Note that this guy Yoni Skolnik was charge of Development meaning he makes sure that the cards function under MTG's rules and are balanced. (Maro was in charge of Design meaning he comes up with and signs off on the card ideas)
So any broken cards are on Yoni's head.

Andrew Brown: Started 2016, Technical Lead for Play Design (He is the last major check in terms of playtesting and balance before cards go to print)
Corey Bowen: Started 2017, Representative for White on The Council of Colors (See Adam Prosak)

Of note is the high amount of D&D staff members on the Design Team, also the rest of the staff can be broken up into Old Guard staff, people who were there for like 3 sets before getting fired, and a bunch of people who worked on more experimental supplemental products like Conspiracy and the like, very much a Experimental Team project overall.

There was no magic scene where I live until a comic shop started hosting events. That was the only place to play for over 10 years.

About a year ago a huge tcg shop opened up, they have more space, better prices, a large variety of events and a staff that actually knows and cares about the game.

Would you despite it being inferior in all ways continue to support the other store too for what they did for the community?

An interesting point brought up in a previous thread is that for LCI Draft Red, Green, and White were the strong colors while Blue, and Black were the weak ones.
And for LCI the Council members responsible for Green, Red, and White were on the Team.

Also on a fun note is that the former White Representative, now the current Black Representative is also the lead Designer for the Horse Show Cards.

Corey Bowen is the current white designer and Chris Mooney is the previous one.
The Horse Show cards are a group of Silver Bordered Cards that represented another IP that Hasboro owns.
Its common practice to not name the show with the cartoon horses that was super popular in the 2010s outside of its containment board, because a bot that spams threads to death gets triggered by to much normal discussion of said Horse Show.
So its good practice to say Horse Show instead.

>Corey Bowen is the current white designer
That explains Caretaker’s Talent. He seems to be doing some half decent work.
>>
>>94816443
Ironically no, the last set he was on as Designer was Thunder Junction Commander and Assassins Creed and as Developer was LCI.

Bloowburrow was a Doug Beyer (The head of the story department and main worldbuilding guy) and Ian Duke (Reid Duke's brother), with Doug on Design and Ian on Devlopment.
In truth BLB was a smaller team with that was basically Ian and the story Department guiding a bunch of green talent at the company with many having only a few sets under their belt.
>>
>>94816524
Hopefully some of that green talent can push White back to having Phasing back in Standard again. It doesn't break the pie, fits perfectly with mono white's protection and exile removal, and never interferes with all the nonwhite bullshit that gets banned in Standard every year.
>>
>>94816625
Don't count Doug out, dude has only been the head designer on Core 2013, Jumpstart and Bloomburrow, but M13 gave White some goodies like the first Odric card.

>>
>>94816854
So many new cards are just "If I untap with this, I win" and it's fucking shit.
MTG exist on the careful balance of play patterns and answers. When every threat is just instant death, the game has no tension. You either remove it or you die. No gameplay left.
>>
Strictly Better Disfigure
-3/-3
Do it faggits

Powercreep in the right direction
>>
>>94816882
Its absurd how lethal the threats are. Unstoppable slasher on its own is basically a 7/3 for 3 that survives a removal spell or trade in combat. It breaks every rule, its simply unfair
My last game went like this:
>I get down turn 0 leyline axe, turn 1 vermin, turn 2 slasher, turn 3 equip attack
>opponent got down turn 2 manifest dread, turn 3 koma world-eater, turn 4 attack

So my opponent got his nutty draw, attacked with koma, dealt 8 damage, created 4x 3/3 tokens. Meanwhile I attacked in the first time and brought him to 1 life after the triggers, and when he blocked with 3x tokens on slasher and 1x token on rat, I get to double strike trample deathtouch for lethal damage because it would have taken him 7 total blockers to survive somehow
And the main thing holding unstoppable slasher back is that even if it survives tapped down from a removal spell, the opponent can probably win the game with their own resolved super lethal threat

And yeah, it's not enough that the fucking thing is above the curve to a near infinite degree, we're at the point where instant-death threats are ALSO resilient to removal for some fucking reason.

