Gotta say its funny that Wizards obviously thought Mavel was going to be THE UB set. Not only they accepted the horrible deal with disney that they can't use anything Marvel in online-game clients, but they also already have a bunch of Marvel sets planned (we know this because of the Infinity Stones presumably being one per set). Meanwhile by this point in its spoiler season, FF was already the best selling MTG set OF ALL TIME. Sure wish you had made a bunch of FF sets or other collaborations with SE instead huh, you dumb fucks. Capeshit hasn't been relevant for half a decade
>>96470280I don't think that at all or they would have designed it for their most popular format.
>>96470280Even better how the first set is Spider Man so like half the creatures have the spider type so you get shit like this.
>>96470280If the FF set had zero commander decks and was an aftermath set changed in the middle of production, it would have flopped.
>>96470280Nobody in my circle seems to care about it. People seem to be more excited about Avatar.
>>96470323No one I know cares about either since neither are popular IPs
>>96470295He calls himself Captain Universe. The story where he got the powers is called the Cosmic Spider-Man Saga or something like that, but he wasn't just called Cosmic Spider-Man. But I don't read much Dan Slot and try to forget what I have read of his work so maybe that wasn't the case in the few appearances this version of Spider-Man had before he jobbed. Still however, card should be called Captain Universe.
>>96470295Fat Zur and the Giga Spider
>>96470280On paper Marvel is the property that would have had the widest possible appeal. That the movies exist means the franchise has some roots and tendrils in mainstream notice. It makes sense that Wizards would have thought that would translate into new sales and new players. Break them into an untapped market. It makes sense that they'd think Marvel would be the more profitable franchise rather than Final Fantasy. However it's clear Wizards didn't take into account the possible overlap that would exist between people who play video games and people who play card games and how much profit there was to make there. Regardless of how this Avatar and Spider-Man / Marvel thing do I imagine we'll be getting either more Final Fantasy or see them trying some other noteworthy video game series.
>>96470323I think part of the problem is set identity. Spiderman is full of mechanics involving throwing cards back into your hand or out of your graveyard, which means like most any legendary with that shit on it is going to be 99 fodder unless it's specifically juiced for the command zone. The rest is niche singles.Maybe the limited environment might be cool, but I don't frankly like spiderman enough to play a prerelease or draft of all these spidermen and/or spiderwomen. So basically this is like EoE for commander, but even worse because they have no precons to slap down on a table.
>>96470323Do you play formats besides commander? Because this is the least commander focused set I have seen in years. Goes out of its way to make cards unplayable in the format.
>>96470352Yeah and Zodiark is astrally-aspected, they don't fucking care.
>>96470280>>96470359There's also the issue that the marvel crossover is frankly, half a decade, or more, too late. Marvel struggled to find its footing after Endgame, moved onto floundering a few years ago, and has only been going downhill since. Occasionally you will get a movie that actually does well (Which are coincidentally, pretty much always spider-man movies) but trying to squeeze multiple sets out of a dying franchise is going to end up biting Hasbro in the ass. Hard.
>>96470466What a dumb post.
