Don't worry, I have the sand. It is in a comically big tub.
The basing recipe is AK chocolate chipping as the brown dirt colour and a light drybrush of AK Light Earth.

>>
>>96448285
It actually is.
It also speaks volumes for how civilized WIP is compared to this place when one person throws a shitfit over being unable to find sand and is remembered forever.
Basically.
>years ago around Christmas time
>try to find sand
>can't
>go to WIP seeing red and half vent frustration and half ask for source on sand as I resigned to buy it online
>immortalized forever because one day I decided to post a model with a sand based base and someone connected the dots.
I'm perfectly fine with being laughed at about the story.
There are some persistent autists here that made me realize that while my story is technically embarrassing, it is not too terrible.

I can try finding the post in the archive. Wash is drying at the moment.

>SoB
Order of the Unremembered Saint is caught in the Imperium Nihilus, with no clue what has happened to the Astronomican, Blessed Terra or even the Emperor himself.
They have commandeered a few navy ships and are on a crusade to reforge the Imperium.
Mostly this amounts to extorting planets for supplies and kidnappings for recruits. All of which they justify to everyone and themselves as necessary to ensure their strength in these dark times.
However they still are ready to throw down with literally any threat, and many worlds do see them as angels sent by the Emperor when they've liberated the populous from xeno or chaos threats besieging them.
>AdMech
Forgeworld Galatea-X/V mostly just makes non-military hardware. They have a large robotics contingent which both defend the world from threats, as well as persue various interests off world.
>Tau
Bork'an Sept. I only recently started them and haven't got any lore.
>Nids
Hivefleet Simurgh is a splinter fleet that has a curious nature wherein a majority of the observed specimens have been winged strains.
Research is ongoing.

My LoV's goal is to become a complete monopoly. To that end, they've done several unorthodox things, like sit above a planet with a Genestealer Cult and harvest the chunks of hive fleet that come to claim the biomass.

MY GSC's goal is to evnetually find a way to kick the LoV off their planet so they can reunite with their star gods.

Hope you enjoy the nostalgia.
Not gonna lie I find that GW's basing colours are quite genius in the sense that there doesn't seem to be a colour scheme that doesn't "visually blur" with the webstore's default sand basing scheme.
I tried to find different colors and all I managed was just a slightly darker version. I'm thinking of using Gamer's Grass burned tufts to sell the wasteland look, but surprisingly green tufts also help as the brown color is pretty "natural."

As you might have heard, this month's theme is Kitbashing. The rules are that anything kitbashed is fair game, doesn't matter when you built it as long as you paint it this september.

Had the day off work so I got a start basecoating the Marine and the archon. I've got like 3 more coats of the flesh otherwise it comes across really streaky.
The Marine needs some gold touching up and I think I'm going to give him a bit of a nicer helm. I've got the angles and the pose right but I'm not sure what to do with the blood coming out of the Marine's head. Beacuse of this angle it'll go right into the power pack - maybe I model it at an angle so it looks like its being poked off? Or just get rid of the exit wound entirely.

it wouldn't be difficult to add internal grimdark
>the kin didn't survive the robot revolt of the daot by maintaining peaceful relations with their robots
>as a matter of fact, they didn't survive the daot at all
>instead the robots alone went in isolation and then eventually began cloning colonist servants anew, lying about their continued history and making them believe to be autonomous partners
>why? votann ships require psychic beacons to navigate realspace, the votann computers alone cannot produce these psychic beacons, so they produce clones, make them live and then sacrifice them to the votann to fuel the psychic beacons

plus you can turn their hypercapitalistic view of life to foster extreme internal competitions between guilds and leagues, as well as having the votann make them attack people not simply because it's in their best interests to do so to gain resources and get rich in the easiest of ways, but because the votann may demand conquest quotas, pushing the kindred to unsustainable rhythms casualties and to commit atrocities that they know are wrong and wouldn't want to do, even though they have lots of corporate mottos they can wear to pretend it's all ok

I'd say
>Have them dwarves, keep the idea of them being the "men of stones": a created race for and by the DAoT humans, who didn't survive.
>Go further on the "Clone kin" aspect, which explain why they're all similar, like dwarves are usually depicted (different but still within the same spectrum).
>Have this cyclic/practical relation with the ancestor cores: they're made by the core, they serve the core, the core serves them; it's obedience and tradition, unbreakable and unchanging, like dwarves.

