Alright, Do you allow romance or no?
>>96485231No
First time DMing, using Foundry. Are maps such as this too cramped for 5 level 2 players?
>>96485231Romance doesn't belong in D&D.
>>96485485Cramped rooms are fine. Then your melee dudes can plant their fat asses in front of the backline.
>>96485231Always, in fact I encourage it. >>9648549Faggot
Would creating a table for items that the thief could get when stealing mid-combat with fast hands so it would become a sort of bread and butter for combat be a horrible idea? Would be like a cool little slot machine mini game. Could add some detrimental ones like too.

i see the fucking OP is still owning you with satanic tarotic magic and no wonder why so many of you have trouble sleeping at night ! i tried a long time ago to put an end to this charade but the moderators put me out and OP brigaded my home address to keep my internet from working properly for months. well im back and im not going to let this one slide, not after what i know you did OP.this is a satanic thread trying to impose itself in the dungeons and dragons universe, what OP is actually doing is performing a long ritual by manipulating you into posting in conformance with the expectations of his ritual by aligning your doomed souls to the satan ic traot, thujs ensuring he harvests your energy and life seed from you while youj are sepnt in captivity in the min d. do not feed OP do not engage with him
>>96485177How do I convince someone (myself) that the advantage / disadvantage mechanic isn't pure liquid shit?
>>96485637It works better than having to add a load of modifiers that you aren't going to remember, while you hold up the entire table and interrupt the flow of the game just so you can make a roll that you're probably going to fail anyway. The ADV/DISADV streamlines it and allows the game to flow better. You're welcome to play by yourself with an Excel file if that's too much for you and you prefer wasting everyone's time with boring number crunching.
>>96485644Ok, but are we seriously going to pretend adding 2 to a roll is some kind of insurmountable mathematical challenge? Surely you can just chill with the amount of bonuses overall, instead of throwing the whole probability curve out the window, no?
>>964856555e has those mechanics in place. ADV and DISADV just streamlines situational bonuses and modifiers. And it's not "adding 2 to a roll", situational modifiers are often compounded streams of numbers such as, +2, +1, -5, +3, +1 etc. Sure, the computation isn't exactly difficult but it's just bloat that slows the game down. Now imagine 4-5 players and a DM having to do that routinely and you can see how much slower you are dragging the game down.
>>96485666But then if the game does use adds, then you haven't really gotten rid of them, and my point stands that what you want is less adds, instead of throwing the whole adds system out the window. Besides, you could still make Adv/Disadv just a flat +3-5 to rolls on top of everything else. The non-stacking rule would be the important bit. This way you would at least have some grasp of what is going on with your chances. I will concede that actual chances don't seem to matter that much to hoomans, so if you want to argue down that route, I can see that argument.
>>96485655>Ok, but are we seriously going to pretend adding 2 to a roll is some kind of insurmountable mathematical challenge?its not the difficultyits the tedium of doing it every single time >instead of throwing the whole probability curve out the window, no?90% of people dont really care about probability curvesmost people only really know "this makes things more likely" and "this makes things less likely"adding a second dice adds more physicality to the roll and is more satisfying than adding a mental increase in number at the end
>>96485687The additions in 5e are straightforward, tied to specific ability modifiers and the proficiency system. These are meant to be pre-added into a single number by the players. There's no reason to not do that ahead of time. >it has to be black or whiteI'm not interested in this level of "thinking". The modifiers exist, just not at a level that adds bloat and time wasting. Half the reason most people swapped to 5e when it first released was because of how much number bloat exists in 3.5 and Pathfinder. The ADV system just takes all of that and streamlines it into 2 rolls. It's a much better system and keeps the table moving.
