For me, it's making sure that everyone involved understands that hexcrawling isn't an overland movement game but an overland exploration game. I think a lot of hexcrawl rulesets are overly focused on just getting you somewhere, adding a bunch of hunting and fishing checks and throwing a bunch of encounters at you along the way, which to me is like a ruleset that encourages you to walk the longest distance down dungeon corridors possible rather than getting into rooms and getting shit done.

They're mid-high level enemies for sure, but at that level the players should have ways of dealing with them despite the resistances and shit. If you look at it from a pure game-design point of view you could say that "demons and devils" are the narrative excuse for a certain package of challenging abilities that are hard to explain in any natural creature.

Anyway, the lower orders of demons can be hit by normal weapons, and by the time you start fighting Type IVs you should be long past any fighter-type having to make do with normal ones. The thing to remember to my mind is that they can only use one of their wack at-will abilities at a time, and many of them are highly situational; it's improbable that you'll need to keep a Type IV's detect magic or read languages abilities in mind during combat. IMO the main issue is their ability to Teleport Without Error, which means the PCs need some way to lock it down if they want to reliably kill a demon – that or just do massive damage before the demon can use it.

Sure, but it's not even a necessary assumption for the village to be further than 24 miles from the city to make a profit from trading, it's just a quick way to increase it. Let's instead calculate the profits from a village that's exactly 24 miles away: Travel time is 4 days, supply cost is about 9,14 GP. City and village are 2 points closer in demand, meaning we sell only at 4 steps in our favor, so gross income is reduced to 25.6 GP. Everything else stays constant, so our expected profit is about 2.54 GP for the 28 day trip. That's only enough for a wretched life style, so you might want to improve that by negotiating for better prices. Fortunately, I was curious about what we stand to gain by doing this, so I quickly calculated it as well. In short, it will increase our expected profits to 6.12 GP in this case.
This assumes that our travelling trader is a typical merchant, so that any modifiers to the negotiation roll cancel each other out, and that we try to get better prices both when purchasing and selling. It also carries an approximate 10% risk to offend one of the other parties and we won't get to sell any grain that month.

Do you use a screen at the table? If so, which one? I'm fortunate enough to have three AD&D screens to select from, though I don't use it when running a game online. So we like 1e here? Yeah me too, but what's the general consensus here about 1e Gygax's psionics?
I think 1e psionics is an interesting system but not very well explained.
Ok I'll admit i've been autistically obsessing over it lately.
Like, it's a cool system, but the 1e DMG doesn't really explain when to use it in the middle of combat, it just says that there's 10 mental exchanges per melee round. Most people assume that means at the begging of each turn here's 10 constitutive mental duels but that just doesn't work because that means anyone with low psionic strength will instantly die to any psionic monster, like a mindflyer.
Yeah the mindflayer was an instrinsec psionic monster, and it's a shame nobody used psionics because that means nobody really saw the mindflayer as it truly was designed.
Also I heard that after Gygax moved from TSR he did another RPG with another psionics system, does anyne know anything about that???

Genuinely, would there be a way to build an ACKS-like game that was less complicated? I don't like all the freakshit classes, especially since so many are geared toward Macris' setting. I don't really love proficiencies. I just want a B/X game with good trade rules and domain rules. It'd be cool if there were foraging tables to get special ingredients for potions or magic items, too. Not just "you need 40 troll skulls to make a +1 sword" okay but by the time you kill 40 trolls you're probably so high level you don't really need a +1 sword anymore.

The core 4 are just the D&D core 4 (Fighter, MU, Thief, Cleric) with the latter renamed. The Vaultguard is the OD&D Dwarf, the Spellsword is the OD&D Elf. The other Dwarf and Elf classes are just there to illustrate how the expanded race-as-class stuff works. Other classes are there for specific mechanics (Venturer, Explorer) or as versions of existing old classes (Witch, Barbarian).

So all I can think of that's specific to the Autarch setting are the Zaharan Ruinguard and the Nobiran Wonderworker, which you could very easily just cut with no trouble at all.

Magic item requirements are listed in gp value so all you really have to do is say "fuck the spell limitations for components, any competent alchemist can boil them down" and you're sorted.

A quick note - the whole thing with spell components is that their gold value is equal to the monster's xp value, reinforcing gold-as-XP. You don't have to follow that if you don't want to.

You know your setting better than I do. Is it relatively safe and merchants don't make a whole lot, but live consistently and comfortably? ignore all the dumb details and just have each trip produce a predicted random range of profit, maybe modified with some ability rolls, and maybe throw in a table that includes things like "Minor Baron has spiked toll prices: --5% profit" or "Hippogriff assualts one of the wagon's horses: Lose a half day, Gain a hippogriff foal in 11 months".
Let players worry about cool stuff, and not analyzing traderoutes and good prices all just to figure out how to make an extra 10 gold.
If it's more dangerous, make the complications table more dangerous and up the potential profits and losses. Hell, make different regions have different "safe" or "dangerous" routes, and let your players decide where they're gonna gamble.
You should be able to have fun making these rules, because if they're not fun to make, they're probably not gonna be fun to use or play with.

In any case this is all done by the GM so I doubt any player group will get "bored".

So for example there's a shitload of stuff in ACKS II about skinning animals and monsters, taking trophies etc etc which players might want to do, might not want to do.
