So I soaked this in simple green all night and went at it with a toothbrush. It did literally nothing to the primer. The spots that are removed are from a prior soak in 91% IPA and going at it with a combination of toothbrush, q-tip, and toothpick. Does simple green not work on Primer or something? I thought this was the standard for stripping models bare. It's primed with AP black in case that makes any difference.
Started on my red witches. First the tomboy. Need to work on the hair. Hate to see the seems on the pictures, seems as the epoxy filler wasn't enough...
>>96884710Nice skin tone anon, but why didn't you filled the gaps? Cannot goon on this one.
>>96884677think about it simple green is just a cleaner. if you were trying to clean your kitchen or whatever would you want a cleaner that would strip the paint off of things? the only reason it works at all is because people use child art project tier paints and most don't even bother to do proper surface prep.you're going to have to decide whether removing the primer is worth the risk of damaging the plastic with stronger solvents. if you're trying to get rid of it because it went on grainy you can try carefully sanding it smooth.
>>96884710if that isn't an android and you plan to paint it that good you should fill those gaps
>>96884007
>>96883712N-Nani!?
>>96884710The paintjob so far looks great, bug goddamn those gaps fuck it up. Unfortunately, you should bite the bullet and restart to fill in the gaps.
>>96884759At this point I'm probably gonna just go at it with a sanding stick to the best of my ability and then reprime it with my better primer. I may try IPA one more time and then try to go at it with the qtip again. I wish I had a tool that I could really go at it with a lot of force. Like a piece of firm sponge on a stick or something. That would make it easier.

Tried to do sponge chop. It was an absolute disaster, I think I made the sponge or the paint too wet and it just looked awful.I'm out of spray primer too and have chucked out all my old crappy Army Painter Warpaints whilst waiting on Speed Paints 2.0 so I mixed together some white with some brush on primer to make a super light grey and just slopped it over everything. It looks like I haven't lost too much detail so hopefully I can rescue these miniatures without having to buy stripper and more primer spray
I have to vent - I hate, HATE having to paint eyes. All those tinyass eye sockets that require me to pick up this magnifying glass on stand for electronics (because normal glasses are not enoug), having to find and maintain proper focus plane (with only slight variation meaning it's all blurred), using 1s or 0s because 2 is too big and being both ultra-precise and fast because 0s gets dry tip within seconds. Pure hate.
>>96885559To be honest, these guys looks like drowned in too much paint, with sponge you were supposed to leave only little paint at the time.
>>96885565Oh these are after I just re-primed them and they're still wet.Originally I painted them with the Warpaints but they were all chalky and looked terrible. I thought maybe I could just sponge on some white highlights and decorate them with speedpaints but I made a mess of them.I've just slathered them in the moisture of white and brush on primer so I can repaint with speedpaints. I think it's down to the initial srat primer that I didn't warm the can up. I'll save these models one way or another. I'm just trying to avoid stripping and re-priming them if I can as I've just dropped a chunk of cash of the Speed Paint set
>>96885563Keep practicing anon, you'll get the hang of it eventually. If I can share a tip - thin your paint more than you usually do, even more so than for edge highlights. It needs to be VERY runny. That way it shouldn't dry on the tip and apply with just the slightest touch.
>>96885588I tried that, result is paint running all over, behaving like wash would. Fuck me.
Okay, this face ended up so hilarious I couldn't help but take a photo before moving to fix it. Behold, special care samurai.
>>96885563Eyes are definitely tough. I use an optivisor and pic related are some of my faces. I usually use a size 1 to do the pupils. The key is a SHARP brush tip, which my issue is keeping a sharp tip on my brushes. I baby them as much as possible and still the bristles still dull/wear down. The tutorial at the bottom is what made painting eyes click for me. I've actually started enjoying painting faces instead of helms because it lets me personalize each model.
>>96885354>describe the thing you're doing and blame it on your opponent.
>>96885653Each of 0s and 1s I tried have actually "too sharp" tip - instead of releasing paint when touching, it only release when I move it a bit more forward, which cause them to bend and release too much paint and on the side instead. No idea how to get around this.
>>96885653How early in the process are you painting the eyes in? Are you doing heads as a sub assembly or just fixed to the model?
>>96885660>why are people mad at me when I start blathering about idpol cancer in nonpolitical threadLiterally double-digit IQ.
>>96885676Damn, that's actually nuts. If too much paint is flowing out maybe consider using a thicker consistency when doing that fine of work specifically?>>96885677Heads are usually just fixed on the model. What I've started doing is laying down the first half of the face's layers, doing the eyes, then finishing the highlighting on the face. My current face process is basecoat->highlight->shade->highlight. Including eyes it would be: basecoat->highlight->brown for eye socket->shade->white of eyes->pupil->highlight skin.
>>96885693>Projection : The Continuing
>>96885714trying too hard, just fuck off
>>96885676I see you've twisted your brush into a fine tip, a mistake I made myself for many years, this worsens curling but it also alters the way paint flows out of the tip.You want to get a fine tip on your brush without twisting the brush hairs.
>>96885707Tried that too, thicker paint does not release at all because tip dries too fast.
>>96885725see my last two comments.
>>96885729>You want to get a fine tip on your brush without twisting the brush hairs. How?