>>96485690>its the tedium of doing it every single time Just on this topic alone, for bonuses that come up every time you just record them. I do agree that 3.5 had way too many modifiers in combat, but that's mostly due to a bunch of granular rules each with their different modifiers.>>96485695>it has to be black or whiteStacking bonuses gives you more granularity over power growth than advantages do. I do see the appeal of the system at face value, I just worry it waters down the game, especially when it comes to power differentiation, etc.I'll give it a try and see how it feels. Thanks guys.Marking issue as solved, thread can be closed.
>>96485617Put down the hooch
>>96485637>>96485655It's an imperfect solution, but it's not dogshit. It keeps things simple. And if you really hate it, go play Pathfinder 2 for a while and see how you like that game.

>>96486902This is Lost Mine of Phandelver. The Redband Hideout is the big set piece of part 2 of the campaign, and it is the only event in part 2 that uses a grid. What even compelled you to make that comment?
>>96485231Absolutely yes! We have Session 0s for a reason and a part of that is discussing what the group's okay with collectively and as individuals. I've had players say >"I'm not interested in having my character involved in any romantic material- but I have no issue with the others doing that."or>"Yes, my character might look around for someone."and sometimes>"My PCs already romantically involved with someone- they even have a kid AND a dog."From experience, I've found that unsurprisingly, when you've got PCs who start romances with NPCs or other PCs the player starts to care more about that NPC/PC and works to help them more or do stuff for them. It makes the character feel more grounded to the world and in many cases I've seen players change the way their character behaves as they pick up mannerisms or ideals from their partners or they start making changes to their level up choices. For example: My first campaign had a Rogue PC fall for an Artificer NPC- as they started up a romance and time went on, both of them multiclassed into Artificer or Rogue respectfully to symbolize both of them teaching one another their respective talents. TLDR: Yes, it keeps player invested in their character and gives DMs opportunities to introduce conflicts/quests that are more character driven and personal
>>96487293and? dont use a grid for exploring a whole ass dungeon. The map is there for your general reference, not for the players to move their token over like you're playing a video game. That stuff is only good for large combat setpieces in complex terrain with dangers/hazards etc, and even then. It's not for walking around looking for traps and talking to npcs. You think because you're on vtt you have to setup video game shit. You dont need any of that. I don't think you realize the pointlessness of combat in a literal whiteroom of 3x4 tiles. There is no choice to be made, no positioning, no interaction.
>>96487394>the pointlessness of combat in a literal whiteroom of 3x4 tiles.what if they choose to move a whole 4 tiles back so they can use a door as a chokepoint?

Are there any rules/guidelines for giving out information? I know the study action exists personally, I think it is stupid that it requires a whole action to "think" and know if you know something but regardless useful information on this statblock for example>resistance and immunitiesUpon knowing it's an undead, most knowledgeable players will assume it has these immunities, but other creatures are not as common so it'd be helpful to give this kind of info out, but on what DC? 10? 15?>traits>special attacks>spell castingAll useful information that might alter how to approach a fight. Should it be info given out? On what DC? I don't think it should be all given out, but should they have a choice?>DC 10 for creature type>DC 15 the previous, plus resistance and immunities>DC 20 the previous, plus a player can choose one to know a trait, special attack, or if it has spellcastingAre there better ruels to steal out of 3.5 or pf1e?
What are some cool mind-controlled minions an evil Enchanter could have? What I have so far is a Rogue/Bard optimized for skills, a silly Paladin built around the Dragon Hide feat, and a Fighter who is good at grappling.
Hey, /5eg/. Pathfinder2e player here. Want to ask a question here: what's with the weirdly low attachment rate of 5e2024?I tend to see many LFGs make expressed points of playing only the 2014 version, maybe a "mix" of the mechanics (despite the fact 90% of the changes are just flat out improvements to many classes and mechanics so you really aren't mixing anything). And it just reads very off to me. Even knowing the potential reasons like needing to buy (lol, lmao) all the new books again or their distaste in WotC's practices, nothing about 5e24 itself seems like it would create this genuine split. Having seen how easy the PF2e Remaster project went, to the point people are asking for more of the older books to be remastered ASAP, I can't imagine Wizards truly dropped the ball THAT HARD in marketing the deal. So what gives? What are your personal reasons to not diving on in.
