>>96680850This. It used to be that maybe you'd buy a box or two and just trade cards for the stuff you want and didn't get. How MTG is supposed to be. And their old collector products like the from the vaults boxes would be there so you could get some reprints of the old cards you could use to play. No serialization either. And they weren't insanely priced but $30-$40 and you'd just pre-order them through your shop.

>The year is 2032. The MTG Goldfish guys are celebrating a historic milestone: reaching 1000 episodes of the Goldfish podcast. On this episode:>Richard returns to the Goldfish podcast to discuss WoTC's annual Universes Within set release. Richard abandoned Goldfish altogether not long after leaving the commander podcast to become a full-time One Piece content creator, now hosting the "One Piece Goldfish" podcast where he consistently angers his own listeners by trashing every new Luffy card, and in his spare time pilots off meta One Piece decks to respectable 45% win rates. On this episode, Richard laments every card from this new set as "unplayable in a meta dominated by Izzet Johnny Bravo/Lisa Simpson combo". >Seth took over as the head of MTG Goldfish after Richard's departure. In this episode, Seth is in an uphill battle to save Standard, arguing that the format cannot survive a world in which the best deck, Izzet Johnny Bravo/Lisa Simpson, comprises 65% of all decks played at the last pro tour. As one of Standard's remaining 20 players, Seth himself qualified for the pro tour by default, narrowly missing out on Day 2 after succumbing to Crim's Dora the Explorer Dimir control.
>However, after Rudy from Alpha Investments secured a controlling stake in the company, WoTC have held firm to their commitment to hold ban updates only once every 3 years, just before rotation, for fear of alienating the delicately curated playerbase of pokemon scalpers that they have cultivated.>Crim (lead consultant on the Johnny Bravo set), thinks the meta is as interesting as it has ever been, talking in great detail about the intricacies of playing out the Johnny Bravo mirror. If anything, Crim argues that the meta could be improved by the banning of another card, a fringe card but nevertheless one of the few barely playable Universes Within cards left in standard: a 3 mana simic enchantment with "landfall: Target artifact or creature loses all abilities and becomes a green Elk creature with base power and toughness 3/3." Richard and Seth laugh at the idea that this draft chaff needs to eat a ban.
>>96680830I have literally never seen someone outside of Cummander scum defending UB. Or actually thinking is a good idea.