Newfag to painting. Which of these is more useful wide range wise as a base for a paint set?
>>96886327Neither, buy the specific paints you'll use instead.
>>96886327Where are you based? I'm in the UK and I've just bought the Most Wanted set which is on the right. It contains 24 paints inc the medium, I got it for £70 which is a little less expensive than RRP. The Mega Set contains double the paints and is double the price here. There is also a Wargamers Mega Set which contains 60 paints but is a bit rare. Then you go to up to the full set which is over £300.For me the Most Wanted is a good set but you might want to pick up some more greens and browns. The greens included are quite vibrant and the wood brown is a dark brown and the only true brown in the set. The Desolate Brown is more like a khaki. Definitely pick up Hardened Leather if you get the Most Wanted set. You can tone down the greens by mixing Desolate Brown into them. The set on the left of your image appears to be Speed Paint 1.0, I would avoid that as the formula is known to have reactivation issues where it bleeds when painted over
>>96886327I bought the right just getting started and I've used almost every single paint in the set for something. I'd recommend it for a beginner. >>96886419How incredibly unhelpful.
>>96886419If he's painting up something like Hero Quest or another board game then he might have good use for all the different paints. You can also buy the paint bundles for specific armies now too, whether they're Warhammer or historic armies.
>>96885563why not use a slower drying paint? or mix the one that's drying too fast with retarder? I would definitely second the recommendation for jeweler's spectacles.

Greetings, recently got into HeroQuest and I am trying to fill out all of the rosters for the expansions like the 4 enchanted armors in Kellars Keep. However, where would you guys suggest getting some good and fitting custom minis?? I already bought a bunch from Minis3D in Italy and they came out great - however I miss a bigger lineup of stuff, the only criteria is that they keep the size dimensions as close to the remade heroquest miniatures as possible.