I'd add what you suggested with the ancestor cores still making "flesh kins" because it needs them (and because it doesn't know what else to do, it's smart and can learn but not change its core (pun not intended)).

And now there is no "well we want it and we're strong so it's ours", instead it's effectively a prophecy of the ancestors, we follow the ancestor cores, doesn't mean they know why the cores say X or Y.

The basis of most of these is in their actual fluff if I remember correctly, so this is pushing them more to be space warhammer dwarves and not the space egalitarian capitalist miners they currently are.

TY for reading my insane ramblings.

I don't think that's a problem - a lot of people start small with kitbashing. A lot of people's first kitbash is just a headswap on a marine body, which is even less effort than turning an AoS/Fantasy Orc into a 40k Ork.
>>96448933
For people without access to 3D printers, that was often the next-best option for a plastic wing set that was easily available.
I don't think any kitbashing, even if small or low-effort is bad unless the person is bragging about their kitbashing or whatever, if the person can accept that what they did was basic/rudimentary, I see no issue. Most people will be kitbashing along similar lines, using similar kits anyway.

At testing phase.
I tried a few colors that were going to be a part of the palate. I feel a shiny black would treat the models appearance best. It gives a "chitanious" feel better than other colors. A shiny red could be anything but a shiny black feels like a beetle, so that we make the reference better.

Airbrush will be used for most things, I am contemplating markings and I'm going to abuse this test model when it dries.

Mostly because its a flexible model, and I want to see if the pain will chip off if the limbs bend first. I haven't mixed the topcoat stuff in yet just to see how a baseline performs.

Testing paint takes time with these fuggers. Wish I could just take all of them outside and just blast them. It would be a 170 model fuckup if I didn't test it first.

I miss 5th ed's vehicle damage charts, where hits that penetrated the armor had a good chance of one-shotting a tank (just like real life) whereas hits that damage but otherwise don't penetrate the armor could never destroy the vehicle, even added together, but could do stuff like destroy weapons, immobilize the tank, scare the crew, etc

Yes, I know Horus Heresy has a version of these rules, but hull points prevent vehicles from being able to be destroyed in a single penetrating hit like real life vehicles

>>96449557
NTA but I get his points, some older editions tried to do the best they could to simulate realism within an otherwise fantastical setting. 2nd edition probably did this the best overall, but other editions and particularly stuff like supplementary rules from Imperial Armour (with stuff like battle cannons being able to fire multiple types of shell) also tried. Tbh it never was great at simulating IRL small unit tactics, even basic stuff like Fire and Manuever, but I think an edition that did try to do that again and go even further would be based
>>
>>96449591
I think it's a good thing that insanely swingy stuff like that is gone, wounds is a fine abstraction that works well across all unit types. Game needs to be quicker to play and that means less flipping through pages of rulebooks and consulting esoteric charts.

I try and make fun rules and have only the fluff I need, I have a vague bible for inspiration/basis which I use to write PoV from characters.

Only say what you need to say and let people fill in the blanks.
It's a problem you see in most writings and it results in contradictions, wanking and fan disputes over canon.

Keep the scale to a human level.

For rules on a wargame, I keep things simple and consistent. Small granularity isn't that fun and when it is fun it's only with games involving fewers models, RPG-ish skirmishes.

Focus on fun and ease of use.
Keep re-rolls for rare crossroad moments: when the re-roll is important and both players' eyes scream to see what the die will decide.

