tournament results don't lie
abuelo's awakening is topping multiple tournaments past few days and its easy to see why

conventional logic was
>oh, it becomes a 1/1, you can just kill it with cut down LOL
but then you actually see it in action and its
>omniscience gets into play as a 1/1
>opponent tries to cut down it
>omni player simply counterspells it for 0 mana, or plays 3 instant speed dig spells chained together to get a counter, or they simply cast another omni/multiverse/reanimate spell from hand before giving priority for opponent to cut down it in the first place

Its really disgusting to see the deck actually dig through 50 cards in a row on turn 4 by chaining cantrips that dig. Confounding Riddle is the GOAT in that list, it can protect the combo, find the payoff, or on turn 3 it can set up the entire combo on its own
>dig 4 cards deep to find your missing land/combo pieces, while dumping omni/multiverse into your yard at the same time
Not even a comparison, that deck can run multiple disruptive pieces and ass tons of cantrips while running a combo that protects itself and ends the game the turn you cast it and can set up redundant stabs at the combo each turn
Squirming lists tend to implode on their own by either whiffing on pieces or missing colors
>>
>>94793418
What a dog shit level of low value
for 5 mana you should get unconditional reanimation plus multiple upsides
>need to sacrifice artifact fodder like its a more restrictive bargain
>your upside is getting a mediocre no-evasion creature, sure its a 9/5 with portal but who cares that's win-moar either the portal takes over or it doesn't
yeah yeah he's repeatable on attack triggers but who the fuck is ever going to take advantage of tinker multiple times in a game without being swept. What, are you dumping multiple portals and need to make opponent sacrifice 9 creatures and bring back 3 per turn?

Fuck that card it sucks
>>
>>94793744
The fact that there are SO many ways to cheat Omniscience in in Standard and also Omniscience in Standard at the same time,
I find hilarous.

The new brew is starting to feel like my best yet.

The stun lcoks hose aggro and Arclight. It has just enough tempo and value to sneak through or out-grind out wins against midrange. Control is sketch, but it's not really a major force in the meta right now.

Authority + Split Up is an absolute deth knell to creature spam decks. Company has plenty of tools to swat spells away while it pushes, but nothing to keep them away forever. And everything they invest to stall you from stopping them, requires them to invest more resources to the board.

More tuning is needed. In particular, its wincons are on the slower side, mere 3-power fliers to chop people down while they're stun locked. I would like some real heavy hitters to close out games, but those are few and far between in UW while also being efficient enough to not sacrifice power elsewhere.

Overall, it feels good so far.

The 10 teams
1. Aether Rangers: They have all terrain hover vehicles.
2. Champions of Amonkhet: Basri is a co-captain
3. Cloudspire Racing Team: The Kylem team from battlebond. Chandra is a co-captain of this team. Victory is worshipped as a god
4. Guidelight Voyagers: Accidentally joined the first race. The are racing not to win but trigger an anomaly like the one that tore them from their homeplane. They're the robots.
5. Speed Demons: Duskmourn's team the captains are Winter and the Speed Demon embodiment of vehicle death in speed who is chaperoning Winter. Racer include possessed survivors, glitch ghost, & razorkin.
6. Goblin Rocketeers: By goblin standards they are the best equivalent to NASA from the 60's on their homeplane. Their god is called BOOSTGOD who promises salvation from the barrier that walls of the plane from the rest of the multiverse. They joined the race to get back to their homeplane and spread the good word that the barrier can be broken.
7. Alacrian Quickbeasts: From Alcria. On Alcria each district has a mascot called a "soul" that embodies a beast. Each beast has a human counterpart that is soullinked.
8. Speedbrood: Born as small grub they seek to become a Radian. Radian are leaders that can become part of vehicle to become speed itself.
9. Keelhaulers: Shark pirates sponsored by Kari Zev. Ragavan is a member.
10. Endriders: From Gastal. Their most precious resource is water.

