The only reason I picked mind 1 was because I don't want to forget anything and that is good for a spellcaster since then I can memorize an infinite amount of spells.Learning speed is not important since I have eternal youth and thus my learning is not limited to the span of a mortal life. It is foolish to waste points to make you stronger early on when there is no reason to be strong early. I will learn all spells of the world eventually, why waste points to speed it up? The being calm in a frantic struggle is something that I already am. This is a skill you can learn from studying martial arts and doing a lot of hard sparring.Solving mathematical equations fast is something I care not for. You have the potential to become more sensitive to the fundamental ground of reality where all things, living and non-living, are interconnected. This manifests in some of your species as high psychic ratings. The ability to see the future. Or view past events previously unseen. In others it is the ability to decipher the mysteries of the universe through intellectual or intuitive flashes. Not many races uplift themselves into space by themselves. Most races are uplifted--given technology and space travel by other races. This close proximity to the tenuous barriers between dimensions appears to be the reason why humans are observed and avoided.

>>94811863According to the Silmarillion, the elves are native to Middle Earth. Orome the Hunter (one of the Valar) found them while hunting Melkor's monsters, and invited them to Valinor. That's also why there are different types of elves. The high elves (Noldor) were the first grouo he found, the second were the wood elves, the third became the sea elves, and the ones he missed became "dark" elves. Not dark are in evil or underground, but due to the lack of the Valinor boost that the transplanted groups got.(Everything that went to Valinor came back permanently "better". Shadowfax - Gandalf's preferred mount - is the descendant of horses who came back from Valinor.)By the time of Bilbo Baggins, Feanor's faction of murderous wood elves had interbred with the dark elves to the point they'd merged into a single type of elf, also dubbed "wood elf".The Valar-as-aliens idea isn't necessarily wrong, but the elves-are-aliens is.

>>94812924>Is it better to have massive explosive strength or decent sustained strength?Depends on the situation. Bruce Lee (the martial artist) used to have a gimmick where he'd punch a target from only an inch or two away, demonstrating that almost all the force in the blow came from a single, massive explosion at the end of the move. But the longer a fight will take, the more stamina starts to matter. There's an old episode of MTV's "the Challenge" where one guy was just absolutely crushing his opponent in an elimination challenge. And then he hit his limit, and the other guy made this huge comeback, ultimately winning the challenge.

>>94813165>The Valar-as-aliens idea isn't necessarily wrong, but the elves-are-aliens is.Did you just ignore the “although they do not originate in Valinor” part? Not that Valinor *isn’t* a part of Earth, it’s just not at all dimensionally positioned the way the planet is. Sailing west to Valinor won’t take you there if you aren’t meant to go there, it would just take you to the not!Americas. Valinor is NOT America, despite being in the “west”.The elves are alien (a lack of familiarity is precisely magic as it is) because they’re the equivalent of a 21st century human conversing with a medieval person from the past. Lembas bread is like a mars bar. “You’re not you when you’re hungry”. A person from the future is an effective alien, especially if we’re to consider the very plausible notion that “aliens” are just alternative “humans” from different hairs of time / positions in spacetime. See pic.Galadriel was genuinely confused when Sam called her future seeing mirror magic. It’s alien to the hobbits, sufficiently advanced (taken for granted) to the elves. Is your cellphone magic? Imagine if a caveman called it magic, only to be met with “but it’s not”. “But we understand it” is irrelevant. It’s still alien/magic. To them.
Is there a point in making a cyoa?

>>94813475Tough shit then. Everything—every damn thing—is more alien than not. We’re alien to aliens. God is more alien than not. He just is. You can argue we’re all NOT alien because we’re all native to the same old existence/space. By such a point you see that alienness, like magic, is relative. The same way information is relative. What is not known is everything else out there.

