A long time to hold a grudge for sure but they are clanners after all
>>
How useful would you say an AC/20 Engineering vehicle is compared to a Hetzer? It doesn't have the ammo or armor, but it does have speed. It could probably cause some havoc in cities before it gets blown up.
>>
>>96648216
Why not Saladin
>>
>>96647983
This guy is cooking with fire, we might have a good game on our hands.
>>
>>96648186
I wouldn't say that, Kurita helped Kerensky more than most. Since he despised Amaris so he played both sides. It's the young Marik that had a bone to pick with the old general.
>>
>>96648250
Trying to figure out a poorer PDF army using more generic and less often used by players but probably used more often in universe vehicles.
>>
>>96648340
The engineering vehicle AC/20 isn't really meant to be a weapon, it's a demolition tool. If you're splashing the cash for anything with an AC/20, you're better off getting one made for it. Hetzers are relatively cheap.
>>
>>96648409
I'd probably want a big LRM on an engineering vehicle to use special ammo.
>>
>>96648423
I think the intent is a powder actuated wrecking ball for clearing out reinforced structures. It's pre-star league so there would have been a lot of age of war junk lying around.
>>
>>96648433
Real world engineering vehicles actually used fuck-massive explosive charges for blowing up structures or traps since at least WWII. It's almost like artillery, but very, very short range.
>>
Anyone have a clear explanation of how pilot skill affects the BV of a mech?

I know 5/4 has no effect, but I'm starting to wonder if it's worth sinking points into gunnery and just having a smaller lance with higher damage weapons and better range, or having shittier pilots with a bigger lance and more guns (basically the "sniper vs spray and pray analogy).

Inb4 other unit types, I still don't understand how any of those work yet
>>
>>96648440
The real BT equivalent is artillery cannons but those don't exist until the early 31st century because BT is silly.
>>
>>96648943
Short range, low velocity, high caliber ballistic weapon? Sounds like an ac/20. There should be demolition shells that do double damage to buildings.
>>
I think the LAC/2 is going to come into its own if they follow through with the proposed AP ammo change. Right now they're quite heavy for a weapon with the same range as a PPC and 1/5th the damage. The UAC/2 far outranges it and can do double damage, the LB2-X is better at plinking vees, the RAC/2 is an extended range SRM-6. Anything heavier than 20 tons can safely ignore a 2 damage hit for tens of turns. But if each of those hits has a 1 in 6 chance of doing meaningful damage to any mech, that drastically changes things.
>>
>>96649108
Thats just unbalanced in a different direction. Give both AC/LAC 2s and anti infantry bonus D6, say the standard AC 2 round is a frag burst wrapped around a small armor penetrator core or something. Now it has a niche at least and there is a use case in combined arms.

And now we can make a firestarter II with LAC/2s and plasma rifles.

There is a chart.

Bumping piloting to 4 is useful for assaults.

Bumping gunnery to 3 can be useful for mechs that carry a small number of high damage guns, like the Templar-OI (which also has a C3, in case you wanna use that).

Overall, while it can be useful, it's generally better to have more units. More initiative activations is extremely stronk, and rolling more dice is better. Bumping pilot skills is something I usually reserve for filling out BV (or because I feel like it).

Lastly, if you can reliably keep range, pilot skill upgrades get better. You'll have much better chances to hit at long range.
>>
>>96649414
Generally I put most of my gunnery/piloting upgrades on cheap mediums.
>>

> found/stole some military gear, fixed it up
>goes on random military base raids on less guarded planets
>terrible pilots and gunners
>win by swarm
>run 6/6 running light and medium mechs, tanks and troops
>bv 3k game would give me 4 locusts, a battle master and a tank (maybe 2)

I think this would be hilarious to play
>>
>>96649554
I've run green forces as opfor before, if your goal is to win instead of just being fodder, it's kinda crummy.
>>
>>96649168
There's already specialty ammo for anti infantry applications.
>>
>>96649108
I'm going to bet they either return the accuracy penalty or increase the penalty on rolling. The +1 to hit and the -4 to crit basically made AP ammo worthless. A +1 to hit and -2 to crit or no penalty to hit and a -3 to hit would be improvements that aren't auto takes.
>>
>>96649667
Yeah, my point is that the 2s don't have a niche outside of RAC/2 which is a mid range crit seeker, and thats barely a niche thanks to LBX. Instead of making them a boatable crit maker with new AP ammo rules, put an attribute on them that gives them a use. An inherent bonus against infantry or something accuracy related is easiest to integrate.
>>
>>96649414
Would you rather have a 3/1 or a 2/3 pilot? They cost the same.
>>
>>96647915
Damn fascists
>>
>>96649773
A bonus against infantry is going to be useless the majority of the time. At best you have a long range machine gun for 8 to 12 times as much weight. Being able to generate golden BBs semi regularly is an actual niche.