How come Spider-man doesn't have Commander?
Would this work as a black border card or only silver border?
>>96681799Because it started life as a 100 card mini-set and then got expanded to a bigger, albeit still small set, and there wasn't enough time to also make Commander decks in that timeframe I guess.
>>96681799Because WotC was already stretching it paper thin just to make it an undersized Standard set once they realized mini-sets were a bust
>>96681799Because it was originally Commander set.
>>96681802Apart from the Planeswalker type being silly it all functions in the rules of Magic. It's Form of the Dragon except you become a Planeswalker, etc. A proper version would probably have a rider of you losing the game when the Planeswalker side leaves.
>>96681802I don't see why it couldn't work in black border unless I'm missing something.
>>96681762Love how the old cards looked. A lot cleaner without the borders.
I like how Spiderman has been around for almost 100 years but they have to have 10 Peter Parkers and 4 Green Goobers because there aren't enough characters.
>>96681824To be fair, I think Symbiote Spider-Man and Cosmic Spider-Man are 'specific incarnations' of Peter so they at least make sense to exist separately, but a lot of the Peters aren't necessary. It also doesn't help that a lot of the supporting cast just wasn't all that present? Like... Mary Jane, Jameson, Aunt May and Flash Thompson I think were the only non-costumed characters to get anything, and Flash Thompson even still got Agent Venom anyway.
>>96681799like 90% of the cards in the set are legendary it already is a commander set
>>96681824Spider-Man's only been around 60ish years. You gotta look towards the likes of Batman or Superman to break 80 years. But to your point, it's just the nature of capeshit. The character and setting gets rebooted every couple decades, so there's a lot of recycling.
>>96680553>>TQ>What did you like about the original Lorwyn and Shadowmoor?I liked it because it was cool. First 2 sets had Tribal gimmick and Goblins, Merfolks, and Faeries going new colors. Also it was really cool to build kitchen table decks based on Tribal. Also the set looked foolish like a childrens' book but had really dark shit on arts. Shadowmoor was released when my playgroup was not buying as much new product (things were hard back then) so we couldn't enjoy it as much but we bought some starter decks and played around with them. The UW kithkin deck was really cool. Also I hate those "perfect" digital art representing Lorwyn.>>96680712If it was only God of War 1, 2 I could be tempted to buy, honestly>>96681265I love those cycles and also the "Gods" of shadowmoor.
>>96681810>A proper version would probably have a rider of you losing the game when the Planeswalker side leaves.Technically, if you would've lost the game because you're life is at 0 or you have 10 poison counters, you would lose the game if the planeswalker did leave the battlefield and the condition was still met. At most you'd be protected from Door to Nothingness or given an extra turn if your library has empty.
>>96681705The animals being weird hybrids of real life things aren't the focus of any worldbuilding except in one very narrow case. The claims of good worldbuilding are instead talking about the cultures of the setting, the events of the plot, and the mechanics of the superpowers. The one case of animals being hybrids being worldbuilding-y is when the main characters read that one of the kings of the settings just has... a pet bear. Not a platypusbear, or any other animal mix. It's just straight bear, and that's something weird as fuck that only a king would have.
is it possible to make a good deck that has at least 4x copies of earch card type?
>>96681631Should have been names "unstoppable Leveler" It is crazy how bad the card designs are nowadays, they can't even write simple references.>>96681696Kino art>>96681799I know, right? That must be why it failed!!-WOTC executive
>>96681705I mean, being a kids’ show is sort of an excuse, but it’s really part of the world to make it unique and less obvious a parallel to real life. (what with imperial Japan invading China, Tibet, eskimos, etc.) It also helps the actual fantasy/magical parts (dragons, sky bison, spirits, bending) feel a little less out of place.I rewatched the original series and for the most part it holds up- the animation is good, the character writing is solid, and the story/conflict is believable. It’s also another clear case of works of fiction being made better by the fires of upper management restraint, where the budget and broadcasting rules created innovation, rather than today where excess budget and meddling makes things terrible. Korra is pretty not great for a lot of things, so it’s not really worth checking out unless you’re already a fan.
>>96681932Decks that rely on high redundancy like aggro, ramp, and fast combo decks theoretically could.
>>96681025Based and Trufflesnout-pilled.
>>96681957Korra's not even worth checking out as a fan since it just shits up the setting and generally mishandles all the old characters and their legacies.

>>96682531All the mechanics included in that enchantment have already been printed on other cards. It would definitely *work* in black border, in the sense that it's compatible with the game's rulebook, but it also seems like a kind of deep cut into the core mechanics that WotC would hesitate to actually print in Current Year.
Does anyone keep up with Magic anymore? Like every set every product. Do you know anybody that does this successfully? When I actually played I'd be pretty good at remembering new cards that printed even if they weren't played much because their wasn't that much product coming down the slope tube.Between a new set every other month, previews that literally never stop, and 17 alt arts for every card, how the fuck could someone reasonably keep up with it?
>>96682392>Q: You do see how that argument ["Magic is an ever-changing thing"] could justify literally any change, right? It's not strictly true that change is good any more than it is that change is bad. Change is just change.>A: We in R&D try something new, usually because we have some hint that players might like something. If players like it, as a collective whole, we do more of it. If they don’t like it, we do less of it. Universes Beyond is not at the level it is because we wanted to force it onto the players. It’s not some evil agenda to make players play the way we want them to play. Universes Beyond is at the level it is because it’s a wild, run-away success, by every possible metric we have to measure success. It's kinda fascinating that many in the community don't seem to recognize that they care more about making money than what's healthy for the game. They're just making whatever sells well at this point, and most of the desires they've had to design certain things in Magic or experiment they've probably done long ago.>And note, it’s not just a success in Magic. Cross-branding is wildly successful everywhere right now. It’s a giant trend, and it’s happening because people, in general, really like it.This is the real slop that needs to be called out and it pains me that people just keep eating this shit up.>I’m saying we are following the will of the players, and the vast majority of the players want it. And yes, I think that Magic keeps evolving because it follows the will of the players is a good thing. Can't tell if this is his bank account talking or if he genuinely thinks UB in standard is somehow to the benefit of the Magic community.

