Does a stage 3 zombie have two or ten times as much RE as a stage 2 to steal? When you go up in stage, is it mainly a factor of gaining more RE, or is it more a matter of efficient use of that RE? If energy gain is only double per stage, and improved efficiency is the main gain per level, it could be only in the low thousands of stage 2 zombies to match a stage 10 in value. That's just one variable that we don't have. There are plenty of others, such as it could be entirely possible for the method to be more efficient at gaining power from those that are weaker than you. Depending on what the actual values are the method could be anywhere from overpowered to absolutely useless.

Most novels seem to have it so one step removed can hold their own for a short time but it's mostly impossible unless you've got a protagonist tier cheat making you punch above your cultivation level (which exists in Rake's CYOA, to give him credit). It's extremely common in those novels for Chinkgooks to go "Heh, I'm at the peak of stage 7 of the Heavenly Nascent Soul Realm while you are merely the peak of Stage 6. You cannot defeat me, it's impossible!" and then they get face slapped, etc, etc. Implying massive differences in power.Respectfully, your premise is wrong here because we actually do have a standard to go by. There isn't really a number I can give but the amount of energy is implied to be massive between each stage in the genre itself so I'm assuming Rake would keep that consistent. So it makes absolutely no sense for a RE-04 stage cultivator to be getting much at all from RE-01 zombies and skeletons. We also don't know how many enemies on your level you have to kill, or how much you can get out of people on different levels. If you can go up in stage by killing 10 guys on your stage, and the stage below you has only a tenth the energy, it would seem like you need to kill 100 of them to go up in stage, but that changes if you are only actually able to absorb half the power of someone on your stage, but can absorb all the power from someone one stage below you.We don't have those numbers, we have vague suggests of how much each stage can do with the power they have. Not how much power they have, what they can do with it.

Assuming two characters fire a qi blast or something and they use the exact same amount of energy it will cancel out 99% of the time in the material. It'll only start mattering when unique body physiques or cultivation methods are clashing for example an S tier cultivation method's qi is more refined thus will generally outperform against someone who is using an A tier cultivation method. Same applies for body physiques. If character A has the Phoenix Flame Physique and it's some divine grade thing, but character B has a generic Iron Fist Physique, they're going to lose in most equivalent clashes. But assuming equal cultivation methods they will basically always cancel out. To Rake's credit here again he actually accounts for this in the cultivation methods themselves. Some cultivation methods are inherently "stronger" than others. This is extremely common. The more refined your qi is the more it is worth. That's again why your cultivation technique is so vital and important. Quality also determines quantity. Literally. There's no need to dive into the hard numbers. In general the difference between stages is massive. If you are devouring the energy from enemies 2 or less stages below you (RE-04 stealing RE-01 and RE-02) you will in general get a drop in an ocean or a bucket. Killing RE-03 targets will be a much closer match but even then you'll need at least a dozen going by common scaling we see.