>>96890378does youtube count?
>>96890388Apart from washes, AK is better. Then again, don't limit yourself to just one brand.
>>96890388>>96890394This. AK is better but limiting yourself to just one brand is foolish. To answer your question, the AP Warpaints Fanatic range is pretty good. Certain paints are very thick and need to be watered down quite a lot, and I have terrible experience running them through and airbrush no matter how much thinner and flow improver I use, but they're mostly fine. I'd rate them to be pretty equal to Citadel paints. Most of their range is fine, but the paint thickness and behavior is inconsistent and a certain few paints are kinda shit.
>>96890394>>96890424I'm just asking because I never used them and since they're going oop there is a decent discount on then, so I figured i might get myself a set ot two for cheap
>>96890424Beyond what you said (I have the same experience) my biggest issue with AP is how washed out so many colors are, and that the entire range basically can't into dark, vivid colors (apart from the Blanche set). That, and the usual AP retardation when it comes to oils/white spirit, but I already rambled about that in this general many times. >>96890432I wouldn't waste money with AP sets (apart from washes, if they are selling sets of washes, definitely grab those). Get individual paints you'll use.
>>96890393Well I eas hoping for old pdf's I remember seeing some old carboard diy terrain on some magazines but I can't find them
>>96890432old ap are dogshit, stay away from them even if they are free
>>96890441>That, and the usual AP retardation when it comes to oils/white spirit, but I already rambled about that in this general many times.Wait hold up. Recently I had an issue with using oils on a red killa kan that I had used AP SpeedPaints on. Slaughter Red iirc. The magenta shadow areas turned into a dirty orange brown after a dark red oil wash and I have no idea why. I was lazy and did not varnish the model before oil washing, but I've never had this sort of strange reaction between any other paints and oil washes. It wasn't only the recesses that turned brown either, it was entire panels, whatever areas where the AP paint hadn't been covered by other paints.
>>96890486Don't bring this up or you'll attract AP apologists
>>96890424>I have terrible experience running them through and airbrush no matter how much thinner and flow improver I useI have zero issues with the AP warpaints and my airbrush
>>96890486Yeah, that's the issue. AP paints have a weird, inconsistent reaction to oils (and white spirit). Most of the time, the paint just dissolves (even when dry), sometimes there's discoloration, etc. Picrel is a test that I did some time ago. Either don't use oils with AP, or varnish the fuck out of it beforehand. Which is still imo retarded, because AP costs about the same as other paints that have no such problem.
>>96890262Thanks! No diorama. I'm doing these for Firelock 198X, so they're going on a 40mm square base. I'm planning on putting the bases for the first 3 squads together over the next couple days. Red clay and grass, Georgia style.
Here’s a grey seer wip. I’m kind of winging it on the bell so I would appreciate any advice for that part and for the entire staff>>96890432>>96890388On the topic of AP, their strong and dark tones have always been good and I’ve owned them for some years. I got the Blanche set 1 and it was really fun to use. The colors are nice and it made me get creative, I got the 2nd Blanche set release and it introduces a lot of good reds.Vince Venturella says that the original AP fanatic line lacked good reds and the fiery vermillion that comes in the 2nd Blanche set is very needed. It’s a nice bright red. Pic rel uses a lot of the AP paints from the Blanche set.Banshee brown, the darkness, blanched berry, ironclad grey, and tainted green are some colors I find myself using a lot as base or mid tones to layer over. I really like Banshee brown, the darkness, and paratrooper tan especially. https://youtu.be/iadzL8JPfh8?si=wTSBTzZgWUO8d1U_

>>96890659Not official models, in this case. These are Team Yankee Soviet motor rifle guys. The people who use minis instead of standees usually use Soviets (uniforms match) or Canadians (guns match) for Feds - there's nothing bespoke that I'm aware of.I play it via TTS, so these minis are more of just a "broadening horizons" collection than practical game pieces I expect to use. I haven't done 15mm before, wanted to try it, and this was a good excuse. Figured $15ish for a tank, $25 for like 9 squads, and that's a good side project to knock out and then come back with more models when I feel like it.Cheers.
>>96890735Whoops, missed this. Most of them are on the little disc bases to slot into Flames of War/Team Yankee bases (the prone infantry are not), but they go on 40mm square bases for squads. I landed on 3/5 models for half/full squads. Just gotta get texture paste, some more paint, and flocking down and they'll be done. Then 3 more squads and a tank.I really do need to get back to my Warhammer stuff sooner rather than later, but this is a nice change of pace.

I'm thinking of getting an airbrush. What would I need to make sure that no particulate matter gets everywhere if I'm just spraying basic acrylic paints? I work in a carpeted hallway on an old desk, so I don't want to be building up any residue on the carpet or walls. I know about ventilated spray booths, but ideally I don't want to use one because of limited space.

