to actually improve your paint skills and learn from your mistakes
>alternatives to eavy metal (volumetrics focused, realistic style with chipping and glaze techniques, a scathing critique of slapchop because it's garbage, comic book/cel-shaded style)
>equivalent paints, why the internet guides on equivalent paints are 90% wrong, and how to get the many not-quite matches to blend with each other better
>How to subassemble models properly so that you don't do every single one of your dudes piece by piece
>optimizing your workflow so you don't spend a month getting only one model done

>>
>>94564720
>how to actually improve your paint skills and learn from your mistakes
This is impossible. I don't believe you.
>>
>>94564798
Fair point lol, I think I just want the opportunity to dissuade people from thinking EM is the only valid way to paint and to shit on slapchop. Maybe I could retool that one into moreso finding a style that you'll feel invested in and get good results out of over buying into whatever techniques ecelebs recommend.
>>
>>94563426
You have the plastic overlapping too, that's bad, try to cut it so the ends meet, USE A STRAIGHT EDGE, if you have trouble making the circle, press the plastic strip tightly against a table edge and pull down, it should start to curl after a couple times, then tape the ends and glue it to the base with hot glue or wood glue if thats all you have, you want to get the glue more on the outside than the inside, so just glue it down with a bit and seal the outside with more. If you'r eworried about spillage do the pour inside a plastic lid like from a peanut butter jar.

>>
>>94565504
Very cool, looking a bit chunky though. Might need to work on thinning your paints or getting better coverage with single layers.
>>
>>94565543
I still struggle with this. I swear they're thinned but stuff like white will always go on awful
>>
>>94565654
White is classically a shit paint. Especially Citadel whites if you're using those. Painting white is also about priming correctly. If you're going to paint white onto parts of your miniature, you might be better of doing sub assemblies and priming those parts white. You just can't paint white onto something primed black and sometimes even grey.

If you're having problems with coverage where it's like
>Good coverage but paint is too thick
>Thinned paint but now coverage is awful and it just flows off
I've realised recently a lot of that is about loading your brush. I've been underloading my brush when I want to paint thin and what's happening is the water stored into the belly of the brush is flowing down when the brush makes contact with the model and thinning the paint even more. You still need to have a healthy amount of paint on there and do a few test strokes on your hand or palette to see how it comes off.
>>
>>94565379
>>94565391
You did forget backpacks, but that’s ok, I have plenty of leftover backpacks of all sorts in my bits box,I’ll manage! Looking forward to painting them, now I just have to choose colors and theme.

I painted models for the first time* today ("First time", technically I painted some DnD minis a few times like 12 years ago with friends but that was really it.)
It went ok, I went in with low expectations skill wise. I am unsatisfied with my current skill level but I 100% expected that and am not dissuaded by it, I knew there would be a long journey to improve and I want to.
I used Vallejo Express paints and I think I was using them wrong? I did two coats and tried to soak where the paint pooled and didn't brush it around after the first application but it still came out uneven and with the Templar White the primer spots still showed through in some parts. The other colors I used for this session were their newer Black contrast and Mahogany Brown for the wooden parts such as bows or arrow stems and they also applied unevenly(or rather I applied them unevenly.)
Should I just base coat with regular paints first and then apply contrast? Was my priming the issue? Did I just not have enough paint on the brush? Any advice or input is appreciated.
>>
>>94565882
As someone else who also painted their first model recently, the test paints I did with spoons also confirmed that contrast paints are weird and can turn out uneven. They were primed with rustoleum and I haven't had the chance to try with a hobby primer. To start out it's usually recommended to use regular acrylics to learn how to actually paint, and then you can come back to contrasts later. After I get through my Blood Angels I will need to figure out how I want to pull of my Alpha Legion, either with AP speedpaints or Ink mixes in speedpaint medium.

