Thirty (30) starting life is objectively superior to fourty (40)
>>94817890>If you could choose one card (outside of Black Lotus) that is restricted in it's respective format and make it playset legal again, which card would it be?Literally no fucking reason whatsoever that shit like Cleanse/Crusade is banned when shit like Mass Calcify is perfectly fine. And HOW MANY "destroy nonblack creature" cards have been printed in the last 30 years??? Come the fuck on, grow the fuck up. Also Pradesh Gypsies has beautiful art and does nothing awful, why the fuck is that banned?
SHIT THREAD QUESTION THIS IS /EDHG/ RETARD>New TQ>What power level do you aim for building a deck? What does it actually come out as? Why is it always 7?
>>94821926I don't aim for a specific power level, I just build what seems fun to pilot. According to Commandersalt, I have two 7s, three 6s, and one 5.
>>94821486Because someone might get offended, also WOTC hq is in Seattle.
dead formatdead game lmao
>>94821926Power levels are useless.A better metric is turns-to-win with no interaction. And in that case, turn 7-12
>>94821926Everything is normally a 7 because it's a 7 relative to their playgroup.Everyone is usually trying to build with the people they play with in mind
>>94821486The best reason I heard why cleanse is banned is because it makes people think of ethnica cleansing.Personally if you see a bunch of monsters die and see the word black and cleanse you think of killing minorities you are way more racist than a lot of the people you would claim to be racist
>>94819386This.WotC nuked the authenticity of the game.
>>94821926I just build what I like. Usually somewhere between 8-10. When you add in enough neat things from other formats you're usually miles ahead of the average edh deck.
>>94822658No. Many bad decks can win quickly and many great decks can win slowly. A better metric is:>Can you identify your wincon?7>Can you win through interaction?8>Can you win through free interaction?9>Can you win consistently through multiple pieces of interaction, some of which are free?10
>>94821926I look for a commander/theme that seems fun, then build it to be as powerful I can make it with the resources at my disposal without betraying that themeLike I have a Phage the Untouchable deck that's jam packed with all the most powerful black cards I can get my hands on, by the WotC bracket system it would probably qualify for whatever the highest tier ends up being, but it's still fucking Phage
>>94817890>tqThis is an EDH general my guy, but I would probably unban Jeweled Lotus if I had the chance. I don't think it was truly that banworthy. It was really good, but limited to your commander. Most loops that used it were also cucked by the dime-a-dozen grave hate. Dockside deserved the banhammer though, as did Mana Crypt.
>>94821926I dunno, what "power level" do precons average at? I usually just buy precons and slot in some thematic or pet cards, and change out all the basics for old border shit.
>>94817890>If you could choose one card (outside of Black Lotus) that is restricted in it's respective format and make it playset legal again, which card would it be?Free my nigga. If Cyclonic is okay there's no reason he can't be.
>>94823788Crypt was fine, dont be silly. Jeweled lotus only did degenerate things, and wasnt very good in general.
helix kings, how often have you gotten the win off?>hard mode no infinites manamy record is 4 wins with it no infinite mana
>>94823828>cheaper card that literally wins the game vs. more expensive card that gives etbs again and only really kills tokenslol
>>94823855most mentally retarded take ive seen, if cyclonic isnt winning you the game its saving you from losing, its literally never a dead card while biorhythm can fuck you if you play it poorly
>>94823889Just run shaman and quit your shitposting.
>>948219261-10 Scale is dumb, you just need 5 tiers:>cEDH>High power casual>Low power casual>Precon/Jank>Actual trash>>94823911I want to be able to run both.
>>94824308>>cEDH9 10>>High power casual7 8>>Low power casual5 6>>Precon/Jank3 4>>Actual trash1 2
>>94824503Delineating that finely only causes more confusion since it makes it harder to accurately assess how powerful a deck actually. Rating your own deck a 7 (and holding 7 as an ideal) has become a meme in MTG because people who do so are almost always over or under rating their deck.If I say my deck is 'high power casual' instead of '7', it's more likely I'm rating it accurately compared to the assignment of a numeric value and it better communicates what other players can expect from the deck's performance.
Gah two threads. Are these worth running or is the tempo loss not worth it?
>>94823837Crypt should be banned for its price alone. If WOTC isn't willing to reprint it to worthlessness like sol ring then it shouldn't be allowed given it ramps you by two turns for nothing. Sol ring would be also be prohibitively expensive if it wasn't reprinted to death in precons. I don't mind it in the format if everyone can get their hands on it, especially since it helps you play higher CMC commanders outside of green in a format where that's become harder and harder to do.
>>94824619Unless you're playing a cycling a deck or deck that specifically wants to put lands in the graveyard I don't see what you gain by running them.It would help if you actually told us what commander you're building.
>>94824681>Unless you're playing a cycling a deck or deck that specifically wants to put lands in the graveyard I don't see what you gain by running them.I have no synergies with them, but I'm in gruul so being able to draw while behind on the board is a struggle. Being able to cycle the lands away for more usable cards in the mid/late game sounds useful, but I'm wondering if that's a scenario that will come up often enough to outweigh the lands entering tapped which could trip me up early on.I'm just playing Ruby. Ramp into ramp into play 7-drops every turn.
>>94824807With your commander there are plenty of spells in green that can draw you plenty of cards, just stuff those into the deck. You want your draw effects to provide card advantage, not just filter through the deck.
>>94824619the multicolored cycling lands aren't bad if you're on a budget, but I wouldn't run the monocolored ones outside of either a cycling deck or a deck that wants lands in the graveyard.
>>94824619The rightmost one is at least fetachable but I'd rather run a shock, fetch, bond, surveil or slow land over this.
>>94824619I love cycle lands I run them in almost all of my decks