>>96891717>>96891749I store some of my minis in picrel, these actually have 2 little magnets on top. Works nicely and you can fit quite a decent number of minis inside. I used my country's ebay equivalent but I'm sure this is chinkshit and can be found on ali or temu.
Hope this will solve at least some of the problems with painting eyes.
>>96891680you may notice a bit more dust overall, but nothing concerning and definetly not worse than regular dust, those particles aren't small enough to spread like the plagueif you are going to spray for hours every day you might need a real booth tho
>>96891680If you have high pressure (2-3 bar range) and/or spray at full blast, it can bounce back from cardboard but it still won't travel far. Paint particles you produce with airbrush are not small enough to perform Brownian motion in the air like some nanoparticles from chem labs (t. physicist) and will stay in the air for 10-15 min max before landing. What you should do is to keep door and/or window open (or just vent after work) and keep FFP3 mask/half mask to catch anything that could bounce back but people often use so called "covid masks" just fine too. But again, overspray is easy to avoid if you control the trigger (which you should anyway) and keep pressure at around 1.5 bar instead.Fun thing - I was curious what Chat GPT and Copilot would say about this subject and, as predicted, it produced peak fearmongering (including suggesting that paint particles would get back into air from slightest motion, pure bullshit) and, also as predicted, listed Reddit posts as source. Let that sink in, the little buddy.
>>96891941That's what 90% of AI responses are though, it just skims the top few articles that Google normally produces and summarizes it. Often times when you are GPT'ing something obscure you can scroll down and read through one of the top R*ddit results and find a post/comment saying almost exactly what GPT spat out, sometimes even word-for-word.

>>96890080Maybe get some reference photos of wet fabric over skin, but otherwise I'd suggest highlights of the gown colour along 'inner'/under' side of the thigh where the fabric would bundle, and a lighter skin-shade glaze/highlights/selective gloss varnish where the leg is pushing through the fabric most, then a thin glaze of the gown colour to cover it back up. Meat dragon progress. I havent worked on him in a few days. Today I plan to finish the reds. The red is going to fade into violet / purple on the wings and tail. What I can do it basically layer over the purple so the red isnt as severe. The red is basically the undertone to outline what shouldnt be blue. A lot of work ahead to clear this up after. I'm going to aim for end of November.

>>96892862dry spray is when the carrier solvent in a paint dries in the air before the paint gets to whatever you're painting. it's caused by spraying from too far away or in an environment that's too hot. it's bad mostly because it looks like shit and probably also isn't good for adhesion. going by the pictures posted itt it's extremely common. I think people are afraid of flooding the details on their models so they try to spray from too far away.

My eyes weren't having any of me painting the farseer's gem collection today, so I finished up c41-N instead. Then I gave him a quick spray of varnish... which appeared to be frosting up on me. >>96894630Blacklining is essentially painting dark lines in places where 2 colors or surfaces meet to add definition.
>>96894630If you're being literal, it would tracing a black line to define contours. Here, you can just be accurate with your wash and not going berserk and spilling it everywhere.>>96894688Fucking rad
>>96894385Overall it looks pretty good. You could do with deeper shadows over most of it to increase contrast, especially on the reds. Also paint the rivets on the armor silver to break up the red. You could also do with a brighter fine highlight on the red to make it stand out more and give more interest. The bloody axe looks a bit like it's just been lightly painted red, so maybe consider picking up a blood effect paint like Blood for the Blood God. The skin looks ok, but you could do with adding some more life colors. A slight reddish tint to give it some warmth. The black cloak could also use a highlight. Your base is rather basic, but I'm a pretty shit baser myself. Some variety in elevation might help.Keep in mind that these are just the things I can find to point out as places of improvement. It's by no means a poorly painted model.
>>96894688That freehand is rad and I'm sure you hold all the power autism gives. The only thing I could think of to improve it would be to make it dirty, at least at the bottom. Maybe some blood spatter.