What if Wolf’s Dragoons attacked Terra in 3028?

Jaime Wolf traveled there for the wedding of Hanse and Melissa, and he snuck in weapons. He also ended up murdering at least two ComStar agents.

Say ROM caught on and captured him and whoever had accompanied him. Would the Dragoons be able to break through Terra’s defenses to rescue him?
Keep in mind their warships were still on mothballs and months away in the opposite direction.
>>
>>96649843
Seems like a retarded plot worthy of Stackpole.
>>
>>96649787
assuming gunnery/piloting, depends what mech I'm running.

3/1 on something like Atlas 8-D, Neaderthal, or Berserker. 2/3 on a gun mech. Once your gunnery is that low, it doesn't make that big of a difference. The biggest % differences for TNs are 6<->7<->8 (+/- 16~%, picrel).

>>96649441
I feel this qualifies under the "fill out your BV" thing I mentioned? Any particular examples of where you feel this is more impactful?

>>96649471
I FUKKEN LOEV CHARTS
>>
>>96649831
A niche that is is outclassed in by an LB-5X. What is the use case for a (L)AC/2? The gun and ammo require 5 tons and 2 crits for perhaps the most suboptimal performance on the table. Its like it exists just for flavor, so you can imagine small shells pinging off your mech with no effect.
>>
>>96649872
>Any particular examples of where you feel this is more impactful?
I'd rather a 3/5 Vindicator or Enforcer than a 4/5 Griffin or Wolverine. Also things like a Panther or Rifleman 3C. Cheaper mechs that can hit hard.
>>
>>96649890
The LB-5X is going to have 3 chances to have a 3% chance of a TAC that will be confirmed 40% of the time. LAC/2 with AP ammo under the new rules has 1x 100% chance of a TAC that is confirmed 17% of the time.
>>
>>96649890
LACs can use precision ammo
>>
>>96650051
So a (L)AC/2's only use is to spam crits and not really factor in damage. That doesn't really fit with the feel of the game. But will make blackjack, maulers, and kraken hilarious to play.

>>96650062
Yeah, but thats still a wash really against LB-5X with its cluster bonus.
>>
>>96650090
-2 is q lot better than -1
>>
>>96650143
A situational -2 vs a constant -1 that turns to -3 against flyers. And can be traded out for a 5 point hit. Really stretching to say the 2s can compete there.
>>
>>96650090
>>96650191
A LAC/2 is half the weight of an lb5x, so you should be comparing two of them vs a single LB.

Comparing two LAC/2s with 2t (one prec) ammo vs one LB-5X w/2t ammo:
if the opponent stands still the LB-5X has a 1pt damage advantage with the same to hit. Using cluster the LB-5X has a 1pt damage disadvantage with a -1 to hit.
If the target moves 3 hexes, the LB-5X has a 1pt damage advantage with slug, with a +1 to hit. With cluster it has a 1pt damage disadvantage with the same to hit.
If the target moved 5 or more hexes, the LB-5X with slug has a 1pt damage advantage with a +2 to hit. With cluster it has a 1pt damage disadvantage and a +1 to hit.

He's not wrong, by comparison to a lot of 80s hex and chit games, BT is downright simple. There's no result matrices, you aren't comparing an autocannon that does 8.4 damage to armor type A and 6.3 to armor type B with one that does 5.1 to A and 7.1 to B, but only within the first 5/7ths of its range band.

Sure, as targets. They are my boys, for better or worse. I generally prefer the Big MAC because my intro to the game was through their sourcebook/scenario. 3025 is a madhouse of ragtag forces doing the impossible, even by the standards of the era. As the timeline goes on, they get some very slick mechs at the cost of becoming not-China. They turn their limited mech production towards reasonably high-spec machines with stealth capabilities and triple strength myomer. Xin Sheng is very much an asspull, but it turns out that having everyone else deal with the Clans, Jihad, and a whole bunch of ther bullshit means you get to rebuild in peace. They hide a bunch of material then try to invade the RotS. The ilClan-era fluff seems to be a return to form for them since they lost so much material and got nuked a bunch.

Tl;dr Underdogs who got swole, and are back to being underdogs after gwtting their ass kicked.

That's underselling things. Having more units is basically a 100% guarantee of victory. Being able to move multiple units last means you can always choose how and when to engage your opponent. It would allow even a light lance to kill and assault Mech 10 out of 10 times.

Cappies are awesome. Stealth is cool, and while I hate that they lost the Russian flavor, being Chinese is the future of humanity anyway, since all the western nations are imploding from freedom and degeneracy.