I struggle to comprehend how a designer of a game can't recognize these kinds of play patterns as bad game design. How do you get these positions while having ZERO talent, zero knowledge and zero ability in the field of games development.

It's obvious that the people designing these cares are TOTAL, COMPLETE laymen when it comes to game design. Worse, they're laymen who are also retarded.

It's a child-like understanding of card games.

My prediction for the teams color identity
G/U The Aether Rangers. The commander deck is in GUR.
W/B The Champions of Amonkhet. The commander deck is in WUB & Zombies was Amonkhet's W/B draft archetype.
R/W Cloudspire Racing Team. Chandra is red, their invasion was R/W, and their god is victory a red/white concept.
W/U The Guidelight Voyagers.
U/B The Speed Demons. Valgavoth and Winter are black and most of their cards have a blue tinge.
R/G The Goblin Rocketeers. Goblins are red and their is card that gives mana based on the number of goblins which is a green ability.
G/W The Alacrian Quickbeasts. Their cloth is green and white diamonds.
G/B The Speedbrood. Their spoiled car is green whith a graveyard cost so it must be the G/B archetype.
U/R The Keelhaulers. They're are sea themed pirates so blue and they have Kari Zev and Ragavan for red.
R/B The Endriders. Their plane is short in water(blue), food(green), & peace(white). The last Gastal native was black/red and they're mercernaries to work with the red/black outlaw archetype from OTJ.
>>
>>94816932
7/3 in that its the same speed clock on average

>first attack 11 damage

>we're at the point where instant-death threats are ALSO resilient to removal for some fucking reason.

I think we need a new term for post-FIRE design
Its only a matter of time until we get 2-3 mana creatures that combine all the favorite themes of wizards
>avengers level threat that kills you in 2-3 hits
>produces card advantage
>cheats mana costs
>resilient to removal
Its going to be something with every single factor combined

I'm not going to say I'm particularly great at design, but I do have personal skin in this game as I've actually don it. (Custom sets for drafts with friends.)

Wizards is just beyond unhinged at this point. No individual currently designing for MTG has any talent, vision or integrity. It is simply a team of retarded hacks being led by greedy, disassociated egotists.

Every format is shit. Art direction is abysmal, (Though some individual pieces are great), the lore is among the worst of any IP in existence. I wish it weren't so.

And the post-FIRE era is the mainline Universes Beyond era, which we're entering soon.

Now that being said Oculus is a powerhouse for a 3drop that snowballs out of control. If you aren’t playing protect the queen and aren’t jamming Murktide with protection up and instead your deck is throwing creatures at the wall expecting them to get removed until one finally sticks then it is a great card. Reason logic being if you jam creatures vs if you protect the queen: they try to answer Murktide, you counter all their stuff, if they rip an answer to Murktide the next turn it’s really bad for you. All Murktide did was damage and if they rip an answer they stabilize. So you want to jam lots of counters. Protect the queen. With Oculus one turn and it has snowballed and valued. You can rip an answer but it’s too late. It’s good if your plan is jamming threats because they kill it, you play a threat, they kill that threat, you keep going until you get even one turn where they stumble and that will win you the game. Oculus dread manifesting a Oculus ftw

Anyways thanks for reading frens
>>
>>94816722
>>94816784
PTCG is fun only as a side-game. Most games boil down to t1 wins by excessive single-turn combos that take 5 minutes to resolve. I like to come back to PTCG every few months, grab one of the meta decks I find actually fun to play and then play it for a few weeks only to take a break for a few months again.
You would be much better playing Duel Masters instead.
>>
>>94817062
Why are you so hung up?
I'm playing with gnawing vermin because its the only decent 1 mana self mill in a meta where you autolose the game if you don't have a 1 mana play to interrupt aggro. Even if otherworldly gaze was legal it would still be tough to survive turn 2/3
I play leyline axe because it makes slasher/oculus become 2 turn clocks and even leftover self-mill cards like gnawing vermin, fallaji archaeologist and overlord of the balemurk can close out a game