Only add when it's positive, fun for all players, simplify when it helps.
>>
>>96449538
Fluffy rules are fun, and their presence doesn't necessarily mean that you can't have crunchy rules present as well. Same goes vice versa. If i had to pick one, personally i'd rather have the game work as seamlessly as it can, because nothing kills my immersion more than having to stop mid game and argue about gameplay. I can imagine all sorts of fluffy stuff for a crunchy rule, but I have a hard time trying to imagine how to make a fluffy rule more functional/balanced

Anon, hull points were originally made to give superheavies a place in the game and to buff glancing hits because retards kept bitching that an AT missile fired at less than 100m range at their precious tank "shouldn't one shot it," despite every AT missile being designed to do just that IRL. IRL, if a missile can't one-shot a tank, it can't destroy the tank, period. Pretty sure HH recently upping the ante and removing the vehicle explodes one shot rule is just them going further in that direction. on the other hand, like >>96449612 says, it was and would be extremely swingy, so from a gameplay balance perspective I get it. But I also understand the urge to go "to hell with balance, make 40k more like historicals so my battles can be accurate to the lore," but that's a tall order considering no edition (save like, 1e and 2e since the rules were the main lore reference and having rpg-lite rules) has ever been close to replicating battles in the lore. To my knowledge, only Epic Armageddon from like, 2004 does the best job at that. Oh, and Necromunda. And Adeptus Titanicus. And Aeronautica, before they scrapped that.

I'd like if you could have a unit do suppressing fire if they had a high enough rate of fire on their weapons

Nonsense anon! Don't you remember the textbooks? In early to mid 20th century warfare, armies just clustered together around their commanders for aura benefits and then huddled around over predetermined "objective zones" about 30m wide. Whoever squatted on these objective zones the longest wins the battle. This is all fought within a space of around 100m featuring a bunch of L-shaped ruins, of course. Doing otherwise would be a war crime.

>"no it fucking isn't"
>everyone fights using variations of modern warfare tactics ranging from the 19th century up to maybe the gulf war if you count the Tau with scifi gimmicks tacked on

The only reason you wouldn't know this is if you've never studied up on modern warfare tactics (which date back to the 19th century). Marines for example rely on combined arms tactics and maneuver warfare, but this isn't actually simulated in the rules because the rules want you to blob up and pretend you're playing some weird version of Dawn of War instead of actually simulating any form of tactics beyond "weird shit the rules let me get away with that somehow helps me win but would never ever work IRL"

Like, lorewise the most outlandish it gets is the focus on melee combat, but even then we have plenty of examples like WW1 and late 19th century warfare that have plenty of guns and plenty of melee combat thrown in.

I mean, older editions with the rules trying to replicate realism to a limited extent within its extremely fantastical setting kind of ironically made it feel more honest about what it is: Playing with toys.

>"My lascannon fires at your leman russ's frontal armor! Hit! Penetrating hit, shit that's rare, requires a six...rolled another six, EXPLODES RESULT!!"
>"WOAHHHH MY TANK EXPLODED, I fire my mortars at the guys on the objective."
>"My guys are running away, oh no!!"

vs the rules we have now which feel more like trying to simulate a balanced video game on the tabletop. Which just means it plays like an extremely slow video game

>>
>>96449862
>to appeal to zoom zoom Gen z betas
no, it was because the previous system was consistently rendering tanks more frail than monsters and because gw released a bunch of units that blurred the line between monster and walker tank, and rules creep asked for more and more to be statted as monsters instead of tanks.

removing armor values wasn't to appeal to anyone, it was gw giving up on a system they broke and couldn't fix

If you paint the cartridges as glowing coils, it'll sell the idea of an energy weapon. A second barrel would help with it being more volkitey. The weapons have two barrels (you can see on various weapon a gap in the middle of the barrel portion) that combine the beam to a single one at the muzzle. There's examples of volkites without the muzzle part, showing two separate barrels.