>>94825497>next end stepIt does literally nothing
>>94821926Power levels aren't real. However as a basic rule of thumb I always avoid including the following:Tutors.Combos.Blatantly broken cards.Oppressive cards that cause durdling unless my deck has a consistent set up where I can gain advantage after symmetrical board wipe/land destruction/winter orb shit.I want to have fun and for others to have their fun. If I wanted to be a tryhard dork playing a hyper efficient deck that constantly plays out the same way that aims to win instead of just do janky cool thing XYZ I'd stop being a coward and go play an actual competitive format instead of the silly multiplayer one. Those are the only two power levels, fun decks with self restraint, and faggy cEDHers.
>>94821926Turns out your TQ was just as retarded as mine, retard.

>>94826258Pic unrelated?
>>94827944Have you played any other card games in the past?
>>94827944You can jump straight into commander but I might recommend that you go to a draft event at your local game store. I've always encountered friendly, non-sweaty people playing Draft (because you can't build your deck ahead of time) and honestly people will give you good advice on what to draft in my experience. You build a deck with whatever you pull, and let people know that you're new and they'll usually help you out. If they're a real sweatlord, at least the game will go fast and you can usually try to find someone to play a casual game against while waiting for the next round. The big advantage over jumping straight into commander is that you can learn magic fundamentals better in this format, draft removes the problem of unbalanced power levels (unless someone drafts something godlike) and teaches you a little of deckbuilding. My favorite commander decks I've ever built were out of draft chaff that I slowly upgraded over time

I like the idea of playing "multiple cardtype tribal" but i don't know which commander is better for it. >>94830433I honestly don't know exactly what hapened>>94830437Yeah, and then you add a bunch of those to your deck only for your commander to get exiled. Trust me, i've gone down this road and adapted to my meta by just adding a lot of hexprof/shroud if i'm playing a deck that REALLY needs the commander. But yeah, it also has made me give up on decks that don't function without the commander like Baba Lysaga, which is a shame because i really like her
>>94830180Baba Lysaga is genuinely a shit commander. Every time i have played against her its the same thing, whoever's playing her runs a bunch of shit cards because they have multiple permanent types, sacs a few times and drains the table for like 16, draws a million cards and then just durdles around and loses.

>>94830758you don't need wincons. You just stop your opponents from playing the game. Everything else is the same.
>>94821926>What power level do you aim for building a deck?7>What does it actually come out as?5.5-6.5>Why is it always 7?A few reasons. Firstly, rating inflation makes people treat 1-10 rating systems as if they are 5-10. You see the same thing with rating people, 7 is the "safe" way to say you aren't attractive but not outstandingly ugly either. Secondly, that is around the power level where you either need expensive cards or infinite combos to push ahead and most people don't want to do that.

They seem to be coming back in style, but it makes me a bit more vulnerable to my own null rod shenanagains.>crystal vienNot my schtick, though I have considered it.>trickbindI guess stifle could be this. How does it play? I feel heavy on 2 drops.I appreciate your point of view, but I understand things a little differently. In the tournaments I play, a lock is never going coast to coast. Either they resolve and I slow people down for a few turns, or they get countered and people have less interaction for my combos. I play it like a tempo deck, not a stax deck. The goal of my deck is to be as consistent as possible. There are very few points of interaction that actually matter to my gameplan and I cant pivot around. Because I dont have the density of tutors as other decks, I try to out value my opponents by going a bit bigger, a bit less restrictive, and a bit more resiliant. This is how other formats metas adapt over time and it seems to serve me well, but it relies heavily on me knowing what my opponents run, or being able to tabletalk my opponents to find their wincons.