Aetherdrift story episode 1:
>Opens with Ishikari, an aether specialist in Ghirapur, during the Phyrexian invasion, reminiscing on how her professors told her her research area was foolish at best, dangerous at worst
>She's going to find her invention in her workshop, thinking on how the Planar Bridge and the Aether Revolt made her realise that other worlds were out there and getting somewhat obsessed with them
>She thinks that, much like academies hoard knowledge, Planeswalkers hoard their ability to travel
>She finds her machine, a 'net' of some sort, switches it on, stuff happens, and she briefly becomes 'one with the Blind Eternities' and that's all we know
>Two years later, we're with Spitfire, AKA Sita Varma, the current underground racing queen for Ghirapur, breaking into her own home
>Her father knocks at her door just as she gets back to her own room, and has to lie to her father to delay him coming in while she hastily gets dressed into anything but racing gear
>Her father, Mohar, has a reputation for being cruel and callous, but he's mostly just an overbearing doting dad to her, stifling but loving
>Sita follows him down to breakfast, and Mohar makes his opinions known on being charged so much for a doctor, the same as said doctor would charge (gasp) a commoner
>Sita pushes back a bit against that while internally noting that Mohar seems oddly desperate
>Mohar also calls the place Kaladesh during another rant about the fluidity of morality or something, and she has to chide him that it's Avishkar now
>The argument shifts into "why throw away a perfectly functioning machine" and Sita responds with "if it hurts people it shouldn't be used at all", and thinks even Mohar would agree to that much
>Mohar changes tack, and starts arguing that throwing away the name 'Kaladesh' is throwing away everything good the Consulate ever did

>Mohar continues his rant about people having their place, yadda-yadda, you get it, he's an old todger who can't accept progress or change
>The radio news station starts talking about a crowd gathering to look at the Aetherspark, found in the lab of one Ishikari Bindra after the invasion, and proclaiming it as the prize for the Ghirapur Grand Prix
>The news report starts talking about Gonti and Mohar immediately throws the radio across the room
>Mohar has history with Gonti, and Sita sympathises with his anger towards the former criminal lord
>He calms down with her help, and then starts talking about finding her somebody to marry, but quickly realises she smells of aether fumes, but she manages to brush off his worries
>Skipping forward sometime to the night, Sita puts on her mask and Spitfire gets out there
>Spitfire arrives at the Aether Rangers' garage, where some sort of report on Chandra is playing on some screens, which Spitfire quickly shuts off to get the crew to focus
>The mechanic she's talking to reveals herself as Pia, and apparently Sita's aunt, though that might've just been an affectionate term
>Pia and Spitfire talk about Chandra a bit, and Spitfire tries to make it clear that what works for Chandra won't for her
>Cut to Chandra, being hassled by reporters while she tries to remain undercover in Ghirapur
>Reporter first asks her where her favourite tea comes from, she says the shop she's at right now is the best, in the Multiverse even, which seems to make the reporter uneasy to hear
>Next reporter asks about her racing philosophy, which she just responds with "be faster than everybody else"
>Another reporter asks that, since she seems so unconcerned with the thrill of the race, is she after the prize, and she deflects the answer
>Reporter presses her, saying she's known to be interested in the Aetherspark and possibly for her lover
>>

Is she allergic to a Hornet Sting?
>>
>>94798127
>Chandra's internal monologue reveals that she is doing just that, because she wants to see the light in Nissa's eyes again as they travel like they used to
>Final reporter asks what it's like to be racing against her own mother, and if there's any bad blood, which Chandra assures that there isn't any problem but seems to not be comfortable with it
>Finally, to Winter, who sees Chandra's face on a screen and immediately decides he hates her, then immediately decides he doesn't have the energy to hate anymore, as he needs to study all of the racers
>The demon overlooking Winter reminds him, bring them the Aetherspark and he's free, fail and he belongs to the House forever

3 overlord of the hauntwoods
3 leyline binding

There's also a side-story about Amonkhet. https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/aetherdrift-hour-of-restoration
>Basri Ket gets to be in the story for once
>Basri's brought some twins to a woman named Mahitab, a former crop-mate of his, for some purpose
>The twins, fifteen years-old, were studying to be viziers of Hazoret, and they also point out that they're alive, which makes them pretty valuable to a point
>Basri takes Mahitab away to talk about things in more detail, and it's revealed they're trying to bring Oketra back, and to do that Basri wants to bring Temmet back, thinking he might have knowledge that'll help
>Also another woman, Niharet, is there, and also working with Mahitab and Basri on this
>Mahitab relents and agrees to let the twins work, but says if they die, it's on him, and he responds that he wouldn't let anybody die
>It's revealed Mahitab and Niharet are the only two left who know where Temmet was entombed, out in the desert somewhere, and Basri's willing to pay any price to try and bring Oketra back
>Niharet had been stuck in a sarcophagus as punishment for being a dissenter, but was freed during the chaos of the Hour of Devastation, and is now SEVERELY claustrophobic as a result, and wants Mahitab and her to live somewhere nicer, hence them agreeing to work with Basri
>The twins intrude, pointing out that at fifteen, they're practically middle-aged by Amonkheti standards, but Niharet snaps at them that those were the standards of the Great Trespasser, and declares that Amonkhet needs to protect its children to thrive and survive
>Basri takes the opportunity to make a promise to her that they will be protected
>They all later set out, Mahitab thinking on how Naktamun has improved bit by bit since Bolas, and the upcoming race does have people excited for SOMETHING new
>They make camp, some talk about gods, Niharet thinks the Chitin Court is as blameless as Hazoret and them for Bolas' crimes, Basri argues against that but whatever

That sounds like we're going to get the portkey ending from the 4th Harry Potter book.