how to fix standardadd budewadd ash blossom
Maybe I'm just completely wrong here, because I don't see how this many people in this thread can have such a different opinion on this card than I do besides me being wrong. But this card seems completely unplayable to me.The escape cost on this card is incredibly restrictive. GGUU means there's no way you could fit it into any 3 color decks, and simic does not have any good ways to get cards into their Graveyard on a regular basis to pay for the 5 exiled card requirement for the escape. This could have had some use in sultai with Yarok the Desecrated possibly, but there's no way you can fit black into a deck with this card reliably.I'm looking at this based on what matchups it'll go against. You don't want to play this against aggro decks because it's a 3 CMC growth spiral that can't be played at instant speed. If control decks become popular and escape becomes a serious mechanic, then Esper will run 3 CMC Kaya and beat this card by removing it from the GY. Leyline of the Void exists in standard, rendering it a moot point as well.If I want ramp I'm going to look at Risen Reef or Beanstalk Giant. If I want a card to reliably draw me cards, I'm going to look at Hydroid Krasis. I'll fully admit that if this card gets going, it's probably going to win the game. But it's not an easy card to play, and I don't want an difficult card to play as a win condition.

>>96684073This is peak magic card beauty, this was a soulful card game at one point. No magic card will ever look this good ever again. They even canned the lesbo who made this art
>>96675173Unrelated to the common creatures, just dogshit in general. >>96675095"Legendary" is/was meant to allow stronger creatures to be printed for constructed because you can only have one out at a time (while in draft, being rare is (more like was meant to be) pseudo legendary). Common legendary threats would be an interesting concept for a draft/cube (not necessarily good, just interesting), and first time legendaries came out, they also where at common but >LOL LEGENDS.
>>96684093Terese Nielsen is one of the best artists this game had. I think it's a loss of the hand drawn style, the digital art has always looked soulless.Picrel is the first mtg I ever saw and got me interested in mtg
>>96683964Hasbro going under, and WOTC being freed. Maro is just a patsy lightning rod.
>>96684093if this came out today you'd complain about her being black
>>96684152They have like maybe 5 of the old artists left doing stuff (sometimes?) It's brutal. But also not my problem because I only collect and play with older cards now anyways. Publicly firing their best artists like Terese and Seb McKinnon for dumb reasons was such a bad decision for the longetivity of the game - people stop buying cards when they're all ugly and digitalized, that was discussed a lot with the spiderman set. People get so hyped when Mark Tedin pops up every few sets to do something because the actual high fantasy art enjoyers are STARVING
>>96680620More my lord? This one is an especially exquisite serving, it has Joel as a black card because white man bad I guess?
I don't think there's anything more insulting then when wizard goes "Actually, there is no problem with the format, just keep playing :)" and there's a brutally oppressive combo deck warping the game. They did the same shit they're doing with Vivi to Pioneer with Amalia It really says a lot when Modern is the healthier format right now
>>96684230>Brick Master
>>96684230I mean it makes sense, Joel was a selfish man who doomed humanity after all
>>96684225I quite like Nils Hamm, he's still pretty good and I'm unsure if Drew Tucker is still doing shit for them, Rebecca Guay too. For whatever they get rid of all the good artists and replace them with sweatshop chinamen artists (soon to be replaced by ChatGPT or some shit). The game's art is so bad now, it's hardly worth collecting, who's buying this stuff? I guess Bloombarrow is kinda cool, the rest? garbage. Is this the market research, will of the players (tm) bullshit R*sewater loves to bleat on about? Who's asking for this?
>>96684189Maybe if she were like every other black woman in modern magic art, self inserts of wotc employees who are ugly and fat that are just input into AI, then they digitally paint whatever hat is this set onto them. They they give them this smug look of "empowerment" that just comes off as bitchy or preachy. If Terese redid this painting today I would probably just be amazed, because she has come a long way since this early era. You want to see an empowered female in your card game? Look at the way these brushstrokes fully bring the beautiful female figure to form in an unsaid, intimidating fashion. We will never have this again.
