I haven't heard a single store where standard is booming, but obviously wotc has this secret data that shows otherwise
>>96772233My condolences; Masquerena addiction is a hard thing to shake.
That data is probably hidden in the nebraska ecosystem
>>96772237>That seems pretty good. Is Genesys getting traction?Tons where I'm at. It's not the most popular format, but considering the game has literally two formats (OG and Genesys) the breath of fresh air is getting more than enough excitement around it.Konami is regularly updating the format by culling any OTKs that pop up too. They show a lot of commitment to making sure it's good. Not that it isn't still a combo format, but YGO is still THE combo card game so that is what it is. It cuts out all the worst parts of the game and punishes you for playing any degenerate pieces that survived, at least.
>>96772255infernobleisolde and the L1 charles were kind of crucial to the deck
>>96772249>While that's a great start, what about the synchro and xyz cancer? It's handled with a point system.Cards cost points. Every deck gets 100 points. The most degenerate cards get slapped with 100 point costs to de facto ban them. The big titans of Synchro/XYZ usually get hit with 81 point costs so you can technically run them, but you're sacrificing hand traps (~5-15 points per) or pot of greeds (30 points) for example if you want to.And even then, most of the best archetypes get their core pieces cut. The main engines of Atlanteans, for example, got slapped with a point cost of 40 each. You are left with some of the cancer, but that's just how the game is.>Are they at least mode locking so you can't do rainbow decks and have to stick to a theme?Honestly? Yes. The point totals do a great job of exactly this. Since the core pieces for an archetype often soak up your points, you can't really get away with best-of overtuned slop piles. Dedicated synergies with 0-point support pieces matter a lot more.
>>96772253The last standard store championship I played (2022) at a pretty big LGS (Clockwork Games and Events) we only had 4 people and couldn’t run it. They just gave us all the participation and top 8 promos, refunded us, and kept the winner promo. Standard was pretty much only ever us 4 and really only if there were promos being offered. We got it to fire one other time by bribing somebody.

Don't worry everyone, Magic is saved!
Imagine being some management idiot at WotC.>the FF set broke all records and expectations>positive feedback all over the place, people loved it>everything crashes and burns with the Marvel shitHow do you even begin to explain that?
>>96772367I do find it baffling that they seem to be treating each IP as if it’s equally potent and that their first “test” of the concept of UB (mechanically unique secret lair with no guarantee of ever being printed again) was a proper control for how it would be received in the future.
>>96772367>How do you even begin to explain that?It is the players who are at fault, clearly. They just have Superhero fatigue. It's their fault, not ours.

>>96772374>they seem to be treating each IP as if it’s equally potentThey're clearly not. FF got higher prices and way more marketing, they knew it would be a moneymaker. Spider-Man and AC were smaller sets because they knew the potential was lower. SPE has a fuckton of treatments because the set is aimed at collectors, not regular players.
>>96772394>They're clearly not. FF got higher prices and way more marketing, they knew it would be a moneymaker.Noting that marketing budgets are never included into production budgets, one questions whether FF is actually the most profitable set as they claim.I would like to see those figures adjusted for marketing budget. As you mentioned, the marketing for that set was extremely overblown and no doubt one of the reasons for its """"success""""

>>96773346>I find it strange that FF set records but spiderman flopped, I feel like Spiderman is such a bigger property. How big a property is does not matter. What matters is the cross section of (insert property here) and Magic: The Gathering.FF paypiggies are the exact type of people who would leap at the opportunity to be an MTG paypiggie. The problem with Spiderman is: How much of an idiot would you have to be, to both love Spiderman and spend several thousand dollars one some random ass FOMO garbage, instead of spending the same amount of money on an original print comic book? The more potential money sinks a property has, the less appealing it will be to engage with to people who have the money to do so. Final Fantasy previously only had digital assets, original game discs and some modestly collectible figurines. Original discs are really only collectables to old school hardware patricians, so the set didn't have much in-IP competition.

>>96773434No, and it hasn't been for some time. Does Arena have lots of players? Yes - however, the vast majority of the playerbase are F2P who simply do their daily gold quests and the occasional draft with their accumulated gold (still the best way to get more cards).

>>96773469Boosters or otherwise "random" products are not considered gambling since they put all the pull rates on product and there is also guaranteed pulls from a fixed pool of cards and the product is tangible. With loot boxes it was pure rng gambling mostly from a massive pool of prizes, of which most are worthless and it doesn't justify their price, especially because none of the prices in digital lootboxes have any real value.