But what I really like about them is the fact that their nakedly authoritarian, and don't even pretend that everyone deserves equal rights. If you want any rights as a Capellans, you have to earn them. They aren't just given to you at birth. More countries should take rights away from people until they've been earned, that would make sure that people actually value their rights, and would keep undesirable people on the bottom run of society in their proper place. America could do a lot worse than adopt a system like this. Everyone having freedom was obviously a mistake, forcing people to earn their freedom, or else be disposable laborers, would go a long way towards making America great again.

It's not counting the hexes, it's remembering how many you moved!
Easy when you only have a single mech to keep track of, exponentially harder with each additional mech.
Sure you can use a regular D6 for that, but the Movement Dice give you ALL the relevant information at a GLANCE.

This is the kind of minor thing that fuck your entire order of Operations up if you forget it, which again, becomes exponentially more likely the more units you are keeping track of.

They obviously wouldn't help you anyway, but no, you technically don't even need to use the colored d6s that many tabletop gamers just happened to have from other games. If you can't remember if a mech walked, ran, or jumped you're probably too stupid to play this game anyway.
>>
>>96652988
Rule of thumb is a few days to a week of transit travel to the actual jumpship, a week per jump (to recharge, the actual jumps are functionally instant), one jump per 20-30 lightyears (30 max, but it's very risky to jump out into the void, if the next systems over are 20 and 45 LY away, you should jump to the 20), then another week to transit from the jumpship to your destination.

Vehicles used to be built with fractional accounting by default for some reason. Not mechs, just vees.

It's not fractional accounting, vehicles just use 1 ton increments instead of 5 and this is still true, even though most still have weights that fit with 5s anyway. It mainly comes down to how vehicles don't have a structure chart like mechs do.

Osiris in question was heavily modified before being received and was extremely annoying, pumped out perfume and played "Missiles are firing" whenever the SRMs where triggered and would overlap with each tube firing.

He would try and get rid of it over the years but grew fond of the girl and kept her but dressed up in Ghost Bear gear with bear ears.

Short story is in Shrapnel #14 and called The Great Work.

All these new rules seem to do is make Speed more valuable than Armor, which it already is. And Pilot Skill less valuable than Gunnery Skill, which it already is. Speedy 2/5s with SRMs become even better than they already were, but the game doesn't really benefit from streamlining or balance and in some cases it becomes more complicated.

They were fielded in whole battalions in the SLDF, and the Great Houses kept fieldung them en masse until they couldn't anymore. Past a certain point I'd say in air lances of two, to take advantage of being able to stick them in the ASF bays on dropships. Past another certain point, in singles due to rarity, of course.

Unless they were fielded in groups of 6 because they could be aired in both mech bays and ASF bays. It would certainly make the logistics around moving a LAM battalion easier.

I 3D print most of my minis, and usually if I can find a sculpt for a given mech that isn’t a MWO rip I will go with that instead. Most custom sculpts either have a cooler rendition of the mech or are better suited to printing and painting.
>>
Are the mech miniatures to scale with one another? I know there are minis of air ships and pods that are vastly different scale, but are the mechs themselves generally at the proper scale compared to one another on miniatures? I don't know if I worded this question in a way that makes sense.
>>
>>96658165
NTA, but there's gameplay differences between l/srms and atms, enough to justify all three's existence.

But just like how clanmechs get case built in because of improved manufacturing processes over time with no downside, tech like TSM really should become standard for all new mechs at some point. TSM already costs no tonnage, it's effectively a free upgrade for every single mech. (Except for BV, side question do clam mechs pay BV for their built in case?)

I'm astounded you gave an example that requires wide maneuvering on a single mapsheet. Which should be giving the KGC an advantage, yet the player has positioned it in the magic death acid instead- likely to mitigate any sorta survivability advantage the KGC's tonnage conferred.

On the offensive, how practical is it to refuel your aerospace fighters? Can you just put your dropship next to / on water and make hydrogen and use the dropship as a refueling station? You could keep it orbit too I suppose and just save enough fuel for them to enter and leave atmosphere at the ends of every use case. Thinking about how a full-on aerospace superiority doctrine might work in practice and what ground forces you might want to have to enable your birds.

Not really. The scale is probably the most consistent it's ever been, but it's consistently out of scale along weight class lines. Assaults are wildly oversized, Heavies are a little oversized, and then depending on how you view things either lights are undersized or mediums are a little oversized. But this is consistent, which cannot be said about the old metal line. All of these models are meant to represent blips on a map that is itself in a different scale from any of them. They are not meant to be direct representations. Think of it as you being a commander looking at a holographic war table if it makes you feel better.