UW djinn oculus is dying off for a reason, I'd run pure dimir if I didn't have to splash white just for helping hand
>>
>>94817113
You can protect the queen with Oculus and that’s a very strong strategy but I feel like most protect the queen games are decided the turn you cast Murktide finisher queen with protection up and 2 mana vs 3 mana is huge. It feels like they can’t start casting it and holding protection until turn 5, instead of turn 4 with Murktide, and turn 3 it is wasted exiling their yard and getting it removed
>>
>>94817072
Yeah Oculus is nuts and UB Frogtide is one of the best decks in Modern.
See, if you want to say that a card is too pushed then choose a good card from a good deck.
Instead of the guy choosing a card that's barely strong enough to see Standard play anymore in his epic 3-colour Vermin-Axe deck that totally wins bo1s on Arena sometimes I swear.
>>
>>94817149
It’s more telegraphical and punishable, but more punishing too. There’s my argument for why Oculus is worse than Murktide. 3 mana no protection no etb creature dies to Push
>>
>>94817042
It's basically hearthstone where value is so easy to generate that every game is just slamming game ending threats over and over into each others removal with the player that misses on answers first losing. It's the end result of reddit design where le 4 drop must suck your dick and do a backflip to be "playable" and where only spot removal is allowed to be good with no mana denial or other forms of interesting interaction.

needs to be

>Target player separates their hands into a face-down pile and a face-up pile. Choose a pile, then look at it. Choose a nonland card from that pile....

That's more tactical
If they reveal only nonlands, you'd have to be a dumbass and pick the land pile.
>>
>>94817305
He’s right that it would ruin the gameplay loop if people did that but a simple “if this fails, cantrip” clause would fix it.. or even better than a uninspired and weird cantrip:
>Choose a nonland card from that pile. If you can’t, choose a card. That player discards that card
I think that’s better mechanically
>>
>>94817317
They've done that before but its so fucking clumsy and it also can potentially lock people out of lands anyway. Bandit's Class is the worst offender for this kind of attempt, way too powerful
>>
>>94817304
>1 mana distress with the familiar proviso so it always goes at least 1 for 1 no matter what
>actually better than familiar because they can't just keep lands to throw into it
Print that shit into common so I can run it in dimir in pauper
>>
>>94817314
That’s a good fix too. They can “offer” cards faceup if they go for the land trick so you never have an excuse for whiffing, it was a choice
It’s honestly a different gameplay from >>94817317 and I’m down for both
>>
>>94817324
Personally I like the appeal of the two face down piles from a gameplay perspective. The opponent gets to do some stuff before getting his pants pulled down, has agency and if divides the hand evenly can feel lucky

>>94817314
This one is so sick too and either could be 2B sorcery that choose 2 cards instead

There, that's the card.
>>
>>94817343
Cantrip clause would mean it cantrips if they are empty handed. The idea was to make getting Thoughtseized the least unpleasant experience it can be more than the tactical focus. Tactics are fun but the focus was what’s fun for the opponent and “offering” up cards is sick tactics but the two facedown piles fingers crossed is just neat

>>94817354
Say your opponent is on Primeval Titan and you are aiming for that card. With the faceup pile offering mechanic the opponent would feel like no matter what the Titan is getting picked. It’s either face up or they pick the face down. With two face down piles they get to experience tension and relief
>>
>>94817368
Rather, the opponent can put the titan in the smaller pile to protect it

Because in EDH red has to go through 120 life of opponents so formats where players only have 20 life get to eat shit I guess.