>>96487695WotC failed to really convince people of both:- It being cross-compatible (though it is)- The changes being for the better (though they are)5etards in particular hate learning rules, that's why they're trapped in 5e and also take 5 minutes every turn.

>>96487855Giant Slayer. Laying big enemies out with a blow is cool.
>>96487855Javelin of Lightning is really cool, the Lash of Immolation is cute, the Lute of Thunderous Thumping is fun (Make it into a Guitar)...While its not 'cool' mechanically- the Vicious Weapons are really strong and can be flavored into something cool. Like they seek blood or something.
>>96487695The art in the new books is less inspiring!

Bear lore isn't actually all that ridiculous, not every race is native to places with bears. It only seems silly because you, the player, have a large circumstance bonus to know about them because you live on the surface in the information age. The fuck does a githyanki or a thri-kreen or sahuagin know about bears?
Highly specific build question: what's the half-feat with +1 to DEX that you would recommend for an Aarakocra Rogue 8/Monk 5?Taking a half-feat for 18 DEX at Rogue 4, maxing out DEX at Rogue 8, taking Mobile at Monk 4.
>>96488336>4e bear lore is actually something that makes sense -> DC 20: Dire bears typically maul prey with their claws orcrush them to death with their thick, bestial arms. >>96488724They made it to screw over roll20. They were trying to buy them out and used a new edition as a bargaining chip. With a new edition roll20 were going to lose all their rights and WoTC were bringing in their garbage ogl. Fortunately their OGL plan backfired enormously and fell apart. But they’d already committed to making it and were still planning the sigil engine (which I imagine was outshone in every way be BG3). Their vtt failed too. Their efforts to corner the vtt market crashed and failed hard, what we’re left with is a bizarre half edition that is too afraid to become its own edition and as a result doesn’t justify its own existence.

I feel like most are at least on an acceptable level, or not enough to say it would be a mistake to move on them. Even the comparison to 4e Essentials doesn't make much sense to be, given how Essentials stuff is incompatible with 4e's original meta and design: it wasn't made to build up on it. It's not like every change they did was a complete middle-finger like what they did to Ranger. Also some of the /pol/lack stuff, I can't imagine the average 5e player caring. Border-Hopper Orcs are as funny as aggravating, but I can't imagine being so into 5e 10 years down the line and not learn how either accept or ignore the virtue signallnig.>>96487751I CAN believe the poor marketing issue, if hard to believe they haven't realized it a year later. It WAS a very confusing deal ("so is THIS OneD&D?") and even PF2e still having people asking "So what is the difference with Remastered content?". Still, given how people are HOSTILE towards the change compared to confused, I can't imagine it really was THAT BAD a market move. The new Starter Set and that controversy >>96488336, bait thread aside, does make it feel like they have no clue how to market the game anymore, though...
>>96489219I would like to remind newfags that at the time ORC was created, 5e was not in CC. CC was in response to the ORC forming, in short the rest of the industry saying "collectively, we out-lawyer you, the whole reason the OGL exists in the first place is because your forebears knew it was a largely unwinnable case to argue copyright theft of game rules, and we can and will just make our own d20 license agreement with blackjack and hookers and then you'll have nothing."But yes, the ORC in its current form is largely redundant, EXCEPT when it comes to things based on 3.5, which was not released to CC. Which is to say, a significant majority of WotC's competitors. I can't think of any systems other than black flag and shadowdark that use *5e* as a base, and they're both actually different licenses because they were published AFTER the OGL situation. Pugmire 1st edition I guess? It's mostly just settings for use with 5e, like Humblewood or whatever that benefitted from the CC move. But it was great optics to the fanbase. And everyone that WAS still affected because they used 3.5 just rewrote and rereleased under their own or a conglomerate one like ORC, e.g. M&M4, PF2 Remaster, etc.In fact, you can kind of tell which companies were bullied into signing the new agreement, for instance, Goodman Games hasn't had any new material or even licensed fanmade creations added to their shop in over 2 years. Why did DCC disappear off the map? Almost certainly they got scared by the mass threat letter and signed.