>>96774771WotC has to pay licensing fees or whatever and they naturally pass that right on to the consumer.
>>96774771Because people will still pay for it. If they lose half the sales but their profit margin is tripled, they've made more money. It's basic economics.

>>96774485You know I checked the wiki to see the last set Mark led the design for and it was actually worse than I thought. His last 5 sets were>Aetherdrift>OTJ>MKM>LCI>ONE/MOM>Bonus: UNFLiterally 0/5. All these sets were fucking terrible.

I see no reason to keep playing. Of all the sets next year lorwyn is the only one I'm interested in but I'm not going to cry if I skip it. Me continuing playing means skipping every UB set, but even then to play competently I have to play against UB cards, which means looking at diarrhea and knowing what it does. I don't give a fuck what any spider man and avatar cards do and I'm not going to read then. So I'm out. I was a very active standard player but the moment they released the 2025 schedule with all the UB it felt like well, I guess I'm not going to be playing anymore. For me to NOT quit, the following would need to happen:1. All future UB sets removed from standard2. Spider man and final fantasy removed from standardThat's it. But that will not happen, so I'm done. It was really, really fun while it lasted, I had a great time from when I picked it back up with OTJ until edge of eternites. I like the goofy in-universe sets, honestly I thought they were creative and fun. But that's it for me. Will continue monitoring the crash from the sidelines. Good luck everybody.

>>96775869max speed is actually the worst proprietary mechanic ever released in a magic set. how it works is so unbelievably clunky that the only reason I can think of for it being so bad is sabotage. >takes 4 turns of dealing damage to a player (typically spells death in a 60 card deck if you can find an opening to deal damage four separate times) before it does anything>have to have start your engines on the field so you can’t do it early>no cascading buffs, only get something at MAX SPEED>no way to speed up a mechanic called MAX SPEED>just have to trudge your way through FOUR ENTIRE TURNS of breaking your opponent’s defenseits absolutely incompetent, there’s no way this was greenlit playtested and shipped unless it was bad on purpose
The data is meaningless as long as scalpers and investors still buy it

>>96775952here's the OG
>>96775952There is a crudely drawn comic in which Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion is depicted drawing a fursona of herself, to which Shinji from Neon Genesis Evangelion says something in the vein of “is that your fursona? Fucking cringe.”Asuka snaps back in the next panel by yelling, “YOU’RE CRINGE.”A dejected Shinji reflects on this comment, and then is shown crying in the bathroom in front of a mirror. The comic has spawned several derivatives with different characters, and in this one Urabrask’s “fursona” is Koth, and the rebuff of Jin’s insult caused the same distress as was wrought on Shinji when he invoked Asuka’s ire.Although I don’t speak metallic fleshy abomination so I can’t tell you what they exactly changed the dialogue to.

Everything after was just other poop in the pile of shit.BTW I think it would have been ok if they did the tech in kamigawa be an hybrid of bio-spiritual&tech but some of the gundams there are pure tech. That is how we spot the shit-hack writters: people who are unable to respect what others have done before them when continuing a story.

Does anybody around here play auction draft? Apparently, back in 2020 some scientists won a Nobel Prize for designing a new type of auction called "simultaneous multiple-round auction", and IMO it seems extremely applicable to MTG.In an SMR auction: A bunch of items are put up simultaneously. Each bidder is required to submit a bid on each item. Then the bids are revealed. For each item, a losing bidder can either raise his bid or withdraw from the bidding on that specific item. This continues for multiple rounds. Once all losing bidders have withdrawn from the bidding on all items, the auction ends, with the highest bidder on each item getting that item.SMR auctions are applied to government sales of wireless frequencies in the telecoms field, which often are worth more together than separately due to synergies. Obviously, similar concerns apply to MTG. With this auction type, you can bid for both parts of a combo simultaneously, rather than bidding on one part and hoping that the other part will be available later. It's easy to imagine an "SMR Auction Draft" format that consists of three separate auctions, one for each play booster.https://mtg.wiki/page/Auction_Drafthttps://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/economic-sciences/2020/popular-information/https://news.stanford.edu/stories/2020/10/economic-science-behind-wilsons-milgroms-nobel-prizehttps://www.cambridge.org/core/books/abs/market-design/simultaneous-multiround-auction-format/68C91F82D152A6A9995852AFA7FEB966
