Anyone else thinking about the new Ravenguard set?

TQ:Honestly, I'm just as much into M:tG (kinda burned out on current formats, but still strong with EDH) and Lorcana as a tabletop sport.

>DURRRRRRRR YOU CAN'T EXPECT REALISM IN SPACE FANTASY

The point is trying to have points of realism within the space fantasy, anon, because you can't expect me to believe that tanks have literal health bars and people squat on objective markers for victory points in the actual setting, anon. That would be retarded. AT weapons should still be good KILLING tanks, not just "wounding" them over time and doing chip damage that eventually kills them (since that's not how RL tanks work). Maneuver tactics that are explicitly mentioned in lore should work on the tabletop. The ideal tactic shouldn't be blobbing your dudes up around characters for aura bonuses and employing "GOTCHA" card game strategems, it should be actual maneuver tactics. Fucking Gaunt's Ghosts features the ghosts employing basic fire and maneuver tactics (you pin those guys down, we'll flank them and shoot them up close and from the side), which isn't encouraged by the rules and provides zero benefit.

The tabletop should be a simulation of the lore, not an extremely slow version of a vidya game that feels extremly artificial. Abstraction only does so much, especially at 28mm heroic scale.

This really sums up the problem with how 40k handles tanks, when you can't use an armored transport vehicle in the manner that they are intended to be used,. ie moving troops across open ground. If the tank is just laying in cover and bunny hopping from cover to cover you might as well just get rid of it and have the troops laying behind cover.
40k fails to meaningfully utilize different types of units in the manner that they should realistically operate. Instead every single unit functions the exact same way, bunny hop from L.shaped ruin to L shaped ruins

It's not about realism it's about not looking like shit. Also this is literally a car in lotr because fantasy tier argument.

>>
>>96452411
Because it's not the designers' fault that WAACfags will always abuse rules. What is the designers' fault is bowing to them and focusing on shaving all of the fluff out of the rules. Ironically, tournaments became too big for their own good. GW should have simply held the stance that the game is never going to be perfectly balanced because it needs that little bit of wiggle room to be fun and thematic. What I think they could do is focus on mission layouts and objective scoring to help keep the game balanced, like has been done in Starcraft of all things.
>>
>>96452532
They are trying their very best
>>
>>96452532
Tanks need to use cover IRL too. They're not magically invulnerable.
>>
>>96452550
>I JUST FUCKING SAID IT WAS MEANT TO BE ARCADEY

Can you not fucking read? I'm not saying it's simulationist, I'm saying it's more simulationist than fucking 10th edition because at least the weapons on vehicles have to face the direction of the unit they're shooting at to fire at them. At least cover actually means something ingame. At least everything isn't L-shaped ruins and seeing who can squat on pie plate objectives the longest. At least an entire unit don't get to be shot at (or shoot at other units) because one dude's toe is sticking out from behind a building. Granted, you're fighting over retarded requisition points and basebuilding, but the point remains.

Continuing, my point is that the nonsensical video-gamey nature of dawn of war, which isn't accurate at all to the fluff and was ORIGINALLY far more arcade-y than 40k proper at the time, is now slightly less arcade-y and game-y than fucking 10th edition. That's the state of the game.

well, depending on what qualifies as a kitbash to the standards of the challenge, i've got a couple in mind. I've got something thatI built as a wolfguard battle leader, or the free model of the month Blood Claw from last month. unless kitbashed squads are also acceptable, I've got a couple Grey Hunter packs I really need to work on that could also qualify.

the Battle Leader would go alongside my termy wolf lord, the blood claw would be good practice for the rest of the project, and the grey hunters would be good practice /and/ be more progress towards completion

I had a tournament this weekend, and it sure was something (Blood Angels). It was a regional affair, but still among some very competitive players. A real test of generalship. I won some, lost a couple, but pulled through in the finals and won the trophy.

Pretty proud of it, and I can't help but notice everyone else was also impressed. I even messaged some old friends from school about it, though I haven't heard back from them yet. I also told my parents, but they just shook their heads and looked disappointed.

Anyways, looking forward to some more riveting tablesports and Warhammer® action!