>Open with Mohar meeting yet another old friend, Rudra, a guard captain who lost a lot of his status and wealth in the revolution and now has to sleep in the barracks with his men, which Mohar finds horrible, because this man was a hero in his eyes
>They get to talking about how Mohar defend Rudra when Rudra was court-martialed, and he uses that to try and persuade Rudra to help
>He elaborates the plan: They want to end the race by laying a trap at the finish line, Rudra warns that it'll be bloody but Mohar says of course it will be, no revolution that's worth it has ever not been (he says after the revolution that was largely bloodless that led to Avishkar, etc.)
>Back to Vin, interviewing Grennar, a sponsor for the Grand Prix, who is an ape with some of his bones on the outside
>Grennar doesn't quite understand what cameras are, so he's a bit upset that only Vin and his interpreter are there
>Grennar's from Muraganda, and Vin asks him about it, and particularly about the floating islands, which Grennar cuts him off and says they're not floating, they're falling
>He says that all these 'floating' parts have been falling since the moon, and when they tire of falling, they'll land
>Grennar then, thinking the audience is 'in' the camera, throws the camera at one of these falling parts for some reason
>Back to Chandra, who's thinking about how cool she thinks trees are after meeting Nissa and also Wrenn who she's sad about losing
>One of Chandra's teammates clotheslines themselves on a branch and that vehicle nearly takes her head off as it crashes toward her
>Two Guidelight Voyager racers are alongside her, vaguely armed and vaguely threatening, and her attempts to parlay are met with beeps so she just speeds through the wreckage while the Voyager racers crash and explode

>The tree's also basically just a giant wall in her way thanks to her detour of sorts, so she does what she does best and burns a path through it
>Chandra's currently in first, and she looks behind to see the Rangers in second
>But as she gets through her tunnel, she finds Winter suddenly ahead of her, and gets pissed off at him for clearly cheating somehow
>Back to Spitfire, wondering what Chandra even wants the Aetherspark for
>She lets the Amonkheti team carve a path instead of taking Chandra's tunnel, and she also seems confused on what THEY want it for
>She also catches sight of the guy who died and was brought back, and remembers having met him briefly before the race started, and he seemed nice
>Anyway, she remembers what the guidebook said for Muraganda and how to best get around, mostly remembering the floating islands above and specifically pieces breaking off the moon, which cause quakes when they land in great enough numbers
>Said quake is picking up right now, of course
>She guns it for an official Grand Prix shelter, but looks up briefly and sees something that triggers a bit of a trauma response from the Phyrexian invasion, seeing something suddenly 'cut through' the sky like that
>Spitfire's ordered by Pia to take shelter until the danger passes, and briefly considers not doing that because it'd give her a huge advantage, but she's not that stupid
>Cut to Min, or rather Mincemeat, of the Endriders, who are all collectively that stupid
>Min ends up falling into a pit alongside some other riders, but ends up falling rather nicely into Far Fortune's ride's trunk somehow
>The people in the pit are accosted by raiders from Muraganda, specifically lizardpeople riding dinosaurs, and she curses before we cut away

>Unfortunately they missed a snare trap in their way and now Daretti's ride is upside-down
>Redshift gives his goodbyes to Daretti, self-destructs his own sidecar, and then all the Rocketeers just leg it and leave Daretti to his fate
>Chandra is similarly not smart enough to take shelter, mostly because Winter isn't either
>She's accosted by raiders too, but manages to bypass and fight them off
>Winter, meanwhile, doesn't fight the raiders off as well and Loot is nabbed from his ride into a sack, and Chandra stops her racing to go and save him, telling her co-captain to finish for her
>She then jumps onto a dinosaur
>Spitfire, back in the race now, activates another turbocharge thing to blitz through all the chaos of the raiders and everything
>She uses a dinosaur as an impromptu ramp, it's cool
>When the turbo wears off, she hears Pia pleading for her to stop to try and help Chandra because Chandra's ride is totalled and she might be in trouble
>Spitfire has a flashback to her father during the invasion, and seeing her... Mother or her mother's friend's house I'm not sure which, getting crushed, and decides to spitefully turn her communications off instead of listening to Pia
>Cut to Loot, for once
>Loot is in a bone cage, which he at least finds an improvement over the metal one, but mostly he just finds EVERYTHING scary
>Also Daretti is yelling VERY loudly at his captors nearby
>Loot's surprisingly pithy in his own narration, annoyed at losing his privacy so soon after gaining it when Daretti is plopped in next to him