>>96470466Yes. We're seeing the consequences of these deals apparently taking several years to pan out. Odds are this deal was initiated earlier when the franchise had just seen it's largest high and had only started to decline. I don't think Wizards had any idea how much the franchise would sink afterwards. That being said, Spider-Man is a strong enough name it may still pan out for them. It may even be why they lead with Spider-Man instead of a general Marvel themed set.
>>96470480Yeah, I'm not going all doom and gloom for spidey, since he's more or less Marvel's Batman. Somehow able to make money no matter what they throw at the fucker.Everything that follows? Probably not gonna be worth the licensing fee. Especially if they made the terrible decision to try and focus on post-endgame marvel stuff, which they're likely contractually obligated to do.Ya think Hasbro would've learned from Star Wars but... ah well!
>>96470490I guess it depends on what aspects they focus on. If they break these up by theme or not. I imagine they could still get some mileage out of an X-Men themed set for instance. By the time they get to something Avengers themed enough time would have probably passed that it would be nostalgic for some which could also get some extra push. It looks like Spider-Man is designed as the introductions hook set to get new players with it's intro decks and the like. I'd assume the next Marvel sets will feel more like full sets instead of the micro sets this one is seemingly shaping up to be.
>Want to make a commander deck out of the old premium sliver deck I found>Figure I'll make it cheap, just get the bare necessities and a few big cards>end up spending a total of 200€ on cardsFuck. Well, just missing gravemother and queen from the collection, and I need to find a thrumming hive pool sometime. The sliver version of kindred dominance is metal as hell. Had to grab one when I found out about it.
>>96470508The issue is that, while marvel definitely has a dedicated audience, it's not a "Multiple sets" level of dedicated audience. The heydey of the avengers movies is long over, and they not only utterly failed to permanently capture that audience to any degree, but from what I've heard, pissed off their core demographic and caused that to wither away. The audience that Hasbro though they'd be tapping into when they signed those contrats just... flat out doesn't exist anymore. And since they basically gave disney everything they wanted, I wouldn't be surprised if the representation of the X-Men would be kept to an absolute minimum
kinda niche and shit but think he might be fun? looking at random obscure commanders to spice it up
>>96470280>FF is the best selling magic set of all timeThats fucking depressing. Could it be that the Pokémon scalpers have also hit MtG now? - aside from FF being huge in Asia
>>96470531haha no
>>96470280FF did well because FF boomers hardly have anything to spend money on anymore unless they play XIV. meanwhile, the entire planet has been experiencing marvel/capeshit fatigue for years now. it also helps that FF fits fairly well with MTG aesthetics from 10 years ago, so it isn't that offensive to see in the game for enfranchised players as opposed to a teenager in spandex swinging through manhattan on a card. i doubt FF would have STAYED successful. if they printed multiple FF crossover sets they would have done worse every time as the FF boomers stopped caring.>>96470534scalpers have been hitting mtg for years, bud. the reason FF did so well is because FF boomers are starved for things to spend money on while being older and having more disposable income for stupid shit.
>>96470531not enough flanking to make him worth it. Go for this guy instead if you want obscure combat keywords and interactions
>>96470543fuck ye youre right there is a shockingly low amount of flanking creatures in red, thats a shame i really like his art