>>96489563>Also some of the /pol/lack stuff, I can't imagine the average 5e player caring. Border-Hopper Orcs are as funny as aggravatingBut does it hype you to play an orc? Something the Cave Bear notably lacks.>>96488487Similar case for the crocs really. Guessing that a croc will bite you with its big mouth is one thing. Knowing that the jaws are designed to trap you and keep you there rather than just ripping off a chunk of flesh is more detailed knowledge. And even in the example you pointed to, it's a DC 15 check to know that about crocs. That's a 25% chance for a random commoner to have that info, which certainly isn't bad. That extra 2 HP per level puts you at a max hp of a d10 class like a Ranger or Fighter. For a 2024 Wizard, you could play a Human Wizard Bladesinger with the Tough Origin feat and the Magic Initiate (Cleric) feat so you’d have access to Cure Wounds or Healing Word with INT to heal yourself or others when needed. Also False Life can give you some extra Temporary Hir Points.

>>96491442We did a survey on here not too long ago. It was a pretty even split between 5e and 5.5e. I think the main reasons 5.5e is underperforming and not seen a big uptake are as follows>Finishing/continuing a long standing campaign>Don’t want or need to buy a new book. The improvements barely justify the cost. Even pirated you have to learn the differences in the new rules.>Don’t want to learn new rules>Many people already have their own 5.5e with excessive amounts of houserules. WoTC encouraged this through their lazy design>Don’t like specific changes. For example the subclasses being at level 3 for everyone. For example a warlock with no specific patron, sorcerer not knowing his ancestry etc. They also nerfed martials even more as many monsters no longer have the loophole where magic weapons bypass many resistances. Ranger was nerfed???It just doesn’t seem like it was an edition made with the intention of making significant improvements or changes. And the 5e community were already making many house rules and have a plethora of third party content to use. People are taking up 5.5e but slowly and not everyone will swap over.

The stone returns to organic form in the basilisk's gullet.>Some alchemists are said to know how to process the basilisk's gullet and the fluids contained within. [Properly handled, the gullet produces an oil that can return petrified creatures to flesh and life.] Unfortunately for such a victim, any parts lost in stone form remain absent if the creature revives. Revivification using the oil is impossible if a vital part of the petrified creature, such as its head, is detached.Which is good to know. >>96487695>>96489563>>96491442>>96491927The biggest factor really is that, over the ten years between 2014 and 2024, the playerbase had identified a lot of the issues and come up with a variety of fixes and homebrew material. A fixed and updated 5e was kind of already available, with multiple places to discuss which materials to use. And the best part was that it was modular and could be adjusted to suit your playgroup's preferred level of power and complexity. When WotC announced a revision, there was a lot of expectation that we'd see something along the lines of what we'd been seeing amateurs come up with. Instead, we got mostly-pointless word shuffling, needless standardization that broke some class fantasies, a few spells being completely rewritten solely to overwrite their broken 2014 counterparts, and a half-assed weapon system that was clearly hurriedly copied from BG3. There were some good ideas in there, but the useful material per page ratio wasn't worth making the jump for groups that had already instituted more comprehensive and meaningful revisions. While some brewers, like our local Bullshit Anon, have implemented some of the 5.5 changes in their work, they're typically treated more like a list of possible changes than as a base edition to build on.
>>96492541>a half-assed weapon system that was clearly hurriedly copied from BG3The other parts I can agree with but the bg3 weapon system uses abilities with cooldowns while the 5.5e weapons have passive abilities. Bg3 weapons always give their powers while in 5.5e you need to go martial classes and get a set number of them. They’re fundamentally different so I have no idea what the fuck you’re talking about.

