>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd,
HeroClix, Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

Funnily enough, Frostgrave actually got a new artist for the new edition.

1st edition and its expansions are Dmitry and Kate Burmak, 2nd edition is a guy called ªRU-MOR
>>

Anyone with Paulb Booner or Adrian smith.
I really like warmachine, if it wasn0t for the pauldroncore and cartoony proportions.
Hell I love a lot of warmachine and hate a lot whole bunch, so close to good.

With that name, I can sense the chunin. Hell, sounds like slav chunin, the most try hard of them all.

It's very plausible fantasy, something you could see in a world with orcs or elfs, to exist, very down to earth.
>>
>>96806902
Is Oathmark alternating activation? Looking for something where both players are constantly being active for kids and teens to play as part of my job.
>>
>>96807153
Yeah it's alternating activation. Commander units allow multiple unit to activate at the same time.
>>
>>96807356
Thank you. Trying to keep so-called "troubled" students focused on something that is not a Tik Tok video is surprisingly hard. Still, if I can help the kids I damn well do whatever it takes. I'll even use my own money for minis and paints if it means maybe, just maybe getting kids to sit down and do some constructive hobby work of their own choice.

Oathmark is very simple too, it only took me 30 mins to teach my boomer dad to play and the math for figuring stuff out can be all done in the head.
>>
>>96798765
Fair enough. I just think you are overthinking this.
>anon brings up solo gaming as a saving grace
>I ask what is the best solo game
At this point I know whatever answer I get will just be one opinion and may not translate to my own taste. This should be common understanding. I don’t preface everything I say with
>what in your opinion is the best _____
I simply ask you what is best. And I know it’s just your opinion. I could have been more specific about my own preferences but I’m curious what other people like most. I’ll try most games. I look to expand. I enjoy complex as much as casual. Five Leagues/Parsecs assuming those were your recommendations I will give them a shot. I have heard of them before but I didn’t actually know they were solo games. I like the idea of playing solo.
>>
>>96808998
Five Parsecs is fun anon. I mean the actual tabletop wargame isn't going to blow your socks off but it's just the fun of all the d100 charts and making a story and all that
>>
>>96809730
I’ll try parsecs first then. It’s funny even though I consider sci fi to be my preferred genre I tend to read, paint, and play fantasy much more. This will give me a good chance to do so. Tell me about your aliens they look cool.
>>
>>96804587

>>96808776
Thank you, Anon. I'm trying to help kids so they do not end up as much of a fuckup as I was/am. As an added bonus, it gives them a non-screen hobby and I get the added bonus of playing games with fresh players.

Fallout Wasteland warfare is actually the best, content and rule wise. The "five..." Games are good in that regard that you can homebrew them easily to suit your very specific needs better. But they are still very basic in the gameplay department. But fallout is the more complex and complete experience

We played WH skirmish back in le day so it is a nice thing to do together. I have a smattering of Frostgrave stuff and WGA stuff like Town Guards so it shouldn't be too hard to get something happening.

Wouldn't mind using some other Renaissance models in sympathetic colour schemes but might not be necessary, trying to have a lean 2026 instead of consooming.

I feel you, senpai.I'm buying the last missing pieces for my ancient Greek/Successors armies and focus on trimming down my collection next year. I have a LOT of shit I bought on the secondary market for cheap like WW2 1:35 vehicles to convert for alternative wargames but with every passing season it becomes more and more clear I won't finish 90% of the projects I had in mind at some point.
>>
>>96812035
Is there a huge difference between Wasteland Warfare and Fallout Factions? Is it just a new edition?
>>
For those of you playing Conquest, I'm reading the 2.0 version of conquest legends but I'm confused about how Reknown Levels work. The pdf says they get the benefits and abilities indicated in the Reknown Level Chart but all I see is starting levels for units. Am I missing something or am I retarded?

Am I hallucinating here

So there's the game Guards of Traitor's Toll which released with plastic sprues of not-quite modular miniatures, because there's a real variety in body shapes and sizes.

But then at the same time, Wargames Atlantic or someone also released some plastic "Town Guards"?
>>
>>96813990
The Wargames Atlantic Town Guards ARE the plastics for Guards of Traitor's Toll. WGA worked out a deal to produce the sprues for Grey for Now games and to sell them as independent boxes because they make good RPG fodder.

They also did the plastics for GFN's WW2 infiltration game 0600 Hours, which is why you can buy plastics Nazis with guard dogs.

I meant specifically this set, which was also the core of the 0600 starter. Grey for Now also has metal character figures available, but their starter set was done in plastic, I assume to make a more attractive purchase.