>>96470594I would love to, but all the other games are competitive 1v1s which I am not interested in and even if I were their playerbase is miniscule compared to MtG and especially Commander so it'd be me pissing into the wind trying to convince my friends to start a pod or finding non-annoying nerds to play with in my (relatively) small city.MtG was the first and its playerbase is captured due to sunk cost and trying to make cardboard their investments so there will never be a true competitor to jump ship to even if they have great game design. I've long come to peace with this, but that doesn't stop the fact the lands system of generating mana is the worst possible way to do it and was an exceptionally stupid design decision.
>>96470644
>>96470256Do you want tribes that will actually get regular updates and can win?>humans elves goblins merfolk zombies dragons Do you want tribes that are soulful and have enough good cards that they're viable even though they rarely get updates and those they get usually suck?>faeries vampires angels werewolves plants/fungus/saprolings sea creatures

>>96470677is big angels any good or is it just suboptimal reanimator
>>96470644The land system is literally why I play the game. Without lands, you get shit like YuGiOh. Do you have any suggestions for something better or just pitching? Have you done any research on resource systems for other games that would work? Or are you just crying about lands? Because no one wants your tears.
>>96470644There's a lot that goes into why lands work well as a system and if your claim is that it is "the worst" there is no point in having a discussion about it.The only thing that is strictly annoying about lands is how WOTC is on a quest to take some really nice lands and to NOT FUCKING PRINT THEM.
>>96470378Well they doubly fucked up because all I've read and heard about UB from non-Commander players is how much they hate UB coming into Standard and Modern and they blame Commander for being the source of UBshit (they're not wrong). So WOTC is being especially retarded trying to aim UB at non-Commander formats.
>>96470681It's always good with Giada or Kaalia.
>>96470689You are in a bubble
>>96470683>>96470680This Anon's suggestion >>96470603 is fun and simple, though it's just pitch that goes back into the library instead of a side stack. Mana flooding/screw is simply something that shouldn't exist, I've never once ever seen anyone at the table enjoy when it happens and there is absolutely nothing you can do to ensure it never happens even if you math out the optimal amount of lands in your deck. It's just shit design period. Even sacred Garfield admits its bad and dumped it for his later designs.
>>96470677not that anon, but i am currently in the process of building a clerics and angels deck. there is enough mechanical overlap between the two that i think i can get away with a janky build. still trying to decide if i should go orzhov or if i should go mardu.>orzhovhighest density of meaninful clerics and angels. would either play firja because she is card advantage and she is both of the tribes i want to put in the deck OR i would play burakos+folk hero for card advantage and ramp.>mardukaalia is a cleric and she cheats costs on angels. lots of good boros angels, too. some interesting clerics with the addition of R.
>>96470681It's not even suboptimal reanimator, it's just suboptimal period. There is very little synergy among angels. They are wildly overcosted. They heavily lean toward monowhite so its going to be a very slow deck. They're not stompy enough to be a real threat even if you have 3 or 4 out. Most of their abilities aren't good. There's only a handful of generally good angels out there and most of those are very outdated. Just compare any of them to what a monored or monogreen Dragon player gets to bring to the table, nevermind how much support 2+ color dragon decks get. At this point even birds are better, thanks to the numerous excellent birb tribal cards FF gave and how often we get a good new bird card in sets.
>>96470715I like the design space and deckbuilding questions that lands create, the ability for your mana base to do other stuff. Yeah it sucks to flood or screw but ultimately lands are just more interesting than a guaranteed mana system is.t. hearthstone zoomer
>>96470731I use Esika because it hurts too much to leave out Sigarda and Shalai and green just has too many borderline necessary tools to make pure Angel decks viable. There's no better feeling than t4/5 Defense of the Heart going off and being able to dump Sephara and Avacyn onto the table and watching everyone scramble to find an exile effect.
>>96470677I was thinking something like the latter, something that can win and plays well, preferably 2-3 colors but I hope they're not locked being one color pair.
I can't wait to make money selling photos.
>>96470748i want the clerics in there too, though. i almost would prefer a pure clerics deck, but it isn't totally viable yet, so having a crossover between the two tribes is fun. it is hardly a competitive deck, but i like to have decks that i can face against newbies with precons.
>>96470683Not him but didn't hearthstone literally solve this by just giving you one more "land" per turn? That does seem superior to what we have

>>96470777This, WOTC solved this problem themselves two decades ago. You just play your card upside down as your land for the turn. The game is dead in the west though, and I don't think it has a digital client.

Final Fantasy was already in the purview of people who have played magic before. A mistake a lot of boomers and midwit marketing people make is looking at the success of one thing and then assuming the crossover will happen without understanding why it will happen other than "X things is popular and seems like X people do both things". The number of normtards who will spend 20 bucks to see a movie or Mom's buying their kids shit from Target doesn't translate to a card game like Magic. Magic cards haven't become status symbols like Pokémon cards have. Normies want to talk about their headcannon and "bro who would win" debates. Not play magic. Little kids aren't going to buy a random single with a Spiderman character on it like they do Pokémon cards they like. The mainstream appeal of capeshit doesn't translate. The set will still do well but the larger normie audience was never there to begin with.
>>96470819Is this supposed to be a good artist?
>>96470680Dragonball Super's TCG has the best system I've seen. Each turn you pick one of your cards in hand to use as energy, and it produces energy of whatever color the card is. So you're never screwed or flooded, you just have to decide which card is least valuable at the time. There's single and multi-colored cards so you have a lot of options.
Going to play this to troll, I love this card and commander is the only format I would ever play it in
There are downsides to Magic's mana system but people really underestimate how much it contributes to the game. To begin with it means decks can play different amounts of lands, which creates a fundamentally different experience than you would get in a different game. That is also true for colors and how many colors to play/how a manabase is constructed. You might splash white in your RB deck for one card so play few sources, and so on. More controversially, people underestimate how much they enjoy the inherent randomness of lands. Both because it builds in variance so they don't have to add more of it to cards like Hearthstone, and the randomness itself. Coming back when you started off manascrewed is one of the peak experiences in magic, learning how to play when constrained by mana, learning how to build and play to mitigate flood, etc. tl:dr players are idiots and don't know what they want. There is a reason nothing dethrones Magic

