crunch is specifically the part of the rulebooks that concerns stats, descriptions of a gun's workings are fluff, so yes, canon, but most dark eldar weapons shoot shards of crystallised poisons, I don't know what weapon you're referring to.

Only once, back in 9th.
It was the first game I ever played. I didn't fully understand Deep Strike rules and my opponent dropped a squad of Blightlords and a squad of Deathshrouds almost directly into my front line first turn before my turn even started.

Dumb question, anons. Are the helmet sizes the same fit throughout the lines of space marines? Can I put some HH helmets on a primaris for example, or will it look out of place in shape.
>>
Is a Ballistus Dreadnought that much of a downgrade from a Redemptor Dreadnought? I could fit a Redemptor on my 1000 point list if I bring 5 less Assault Intercessors, and I refuse to bring a tank instead, because I don’t like vehicles.

Is there any lore about what the Tau think of teleportation technologies? People talk about absence of psykers and FTL all the time, but teleportation never seem to be included in the discussion nor it is ever considered a big deal by anyone.

>>
>>94679386
Yeah they're all pretty close, you can swap just about every marine helmet available rn around and noone will notice any size differences
>>
>>94679388
The reason the Redemptor costs what it does is that it has the damage reduction; other than that, it's used because it's a jack of all trades; it can shoot ok and fight ok. The ballistics is too specialized and I would ALMOST take a Castraferrum over it (if I played Primaris that is, since I don't only run boxnaughts) because it can have basically the same gun as a ballistus and still have a power fist, and has the aura for only five points more, but it's much more fragile at the tradeoff of never bracketing.

>>
>>94679486
I think you're slightly above 2k.

You can try the following -
Drop the Redemptor and Drop Pod
Add an Impulsor to replace the Drop Pod
Upgrade the Land Raider to a Redeemer

This leaves you with 155 points left over - which means you can get a Predator of either stripe, or a Ballistus Dread for 130 Then maybe drop Iron Resolve for The Imperium's Sword to get a nice round 2k.

The Blaster/Dark Lance fire tiny amounts of anti-matter/dark-matter harvested from dying stars/black holes (dead stars).
So their standard weapons do involve star derived chunks.
Also they have lore-only weapons that involve teleporting stars to people, or teleporting people into stars, or even teleporting away stars. But these can sometimes be better described as 'traps'.

Hypno indoctrinated hive city youths who are selected for genetic compatibility are the most likely source for a first run of marine chapter members. The actual officer corps typically comes from whatever chapter the geneseed being used is from but that’s not always the case. The geneseed is usually already excess stock in storage or a particular kind chosen by the High Lords and replicated with servitor cloning under a Magos biologis. It takes around a 100 years to make a thousand marines worth of primarch goo that way.

Maybe the story hook could be that you are leading the scout company, you are isolated and must defend wherever you are, so that justifies the gameplay feature of leveling up marines from the bottom up.

We don't use that language here, please apologize and then delete your post.

If I painted my bases with a lightning pattern would that count as basing?
I've tried several things for my Necrons and I hated every single one of them, I'd rather paint that than slapping more texture paint.

I mean dawn of war 1, has the ultimate mod or whatever it’s called that has settings that allow you to survive waves of enemies like a tower defense, you can even have squads level up. It’s fun.
>>
>>94680864
Yeah, but I really want someone to just take the xcom formula and apply it to the marines, so you can have a bunch of strike squads you become attached to and customise, upgrade and level up alongside having a tech tree that would basically be just recovering access to the chapter armoury little by little.
You could also have multiple enemy factions to make it interesting, some allies from other imperial factions as a bonus.

Not kitbashing. Basing is adding shit to the base of the model. Sometimes it looks OK, but most of the time it looks bad and is usually contradictory to the game being played. People like to put desert, snow, grass etc on the base. Now imagine you're playing a Boatding Action game where you are either invading or defending a spaceship. Why the fuck is there a tiny forest following your guys around in a spaceship? The only time it doesn't look bad is when it matches the lore of the model and still fits the situation. For example, chaos corruption spreading beneath the feet of demons or chaos space marines.

