I don't use an airbrush but I mask up and ventilate a small room with two open windows and fans when I cut xps foam with my hot wire cutter. I do this even though the manufacturers say its perfectly fine to breath the fumes as long as you are in a vented room.
I don't trust manufacturers when they say things because I work in manufacturing. For instance I make things for food grade packaging and alot of the chemicals involved in the process are no where near food grade acceptable but since the residuals in the end product are below what is unacceptable for food grade it is considered "food grade" packaging. I imagine this is how all manufacturing rates their product safety and I imagine it's far worse when you are getting products manufactured from China or Taiwan.

Drybrushed this guy fur, I think I should use darker shade as base coat, even with wash he looks quite bright compared to his intended rider. Still, would you go even brighter with his fur or leave him as this? Started with drybrushing what I used as base shade (Grey Blue), then mixed it a bit with Snow Blue, then pure Snow Blue and finished with White Grey.
>>
>>96775018
>manufacturers tell you to just open the window/door
>professional artist tells you to just open the window/door
>multiple generations of artists who never bothered to use a mask and they were all fine
>>
>>96775059
there have been multiple generations of slavs working in foundries without masks but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. does putting a fan in the window and wearing a mask somehow make it harder to paint? can you not afford the $40 expense? or do you have some kind of ocd where wearing something on your face makes you sperg out? it amazes me that people who are too scared to even brush paint enamels because of "toxic chemicals" are also completely unwilling to take even effortless precautions when it comes to airbrushing.
>>
>>96775133
If you push that goalpost a bit further, it will be in a different time zone. That's what I'm saying, just open the window (like the manufacturer tells you to, and what artists did for ages now). There's no need to act like acrylic paint is a fine dust straight from Chernobyl reactor.
>>
>>96775133

>>
>>96775153

NTA but I don't trust manufacturers at all. To go back to my post here >>96774849
With the food grade chemicals, some of them are dyes which are supposed to have no things like lead or mercury in them. I'm not privy to the quality control reports of the chemical company that makes the dyes but our water treatment part of our process does have mercury and lead residuals in it. Where it comes from, who knows, but mercury and lead were in dyes forever up until recently.
I wouldn't trust a manufacturer of non toxic paints to be non toxic.
>>
>>96775225
Then use the redditor setup for all I care.
>>
>>96775153
it's aerosolized plastic. even if there are no vocs you should understand that breathing in particulates isn't a good habit. I wear a dust mask when I'm doing woodworking just because breathing sawdust sucks.
>>
>>96775232
You do seem to care.
Just throwing my two cents out there that manufacturers tend to be cute with guidelines on what is healthy for people and it's done with a wink and a now with the government typically.
>>
>>96775133
Mask is enough, no point in keeping window open. I don't know how it works in your place of living, mine have temperatures outside below 10C for 2/3 of the year. I would go bankrupt for trying to keep temperature inside room warm with window open for entire painting time. But this whole discussion is pointless since it was solved long time ago - paint particles are small but not THAT small and heavy enough to stay in air only for a short time. Pro artists knows how to control their stream so whatever that fails to land on the model is landing on table or is low in amount to be neglectable. If you would spray with some absurd pressures like 3 bar and into cardboard box, you could see over spray bouncing back but you usually keep pressure below 2 bars anyway where it's not a issue. Don't believe me? Set up light source and see for yourself. P3 mask will handle anything that could bounce back, if you are that worried. What you could actually require ventilation are lacquers due to fumes but if you spray acrylics, it's completely fine.

Now, why is Reddit and by extention social media spreading the fear? Because they don't fucking understand what they are doing and parrot each other, trying to sound smart. Go ahead and ask one of them about thinning paints. In 90% cases they will start talking about "milk consistency" they heard about in one of videos/etc but will never, EVER be able to explain what it actually means and more importantly, WHY they do this. Or how many Gunpla builders would insist on applying gloss layer over paint, then apply panel lining and then matt/satin coat but would be unable to explain why, just "that's how it should be done" (it's really about how wash is next to impossible to clean from matt surface while piss easy to wipe from glossy, even surface).