>>96684264Idk, I've never played the games, I was just serving up some slop.
>>96680553Tribes (especially two Elemental tribes) and 'No Humans Allowed' policy; return to fantasy after the postapo of Time Spiral, megalopolis of Ravnica, Japan-inspired Kamigawa and metallic Mirrodin; filter lands and hybrid cards from Shadowmoor/Eventide...
>>96684241There’s no problem with the format because things are so bad it’s unfixable at this point. Ban Vivi and Cauldron and that deck stays just as strong and oppressive. All the aggressive cards in the format are way overtuned to be viable in EDH. Standard is just the format of all threats no answers now.
>>96684266The reason is they can pay them less. much less. And these "digital artists" can just make an AI prompt, touch up the imperfections and submit it. They have to get a new set of 200+ cards every 60 days. There's no quality control on the art not just because wizards doesn't care, it's because its the finanically smart option. As long as they get a few premium arts in the collector boosters who gives a shit what the rest of the set looks like, right? Having all shitty art makes the one nice art chase card even more desirable for the piggies.
>>96684297You say they're overturned for EDH but all these cards are really bad in EDH. Nobody is running Fear if Missing Out in their 99, there's no reason to. None of these cards besides Vivi do what is inherently strong in EDH, pump out mana or creat card advantageThere's overtuned red cards because there was a period of time when the design team went "Red is kind of weak right now" and decided to turn the power level up. When Red OTK combos start popping up, THAT'S when we can blame EDH, because Red in EDH is nothing but storm piles
>>96684304>And these "digital artists" can just make an AI prompt, touch up the imperfections and submit it. They have to get a new set of 200+ cards every 60 daysJesus, this really is slop. they've manged to turn a high fantasy rpg type game into a mass produced, factory line macdonald's card game lol. >>96684370>they've manged to turn a high fantasy rpg type game into a mass produced, factory line macdonald's card game lol"Managed". Like it's at all difficult. Is horrible how hard they dropped the ball with this game. Since last year Magic seems to be just a worse Fornite
>>96684466It is worse because at least Fortnite has sexy women and kids to manipulate.
What's up with the MAGA hat drama? Can anyone clue me in?
if wotc could print lewd images on the cards, they would. And they will once they will get desperate for sales. But they're going to print gay shit (they already did), and once the suits will figure out that the fags aren't a huge market, they'll pander to gooners. You will see this game turn into yet another anime titties gooning skinner box like everything else, boosters are gachas to an extent already.
>>96684488it is exactly as stupid as it sounds, don't bother
>>96684488Magic: the Gathering
>>96684500Magic will never cater to gooners in a competitive way. Even Force of Will does and will continue to be better than MtG and any potential it might have.
>>96684549FoW (and Shadowverse too because fuck that game) are both waifu simulators and they both suck major balls, but have major success. If it wasn't for the anime titties, those games would've never taken off.Wotc already did Hatsune Miku SL, has been doing anime alts by employing jap artists, Japan even has more alternate artworks than in the west, FFub basically made all nips cum in their pants that it revived the game over there,The japanese market is basically all pandering to gooners because no one gives a shit about anything else there. You vill see big huge anime titties in your fornite card game and you vill like it.
There is literally no drawback to putting hot chicks in this game.
The only reason why they wouldn't put hot chicks in the game is because they'd lose support and investments for woke corporates and social justice funds or whatever they're called.Once they start seeing sales across a huge audience without even doing UB slop, they'll quickly forget about trying to pander to crossdressers or sexualizing women.I mean, if they're going to pander to piggys, might as well minmax the shit out of it.
>>96684589gooners need to stop acting like putting tits into the game is guaranteed sales, there's plenty of garbage that tried and failed
>>96684697The difference is that Magic, even in its shit state, still has better gameplay and is more established than all that trash. What is holding it back is horrible balance and gay, childish, shitty art. At least we could have good art.