I got a hobby question.

So I like the artstyle of the right pic of dutch soldiers. I painted the barbarian on the right a week ago and I noticed that the blotchy skin and highlights reminded me of something, and I realized that it was this piece of artwork I had saved from a youtube video.

How does this style translate to something lik CSM or in particular death guard? It's very blotchy but consistently blotchy. It's uniformly non-uniform if that makes sense. Kind of like tiger stripes or cow spots or zebra stripes. For this reason I like using fyreslayer and guilliman flesh contrast paints for skin.

Was the Emperor making a deal with the Ad Mech rather than conquering them the definition of a Faustian Bargain?
>The state is solely in charge of the means of production; building your own Lasgun will get you servitor duty
>Even Space Marines must make deals with the Ad Mech because they are completely reliant on them for wargear
>All techmarines need to go to Mars, creating a massive training bottleneck
>Constant loss of technology as the only person who knows how to make something dies without passing their knowledge
>Constantly misunderstanding basic tech
>Disproprtionate use of slaves compared to other branches of the Imperium
>Gangpressing randos into being servitors
>Unironically requiring a rotting, but still alive human head to use as missile guidance systems
>Prevents the distribution of existing technology
>Majority of members are subjected to deadly radiation
>Ad Mech are willing to kill/lobotomize top-performing soldiers into being human RC cars, thus defeating the purpose of using veteran soldiers in the first place.
>Ad Mech do not care about humans or humanity.
>>
>>94680996
It's kind of wild too because each regiment is made from a hyper-specific culture. You'd think that when the Tallaran 41st goes to replenish its soldiers, they'd cycle out those who have done their duty. Instead, the overwhelming majority of IG stories end with either command abandoning them completely to repopulate the world they conquered or dropping them off on another planet where they fall to chaos almost immediately... while the ship that dropped them off goes back to their homeworld.

>solely in charge of the means of production; building your own Lasgun will get you servitor duty
Nope, plenty of other institutions make that kind of basic shit without oversight.
>Even Space Marines must make deals with the Ad Mech because they are completely reliant on them for wargear
True.
>All techmarines need to go to Mars, creating a massive training bottleneck
There are a few sources that have techmarines sent to more local forgeworlds. Has necessarily become standard practice for anyone on the wrong side of the great rift.
>Constant loss of technology as the only person who knows how to make something dies without passing their knowledge
True, but also a better effort at retaining and redescorvering technology than anyone else is making.
>Constantly misunderstanding basic tech
Debateable.
>Disproprtionate use of slaves compared to other branches of the Imperium
Highly Debatable, besides that the Imperium doesn't even consider this a bad thing. Servitors were in regular use under the living Emperor's rule.
>Gangpressing randos into being servitors
So does non-admech institutions.
>Unironically requiring a rotting, but still alive human head to use as missile guidance systems
Getting rid of the admech wouldn't resolve this, the Emperor fully agreed on the zero tolerance for AI policy, so much so that wanting more autonomous tech was a major motivation for the original dark mechanicum.
>Prevents the distribution of existing technology
Sometimes. Also performs the distribution of most of the existing technology.
>Majority of members are subjected to deadly radiation
Only the soldiers, who are a holy order beneath the priesthood, not technically members.
>willing to kill/lobotomize top-performing soldiers into being human RC cars, thus defeating the purpose of using veteran soldiers in the first place.
And the IG is willing to shoot them.
>Ad Mech do not care about humans or humanity.
Same as every other part of the Imperium.

The funny thing is, the answer to your original question is still kind of yes, it's just that most of your reasons are somewhere between misinformed and stupid.

It's strongly hinted that Emperor had active plans for purging that Mechanicum later down the road, but Navigators were higher on the list of allies of temporary necessity to wipe out, and could more immediately be replaced by his webway project. Replacing the machine cult would have been a far more involved process, but obviously everything went wildly off the rails long before it could happen.