Usually, when I use crackle paint (mordant earth mostly) I get better results by going over it with a heat gun for a moment or two. Hoping it dosnt fuck up the astrogranite i put down. My advice is drop contrast/speed paints completely. Get normal acrylic paints for minis and learn how to paint normally first. People keep trying to learn using contrast first, but you are only going to understand how they work and how to use them after you've painted for a bit.

Also post the model so we can see where you went wrong. To make you feel more comfortable, here is my first model that I painted like 5 years ago. It's a bit dusty from sitting in a box. Everyone should post their first model.

I know this feeling. I also have pretty much the perfect set up for painting now where I can just sit down and start painting. It really does help with motivation. The days of needing 15 mins of prep work and cleaning up to paint at my computer desk are gone and not missed.

Forgive poor picture quality or lighting, the idea for this guy's unit was having their garments be a quartered pattern of white and blue and then brown for anything under, which is why the bottom right and top left (from viewers PoV) are painted with Templar white. I intended to paint the blue and skin and other features first coats tomorrow but with my mixed results I think I will do a basecoat with regular paint brown, white, and black and then go from there (painting the white portion last.)
>>
Is there a chart for contrast paints to clean up and highlight it, or do you just add a bone/pale sand to the contrast paint, mix it, and hope for the best?
>>
>>94566177
Hard to say but honestly looks fine to me if you were using contrast paints. They basically just add a thin colour over the top of the base/prime and pool in the recesses to add shadow. And it looks like that's what's happened there. They are just an easy way to get depth and variety by only using one paint. It's always going to look low effort compared to adding those layers in manually with regular paints by layering and glazing, but if you just want to get the mini on the table, they are good for that. If you really want to learn how to paint though, definitely put them to the side for a bit and try and learn how to do it the hard way first so you can better understand what sort of effect they are replicating. But yeah you seem to be doing fine so far.

That looks way too thick. Hard to tell if it's the mini though. I half painted a battletech mini like a year ago that I never got to show off. I should finish it, but it's just covered in dust that won't come off now. All that was left was to do some yellow stripes and markings and paint the cockpit. But yeah aim for a thinner consistency. You want as much detail as you can to remain on the mech. When you do that, you can pick out all those little details and paint them.

>>94566177
Looks fine, like >>94566235 said contrast paints and the like are a good way to bring out shadows and volumes but you'll only know how to actually do that intentionally once you get an understanding of how paints work normally. Contrast paints being their own thing have a different learning curve and different effects they can achieve compared to acrylics which is where the difficulty comes from but as far as just putting color on primer it still works.
>>
>>94566310

Don't worry about it. I've been at this like 6 or 7 years and there's been some ups and some downs. It's 4chan, everyone goes into this with the understanding that there's a huge spectrum of weird ass people here with different tastes and different ideas of "acceptable" presents. If we wanted something super reliable and regulated, we'd do some plebbit SS instead. Getting a bunch of big tiddy lizard models to laugh about with my friends means more to me than a brand new box of whatever to add to my backlog. You sent a box with what you felt would bring someone joy, if they don't appreciate that, fuck 'em, we can all roll the dice again next year anyhow. Personally, my fingers are crossed for that dried lizard. worst case scenario I divvy up my unwanted present with the guys at my local shop.

In a weird sense the magic of SS is laundering funds I wouldn't have spent on my friends into models I'm totally willing to share with my friends. Isn't that what Christmas is all about?

You aren't really working off a great start, so I can't blame you. You're going to probably spend as much time scraping, sanding, and cleaning those 3d prints as you are painting if you want good results. From the looks of it, you're working on either a scan of an official model auto supported, or an in-game model posed and printed as one piece. A good creator would either support it better as one piece, or split the model into a few pieces and require a little assembly.
But definitely thin your paint, and apply multiple coats

I don't *think* so, but it's possible.