Anyone ever kick a player for simply almost never rping? I don’t mean “funny voices” or whatever pretend tryhards think of when they hear RP. I just mean no matter which character this guy plays he always acts or thinks the exact same way. It’s never the character speaking or reasoning or making choices, it’s always really the player. I have to do extremely obvious targeted scenes or dreams or npc encounters directly tied to his character for him to remember he’s playing a character and then maybe for 5min he might remember and “switch” to the character’s attitude/motivations/behavior. It’s tiresome and stands out because my other players really bring interesting and fun (for me and other players) behaviors that make for great moments, and when they play something else one one shots or whatever you can see the difference. This guy is just dead weight and brings nothing in that aspect. He’s never original or clever or surprising.

>>96497445>hey, this only works with the color red>>I think its pretty cool when you use it with the colour blue>it doesn't work with the color blue, it only works with the color red>>Ok but like, the colour blue is a colour just like the colour red so it should work>but it doesn't work with the color blue>>/tg/ hates fun and rule of cool!!!
>>96497481Don't forget the occasional cunny here and there.
>>96496684Biggest issue I have with Trained Combatant is that it does nothing for martial characters who already have those. No Origin Feat in the game is completely unusable by a class. That feat needs to have use for those classes- you could add Savage Attacker onto it. Also unless I’m mistaken aren’t all classes proficient with all Simple Weapons?
>>96497562>>96497562>Biggest issue I have with Trained Combatant is that it does nothing for martial characters who already have those.Seems like I posted the wrong one. I had the same thought and gave them a weapon mastery. Weaker than the general feat since it doesn't give an ASI and has prerequisites.>Also unless I’m mistaken aren’t all classes proficient with all Simple Weapons? You're right. I forgot that 2024 games all simple weapons to everyone. I recalled that 2014, sorcerer and wizard only had a handful of simple weapons and not all simple weapons.

There are weapon mysteries why can't there also be elemental type mysteries that trigger when you do spell damage of a certain type?
>>96497913Who knows? It's a real enigma.
one of my players is so fucking good and above the rest I am scared of losing her if the shortbus retards dont step it up
>>96497936does she have a penis?

Is there merit in dipping a level of fighter on a 2024 monk for nick+vex and an extra attack every turn with the twf style?
I'm trying to give my BBEG the classic katana finisher as a sort of final gambit but the balance is throwing me. I'm using Steelwind Strike as a reference but I just can't figure out what to do to bump it up a notch without becoming too overwhelming. Any ideas? The boss in question is currently CR15-ish
>>96498013damn
>>96498211Fighter gives a lot these days. Martial and medium armor proficiencies, weapon masteries, second winds, a fighting style. It's a pretty good dip.
>>96491017Try really mixing up the objectives in fights so it's not just a skirmish. Protect a vip, prevent enemies from activating things on the map, steal back the macguffin, the rogue lockpicking the gate for an escape path while you try and survive the unbeatable boss, all done with a time limit with a blades in the dark-style clock. Check out Flee Mortals for more interesting monster design in monsters. Really though dnd is kind of bad at its combat considering how much time you spend at it so you might want to consider changing systems. I've been eyeing draw steel which looks like 4e which in turn has more in depth grid combat. Holding off to see how good of a reception it gets.
>>96498211It's worth it to take two levels for action surge
>>96494269This. It's also why the artificer feels like crap, because it's "Just reflavor the spells bro"-the class, which doesn't work at all. The mechanics have to support what you're doing.
>>96498218Increased Critical Hit Range? Double Damage on a Critical? Decapitation if it reduces a target to 0 hit points? I’m thinking stuff that the Blade of Disaster or Vorpal Sword can do.
>>96498345I think Artificers would feel better if they didn’t have verbal components for their spells. Somatic and Material make sense- but verbal less so.