How do I build OPs pic as a commander deck? Preferably mouse tribal and very budget. I mean literally a 20 dollar deck max. Just want tips and tricks or what to search for on scryfall to put together the deck. Or mechanics that synergize with him. Should I jsut fill my deck with a mix of big creatures and tiny cheap haste attackers?
SpellslingerBros, I can't decide on if I want to make a Jeskai, Grixis, or Temur Spellslinger deckLeaning towards Jeskai because I like the powered up combat angle and I think Kykar is a really cool commander (and I have a Flooded Strand lying around) but I also like Anhelo because I think Saccing creatures to copy spells is cool. Temur is mostly Kalamax who looks like fun with him wanting to swing as a big creature. Any input on this? I'm trying to keep the deck not complicated stat tracking wise with things like Storm and such. >>94827944Look up some popular Commanders on EDHrec and proxy a deck of one you think you'd like to play, play some games and find out what you like and don't like, then start building some serious decks once you have the rules and gamestyles you want to play under your belt.
>>94827944>How do I get into commander/mtg as a whole?Go look at preconstructed commander decks and buy one that looks or sounds cool to you. >>94827944All these people telling you to just jump right into commander at the beginning are the absolute worst people to play with, I can guarantee you.Play Arena, then once you're semi competent with it, throw in using ctrl to activate full control mode to hold priority. Scryfall/Gatherer every card you're unsure how it would work.
I don't know why people say that commander is a good entry product and just ignore the sheer fact of how many people are starting to play in the commander erathe truth is (once you're over the basics) having a single card to contextualize your deck is an extremely powerful learning tool
>>94831379>having a single card to contextualize your deck is an extremely powerful learning toolIt also teaches you to think about the game wrong.
>>94831399It is the game now for better or for worse
>>94831264Really? I find the average deck runs way more artifacts. Especially 4c abominations.
>>94831379No it's not lmao>the truth is (once you're over the basics) having a single card to contextualize your deck is an extremely powerful learning toolHow come 99% of commander-only players never learn the basics then? Also it's literally impossible to learn the game in singleton-no-sideboard because you can't learn to pilot any decks since singleton isn't stable, and you can't learn to build decks, and you can't learn how to assess decks and how you should play against them because they're also singleton, and you can't learn how hate effects your own deck because no sideboard.
>>94831441You will demonstrably be a better EDH player if you learn 60-card first. It’s not a question of which is the “correct” way to play, it’s that always having your commander teaches new players bad lessons and results in them devaluing removal and other cornerstones of the game. And it takes a lot longer to learn those things correctly if you’re primarily engaging with the game through a four-player free-for-all with 100 card singleton decks.
>>94831379Commander is an awful way to teach people about magic. It reinforces the exact wrong lessons, few of the skills are transferable to other formats, it requires a massive commitment in terms of cardpool and budget, players are often supremely faggy and stifle new players growth, and very few of the skills are transferable. Like you can't play commander then sit down and play pauper while maintaining any of the fundamentals between the two. Card evaluation is already fairly difficult, and in commander you have tards justifying literally anything in the most convoluted ways possible. The reason most people start with commander is because buying playsets feels bad, especially with expensive cards. Not only that, but they're some of the only half-decent preconstructed products out of the box. You can always tell commander-only players when you ask them a few simple questions about either card evaluation, or proper deck building.
>>94830180Rendmaw seems fun but at the same time playing a 5 mana artifact creature commander is just asking for trouble
>>94831532>>94831514>>94831463>>94831399There's nothing wrong with ignoring non-Commander formats. Commander is a much different format from the others. There are only a few skills one needs to learn like the concept of combat tricks and interaction timing and these can be learned by just watching some youtube vids and playing against a competent deck. Just read the basic rules and learn the phases and how the stack works and you'll be fine for 90% of the situations you'll ever come up with, and finding solutions to the other 10% is just a Google search away. If you guys want people to play Commander like it's a sweaty competitive format, go play one of the other formats. Just admit you all are burnt out on Commander and want to go play Modern or Standard but refuse to for whatever stupid reasons you come up with. 99% of players don't want to become cEDH tryhards.
>>94831564If you lean into artifact Creatures more than enchantment ones you can hide Imotekh in a Rendmaw deck to have some back-up.
>>94831601>If you guys want people to play Commander like it's a sweaty competitive format, go play one of the other formats. Just admit you all are burnt out on Commander and want to go play Modern or Standard but refuse to for whatever stupid reasons you come up with. 99% of players don't want to become cEDH tryhardsThe fact you're making this point at all shows you lack the knowledge required to know what you don't know.
>>94831514I don't think format has anything to do with it I think the people you learn the game with has more to do with how quick you learn it. Commander definitely has more "DnD but with Magic cards" players but that is more the group you are playing with than the format you are playing still.
So i have a pile of clone creatures i'm not using anymore, pretty much every single greature clone there is and i had a somewhat schizophrenic idea of how to use them. Basically, i build a turboramp big creature deck with pic related at the helm. The idea is that i clone him multiple times to trigger his ETB, and i never vote for myself. Meaning my opponents will either let me draw cards, or slam something onto the table, which might be another clone to repeat the process. And even if my opponents get to cheat something big into play, i can just clone it. Am i cooking?