I wasn't the first person in line, and it was obvious that they had more limited numbers of some models than others, so if she were there, somebody else must've grabbed up the last one before I got to the "Commemorative Edition" table. To the anon that gavee airbrush troubleshooting advice yesterday: Thank you. I left a bunch of pieces soaking in IPA while I blocked out colors today and a lot more gunk than I expected came out. I haven't tried it yet, but fingers crossed it's good to go.
>>
>>94566762
No worries, I was suffering in your shoes until people here gave me the same advice. A combination of that and Vince's videos on cleaning your airbrush and priming with your airbrush really helped me. Basically keep it moist, never let the last bit of paint go through the nozzle, clean often and after priming, always run IPA through it and soak it in IPA then needle out the bits. It was always the same pattern with me. Prime day everything is good. Zenithal time the next day, white sputters and splatters all over the place until the paint stops completely. And it was always those little bits of dry primer acting like pearls for the white paint to build up around. After deep cleaning a bunch of white out of there, there would always be a couple of little specks of dried black primer that came out.
>>
>>94566762
When I lacquers for the first time after using acrylics in my airbrush for a year or two after settling into a pretty steady routine without clogging issues. The first time I put lacquer thinner through it so much shit came out instantly despite me thinking it was clean and working well.
My point is if you can get a can of lacquer thinner from the hardware store it will eat through any acrylic left in the brush in a heartbeat.

Question conpletely unrelated to my own fuckups and regretting decisions, how do you remove weathering from a model without ruining it?
>>
>>94567689
Depends on what you've used for the weathering I guess. If you used some enamel washes you can try to clean it up with white spirit. If it's something like sponged acrylics or hand painted scratches you either have to paint over those or strip the mini and start from scratch
>>
>>94567689
Might be too late depending on what you're trying to remove and how much.
In future though, it's a common scale modelling technique to use clearcoats to act as sort of checkpoints between stages. Something like
>prime
>paint
>gloss coat
>decals + weathering
>matte coat

especially if you're doing spray or lacquer varnish coats, it'll hold up to a lot more and let you remove the subsequent paint with light scraping or solvents since it's so much harder than the acrylic.
I can't actually remember, back when I did more scale modelling there were pretty advanced sequences of layers of products that wouldn't fuck with each other you would do in certain orders to do whatever.

Worst comes to worse just paint over it and try and blend it all in as good as possible. You might not need to paint over all of it, I'm sure you still want SOME weathering.

id like to paint it all a green hue like its “necromantic magic” but im not sure which way the gradient should go.

tldr: should i paint the smoke light to dark green, or dark to light green? should the demon face be more “ethereal” (light green) or more “physically manifested” (dark green)

Or even things like a fast foward montage of how different types of paint try like Glazes versus thick coats, more visualization tools for noobs to get a better grounding.

It varies so much by brand, climate, what type of brush you use, etc. I've taught a couple new people and I always say to just have a test model with you to try the paint/wash/glaze on first, after a couple minis you should have an idea how a properly thinned paint should look on your palette to you and from there its just practice to dial in consistency.
>>
>>94562490
A very powerful tip for productivity is to keep it present in your mind and to erase every barrier of inconvenience between you and the task.
In this case this would mean having everything in position to paint, the mini in place the paints and table all set.
The second half would be having a pot of paint or a brush or even the mini itself on your desk with you in your field of view, as a constant reminder to your mind that it is ready to be done.
Motivation and willpower are a finite resource in our mind, other sources of gravity towards your goals are powerful ways to get more done.

Still trying to do that water effect and I found some more flexible plastic (from that protective cover for schoolbooks) but I still can't properly mount it, it keeps slipping out and leave holes anyway. Also tried Tamiya masking tape I still had but it leaked too, not right away but after few minutes (tested with empty base and with just water since Vallejo still water gel is similar in consistency).

Sorry for wasting your advices but I guess I have to give up.