Still working on him, practicing thinning paints and brush control....the goalpost is always moving, I would have been ecstatic with this years ago but now I see so many flaws and room for improvement...I want to learn display level painting, not tryina spend 300 hours on a mini or anything but there are just so many skills you dont learn if you dont slow down, and I spent so much time painting fast and loose....>>96897296He's neat>>96897173So teeny, good job>>96896813I love your freehand keep up the good work>>96896179I think they look good
>>96897352>I would have been ecstatic with this years ago but now I see so many flaws and room for improvementgood, that means you are getting better and actively doing so
>>96897350The aim is Georgia red clay soil, though I missed the mark on color a bit. Thanks for the recommendations.
>>96897365Yeah, might as well try...i've been feeling like I need to do hard things recentlyPlus i'm super inspired by the recent round of golden demon entries....i want to learn how to emulate itBasecoating for days
>>96897408>Plus i'm super inspired by the recent round of golden demon entries....i want to learn how to emulate itThat's great anon!Don't get put down by thinking "I can't do that". I guarantee those same painters went through the same struggle you are in right now. The only difference between them and you is time spent painting minis. This involves all the different techniques they've spent time on practicing and trying out.
>>96897405>Georgia red clay soilcant' say i know how that is but dry clay cracks, so try some sort of crackle paint or medium, that would look good in patches>>96897408>recent round of golden demon entriesany links?
Ok, quick mock idea for the next banner.
>>96897474Why not a dog instead of a goat? That's usually the more common couple.
>>96897484Because Black Philip is based.
>>96897438This is my fav, just google, there is a gallery article on warhammer community
>>96897474she should be with her back to the goat for...reasons

Unpopular opinion, but I think this GD was pretty weak and uninteresting.
I always forget how difficult it is to come up with gift ideas for you people when most of you already have a bunch of stuff and don't put anything specific in your wishlist message.
>>96897719I, on the other hand, am afraid of how much should I put in, as to both not overwhelmed my match and myself and to avoid disappointment.
>>96897719Hobby supplies are always a safe bet>nice brush>nice nippers>nice hobby knife>pack of milliput>bottle of tamiya extra thin>some tufts or other basing stuffetc. My match just put "marines" without even specifying a chapter and I have no clue what the fuck to get him. I'm thinking of getting one of the "universal" minis like a techmarine, painting that for him and maybe adding a dreadnought or something.
>>96897776>My match just put "marines"Send him several figures of the vtuber Houshou Marine
>>96897808now that's a good idea
>>96897582This year was incredible as far as the standard of entries goes. A lot of professional painters decided they wanted GD clout, significantly more than usual, making the competition some of the fiercest, maybe ever.
>>96897776>>96897719I do a once over of the online places I order from and order myself random stuff, and either order 2 or split it if that's possible
>>96897808Paint them blue firstUltramarines
>>96897582just more spaniardslop with overuse of highlighting and layering. Everything looks fake and plastic, surreal and not grimdark.
>>96896546>It's the same email as last year, and the years beforeI know, my mail program doesnt save that long though and I dont see any mail, even with decoding its just the closed form.I dont even want something myself, Im fine with just sending.
>>96897719
Still haven't received my secret santa emailWhat gives sampta?
>>96897924this is a trend in gd because that's what the judges looks for a lot of the time, remember 'the lizard'?the hh gold is quite good, it has a very natural light
>>96897924$100 this guy doesn't paint above basecoat-wash-highlight standard
>>96898178let me guess, you need more?
>>96896803Looks neat anon
>>96898178>not being able to do something disallows you to have an subjective opinion on itsurely all the judges can paint like that too, right?
>>96898092>remember 'the lizard'?I haven't been on WIP for a while so no I don't.
>>96898391slayer sword one year was just a skink
>>96898401a fucking beautifully painted skink though
New thread:>>96898412>>96898412>>96898412
>>96898391>>96898406technically perfect, absolutely boring
>>96898427>technical skill at this level is boringyeah whatever
>>96898453nta, but I kinda agree with anon. I very much respect the skill and dedication, but it's just so lifeless, it looks like from a not particularly good comic book. Imo, the base has more life and interest to it than the mini.
>The first 150 dollars of just-coomer-minis has arrived for my SS match today
>>96895141Are these still wip or are you finished? I quite like them as they are, like stealth armor.