It’s the birth of all religion. >Magic without the mystic is just shiny technology. To upkeep magic in a technological frontier you have to keep it mystical/mysterious, which -can- be done, it’s just hard. The physicists that poke at the very edge of understanding, coming to questionable, even ruinous, conclusions, is mysticism at its heart—the internal experience. Some physicists simply *knew* the truth, within themselves, and these individuals include the likes of Isaac Newton. The problem is mysticism is internal while science is external, but many mistake the internal as not being just another facet of the external. >>94814142I liked Entropist not necessarily for the setting, but for the interactions implicit to the setting, which were most overt with the multiplayers' build variety. From what we've heard, it sounds like Exalted Conquest is going to be doubling-down on build variety and interactions in particular. Most CYOAs are vague about the opposition the player faces and how likely they are to succeed, but Exalted Conquest is going to be defined by its opposition and the amount of possible combinations to confront them. That's fascinating to me. My favourite part about CYOAs is the deconstruction of them- the careful analysation of every facet and how they're all likely to interact together. An objective, measurable opposition increases the amount of variables to look at by an order of magnitude, and has me excited. Most of what I'm looking forward to seeing is the antagonists and what tools there are to dispatch them or, if falling short, be dispatched by. The interplay of engagement, the back-and-forth inherent to solving a problem when that problem is intelligent and trying to kill you with everything it has, that brings a visceral thrill to me I can't fully articulate. Good background that weren't overdesigned, a solid prose, powers that were didn't the setting they appeared in, stories that were large enough to allow multiple paths while not feeling aimless. Hm, or it might be Stellinearized. He's interesting to read because I like to see some CYOAs as connected and characters as recurring actors, so his loose metafictional themes really resonate with me.And the characters in Cityscape Skirmish + Hearts Adrift were excellent, probably the best written in my opinion, but that's cheating since they have a lot of "screen time" and aren't stuck as narrator voices.
>>94814699Arguments about builds were backed by lore dissectation.
Any CYOA based on martial arts + Cultivation?
>>94814703Thanks for posting it! I'll have to give it another read here in a bit.I like Nxtub a lot, too. His CYOAs have more verisimilitude than most and they're always well-executed. My favourite of his is probably the Hospital, that one stuck in my head for a while. There's a lot to dissect with his work and the vague explanations for things deepens that further. I remember there was a really interesting discussion breaking down the artificial layering of his CYOAs and trying to chart a chronology. Not many authors can manage to get enough substance for something like that. Nxtub is special, and I would say he's in my top 10 of all time. Aside from that, survival CYOAs are my favourite genre, and the weirder the situation is, the better. I'm inspired by a lot of those old island CYOAs. After my kingdom invasion OC is done (probably in a few more weeks, I've had family issues and writer's block holding me back for some time) I plan to do a sort of nightmare dimension CYOA where it's set up like a survival situation, but all of the danger is in directly, physically hostile opponents rather than curses or terrain, and the player needs to fight and defeat them to escape. The player will get stronger over time but so will their enemies, and they'll need to plan and strategize to survive. The emphasis will be 90% violent, physical or "martial" abilities. It's ultra-niche but I've always wanted to see a CYOA like that.
>>94814837>a sort of nightmare dimension CYOA where it's set up like a survival situation, but all of the danger is in directly, physically hostile opponents rather than curses or terrain, and the player needs to fight and defeat them to escape.Ah, I remember an old CYOA that was never posted here with a similar premise. >>94815099Do you mean the huge colony builder CYOA? Either way, that's interesting to hear. I'm looking forward to seeing it.>>94815165I cannot agree more. For CYOAs where violence is a factor, the enemies are even more important than the companions. It's unfortunate they get neglected so much. The biggest reason we don't see more of it, I suspect, is that enemies aren't as easy to make choices from.Coming up with the choice of a waifu or power is easy, but generating the same amount of choice from enemies is tricky outside of drawbacks, which can be good but sometimes miss. One CYOA that handles opposition really well is A Witch's Game, where you're in a mansion dimension and need to fight off a supernatural witch for a year to win. Instead of choosing a specific witch, it has you choose what powers she has access to, which is an interesting take on it. That one got a lot of engagement.I think an interesting way to handle enemies would be to have them be selected and give a certain amount of points to spend on skills, abilities, or whatever else. That way, there's a reward proportionate to the risk.