>>96683964honestly I think we're past the point of no return. the last five years have done irreparable structural damage to the game and the competitive scene. there's no way to ban every card printed after 2019 without pissing at least 60% of the fan base off. I think the best course of action is to just let the game die or continue shambling in zombified fashion until a spiritual successor can start fresh and fix the sins of the past.

>>96685551If they actually care about the competitive scene they can fix it (at least Standard). Announce that all future sets will return to 2 year rotation. Make the next sets severely underpowered, people hated when they tried to do this with Ixalan but the game has shifted in a way that they could pull it off without hurting sales. Lean into printing powerful commander cards that intentionally suck in 1v1, lean into well known IPs for UB that people will buy without caring about strength.
>>96684152Recent creature cards could never have such a flavorful design
>>96682110What about old school 93/94
How to fix magic:>Force all rule boxes to stay within 8 lines of text>White should be the only color to get a 2/1 creature for 1 mana without downsides>Green is the only color that gets vanilla 3/3 mana creatures for only 3 mana>Land destruction is back on the menu>No more cards you can play from exile>No more double face cards>All Artifacts are colorless, but they can have color as a cost of their abilities>No more than 30 legendary creatures per set>Every set from the last 10 years was a fever dream of Karn>Very few cards have 3 or more colors in their mana cost>No more mythic rarity, existing mythic rarers are immediately banned regardless of their strength>Planeswalkers are banned. Wizards is also actively incentivized to print overpowered slop to fuel either investors or destabilize standard. Power levels need to be WAY down, and bans a lot more prevalent. Also, 3 year standard is terrible- it just makes the problems of modern and legacy more apparent but without the answers those formats have.
>>96684093Rhystic isn't even top 10 from Terese. My personal pick for most soulful card art in the game is this but you are correct that the era in general had a lot of good options.

>>96686110That's why they promised a ban after every set. They are about to push the powerlevel even further.
>>96686115Why did they get rid of Guay? I heard a rumour that they fired her during Lorwyn cuz her artwork was "too feminine" or some shit? Seem retarded, but because that's an utterly retarded, completely asinine and illogical reason, I can 100% believe that wizards did that.

>>96686329>polynesianYeah, I'll poly her esian
>>96686229That was the original reason. Currently she raised her prices and doesn't have time for contractor so wizards doesn't hire for just any set. Her protege Sam Guay is her replacement since Sam isn't a big name unlike Rebecca.
>>96686385Sam Guay's art
>>96686229Jeremy Cranford (the art director at the time) thought her work was too feminine, and so she wasn't contracted to do anything for Onslaught. I cast Alexios and then Noetic Scales. I pass my turn. At the start of the opponent's upkeep, whom has 3 cards in hand, there is the trigger to gain Alexios and the trigger to send dues back if they have more power than their hand size. Are they able to just gain control of Alexios, then send it back to my hand with Noetic Scales?
>>96687562Really? I haven't seen anything about them stopping, but most things talking about them working with wizards is dated last year. Not to be a redditor but you got a source for that? I'd think if they cut ties I would have heard about that. They are a bit secretive in what they do (because they know what they do is wrong) but it makes it hard to find credible sources on what theyre actually up to. I hope you're right though because thats at least one step in the right direction (after a thousand wrong ones)
>>96687652if multiple triggers you control happen at once, you can layer them on the stack in the order you like
>>96687717Yeah, I had figured that APNP would just allow them to do that. I was really hoping to find a way to have him get around upkeep triggers.
>>96687652You still control both triggers bevause theyre your cards even if the opponent makes the choice.