I'm afraid I will have to give up

Forgot to mention that I also have AK gel which is appears white and thick at first but dries into transparent form after 12-24h. It seems to be less "runny" but there is still a problem of forming "walls" around base, especially when it have direction markings at side. Maybe I could form "walls" out of it first and fill with Vallejo one later but no idea if different gels won't create odd effects at connection.
>>
>>94571217
>>94571106
Can you give me the rundown on what you've done so far and what you're trying to accomplish?
>>
>>94571319
I'm trying to get partially submerged bases effect. So far I tried:
- flexible, transparent plastic from packing - it maintained desired round shape around base but couldn't properly seal it with tape and gel leaked over time (all tries are done within plastic unused containers so no damage was actually done to desk and such)
- Tamiya and "normal" painting masking tape - in each case they would soaked and detach from base, spilling gel around
- electric isolation tape - only one to actually prevent leaking but couldn't maintain shape and it glued firmly to gel itself so while removing, it took whole solidified gel with it

People here suggested sealing with PVA glue or similar but I have by doubts since it is water soluble, need some time to dry first and I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to safely remove it from base itself after gluing.

Not quite sure where else to ask but I recently bought some models that were wrapped in some kind of heavy duty saran wrap in thin strips to keep them safe.

>>
>>94572403
I'm in the same boat rn. As far as I've been able to gather, all those spray stations are basically the same chinesium and you should just buy the cheapest one available to you (if you buy one at all). Personally, I'm leaning more towards just wearing a mask and not stressing too much. 3m p95 disposable half masks are like 25 american duckets each, and should last quite a while on this use case. You're basically supposed to use them until they're either obviously gaining drag or visibly dirty. Boomers will say keeping it in a ziplock will make it last longer, but honestly I'm pretty sure that only matters for filters with a reactive component like carbon or whatever the fuck.
>>
>>94573052
>3m p95 disposable half masks
Just get a respirator. i have one, pretty sure it's mostly useless because I have a beard though. I do a seal check each time, but I dunno how much it's helping. I joke, but you honestly don't want to fuck with particles in the air like this. There's a reason this stuff is regulated so heavily in industries and there are specific tribunals for dealing with dust disease industrial cases. It's something that will just hit you 10 years from now when you suddenly can't breath. I open a window and use a respirator, but I really need a spray booth. If the hose can't go out a window, you can convert a bucket into a fume catcher. Saw a video for that on youtube.

If it's dry and sunny out, it should still be fine. You can go out, spray, and bring them back inside if you're ok with the smell and you have somewhere to put them that's not near family or pets. Alternatively, people forget that you can brush on primer. I do it all the time for stuff I missed or bits I need to fix or a mini that I need to quickly add to a warband or whatever. Just buy an airbrush primer and use an old big brush and slop it on. Alternatively alternatively, looks like you're in a garage, which means you have space, so get yourself an airbrush set up.

Honestly, I probably will eventually, but if I'm airbrushing maybe a few hours a week, a janky disposable should last months. It seems easier to just get the disposable for now and maybe figure out a respirator once it wears out.

Definitely necessary if you want to move on to anything out of airbrushing acrylics. Acrylics are non-toxic but you need to worry about the particles getting in your lungs. Other paints have that but also will just kill your braincells from fumes.

Start dark, go light. That's always the easiest method. If you want white, you don't start at white. You start at grey. With pelts you can do a brown wash over them as well and then drybrush back in grey and then a bit of white over the top. Same deal with armour. Start a darker grey and then work up to silver.
>>
Anyone got any recommendations for a grey primer? I tried using the AK grey but found it to be too light, also thought it was pretty shit too
>>
>>94574658
Mechanicus standard grey is good but expensive. Probably can get away with whatever army painter is calling their grey now for half the cost
>>
>>94574721
That's what I've been using but recently got an airbrush and needed something similar to it in colour. Was going to try the vallejo one at some point as it's much darker than the AK grey but I've only problems with it so far
>>
>>94574656
Well, I primed him in grey, but only really did corax white with seraphim sepia on the fuzzy parts. Just watched an old Duncan video and he went from zandri dust ->screaming skull ->seraphim sepia ->white drybrush. Maybe I'll give that a shot.

Not sure what to do with the armor besides lead belcher to a slightly brighter metal then drybrush silver. Is there a wash that's going to work with that and not end up looking messy?