I'm playing a rogue in a 2014 5e game. This game has some homebrew stuff, racial bonuses are changed around a bit, some spells are changed, e.g. Silvery Barbs and Goodberry are level 2 spells, and so on. It's a relatively punishing game, and dying as a player if you or your team as a whole fuck up can happen easily and has happened before during the course of the game. And death is permanent, as regular resurrection spells don't work, only very high level stuff like wish that we don't have yet.I'm an elf rogue. Originally, when we started the game, I picked swashbuckler subclass. Elf racials are one wizard cantrip, I picked Booming Blade, 60 feet darkvision, 35 movement speed, and longbow proficiency. I originally wanted to play the character as a melee rogue, but due to difficulty of the game, it was simply not viable. So I've been more and more ranged as time went on. I've taken Elven Accuracy at level 4 and will soon be taking Sharpshooter at level 8. I have 20 DEX and 15 CON, other stats are mid, +1 or 0. We rolled for stats. We're about to hit level 8 and I've been given the opportunity due to in-game happenings to switch my subclass to Arcane Trickster, and decided to take it. Now, I just have to decide which spells to take. As a level 8 Arcane Trickster, I'll be able to get three cantrips, and six spells, up to four of which can be level 2 and rest level 1. Four of those six spells have to be either illusion or enchantment school. What spells would you all recommend? Here's what I'm thinking (continued in next post):
>>964984143 cantrips: Mage Hand (required), Light, Dancing LightsThis campaign spends a lot of time fighting in darkness, either at night, or underground. We have one character with Light cantrip in the party, but getting a second source of light can't hurt. Dancing Lights is for my benefit, it has 120 feet range so I can set it up way ahead of me and snipe at incoming enemies that I usually cannot see with my own 60 feet of darkvision.2 level 1 spells: Shield (any), Tasha's Hideous Laughter (enchantment/illusion)Shield is a great spell, but I wonder if I could do better? I can already halve damage from one attack as a reaction, Shield can outright stop damage and is incredibly potent if the enemy multi attacks. I only have 11 INT so any spell that requires a damage roll or a saving throw is a waste, but since my options for enchantment/illusion level 1 spells are so bad, I figured I could pick Tasha's Hideous Laughter in a freak chance I succeed at CCing the boss we're running away from.4 level 2 spells: Invisibility (enchantment/illusion), Mirror Image (enchantment/illusion), Blur (enchantment/illusion), Misty step (any).Mirror Image + Blur feels like an insane combo for survival, as only one requires concentration so I can have both up at the same time. Invisibility is also great for escaping or even scouting ahead in case stealth isn't enough. Misty Step seems like a great spell, but I wonder, should I get something else instead? As a rogue, I can already use disengage and dash as action + reaction and run away 70 feet (35 speed racial), so maybe I should get something else? Kinetic Jaunt might be outright superior to Misty Step, Enlarge/Reduce can give me +1d4 extra damage for ten turns as I'm sniping away at enemies at max range, or maybe even a level 1 spell that can also be cast at level 2 like False Life that gives me extra hit points to reduce the chance of getting killed in one unlucky round of rolls?
>>96496684>CrafterI used an absolutely cranked version of that at my table. My players aren't min-maxers so it doesn't get abused.
>>96498422Mirror image and Blur seem good on paper, but considering most fights last 3 rounds tops, spending one of them to just defensively buff up when you are a ranged character ie already out of harms way and could sneak around with your bonus action instead it's not great pick. Blur is just straight up worse than Mirror image imo. Shield can be done on reaction at any time you get swarmed by enemies to give you a freakish ac just when you need it, without using any of your precious few actions.Your reasoning on misty step is sound, it's nice to have, but with your limited slots and your cunning action you can probably do without it. As someone who seems very preoccupied with defensive stuff in a deadly game, consider Fog cloud. An often forgotten trait of these spells that obscure vision is that attacks of opportunity cannot be made on targets that cannot be seen. Meaning you could bail a fellow player out if they're getting attacked by putting a fog cloud on them, allowing them to run out of there as if they had disengaged. Invisibility can achieve the same thing, but is only touch range, so more for yourself in most situations, and then you can just bonus action disengage. If you have access to a feat, and you get to use Tasha's cauldron for everything, consider picking up the Metamagic Adept feat. Subtle and Quicken. Casting spells completely silently while sneaking around or in plain sight when talking to npcs without any indication it was you could really up the trickery feel of your character and would probably be really fun. With quicken you could also potentially pick up something like Hold person and fish for an auto-crit where you bonus cast the hold person and sneak attack crit them on the same turn if it lands. You could only do it once per long rest and it's not the best, but would feel really cool.