There are two lines: Merchant and Protector. Merchant is the old fleet and it is basically made of civilian vessels converted into warships, ak a conscript navy. This is fine and even historically accurate of how navies came to be. There's no such thing as an unarmed spaceship. The more proper military vessel of this fleet is the Lar'shi or Hero class cruiser which was meant to go toe to toe with Luna class cruisers and failed to meet expectation despite building a very capable ship technically outgunning "the Battleship" (Il'fannor or Merchant class) of this line. On the other hand, the Protector fleet, on the other hand, was designed from the ground up to be a proper military fleet. From a gameplay stand-point, Tau fleets play like a modern navy, focusing on missiles and starfighters over ordnance.

I don't get why there are so many youtube channels focused on painting exclusively with contrast paints. If you learn to paint with acrylics you can paint anything, and they're more involved and interesting to work with. I'm not saying contrast paints are bad (or as the oldheads like to call them, inks) but I don't get the necessity to use one single product for everything.
One of the most fun parts of any artsy hobby is trying out all the materials and seeing which ones you like to use.

a good majority of viewers are new or unskilled hobbyists, and contrast methods are sold as a quick "get it on the table in minutes, no skill required" shortcut.

traditional acrylic painting with base, layer, shade, highlight, glazes and blends require more effort, more brush control, and are easier to fuck up. with contrast, if you fuck it up it might look like you colored outside the lines a bit. with traditional acrylic paints if you fuck up your model could end up looking like a half melted gumball.

it might also surprise you to learn that a lot of people who play this game, like a shocking amount given what this hobby is, actually hate doing art and creative work. they are playing it for the gameplay, the tabletop strategy game aspect, the number crunching, hang out at the club or go to tournaments and wrack up against opponents, or got into it through books and lore, and have little to no interest in the actual assembling and painting side of the hobby. for these people painting is an obstacle, a chore, and they are just looking to get it over with as quickly as possible so they can get on to the game, which has created a whole cottage industry of no effort ez paint contrast guides

I'm a GSC main and have decided to get a few Tyranids for the Grotmas detachment. I'm using proxies from the Iron Hive range of 3rd party models to give them a biomechanical horror vibe. Most things seem straightforward, but I'm not really happy with my options for ripper swarms from my parasite of mortrex. Giving enemy infantry the Alien treatment with chest bursters doesn't really fit the vibe I'm going for, as the salvaged biotech-horror monsters wouldn't exactly be growing up that way. Should I use D&D Intellect Devourers instead, as the parasite gives the brain the ability to hear the Patriarch and later be implanted into future biotech-horrors? Should I condemn myself to creating models representing an infantry meat slurry of parts, in a style similar to The Thing or Halo's Flood swarms, as the infection process causes sudden mutation and the body just can't expand fast enough? Maybe just cheap out and use metal ooze piles as nanomachines or some shit? I'm torn

GW knows it can't market to normies as a hobby anymore, and it's probably better for their accountants not to shy away from advertising as a board game. Newbies should buy a box of troops and a hobbying/craft set up, but in that scenario, GW only gets a portion of the monies. Sell them the idea that they need an army, and they'll drop hundreds and hundreds of dollars on repeat boxes for an instant pile of shame and a nice end-of-month report for GW. After that, intentionally manipulate the meta so the Spikes buy the new release or whatever model got a rules glow-up to clear stock. It's shit on purpose. Just wait to see what happens when they figure out how to use generative AI to "assist" digital sculpting.

As long as you work at a company you will learn all sorts of shit within it, even if the information doesn't partain to your job at all.
And you can just ask easily if another department is doing something, it's not some hush hush super sekrit shit. Especially if you work for the company.

Also people forget but Gav is part of the Old Guard at GW, he used to work there and he was with the company early on. Of course he'd know about shit that's going down there.

There is no reason to make this into a problem, or a "thing". Interests come and go, and just because you consider Warhammer, or 40k, or Wargaming your hobby, it does not mean you need to do it every day, every week, or even every month.
Do whatever you want in your spare time, and if you feel like painting some miniatures, do it. Even if its 2 years from now.
And if not, who cares. There are certainly other things out there you like to do instead. Its not either Warhammer or nothing.