Are the T'au auxilery ship navigators using the Astronomicon to navigate? Do the T'au expand using Imperial infrastructure that is literally the Emperor.

>>
>>96454610
They don’t use navigators or the astronomicon, they use the same technique humans used when there wasn’t an astronomicon, turning warp travel into a series of short controlled jumps. It’s slower than the standard imperial method but safer and more reliable

Something can be fantastical to our own world but grounded within its own setting anon. “Soft” fantasy systems don’t lend themselves well to wargames, which you either need a simulationist (for those who enjoy history, creative writing, etc) approach or a gameist approach (for people who enjoy cards against humanity and the like)

You don’t need the exact dimensions of a heavy tank’s armor to know that it should behave like a tank and not a big blob of flesh
>>
>>96454712
But they aren't. That's a gross simplification and make sit obvious that you're just looking to play a WW2 wargame and are trying to Hamfist the most ppoular game to fit your needs
>>
>>96454739
They largely are anon, they provide a realistic jumping off point to explore more fantastical creatures and weaponry. Because at the end of the day the fiction says little laser rifles and tank cannons can kill other dimensional daemons
>>
>>96454738
Instead it should completely ignore how ballistics work at an angle and treat every attack as if it's a direct blow? That's not very realistic anon.
>>
>>96454750
Did people run around with flak armour and laser guns in WW2 anon?
>>
>>96454753
I do miss armor facing, minor differences in elevation are handled by the abstraction of To Hit and To Wound (previously penetrate). I remember older version of cities of death would give bonuses to shooting from a higher elevation
>>
>>96454759
Laser guns that are fired like semi automatic rifles and kill a man in one or two hits like a normal gun, flak armor that provides little real protection like the normal lack of armor. Base them on more modern militaries if you like, but the fiction has them employ tactics similar to 1941 era Soviets despite their tech and equipment
>>
>>96454768
>and kill a man in one or two hits like a normal gun
That depends on what media, by what author and when it was made.
>>
>>96454786
Much like real life, some men die to a single shot to a leg, others can be riddled by shrapnel and survive. Simulationist doesn’t mean creating hyper intricate tables for every single minor detail, you aren’t rolling to die of malnutrition with your conscripts. It just means getting a sense of the setting and trying to portray it in a fun to play way. Problem is fighting over infinite symmetrical haphazard imperial ruins over random circles doesn’t evoke the feeling of 40K, and it looks like crap too.
>>
>>96454768
I'd like to see a modern body armour tank a shot from an autocannon. We can barely give basic scopes to all our troops and lasguns come with built in scopes.
>the fiction has them employ tactics similar to 1941 era Soviets
Asymmetric guerrilla warfare? Armoured flanking? Mechanized infantry? Orbital drop troops? These the tactics 1941 Soviets used? Because they're the tactics IG uses, despite what the memes tell you.
>>
>>96454796
No some sorces describe las fire like it's a .22, while others describe it like a .100 musket ball. It's not a small difference. People keep fighting after taking a .22, a .100 musket ball will always be a soldier down, if not dead, then completely incapacitated because he is down a limb.
>>96454801
>Asymmetric guerrilla warfare
>Armoured flanking
>Mechanized infantry
>These the tactics 1941 Soviets used?
Yep... well, maybe not mechanized infantry quite yet, but the US, Germany and UK all had APCs, and the Soviets bought American APCs in substantially number before the end of WWII.
>Orbital drop troops?
What's the real diffrence between an orbital drop pod and paradrop? The material diffrences must be minimal.
>Because they're the tactics IG uses, despite what the memes tell you.
Surely this would depend heavily on the unit of IG we are talking about.

All of these will knock out a man in a shot or two, just as las fire is described in the imperial primer. It’s consistent and internally realistic, while also providing a good base for simulationist design

not possible while playing the rules as written in any edition of the game currently. you'd need to play the game Kriegsspiel style with a referee that interrupts orders from two players or teams of players during the game with the actual rules of the game using something like a 40k version Chain of Command instead.

note that playing Kriegsspiel outside of its original context of an officer training tool requires MASSIVE amounts of autism, so it isn't really available as an option for most people.