>Ameridumb zoomie so scared of his trans girlfriend (male) accusing him of looking at her without consent on Xitter he honestly believes the rest of the planet is not capable of having a reasonable and healthy attitude towards sexuality
What a cringe take. The fact you are not able to handle something doesn't make it a degeneracy. I'm sorry you were born into a Puritan hellhole but you have no one to blame but yourself for not outgrowing the idiocy of your local community.
>>

It's certainly not the best on a technical level but I really appreciate Quar going for something nobody else has with its whimsical watercolor muppet rendition of WW1

Covering females is way more degenerate shit than showing tits in public.
>>
>>96814219
Exactly. Warrior women only exist in buzzfeed articles.
>>
>>96812611
You're not retarded. That's a holdover from the 1.5 version of the rules, which were more fleshed out for narrative play, but only had entries up through Wadrhun releases. Since the jump to 2.0, the Narrative system has fallen behind in updates, and is currently in limbo.

There are apparently plans to eventually do a proper overhaul for the narrative system, as there are quite a few people asking for it to be brought up to speed, but it's currently on the back burner for some reason or another.

1. The only issue there is the all female warband in a historical game
2. Naked berserkers are fine
3. That's a decent paintjob, and female armies are fine to field

This. Factions was literally written by the writer of Necromunda. Its gangs or raiders and other, well, factions of the wasteland fighting against each other.
You could do the same with Wasteland Warfare, but its focus is clearly the rpg-lite-ish aspect, potentially solo, in which you explore the wasteland and evolve your characters.

Search "wargaming 90 degree arc widget", they're all over the place.
Or buy a cheap arc template from an art supply store (they cost a few dollars). Mark off a 28mm arc and a 40mm one. Use a protractor to cut a 90-degree angle on the sides.

Warlord's Project Z game had a box of biker gang guys on hawgs. Not quite what you're looking for, and it's OOP, but it's the only plastic motorcycles I'm aware of in 28mm. Which of course means Wargames Atlantic somehow has a kit in the works for Q3 of 2027 and Warlord will announce their new Bolt Action box in Q1 2028, going by past experience.
If you're willing to skip the plastic, though, Hot Wheels and Matchbox motorcycles are in "box scale". Which usually makes them roughly 28mm. Same goes for a lot of their other really small things like golf carts and some trailers. Unless it's a crazy collectors' item most cost a buck or two at worst, less if you're willing to root through bins at the local thrift shop/swap meet/antique store. There are even snow-bike chasses you could strip to make kettekrad if you felt like it.

It's all right. I like the minis. The game itself somehow feels like a boardgame without the grid, if that makes sense. Too many meta-mechanics like the teleporting killer and manipulating the toggling lights. Fits for the genre, feels weird for a skirmish game

Thank you. I was hoping to discover a new, plastic mech/walker but plum out of luck this time.

Funny to see /btg/ posted. I recognize your backdrop from that, but stopped going there years back when the jannies refused to ban that Anon who was showing off his ass and using the general like Grindr.

Does anybody still play Guild Ball? Was thinking about this game recently, I know it's a dead game in that no more content is coming out for it, but it does look like it's still getting some balance patches even this year, and the models are still for sale on the website in a 3d print on demand service. I always did love the game, it just wasn't a very good product, they couldn't really make money off of it or make it grow the way they wanted.

Does anybody still play this anywhere, or is it truly actually completely dead?

For me, Trench Crusade is quite a fascinating one.

It's incredibly popular. But it's not really /awg/ types like you and me.

It's nu40k doomscrollers who don't even know what 28mag is.

I wonder how Tuomas feels about it all, deep down.

Not Tuomas, but I like a lot of the modular STLs the game inspired. These fatties were neat, a few build options and restraint on the details.
>>
>>96821205
>I wonder how Tuomas feels about it all, deep down.

You are ascribing way too much to the "kind" of person who plays a certain game. I'm pretty sure Tuomas is very excited by the success they've had and suffering many late nights working.

Fwiw weird war leaves me pretty cold, and despite giving the lore a good listen it didn't do much for me but if you're putting energy into identifying and complaining about "hipster wargamers," it's not going into your own hobby. There is morr than a sliver of irony in the need to be a human sorting algo, but never sorting through your pile.

TC is the definition of a very successful new game, which is probably why they are charging a lot of money for eight dudes.