No, there should be more religious schisms, more enforcements of imperial authority over rebellions that don't have to do with chaos or aliens, as well as petty intercine wars over resources, and different relations with neighbouring factions leading to clashes of ideologies, not to mention ancient vows that lead to uneven levels of supports and grudges over perceived slights caused by them.

the imperium is WAY too monolithic because GW's narrative are obligated to focus on external threats, but with 40k years of worldbuilding the above has been barely touched, implied or thrown away offhandedly at most.
>>
>>94682204
sometimes you're just not in the mood for shit, its not going anywhere

Reminder that even though every faction should have tons of infighting and internal desputes, we often see them fight others. This especially includes Chaos.

>>94682377
You mean DON'T often. And I agree. There should be a lot more Imperium vs Imperium conflicts in general, considering that's the majority of what you actually see on the tabletop.

I agree in spirit, but technically everything you describe does happen, it’s just that the Inquisition memory holes it after it happens. I doubt that GW is raring to do another Civil War plotline when a whole range of their products is centered around Civil War in 30k

Paint a single part of a model, clean a tiny bit, practice some freehand. You can get stuff done in 15 minutes. Though honestly I hobby for hours at a time once I’m in the flow of it. >if i go down to my somewhat-local game store and ask for a game am i expected to know all the rules, how many rule-related hiccups am i allowed?
It depends on the LGS, there's an awesome guy at mine who immediately got me into the local whatsapp group of 40 people with everyone being super friendly and going over the rules and whatnot. They are autistic but not in the "clinical" sense, it's just a group of people who are into this shit.

I’m apparently on the spectrum, so is my wife. We’re both very much part of the generation that got passed over the diagnosis though. Most of the people at the hobby shop will be very cool teaching you the rules. They will also usually corral the real tards so you don’t end up playing against the spastics that need a real wrangler to stop their meltdowns or bathe them.
In my life in the hobby I’ve only seen 3 of those.

Try shooting at your widest angle, zooming in narrows the depth of focus. At your lens's highest, it'll be as thin as a paper. You can also widen your depth of field by increasing the aperture, try shooting at f/11 or even 16. You don't need to worry about light since you're on a tripod, try to expose it as long as necessary. Like those anons said, focus stacking is another measure you can use.
I shot this at f/9.8, 0.5sec exposure. It can be better but much better than some others.

Slap glue on the edges after press fitting to see where there may be issues. I just chop the pegs off in some cases and can make it fit better without them. But most newbies aren’t too worried about gaps necessarily and are just happy for the “simple” assembly which is probably why they made the combat patrols that way.
>>
>>94683031
I mean, they're designed to stay together right, what's the point of gluing? I am going to be painting them so I will glue if there are gaps but if they're isn't then that should be fine then right? Also kinda sucks I can't paint the bases first because I have to peg them into the bases but I guess I'll get to see how hard it is to paint the base and model while they're already conjoined.
>>
>>94683029
good advice, anon. thanks.
>>
>>94683059
Actually I was wrong, focusing on closer objects narrows it down so shooting at your widest angle might not be the best option as you'll want to capture your minis and move your camera closer. This here basically explains the gist of it.

I HATE PUSH FIT! I HATE PUSH FIT!!!
>>
>>94683194
real
>>
>>94682452
don't zoom in as much, your camera will be taking extremely large photos so don't feel bad about cropping stuff down after the fact

macro photography is notoriously finnicky but at least with miniatures you can test things out basically as much as you'd like, since they're fully static
>>
>>94683194
I like push fit on bigger models. it's faster and makes painting sub assembly much simpler. why do ppl hate it so much?
>>
>>94684020
Half the time the pegs don't fit all the way and some have very awkward angles. 9/10 times it's easier to just cut the peg and glue normally.

The appeal of push fit died to me after the first time I did it.