Yes. When you include a Technomancer into a Canoptek Wraith, it becomes infantry, beasts and character. So even if the Wraiths don't have infantry keyword, things like Anti-Infantry or other stuff that targets infantry would work against them. Or allow you to put 6 wraiths into a Night Scythe because it can carry an Infantry Unit and they're infantry now and suddenly there are 6 of them on your deployment zone in turn one.

And since 10e doesn't have the problems of 8e or 9e it looks like it's going to be the forever edition like D&D 5e is for D&D and is thus safe from edition updates. Would've been a good opportunity to port over HH to 10th for increased success given that 10th is the most successful edition of 40k

11th edition? Why would they make an 11th edition when 10th edition is the most popular edition of 40k and doesn't have the problems 8e and 9e had during its lifespan? 8e and 9e became broken, which is why they got replaced. I wasn't around for 7th ed but I've heard 8th ed was made because 7th was shit from the start. 10th isn't in that state, an edition change isn't warranted. Why would they do that? All they'd do is alienate their existing playerbase with rules changes instead of encouraging long term system mastery and homebrew.

It's starting to look like a pretty active thread. Why does this upset you? Why are you reflexively defensive of 40k, even when the criticisms are entirely legitimate?

Face it: 40k is irredeemable shit, and its players are garbage with no regard for hobbyism, narrative, or military simulation. GW is a company with contempt for the integrity of its intellectual properties, and which has cultivated an abusive relationship with its customers. It's time to move on.

I was actually YOU all along anon. I was assuming your identity and acting like a big fat faggot. But nobody in your life noticed a difference.

Fun fact;
Daemonettes existed during the War In Heaven. This implies that Slaanesh predates his own birth, and specifically had a hand in influencing the events of the War In Heaven.
We can thus see that, logically, the Fall of the Eldar was planned very far in advance.
It has also been revealed that when the Emperor dueled Horus, reality broke and allowed the Chaos Gods to insert themselves into existence at the dawn of time.
We now can view the Fall of the Eldar with an added perspective; Slaanesh destroyed the Eldar so that the Imperium could rise, thus allowing the Heresy to happen and fulfilling the loop in time allowing Chaos to exist eternally.
This also implies that Slaanesh could likely have ended the Eldar at any point in time, but chose to do so specifically to allow the Emperor to rise.
So we can conclude that the 'Sixty million years' that the Eldar ruled the galaxy was actually a time where Chaos specifically cultivated the Eldar to hold dominance until the Emperor was ready.
The Eldar were pawns and sacrificial lambs all along.

I disagree, legends is a retarded bandaid fix. Gw is only doing it to units or upgrades that do not have kits, the theory is that they will be eventually released in campaign books as the edition moves along.

All in all this is just geedubs being incredibly greedy when their own use of "red tape" to try and prevent people from running units that they cannot buy directly from warhammer. Hell if you want a really good example of legends being greed look at old world, only reason that happened because again, gw wants you to have a separate army per system. How is Combat Patrol as a format for introducing new players? I have 2 friends starting to collect and it looks like an easy way to quickly get a game going without having to help them build a list
>>
>>96451784
its clunky and badly balanced
boarding actions is much more playable and you could easily get a patrol box and use the models in BA with some cheap wall terrain/cardboard set up (can't field vehicles/huge units that are in some combat patrol boxes though)
>>
>>96451784
It's fine for teaching totally new players the very basics, but I'd move on to 1k point games as quickly as possible to get a better format.
>>
>>96451796
>>96451819
Appreciate it. Was originally leaning towards doing a few Combat Patrol games so that they get a handle on the basic rules and then help them get to 1k points so that they can use more stuff. Not surprised that Combat Patrol isn't very balanced or good since the actual boxes vary wildly. I'll look into Boarding Action as well and see what I can do with that.