The only thing I really don't like about the LAM WiGE rules functionality is that they still have to expend 2 MP to move forward while more than 1 hex above the ground. I don't like that their rules are explicitly a cludge of the WiGE rules in the first place, but that's the only part of it that I think plays "wrong". That rule only applies because WiGEs struggle to remain high up after launching themselves off a cliff. It shouldn't apply to something that can gain altitude like a VTOL.

I hope the "leg is not actually blown off" change does not make it through play testing. Having a limping hunk of metal attached to you is pretty much fulfilled by having a severly critted fucked up leg.
>>
>"I’m less of a fan of the minimum 2 MP loss per hip crit. While it does make sense, as you don’t want it to be exactly the same as taking a leg actuator crit, it makes it pretty easy to immobilize a 3/5 and a 2/3 (like an urbanmech) will be immobilized with a single hip crit."
>"This is avery largebuff to cheap BA that can make leg attacks."
>"I am worried about assault mechs getting immobilized while they still have lots of armor, and then the -4 to hit them makes them evaporate."
>"I am not a huge fan of the -2 MP minimum loss, for reasons mentioned above. If 3/5 or 2/3 mechs don’t get compensated for this with a significant BV decrease they are going to get shoved out of viability pretty hard. Particularly with the side arc changes from the last playtest being horrifyingly punishing to 3/5 assault mechs."
thoughts?
>>
>>96666247
3/5s were taking 2 mp loss on a hip under current rules, nothing changes here. Sure, on the second hip crit, per the proposed rules they'd be considered immobile, but a mech with 2 hip crits is a mission kill most of the time anyways. They shouldn't get a BV decrease because the opponent might bring BA, or because players can't into proper positioning, that's idiotic.
>the side arc changes from the last playtest being horrifyingly punishing to 3/5 assault mechs.
This sounds pretty overstated. Besides, big slow assaults are already pretty efficient in BV, making them even cheaper sounds like a poor decision, especially a "significant" decrease.

Start taking assaults with Jump Jets, abuse how easily it is to get cover now, and take some supporting units. Surprise surprise, slow units are very vulnerable to being mobility killed and unless you take precautions, people will find ways to mitigate them without having to meet them in a standup fight. I will continue to use Fa Shih paradropping out of transports to ruin your day with mines and leg attacks.

>>
>>96667083
There is at least one variant that replaces the cameras with a machine gun, but it's probably better off just keeping the cameras. The Boomerang is as barebones as a prop plane can get. It's also another unit that suffers from vehicles not having proper quirks, its fluff says it's so basic that pilots have to be careful because it doesn't even have a full suite of instruments to warn pilots they're about to hit a mountain, but it can also take off and land on very short runways and can be disassembled and reassembled quickly so it's good for general cargo instead of a proper bay.

>The MAD-3J was born alongside the better-known -3D when Davion engineers swapped the number and mounting positions of the -3R’s primary weapons to mitigate some of the chassis’ more notorious design flaws. Replacing the arm-mounted PPCs with Whirlwind autocannons and putting a single Hellstar in the dorsal mount eliminated the ammo-feed problems of the standard model, while running much cooler and retaining its reach and striking power.
>Meanwhile, the MAD-3V grew from the salvage culture of the late Third Succession War, as components from destroyed Von Luckner tanks were increasingly used to repair disabled ’Mechs. Although the tanks’ smaller reactors made this variant slower, the tonnage saved allowed engineers to replace the standard autocannon with the Von Luckner’s far more devastating Armstrong 20.
The fuck?

>Members of the Dark Shadows have been given the choice of using the basic Hermes II or a variant first devised by Marik battalion commanders. Dubbed the Mercury, the variant replaces the ’Mech’s autocannon with two medium lasers and two machine guns. Two extra heat sinks were also added to the insides of the ’Mech’s feet to help with the extra heat. The Mercury is lighter by three tons and is slightly more nimble than the standard Hermes II, while the new weapons array seems to suit some warriors better. There is talk of making this variant available to other owners in the Free Worlds League.
>Editorial Notes
>Their Mercury was not underweight, as publicly claimed by the FWLM, but used the remaining tonnage for a larger engine—information so closely held and so relatively new at the time that not even ROM was aware.
Devilish.

Yeah, that is a trap they fell into because it is based on a macross Valkyrie.
In that machine's humanoid form the cockpit ends up in the chest of the mech. The pilot seat rotates so pilot is oriented properly, the canopy is covered by a sliding armored panel and the pilot relies on screens to see their surrounding using cameras in the head.

That is why LAMs are THE PEAK of battletech technology.

Looks better than some of the designs that Catalyst has released recently. You just need to release a TRO of all it's badly though out variants, a model for it (bundled into a box containing a wide selection of mechs that nobody would use), as well as a couple of slop novels that break all previous lore and with combat that lacks any resemblance to how mechs fight in the game.