If they have more kits people will probably lap it up. I have less than zero interest in it but good for them
>>
>>96821205
This is true. The only person who has tried to talk to me about Trench Crusade is my 40kuck WAACfag brother. He has never played a single game that isn't 40k. He was very excited about Trench Crusade and texted me about it. When I mentioned it was made by the same guy as Mordheim he had no idea what Mordheim even was.
>>
>>96821709
Agreed. Its setting and lore does not really interest me, but at the same time, its interesting to see how it evolves from just a couple of neat artworks.
They basically released it just a the right time too.
>>
>>96821925
So, have you played TC with him or not?
>>
>>96821961
Definitely not. I enjoy narrative games, scenarios, campaigns, etc. and his 40k mentality makes him incapable of playing those without metagaming, so I avoid playing with him usually. Once a year we have a family 40k tournament where we play a four way free for all (using 7e) and we all usually gang up on him so he doesn't get to take home the 40k plaque for the year.
>>
>>96821997

Why are they like this?
>>
>>96822010
Popular games typically attract the worst kinds of players and in larger amounts. It's just like how in mtg you are more likely to encounter a sweaty try hard who lies about his deck then someone who wants to just play and have fun with others in a competitive game.
>>
>>96822035

I've heard MTG players are even worse than the 40k crowd.
>>
>>96822164
They're pretty equivalent. That rumor is usually spread by Warhammies trying to save face
>>
>>96822220
I think it's just that MTG as a game allows more whales pack into smaller space, which makes body odor problems so much worse. Tabletop wargaming forces you to get up and move around a little, which means ever stinkbomb has a little more area to disperse.
>>
>>96804587
That weapon should be bigger.
>>
>>96822553
Its irl weapon, its proportions are limited by reality and common sense.
But yeah they could put something more fun on them like smaller cannons.
>>
>>96822382
If you wanna talk about body odor problems, look into YGO. People were literally trying to weaponize body odor to get an advantage in tournaments. Shit got so bad official tournament rules had to be amended to address the issue.
>>
>>96821997
What narrative campaigns do you play with them?

Is there anything mantic can’t do?
>very cheap, but mediocre quality models
>raise your prices so you’re barely cheaper than GW
>model quality stays the same, and ancient sculpts like Basileans and elves still exist
>make all of your metal/resins STLs only, locking out options for factions if you don’t own a printer
>make your STL buying process utterly cancerous by locking minis in unrelated packs
>make your ‘free rules’ almost unplayable by locking core concepts in the paid version
>obsessed with ‘Frontier’ funding which just encourages whales
>abandon games and churn out even more (most of Armada has been out of stock on their site for ages)

Anon, be reasonable. Tabletop games are niche in the grand scheme of things. A lot of the market share is already taken by GW. Few people left to play AWG. If the game offers ready-made models that you just need to paint, it lowers the barrier of entry.
Surely, more people to play with is a good thing?
I personally love to kitbash, made my own Mordheim crew this way. So what, nobody else in my mid-sized city can be bothered to do so. The game's dead for me. I'd much rather play againts identical monopose teams than not play at all...

TC is just grimslop for people that cry about GW wokeness and call models slathered in nuln oil "grimdark".

It sells the aesthetics of stuff like 28mag in a much simpler package where the player doesn't need to be inconvenienced by kitbashing, sculpting and the likes, it's all ready to be drowned in contrast paint. Babby's first alt wargame for 40kids.

I feel like Franchina saw the chance to capitalise on his artworks, which were just part of his portfolio, and pulled Tuomas just for his cred as a rules writer. The game is a weird mismatch; on one hand, massed trench warfare in art and setting, whilst on the other, Mordheim-like rules on a very small scale, it's a strange choice.

I don't dislike either of the creatives, but I feel they just don't work well enough together.

>pic related
God, that grassy base is sexy

>>96821709
>hipster wargamers
Funnily enough, I'd say it tries to repackage the "hipster wargamer" vibe for mass appeal. Not a complaint either, just an admitedly idiotic observation.

>>96825159
>I'd much rather play againts identical monopose teams than not play at all.
A sad truth. At the end of the day, I can't bitch too loud about TC if it makes people try games outside of the GW hegemony.
>>
Played a game of Malediction over the weekend, actually had a pretty good time. Honestly not a fan of it being so focused around 3D printing the models but the starter boxes come with standees and templates for scenery which I appreciate. Gets the game on the table while I sort out finding out how to get the actual models, since I don't 3D print and don't have the space or interest to start.
The card game half of it works pretty well when I thought it might be a bit cumbersome. My only real complaint after literally one game is that it feels like it might be a too fast. Game is to 25 points and a the objectives ("Relics") are worth 10 (4 of them on the board) and models dying rewards the opponent their cost in points

Jokes on you, I'm actually midway through making a Slaaneshi Rapenaught. Lore wise a Deanonette accidentally git stuck in the machine and the warband was never able to extract her. So they just left her in the machine as it slowly turned into a rapey deamon engine.

Idk this looks pretty cool.
I like that they try to do their own thing. I cannot see myself getting into 4th KOW though because of price and a desire to see elves, dwarves, undesd and orcs get a little bit of a refresh. It is happening afaik but later in this edition. Discussions about elves are already taking place, again they want to take them away from just being warhammer proxies and have them with different mounts and equipment and lore and styling.

The model quality has improved a lot, just not enough to judtify near gw prices
