"Buying is an extremely satisfying, macho act."

Previous: >>96672161

This general encompasses all board game genres - Eurogames, Ameritrash, Ameritreasure, Fillers, Party, Abstracts, Wargames, and especially the game that one anon is autistic about at this very moment.

TQs:
- What's the best game in your favorite genre?
- What's your player color of choice ? (red, blue, green, etc)
- What's a game you were surprised to love despite it being outside your usual preferences?

Bonus question:
- What is your favorite auction game?

Yeah I think Voidfall has officially beat out Mage Knight for my favorite solo game. The amount of time I spend thinking about my potential moves when away from the board is ridiculous.

In terms of elegance is system, I’m hard pressed to think of a better designed solo game.

Sakura Arms is the best 2 player card dueler and I will die on that hill alongside my Great Value 2hus

Blue
>What's a game you were surprised to love despite it being outside your usual preferences?
I generally like every genre and don’t have particularly strong preferences, so as long as a game is good in its genre I’ll like it.

how can a complex game be elegant?
>>
>>96695815
Any degree of complexity can be elegant so long as its systems compliment one another and everything seems to serve a purpose.
>>
>>96695920
I disagree. Cruft can serve a purpose and still be inelegant.
>>
>>96695920
Elegant means clever but simple. Simple is the opposite of complex, therefore, a complex game can't be elegant.
>>
I'm finally bankrupt. I still have a few bucks left, so fuck it. What's the best game I can buy for $44?
>>
>>96695962
Surely a “complex game” can be a combination of simple elegant systems and thus be elegant?

Also when did you mongoloids conflate simplicity and elegance? The idea that complexity and elegance are mutually exclusive is just a bizarre position. For example, the US interstate is a complex, elegant system.
>>
>>96695938
Complexity and cruft are two different things.

You have no clue what elegance means. You just use it as a buzzword for "game I like".
>>
Every simple game better be elegant or they’re dogshit.
Every complex game cannot be elegant by definition but it doesn’t matter because compelled games are better than simple ones about 90% of the time

They're usually bloated and tedious to play.

Wow, it's almost like the english dictionary doesn't contain half the lingo used when talking about board games. Now stop using deckbuilder or dudes on a map because they're not in the dictionary or stop being a faggot and accept some words change meaning or acquire a meaning only in a specific, niche context.
Faggot.
>>
>>96696065
No, you don’t understand. “Simple” is relative to the goal. There are “elegant” mathematical proofs that nonetheless require dozens of steps to arrive at their conclusions. What makes them elegant is that they are the simplest solution to the goal. The simplicity is relative. If a board game is attempting to intertwine a variety of systems so that each pull of a lever in one system intentionally spins a dial on a different system in a harmonious way geared towards some outcome, there can be a simple solution to that, even if, like those mathematical proofs, there are a series of steps to get there. You, in fact, are using simplicity as a buzzword for “I can set this up in five minutes.”
>>
>>96696153
Don't seethe. Learn how words are actually used, dumb-dumb. Embarrassing.
>>
>>96696031
>For example, the US interstate is a complex, elegant system.
Then why does Hawaii have interstates?
>>
>>96696160
I'm not seething, I see you as a faggot and I call you one. There's no anger in me, just disgust and dismissal. Now learn to speak boardgames or fuck off.
>>
>>96696157
Simple refers to gameplay. If a game has 20 interconnected systems, multiple goals and paths to victory, point salad fest, takes 2-3 hours to play, has a million moving pieces, and a 4+ weight, then objectively that's not a simple game, and therefore not an elegant game.
>>
>>96696170
You're seething so bad and it's plain to see, that's why you're resorting to insults. Maybe your husband is cheating on you, maybe you lost your job recently. But there's a level of negativity about you, so I'll be praying for you, Anon.

Elegance, like many other things, is a spectrum, it's not a binary state so it's not either "elegant" or "not elegant"
So even in the context of so called "complex games" there can be some "complex games" that are more "elegant" than some other "complex games"
As an example, I've tried Vinhos recently, and for a Lacerda, it is relatively elegant compared to his other games
>>

>Space Jews (Hacan, Nomad, Empyrean, <Firmament>)
>Turn Order Abusers (Yssaril, Naalu, <Ral Nel>)
>Space Nerds (Jol'nar and <Deepwrought>)
>Meme Strats (Saar, Muatt, Winnu, Ghosts)
>And the rest (NRA, Arborec, Yin, <Red Ghosts>)
>>
>>96696157
NTA but while I don’t hate this explanation I think it does muddy an already difficult thing to quantify. By that definition I’d say all but the heaviest eurogames that are just playable Rube Goldberg machines could be considered “elegant”. Ameritrash and wargames in particular could have mountains of rules and could still be considered “elegant” given the goal of those games is to simulate a particular theme, and theme naturally requires complexity.
>>
>>96696238
If you were telling the truth you would have said
>As an example: I've tried Vinhos recently and, for a Lacerda, it is elegant

Now go back, foul beast on the waters.