>>96498476Thanks for the Fog Cloud recommendation, I totally missed out on that spell when I was looking for stuff to pick and it seems pretty useful, especially since it's 120 feet range. I'll definitely consider that one. Most encounters we go through are relatively easy when it comes to swarms of enemies, goblins and whatnot, but our DM likes to throw "boss encounters" at us pretty often. There was one recently that spooked me. A massive undead gorilla that could move 40 feet and had a legendary action to jump 60 feet and cause everyone in the melee range of where he lands to make a CON saving throw or get stunned. And he had multi attack. So that thing stunning and attacking you is a death sentence. Now that I'm getting level 8, I'll be getting Sharpshooter so my goal is to always be at 120 feet away from the boss whenever we do a boss encounter, just to avoid creatures like this one. But DM also knows I'm getting Sharpshooter next level so he can design bosses specifically to bully me, which is why I want more defensive abilities. My only big issue with that is, my own darkvision is only 60 feet, and there's a chance I might be unable to see the enemy, depending on where the party members are. That's why I'm seriously considering getting Eldritch Adept - Devil's Sight at level 10, if I live that long. As Arcane Trickster, I have spellcasting so I'm eligible to take that feat. Alternatively, it's either Tough for 20 extra hit points, or Resilient (CON) for 10 extra hit points and proficiency in CON saves.
>>96485231I allow whatever the fuck the players want to do, because I'm not a faggot. What, am I gonna prescribe them what kind of relationship they will have with people in the setting?
>>96498636If it's the single boss fights that give you trouble, then if you get into the loop of Shoot>hide, >Shoot>hide, Shoot>hide, then you'll stay hidden between your turns and you won't have to worry about the boss jumping across the map to hurt you since he can't see you and will free you from the need to have those action to cast defensive spells. If your dm starts doing multiple creature boss fights so one of the bosses stays on you or tries to fuck you with plain maps with no cover or shadows to fascilitate hide (which is boring and kind of defeats the point of the rogue, but some dms are antagonistic like that), and you also notice he has these giant + to hit on his bosses that basically never miss, then shield isn't as good since the boss will always hit anyway and then mirror image is good since it will neglect any attack no matter how big the hit bonus is if it hits an illusion. As someone who plays on a grid, these 120ft distances are kind of rare, but perhaps you play in very big rooms. And if your dm is big on light rules and you often fight in darkness then I suppose darkvision could be useful. Most tables just handwave that stuff as "eh, it's a bit dark but you all kind of see what's happening where the fight is" but again, maybe your table is strict at that stuff. Also, like you yourself said, your dm is already making custom abiltiies to hunt chase you down across the map then he likely won't stop just because you increase the distance, he will simply up his game too, and wasting an entire feat for darkvision is really costly. Devil's sight does open you up to picking up the Darkness spell which you could cast on your ranged weapon to run around with it. How the dm would interpret that darkness would be kind of iffy,if you're in a poorly lit room it could blend in to make it easier to stealth around and give you permanent adv. on attacks and disadv. on theirs. If the room is brightly lit, makes it obvious you're in the shadow though.
Which class (and subclass) would you recommend if I want to feel like pic related and be a blaster who turns enemies into nuclear ash (5.5e 2024)