>>96470715>pitch cost with literally no downsideAbsolutely terrible lmao. The entire point of a pitch cost is you are making decisions. You have taken all the decision making out of it for a fucking baby game lmao
>>96470852Yugioh, magic's card design is already at that point so it would be right at home :^)Unironically though. You could translate in a ton of cool mechanics and cards between the two like anon's magical hats from last thread, gold sarcophagus could be a 3 step saga, you could make some meld cards of fusion monsters (IMAGINE a 3 part meld card for blue eyes ultimate dragon that has 3 seperate "blue eyes, [epithet]"s or maybe have a "polymerization, [epithet]" as a sorcery that counts for 2 part meld card to stretch it a little.)I'm not going to pretend I know anything beyond boomer shit for yugioh though. >>96470444Zodiark is stll umbral. The detail about color theory instead of alignment charting in ShB was one of Ishikawa's dumbest contributions to the story and one of the times she tries to over explain things the players don't actually care about to the detriment of the overall narrative. We've already been given an emotional reason to want to bring the night sky back and we already know the light as it is in the First is not good and needs to be dealt with. Attempting to shoddily re-explain a magic system that has been with us since 1.0 just to make Urianger come to the same conclusion we've already gotten to wasn't worth the headache. It would have done less harm to the magic system to just say the combinations of elements into light or dark can be either umbral or astral based on how they're manipulated since we already understood astral and umbral were descriptors for things like eras. She did this whole dumb universal mechanics thing again with dynamis, one of the worst additions to any fiction I've ever come across. So if the revelation was that light/dark could be either, Zodiark is Darkness-Umbral. He's comprised of all the elements and is trying to hold the laws of the planet's magic together after they were ripped apart by the Final Days. Bahamut would be an example of Darkness-Astral since he's a ferocious beast of pure magic with summoned instincts to destroy everything he sees. So if the Magic team didn't give enough of a shit to say "ackshually Zodiark is technically Astral since he's comprised of many colors mixing into black" they're more like the playerbase than not.

>>96473566Someone based, hybrid mana is cool as fuck.If you mean how it's organized it's based on the WUBRG color order from and has basically always been the rule. Using this card as an example.Blue comes before black so the hybrid mana has the top-left as blue and the bottom-right as black. It's an inbetween of blue and black so it goes before the black pip.Black pip is next in wuBrg.Then similar to the first hybrid mana black is before red so it's split left to right accordingly and the placed after the black.Think of hybrid mana symbols like half steps between WUBRG.Enemy color pairs are a little funky and they go by which direction on the wheel is a shorter distance and attempt to skip a color but organized similarly based on the left most color in hybrid like pic.Red comes before green in wubRG so it comes before the green pip.Very early on in the game they just did whatever and in rare cases like cpt. america they reorganize them for flavor reasons.