>>

The worst offender in your sentence was relatively. You would not need to conjugate relative to an adverb if elegant was implicitly relative.

>>96696238
Even sex isn't binary. It's just really, really, really bimodal to the point that no faggot arguing about gender theory or whatever is going to have an argument nuanced enough to need that acknowledged. And so it is with this. This one anon who constantly whines about people using "buzzwords" he doesn't like is full of shit and you don't need to do this song and dance to appease them. He doesn't appreciate elegance, he gobbles up slop, you're allowed to say it.

>>
>>96696245
I agree but I also think that elegance is already mired in subjectivity. It comes down to the question: even if this game has big goals that may require many systems, are the systems as simple (or close to as simple) as they can be to achieve those goals? Some euros are bloated even if they are geared towards complex goals (and are thus not elegant). In my opinion, Voidfall, while complex, is nonetheless elegant because its many systems are close to as simple as they can be to achieve what the game is trying to do.

Of course, this also hinges on the subjective question: What is the game trying to do?

Still, all I’m trying to say is that complex games can be elegant because the simplicity of their systems is relative to what’s being attempted. Hopefully that came across.

It's also the only 1v1 auction game I know of. Not in the vein of Raccoon Tycoon where you CAN play 1v1 but it is designed around being a 1v1 auction game.
>>
>>96696885
He self-published a lot of low budget games under the brand Cheapass Games. But he also designed a fair number of games for more reputable publishers. The best known game he worked on is Lords of Vegas but the game most people remember him for is Kill Doctor Lucky.
>>
>>96696815
The appeal is deterministic puzzle and navigating the crisis cards that are thrown your way. Its best attribute is not being dependent on luck. If you like that, and you like crunchy puzzles, you’ll like Voidfall. If you like Mage Knight for the gameplay and beyond the theme itself, it’s one id look into. If you prefer solo games dependent on high stakes dice rolls, it’s absolutely not for you.

It's fine. It depends on your tolerance for semi-coops. It's basically an improved Catan style civ builder with an emphasis on combat and a big enemy expanding from the center who will usually wreck your shit. I noticed the 3 times we played that the lazy player who tried to piggyback off everyone else and avoid the BBG did not do well, I appreciated that. It's undercooked. The devs didn't find a way to make all systems click and just decided to release the unfinished game and then add their failed attempts for correction as expansions.

I'm obsessed with fixing the game. I can feel that there's something to it, but my brain is not large enough to fix it.
Only thing I found is to categorize the tool cards and use one from each category. It makes the tools far less likely to be completely useless, but they still feel tacked on to the core game. And the core game itself is too bland to have lasting appeal outside of the theme.

It's a point salad where each action gives you a point, but you need to align 3 points.
You acquire each point via an auction-like system where the first person who claims a space puts their acquired point in this space.
If you consider the 3x3 grid as a map, it's thus a dudes on a map game.

e-"sport" players like the ones in dota don't play the game for fun, they play because it is their job

>>
>>96701599
>it would suck the fun out of board games
Do you really think there's any fun left in MPS that they could suck out?

>>96701618
if you're using "MPS" according to /bgg/'s definition of it (i.e, any game that does not involve directly punching others in the face, meaning more than like 80%+ of all board games ever), yes
if you're using "MPS" according to the actual definition, there's no risk of e-sport MPS happening because there'd be no viewers. No viewership = no prize pool
but let's be honest, there wouldn't be much viewership for any given boardgame anyway regardless of what it is
all this to say that e-sport boardgaming would be just straight up retarded, just stick to BGA if you want le mmr le elo bullshit
and for the record, i've participated in small tournaments organized for fun in communities and won a couple games for free, but that's entirely different from e-sport crap

good for you having people you know and like in an already formed group. even when I had that (pre-covid) we would go to the flgsses for atmosphere, events or just sometimes because nobody's house was available for hosting that night. the goal of a meetups or game store board game events are to meet new people, try new games and find the good ones that you're willing to then have into your home. non-autistic people understand you don't have to practice it to understand the concept and purpose.

forget what it's called but in each square of the main board is a smaller board. you opponent has to play in the main board where you last played in the smaller board. it's essentially 10 games at once but you can actually control some things. it's not great, no re-imagining ever is, but it's way less tedious than playing tic-tac-toe.