>The girl twin nearly gets eaten by a sandwurm the next day, but Basri saves her even after she's impaled on its teeth
>They get her patched up, but she's clearly too badly hurt to do much more and her brother thinks they should turn back, but Mahitab points out they're barely an hour from their destination as-is
>Basri, torn between keeping the kid safe and finding Temmet's tomb, offers to carry the girl, which Mahitab finds some satisfaction in because it means he's not as hopelessly heroic as she thought or something I dunno
>They arrive at a pyramid half-buried in the sands
>They get into the pyramid, Niharet has a brief panic attack at being enclosed but Mahitab comforts her
>They come to a room with nothing but a single sarcophagus, where Temmet is apparently held
>Just as Basri begins to open it up, a voice sounds from behind them
>An undead monarch, who claims Temmet's body belongs to them, and them being loyal followers of the Chitin Court
>Niharet very quickly turns on Basri because she wants to bring the Chitin Court back
>Basri starts to protest as they take Temmet's body away, but suddenly something makes him smile and begins to pray
>Then the pyramid has its top torn right off, and a god with a lion's face appears, wielding Oketra's bow
>The undead monarch proclaims this new god a false one and orders his followers to fire on him, to literally no effect, then he flees
>The god grabs the monarch and Temmet's body, then flings the monarch aside, before finally speaking
>God proclaims himself as Ketramose, and Oketra as his mother, and that Temmet will serve him as he served Oketra
>Basri smiles as Ketramose heads back to Naktamun, while the lesbian lovers (oh yeah they were lovers) have a spat and a break-up over Niharet's concealing of her motives and beliefs
>Basri apologises to Mahitab for that, but she just shrugs him off and they go back to Naktamun

Map the Frontier is the best 4 mana ramp spell since maybe Skyshroud Claim and maybe including it

I'd argue -most- game states when you hit 4 mana you're out of lands in hand, so map the frontier becomes
>ramp +2 mana
>draw another land to hand
>surveil 3

There's only very few janky combo decks where I'd consider running conduit pylons in a vacuum, mostly because Otherworldly Gaze rotated and a deck without a 1 drop can use it to dig. But combined with Map the Frontier its like Invasion of Zendikar, But Good

I guess the idea was they couldn't use the original ones because likeness issues or something, because Themberchaud is also getting reprinted, just as Themberchaud.

I'm really curious about Amonketh chads and how they make them fit with the whole race theme, specially considering all their stuff should be about zombies, and other things
>>
>>94798488
The zombies seem to just be living with the living now, and the race participation is more just being done to give people something to enjoy and give them a break from all the hassle of rebuilding.

That was the case under Bolas too, the only difference now is that there's interaction with a bunch of feuding mummy warlords out in the desert.

will they print a vehicle that breaks this?
>>
>>94798721
Well, with Bolas, they were ostensibly mindless servants. Now they're actually thinking. There seems to be some sort of implication the Cartouches made them mindless, though there are still just the feral undead that pop up in the desert wastes too.
>>
>>94798794
(X) Doubt
Vehicles as equipments are really hard to make work and become not even broken but actually playable. You need a creature on the field to make them work or some absolutely valuos effect attached to it like Esika, Bankbuster or Copter.

Dual color archetypes in draft existed before Ravnica and not even Ravnica had 10 color pairs to a set, it had 4 in the large and 3 in the small sets that made up the OG block with Return having 5, 5, then 10 in the third set. And then in the OG draft environment the speed and existence of the bounce lands meant you could easily go 3 color.
Again your blaming Origins era design failures meant to babyproof the game on a plane that was only really effected by it after the precedent had already been established.