>>96473831>graveyard hate belongs only to whitenigga
>>964737763 damage is nothing in commander, its why the modern horizon MDFCs are pretty much auto includes in any deck. While I do like being able to cast my spells, if you make trilands too free then the downside of 4c/5c basically evaporate. >>96473966Actually excellent for my Katilda human tribal deck. I will however be proxying a much better art version.
>>96473990This
>>96474594Just wait for the UW version from Arena
Why does WOTC shove maskwood nexus into so many precons
>>96469778Please share list when you're done, this is based
>>96474734Timmy likes tribal.
>>96474528I constantly list things on facebook marketplace that I don't actually own because I think it's funny how desperate people can be to pick up overpriced shitI listed a serialized chocobo for $250 and you wouldn't believe the messages I got. People can be really desperate. Especially foreigners.
>>96474703do they ever put out the art from arena only cards in decent sizes?
>>96474734>4 precons in the last 3 yearsHuh, I had no idea
>>96470819>Glossy red of the building blending with the webbing, and suitLooks organic, and alien, fucking sick.
>>96474304MY HERO
>>96474802Literally never unless the artist themselves post the art.
>>96473996It still happened though
>>96474744>>96474805The worst offender is eternal might. There's like 6 non zombies out of 35 creatures, and half of them embalm/eternalize back as zombies already:https://moxfield.com/decks/XrG-Ct9Mx0SZxXKayAp09w
>won 3 out of 6 with anons odric build half of the time he draws like shit and gets manascrewed, but the upside is that nobody ever targets my shit because of the infallible "hurr durr it's just a bunch of 1/1 who cares"-defense
>>96474738Sure thing Hoss, hopefully I'll have a rough list tomorrow. Not sure how hard I want to go on artifacts. Might add a small cheerios package. Free flicker targets to poop out seems pretty cool.
The color identity rule is unironically the only thing that stops 90% of decks from looking exactly the same regardless of commander, because colorfixing has become so easy it's a non-issue to play 5c.
>>96474925I bullied an odric player so hard he stopped showing up to the LGS
>>96475015ban all staples
This card seems nice, I'm shocked they never printed something like this before
>>96475105Damn... this is so broken. With this and the spot removal... this set is going to get banned in all the formats..
I want to build this little nigga, but there are only like ten moogles. Relying on his tokens is just too slow :(
>>96475121he cute :)
>>96475121shapeshifters are exactly to support your shitty tribe (it will still suck)
spiderbros
>>96475121this is exactly why this one shits moogles out
What are some good chaos cards and stax like teferi's puzzle box that would work well with this magnificent bastard?
>>96473666universes beyond doesn adhere to colorpie rules
>>96475121He makes the tokens before buffing
>>96475105Art so badass I thought it was Todd McFarlane- but instead it's that faggot ripoff artist Erik Larsen
>>96475105Just realized his right pec is so much smaller than his left pec. The anatomy is horrible but somehow it's still badass
>>96475206We did get some Todd art.
What fucking compels a motherfucker to play fucking solitaire with himself for 75% of our game, not realizing that everyone else has already checked out and not really caring what he does because he's combo is so slow and doesn't affect us, to then be like if we want to play another game against his solitaire deck.
>>96475221>attacking>tapped>sliversJust bullshit how there's no generic "your creatures have deathtouch" card. Would be so good for shit like that
>>96475254I'm so tilted and tired I can't even word good
>>96475254A desire to assert their intellectual superiority over the table.
>>96475258There are three cards that do this and one can even be your commander UBTourist.
>>96475221Classic art wasted on a shit card. They should have saved this for a pushed face commander
>>96475258Does this count?
>>96475263He was pretty much just talking to himself while the rest of us was pretty much just talking about everything else, he didn't seem to mind. Just annoying not to be able to play a game because someone needs to combo off to get off.
>>96475254>What compels someone to want to spend more time making decisions than spending more time waiting for someone else to figure out if they should play Craw Wurm or Colossal DreadmawA real mystery.
>>96475221That's not a big bulge...
>>96474304I see what he did there
>>96475254Maybe put interaction in your deck anon
I need to build an aggro deck as my next commander. I am tired of watching the green players ramp and everyone just sits and watch.

>>96474429>here's a bacteria that makes people hate Mutantsretarded, how are you supposed to develop a character what that?
>>96475526It's more that it exacerbates existing xenophobia, I think. Anybody who's already accepting of others will not really be affected, but somebody who might be a bit suspect will go full "they shouldn't be around".
>>96475494she cutesure, you can rule 0 her
>>96475254Stupid people equate winning magic with high IQ. Even stupidier people bring that attitude to casual games. You can win games pretty easily if you don't care about making the game interesting so there ya have it. Someone who wants to assert dominance in a casual setting. Luckily these players tend to actually be pretty dumb so out playing them isn't hard but avoiding them in the future is even easier.
>>96475415Balance shouldnt be considered mld for this purpose
>>96475532Damn son, I'm glad I never cares about that shit outside of the cartoon lol
>>96475591I equate winning at magic with a credit card
>>96475624Allow me to introduce you to rdw from literally any formst with a legitimate competitive scene
>>96475591I like to assert my intellectual superiority by defeating the control and combo pseuds using short turns and as few cards as necessary to do the deed. Combat damage and direct damage are my preferred methods of winning, nothing makes a pseud with a $2000+ deck angrier than losing to combat damage.

Is it normal for the oval hologram things on cards to be off center or sometimes not a perfect oval?
>>96475843Not unless you get your cards from china
>>96475843yes it happens. your card is not a gem mint 10, its basically toilet paper

>>96475988I noticed a few also had the tiniest of specks of black (like if the black top layer of the card that acts as a window to the oval wasn't perfect) too. Is that something that happens? I'm just trying to make sure I somehow didn't end up with fakes.

>>96476085Correct.
>>96476045They're not fakes. Bootlegs are far more consistent with their holos than mass printed official cards. Fact is WOTC hires their printing out to the lowest bidder and newer cards are a fucking mess of consistency.