>Daretti manages to pull out some chocolate out of some compartment he has because why not, and Loot reminisces on it smelling kinda like what Vraska gave him sometimes
>Daretti melts it into hot chocolate with some mugs and water he just has on him because fuck it this man's a living compartment of stuff
>Daretti starts ranting about his situation while Loot tunes him out, because he's spotted a friend, the flaming girl who helped him earlier
>Chandra is doing her best to be sneaky, which is surprisingly well considering she's Chandra
>Chandra eventually gets right up to the cage but meets a raider just as she does, and just as she's about to blow her stealth with a fireball, the raider crumples and Pia appears right behind them

Also, a side-story, the second one (and I think last one). https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/aetherdrift-like-no-other-beast
>We're with Khrad, a guy on Muraganda, the prince of Mon'Telu, whatever that is, skulking through some underbrush and tracking the scent of blood, iron and some smell he has no name for, because these fucking cars are here
>His raptor companion, Grazak, is alongside him
>Khrad finds the utter lack of life around the area he's investigating to be deeply unsettling, because life is just EVERYWHERE in Muraganda
>He jumps out into a clearing, his Star-Sword held ready, with a roar of battle
>And there's nothing there but wreckage of metal, more metal than he's ever seen before
>Some bug-eyed creatures emerge from one of the wrecks
>Krad fights them off because he's basically Conan
>He realises these bug things have seen beasts like Grazak before, so they're not too scared of him, but he feeds Grazak some sort of pearl, which makes Grazak grow fucking huge
>The bugs do some weird magic to blind him, but he's too cool for that and just wins anyway
>He mentions there being no sign of the beast an oracle foretold here, but Grazak manages to sniff out a trail of some sort
>Grazak leads him to footprints, which are likely Khrad's quarry, and he hears a distant roar from whatever made them
>Back to a few days prior, and Khrad is in Mon'Telu, the central stronghold of the Telu-Set
>The root oracle proclaims that they have been invaded by some beasts beyond their understanding, from some far-off realm
>The beast the oracle says is closest to them will fall regardless, but if they don't get it, their enemy, the mage Amarth-Tel, will
>King Khal listens to this proclamation, and decides that something must be done about the beast and Amarth-Tel, however he laments not being able to go himself
>Khrad interrupts his musing and says "fucking hell Father I am clearly capable let me go"

>Khal is hesitant to let his only son go, but he also knows it'd be disrespectful to keep a warrior behind from such a quest
>He prepares his son best he can, and reminds him that their people do not kill without passion, and gives him the Star-Sword, the only pure-steel weapon they have, forged from ore that fell from the sky
>He also gifts him the pearls for Grazak
>Khrad is aghast at his father using any sort of magic, but King Khal persuades him that it is an edge he must use at the very least
>Khrad leaves, and the narration notes he wouldn't be back for several years
>Back to the present, and it's clear the tracks he's following are vehicle tracks, not a beast
>He hears a voice just ahead, and finds Amarth-Tel himself atop this 'beast', and demands he release it
>Amarth-Tel proclaims that it is no beast, but forged from alien steel and imbued with living flame and dismisses Khrad
>Amarth's pet ooze that's pulling the vehicle lashes out at Grazak, and Grazak leaps up and onto the vehicle, and Khrad is about to stab into it when he sees somebody held captive
>It's a VERY pretty lady, from Telu'Ahn possibly, and Khrad stops thinking of things besides that for a little while
>That distraction's enough for the ooze to launch him off and he laments not only that Amarth has the 'beast', but also such a beauty held captive
>As he laments, somebody else appears behind him, a gorilla druid named Chatal, and Khrad asks why this one's interfering, they're known isolationists, and Chatal says needs must, basically
>Chatal proclaims the 'beast' as a vehicle, and Khrad asks him to explain what he knows
>Chatal simply says that the world is much, much larger than Khrad knows, and advises him to use that knowledge to temper his pride
>He hands Khrad some sort of amulet, which will apparently grant mastery over the vehicle if used properly (I assume it's a key)

Nowadays, the Pokémon card game is hot garbage, and it has been since the Black and White Block. Everything is Big Basics, undercutting the most iconic mechanic of Pokemon: Evolution. Plus it's very pay to win. You can't really win tournaments unless you use one of the 3 best decks made entirely out of money cards. Expanded format is a little different, but nobody plays it seriously, because it's even more degenerate, and the constant power creep on mons means you still have to buy new cards all the time.