Moggs (note the double G) were specifically bioengineered on Rath by the Phyrexians/underlings in preparation for Invasion. Rath was an artificial plane made up of flowstone, which the Stronghold generated. The aim was to make Rath "overlap Dominaria's planar coordinates" so that the phyrexian invasion didn't have to rely (solely) on planar portals. Once the planes overlapped, they'd merge, and the armies of Phyrexia massed on Rath would simply walk out of Mordor...sorry, engage an ususpecting enemy without having to cross planar boundaries.

Dominaria has had its share of disasters since then, but I'm sure some of the rathi goblins (moggs) are still around. Flowstone still is. Cards referencing it were printed in DMU (2022).
>>
>>94799646
But specifically moggs were bioengineered to have traits the phyrexians wanted, while eliminating some of their problematic traits. They are much stronger than normal goblins, but even less intelligent. To be foot soldiers that unquestionably follow orders. They have features designed to enhance their combat potential, like the prominent cranial ridge to avoid their heads being smashed, and a natural ability to detect artifacts. And unlike normal goblins, they aren't cowardly or curious
The cards themselves try to represent this in a few cases, but mostly ignore it on a mechanical level and it sticks to art. IE mogg conscripts, flunkies and toady are all supposed to show how moggs are physically strong (above curve stats at the time) but intellectually weak and dependent on authority (can't do anything alone)
but most mogg cards just wound up being generic goblin chaotic / cowardly / strength in numbers designs that would work for any plane
>mogg fanatic
>mogg cannon
>mogg assassin
>mogg bombers
>mogg squad (really, buffalo springfield?)

Any judges here?

With Storm Cauldron in play, if I activate Soratami Cloudskater's ability, am I correct thinking that the cost (paying mana and bouncing) happens simultaneously and that I can only bounce the two lands that were tapped to pay for the mana cost of the ability?
>>
>>94800612

if this were 1gg, 3/4 reach and same ability, would it see play? probs not.
>>
>>94800928
Caultron is a trigger, Cloudskater is a cost. The land will be gone before it bounces.
The Cauldron trigger will find nothing. So yes you are correct, only the two lands used to pay the cost will bounce in most situations.

However, you don't need to bounce the lands you pay the cost with. You could pay 2, bounce two different lands, then bounce the two lands you tapped. If you're a psychopath, that is.

i think it's "in response to the trigger, I bounce this land", but that's a shitty, expensive combo

Pre-Spark Urza did not actively seek power until he actually needed it; becoming Lord Artificer and marrying Kayla was all done so he could get a book and study the Thran runes on it, and he was perfectly fine with burying his head in his work and didn't give a shit about what Kayla's father used his machines for. I feel like greenshell and rattlewurm might be replaced but I'm going to try out this deck tomorrow. The combo is retreat to coralhelm + llanowar scout/scaled herbalist + archway + landfall creature for infinite life. You can also get infinite surveils without the landfall creature if you just have 2 archways so thassa's oracle and a shuffle effect could be good as another way to win.

You could even play pioneer four horseman by playing gaea's blessing + thassa's oracle for maximum lulz.

Do people really forget about how the second time they did peace talks Mishra went behind Urza's back and convinced Kayla to fuck him and steal The Mightstone as requisites to end the war, with the implication that he wasn't going to live up to his end of the deal anyways?

How can commander be a casual format where you can play your pet cards when it's 100 card singleton and they make up less than 1/6th as much of your deck compared to constructed?
>>
>>94801868
>>94801785
So, wait, can I play 4 copies of each?
>>

>>
>>94801915
Because you can go to commander night and find people that agree to play jank or pet decks.
You can't show up to any local constructed format and expect people to not play tier 1.

During the period when modern wasn't firing at any locals near me I asked the players if they would agree to play without the cancer decks/cards and they said they simply would rather not play at all.
They would rather play zero mtg than agree to not play the most broken shit even if they hate it
>>
>>94801915
Because only 20 or so non-land card mater to winning in most decks, so you can fill up the rest with whatever you like.

I've really fallen in love with this deck I've been working on for the past week or so. It's been testing well so far and is fun to play. I've been playing dnt, maverick, and deadguy ale for over a decade and I've never had much interest in playing blue, but I decided to build it because I'm happy casting stoneforge mystic regardless of the other details of the deck and I may as well own all 4 of the main stoneforge archetypes. And I am not disappointed. It's a ton of fun.

TIL Kiki and Fear of Missing out is a combo that turns all your mana into an additional 2 power attacker plus a loot that draws them into the removal they need.
Really, I'm so glad WotC balances their cards so well. It's awesome to just instantly lose a relatively equal game because their cards happen to accidentally instantly win the game for no fucking reason, with zero investment.