I guess a part of what makes high elves suck to paint is that they're supposed to be clean and pristine, but that kind of result is tricky to get unless you really know what you're doing

Yeah, I've never tried to highlight white cloth before. I started an elven referee for BB but only ever got around to base coating him with some light grey. Been doing plenty of pelts though. You can do a lot of stuff with them starting at grey and moving up and adding in greys and browns before a final light drybrush of white.

The metal though, yeah just start with leadbelcher, nuln oil wash and then go over the raised areas with a steel colour like ironbreaker and then do the edges with a little bit of silver.

>Which one do you think's gonna win the printing race? Resin or FDM?
Will FDM get "nanometer layers" (aka perfecting details and practically printing non-discernible to the human eye layers)
Or will resin actually be "consumer friendly" and print without giving the user 6 types of cancer and being an absolute expensive fucking bitch to handle?
>>
>>94573086
If you're really going to prime by spraycan in the winter remember
>shake well for 1-3 minutes
>put the can about 1/2 - 3/4of its length in warm (not hot) water
>after five minutes shake it again and start priming
This is to keep the spray from screwing up because of the cold.

All of these have a fundamental design flaw in that the filter is too large which means the air speed is very low and doesn't really capture the spray that bounces off the filter when you're spraying.

This is a much better design, with a bigger fan than the wimpy 120mm computer fans in those spray booths.

Resin is already consumer friendly and also wins by speed.
If (!) fdm would be able to print at such tiny layers while also being reasonable affordable (like 2-300 at most for a printer, similar to the mars 4/5 for example) then it still would loose massively in terms of speed. How do you stop inks from bleeding into varnishes? Every time I use inks they end up getting all smudgy and smeary. Do you just have to dust it on really lightly first to create a protective layer between the varnish coat and the underlying paint?

I'm not sure what you mean by bleeding. If they're going smeary when varnishing after inks, either the varnish isn't a good fit for the inks or the inks haven't fully dried. If it's the other way around, it's probably just the matte varnish being too matte, so try satin.
>>
>>94576462
I mean that the varnish's solvent is messing with the underlying paint film causing the ink to seep into the varnish.

Try a different varnish or even just acrylic medium that you can varnish on top of afterwards if you need to. Most ink ranges have their own acrylic medium that shouldn't give you any issues.

Anons, how are you SS gifts doing? Any Canada anon's gift got stuck because of the strike? What are you planning to do?
Mine has been stuck for a month and I'm not sure what to do now, send a subpar alternative or wait for the original. I don't want my anon to go without a gift but at the same time I don't want to give a non ideal one. Especially not what he asked for, as vague as it was.

I'm always optimistic, but sometimes you have to give things a nudge in the right direction. Postal workers are only human, after all.

My sender's gift is supposed to arrive here today.
The gift that I sent to my match is still "in transit" according to USPS.
A part of the other gift I ordered for someone else looks like it went to the wrong USPS facility. I think his will be late this year, but I'm not giving up!

1. Make sure you watch BoxmanBuilds. 2. Personally I wouldn't imitate his ball busting deck masking regimen, just paint the deck and paint the parts you attach to it.
3. Avoid anything with PE unless you want to go insane.

I use either the dark grey or black proacryl primers, used to use vallejo but it liked to gum up the airbrush quite a bit. Trick with them is to use as little thinner as you can, just enough to get them to spray smooth, usually 2:1 or 2.5:1 paint to thinner mix (80:20 thinner to flow improver) for me.

So, I used that AK clear gel instead, it ended like this. I wonder if it is good idea to us esome contrast blue paint over it now or simply leave it like this. Apparently gel don't need any walls but obviously won't form self-leveling volume. Unless I'm supposed to do it in layers.

I don't find Waterline the end of the world personally (don't tell Boxman that obv), at least you can store than when they are built. I recently did the Tamiya 1/700 Shimakaze and quite enjoyed it FWIW. Its not too much to take on, goes together well and cheap.