He's likely not there yet (I don't have an airbrush myself..), for now I taught him to do a basecoat, wash and drybrush+highlights for a quick result and to learn some basic techniques- although I encourage him to try different recipes and experiment since he's painting several intercessors which are good to learn and test things on. Alright, it's probably stupid question but - in airbrushes with threaded nozzle, I would screw nozzle first and then slowly insert needle from the back until it stops at nozzle itself, ensuring that its in right position. But how should I insert the needle in case of airbrush with so called "floating" nozzle?
>>
>>96776862
same way, the only difference is that the nozzle is kept in palce by the nozzle cap instead

I did get a wash medium for the black lining but frankly it didn't really make a difference. It was a bit more efficient than the water but otherwise I didn't feel much of a difference.
I used agrax and camoshade for the xv25.

I’m going to paint the blues first. I won’t actually highlight the blue until the red and pink base coats are completed. The teeth and talons will be at the end. I’ll paint the base near the end as well. The final step is going to be glossing the tongues and red sections

into the trash it goes, acrylic paint becomes plastic when it dries, you are not going to undo that process

The helmet is the most specific thing about it, but it's also almost too much in a sense. Like giving a Space Wolf Blackshield a Wolf helmet. Nobody else had that style. But as the same time the color scheme really did the heavy lifting for the thousand sons, so once it's all painted black the helmet alone might not even click with people, especially if hidden behind a gorget.
I was thinking maybe some of those shoulderpads with the rims the HH resin kits had would be another subtle clue. Not exactly subtle, but if you want more flavor you could give him a force-kopesh instead of a staff. That way people will probably know exactly what it is, even when he is wearing black.

Oof, I didn't realize how wobbly the spear on the standing girl was.
Overall really nice though. Could maybe do some more shading/highlighting on the wolf/fox/thing's fur. They all look good though.
>>
>>96782048
In theory I could again attempt to straighten it (already did before assembly but it just returned to bendy form for some reason) but don't know if hairdryer wouldn't damage the paint (mind you, it's European one, not heatgun people use in US).

I'm not sure if I could highlight fur more, it was already drybrushed with white grey in the end, I'm afraid I should had started with darker color as a base.

Their stuff look good and I'm sure it's good quality but it's far too expensive for some 3rd party resin prints. It's basically GW prices.

Actually, let me correct myself, it's definitely more expensive than GW.

NTA but I also use soap (not liquid, the solid one) to clean my brushes after use, from time to time also clean them with shampoo and they are just fine.

Need some technical support.

So, I’d heard here that Badger Stynlrez primer was pretty decent, so I picked some up when I needed more primer. I found it worked great on the mini, but it would rapidly clog up my airbrush. I tried thinning it with some Vallejo airbrush thinner I had sitting around, and this is the result I get: an incredibly smooth, glossy primer coat that ends up not taking paint well - too smooth!

Any advice on whether I should be thinning the primer with something else - water, rubbing alcohol, or? Or should I suck it up or try boosting the pressure on my air compressor and power through it?

looks like you flooded the thing, primer should be a thin coat
can't speak for stynylrez but when i prime i thin as little as i can get away with, if any, and use like 30psi
>>
>>96782211
If you wash hair too often it dries out and fucks up the ability to hold a point. Brush soap is a literal scam. Just use a little dish soap if you've drowned a brush in something and need to rescue it. Otherwise stick to water.

Eldfall Chronicles, Wayfarers pack. Indie skirmish game. I picked it up solely for painting since I wanted to try doing some fantasy minis for a change. My LGS seems to be really into it recently (understandable since they were very Infinity focused for quite some time, Eldfall is pretty much fantasy Infinity and unlike Warcrow, minis are all Unicool instead of Siocast which means good details instead of rubbery mess).
>>
>>96782297
Oh you mean brush soap, not normal one. Yeah, I don't think it makes sense to use or buy one, I asked at art shop and they couldn't say what actually makes it different from normal soap and some art student girl giggled a bit after hearing the question and said she clean her brushes in literal dishwashing liquid and they are just fine. A little too much for my taste so I follow my mother approach - normal bar soap at the end of the day with proper rinse and occasionally woman's shampoo treatment.

I also have small bottle of Vallejo "brush cleaning solution" which is supposed to not damage natural hair but I'm not entirely convinced as it smells a bit like alcohol.