The two best ways to play Pokémon is e-Card block constructed, for low power games, or EX Block Constructed (Gen 3). Both can be played online for free using TCGOne, but there aren't too many players online at any one time.

So they’re going to win, fucking over the “try to end the race” angle, Mohar will reconcile with Sita even though she DIDN’T win because she doesn’t need to be a winner to be worthy in his eyes, Jace will realize he was too far gone, Chandra will try to give the Aetherspark to Nissa, but Nissa will end up giving it to the Amonkheti to heal their world because that’s her whole thing. Anything I’m missing?

People absolutely hate any tactic in anything that removes your ability to play the game. Mass land destruction, mill, oops all counterspells. This extends to all games like stunlocking in videogames and turn 0 wins in yugioh
>>
>>94819906
okay but just as bad is any tactic that makes it so the game ends without any of my spells doing anything or any choices being made
if my opponent is dealing 20 damage with red 1-drops in the first 3 turns then okay nothing I could have done would have mattered.

discard / ld / counterspells can take away your ability to play cards, but aggro/combo also take away your ability to play cards.

See, at least something happened in the turn 2 win.
Mill is just, "Oh, you had a nice top deck? Well, hope you have recursion/graveplay."
Countering, aside from having the grave mistake of only allowing Blue to interact with the stack, is also just, "Oh, you were going to win? No, I think the game should go on longer."
Land destruction also just drags the game out.

Yeah, each of those things add a layer of strategy, but we're talking about a game where "midrange" is turns 3 and 4.

Specifically it looks VERY much like her hand as seen in the art for Cathartic Operation, with the blackened skin, the claw-like nails and the bandages. It COULD be Gonti, but Gonti's hands just look like normal hands, if fucky and segmented, as the recent Gonti art shows.

Who fucking cares? You top deck what you top deck. Unless you're playing against lantern control (which is pretty distinct from normal mill) or you're doing a lot of scrying, then it doesn't make a ton of difference other than the psychic pain of seeing your precious cards going in the yard.
>>
>>94820121
Nah, Jace and Vraska are cute. The Loot thing is a little weird, but whatever. I'm just mad that they didn't use the Cathartic Operation art on a real card.
>>

I don't agree with it I was just telling you the reasoning behind it. people don't give red rush nearly as much flak because a bullet train going mach 90 and turning you into red mist is preferable to being tied to train tracks while you have to watch this big rusty bastard slowly roll up and pulverize you
>>
>>94820136
Loot's grown on me as a character from today's story at least, because he's now actually a character instead of a MacGuffin. I'm still not sold on his design, but him looking so completely strange seems to be an intentional thing, he doesn't look normal to ANYBODY.

>>
>>94820174
Well, he could just as easily think about Jace for something else later, but it wouldn't surprise me if Jace kind of isn't great at caring openly like Vraska is. Jace is a neurotic mess at the best of times and though he clearly cares for Loot it's also obvious he's more just sort of happy if Loot's safe rather than actively looking after him when he is.

It's fine in EDH. Good even since you have multiple opponents, it provides a good amount of value. Especially if you can recur it.

This makes me sound like a footfag degenerate, but it genuinely bothers me. Her hands are black, so shouldn't her other extremities be too? And if not, why are they a different skin color from her face and torso?
>>
>>94821033
It's meant to, presumably, be an after-effect of her being healed of compleation. Prior to compleation her hands were green too. Compleation completely covered her arms in metal so I guess a side-effect of removing that is that her arms are still kinda fucked-up-looking.