The reason why watching videos on youtube is a poor way to learn Commander is because it's not representative of most pods you'll play "in the wild".Youtubers and the like will run dramatically less removal because they're trying to keep their games punchy and mostly revolving around *cool moments*. You'll even here some of them post game talk about how they had answers to what normally won the game, but didn't play then to keep video run time down. They're also normally quite incestuous pods, in that they're playing against the same people over and over, and those people gravitate to certain types of play. Both will be factors that will inhibit your learning curve in actual live play.

>>94832628Generally in token strategies all of those are just winmore. The only time a doubler is actually useful is when enables a combo or a net positive to something
>>94832695That is interesting, in that case why are they so expensive? Is it just low supply? Was looking at pic related since the idea of playing Age of Empires in a magic deck sounds funny
>>94832690I'm very new to magic, so I'm not sure. I hear that Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin is basically a better version of Valgavoth so maybe that?
>>94832695if you just go all in with Mondrak in your command zone you can just use your guaranteed access to a token doubler to go for pure value
>>94832709It's the ultimate trap archetype, used exclusively by mid powered shitters to bully newer players. It's bad anon. Real bad, even fully powered.
>>94832628Thank god I cracked a Mondrak and Ojer Taq myself.
>>94832744I mean I'll agree wide combat-matters is something new players struggle against because they don't field wipes and counters; I'm not sure if it's genuinely incapable of being good though unless you compare it to cEDH.Forces players to care about board presence is which is something they might not have learned if they got their start in commander.
Somehow just learned of Glacial Crevasses. What a beating of a card
>>94832459i want to go back
>>94832709>in that case why are they so expensive?Because everyone wants them because they can, ha, double the power if your deck just by being part of the 99
>>94831111Why do you rank 3 colors so low?
>>94831111link the tiermaker
>>94832799You dont get it. All those cards are traps, they dont see play in any format. Going wide has nothing to do with it. The investment in a token doubler means you also need to generate tokens to be doubled. The timing and sequence are very specific. A large board of incremental tokens is far too slow when you can use any one of various overrun effects to win. If you arent comboing off, the required investment is extraordinary for minimal payoff. If you are comboing off, there are much more effiecent ways to do it. Finally, there is only one edh, which is why token doublers are a trap, and used exclusively by low power players.
Huh, didn't see this guy before. Time to be a massive shitter at the table
Speaking of Tokens, anyone have much experience with this guy?
>>94832423no way I just tasted a tight pussy I can never not go straight. Also I play Rakdos, Boros and Simic.

>>94832858Bummer.
>>94832854based normie
>>94832815>>94832744So they aren't worth running then? I believe you but is a good token generator that works on its own just better to put in there then?I don't really care about being high power CEDH I just want to have a good time having my peons build farms and shit proverbially and then swing with some big combat spellHonestly something like Elves might be a more streamlined way of doing that with Tybar or something
>>94832849He is funny in Mishra where you can turn your tokens into a bunch of random artifacts
>>94832870What colour(s) do you want to token in?
>>94832859he works as a commander if you explicitly use him as a finisher
>>94832823The more colours, the shittier the deck because of the saturation of cheap, powerful cards that dont care about flavour or design considerations. Intentional drawbacls are limited as is the design space because most of these decks can do everything. The expensive manabases, the homogenous deck lists, the obviously pushed and otherwise unplayabe cards; they're a mistake all around. Two colours is pushing it, three is too much.
>>94832878Color isn't really important, I care more about the specific commander and if they seem fun than that (which I know isn't the most efficient way to go about building a deck but it is the most fun way IMO) A few that stuck out were Baylan, Tyvar or Lathlil, or Zinnia from the precon. I like creature tokens but not a fan of treasures, food, maps, ect.
>>94832870>So they aren't worth running then?If you run a deck with a commander that can make tokens themselves, or aid in token generation, you should absolutely run a doubler. If you just kinda have a few token generating card, no, you can just go without. You don't need 3, 40+ dollar token doublers just because you have a treasure map in your deck.
>>94832895Should Varina run doublers?
>>94832892I'm an Imotekh fan boy, maybe check him out? He was my first deck and Black cards always seem to have the coolest art.
>>94832870Xyris is a token generator that works all on its own. Effect and payoff and draw all in one.And something like parallel lives in it is completely wasted.I'm not saying doublers should be cheaper than 4cmc but for 4 mana that's like 4 different combat tricks which would translate to like 12 more snakes and draws
>>94832900No, I don't think she needs one. Unless, for whatever reason you want to draw your entire deck.
>>94832913I think it depends on how you build Xyris in this case, anon. If you're doing Wheels and lots of extra draw, then doublers can be extremely good, but if you're going for a more stompy/combat way to force draw then I agree.
>>94832843EDH players are commonly picking cards for decks, not picking a deck for cards. The expense of the token doublers is probably because of the demand for them trying to run every once they can for their color.Timing being what it is and most of them being 4CMC and higher enchantments, you need to be ramping or cheating them out. I think on the high end you'll probably only be running Mondrak, Ocelots Pride, maybe Second Harvest for instant speed. Maybe Adrix and Nev if you're in Simic. Anything else can't possibly hit early enough or stick on the board well enough to work well without massive acceleration. Rhys maybe if you've got a wall of dorks or a discount. The gameplan isn't probably just going to be a wall of dudes new players under-invest in dealing with that, and that's just a backup plan to comboing off.
>>94832895>>94832913So it is more of a situation of either wanting your commander to payoff from the token generators in your deck or using things in your deck to pay off from your commander generating tokens? Makes sense seeing that your commander is a card you will always have in your opening hand.>>94832901Funny you mention him since I am working on a Necron list for 40k but he does seem interesting, not really wanting to do much graveyard stuff since I am working on a deck that focuses on that already thank you for the input though anon, the Necron precon does look pretty nice.
>>94832926Yeah fair. Xyris is such a fun build to try different ways there's so many impact tremor effects now he might as well be nekusar with access to green ramp
>>94832923I was considering Ojer-Taq because it makes her innate token generation way less shitty. 2 mana and 2 cards for a single tapped token sucks.
>>94832870just put them in, they are good for the "fun factor".in truth they just wont help you get your token production going in the first place, and are dead otherwise, and if they are working, they usually overshoot whats necessary to win.but thats just something to consider if you really want to optimize your list, for casual they are good enough, and its fun ooze out tokens
>>94831212How is this a human? It would immediately be slaughtered by any human faction on Innistrad.
>>94832938They even made mini-nekusar for Xyris' 99
>>94832940It could help, I suppose. I'd proxy it and try it out, but she's more or less just a draw engine that just so happens to make tokens. There are already so many zombie cards and other zombie token generators that you don't, or maybe shouldn't, be using her ability to try and mass generate tokens beyond an extra draw or two a turn, since you'll have more than enough other zombies to be drawing a stupid amount as is.
>>94832725Speaking of Ob Nixilis, doesn't Solphim anti-synergy with him due to him needing to deal exactly one damage?
About to proxy 1600 cards
>>94832966That's illegal.
>>94832989Call the copsI don't give a fuck
>>94832940I personally ended up cutting Ojer-Taq from my list for Varina so far (it isn't done) just due to sheer mana value vs what you're gonna get. 6 mana to put it down, then you have to either already control Varina or some other token generator to get use out of it. I kept Mondrak and Anointed for now, but even then, Zombies are so easy to get it isn't that bad.

>>94833336In legacy/modern, pox is a tempo deck. You hit people with a small pox, dark ritual out a liliana, hope they miss a land drop, then put them in the dirt with loam. In edh, you cast regular pox and combine it with additional stax effects to the same sort of goal. You want to destabilize your opponents, and either build up a combo while they recover, recur your resources asymetrically, or smack them in the mouth while their pants are down. Yawgmoth is good at this; proliferate smokestacl and tanglewire.
Recommendations of which cards to put from collection into the deck?

>>94833597Does pox target each player or each opponent typically? For example, does this have a place in a Pox deck?
