To explain my "drop in an ocean" analogy a little more, I'm saying that you need to fill a bucket or ocean to advance to the next stage. A stage 4 stealing the qi and refinement from a stage 2 would be like taking a drop and trying to fill a tank or even ocean with it depending on the level of cultivation (peak vs early stage). It's barely anything, and a stage 4 taking from stage 1 might even be like a drop trying to fill up an entire ocean. Stage 3 might be like trying to fill a bucket and you might get a drop, cup, or bowl's worth (depending on cultivation level). The biggest gains would be stealing from an equivalent opponent.

The Level of your cultivation within the stage itself is also extremely important. For example, you can just barely be at the Early-Stages of Stage 4 but if your opponent is Peak Stage 3, you're actually not too far apart (although the Entry-level Stage 4 still has a massive advantage, the Peak Stage 3 still has a chance). Is the early Stage 4 steals their energy in one they would probably bump to one step away from the Middle-Stage tier (if not Middle Stage altogether, depending on the refinement of their Qi, which again makes this all very relative). Let's assume he bumps to Middle Stage in one go because he steals the refinement of a favored son of heaven with a high refinement for his stage. He still needs to move from Middle to hit the Late Stage and then get to the Peak Stage of cultivation within Stage 4 (RE-04 in this CYOA). I'm assuming that Rake is fine with this sort of scaling because this is literally the genre in a nutshell.

Just to restate my position in simple terms, Vermillion is underpowered compared to other methods assuming you choose equal options. It lags behind when you look more closely at how everything works. Also, I apologize for my wording and phrasing because I'm actually pretty tired from work. This is why I said earlier I didn't want to make a big post, but here we are anyway, apparently.

This is why they were said to explicitly all be equal. Just assume the unexplained parts play out in such a way that it's equivalent to the rest, you can avoid the autistic powerscaling and just focus on the fun parts of it.
>>
>>97116072
I guess if it says they are all equal is fine then. I wonder why all authors waste time balancing choices when they can just put at the start of the cyoa

I knew that would bring some of you out of the woodwork. I think CYOAs are kind of analogous to dreams - they reflect something about yourself and (sometimes in nonsensical ways) teach or prepare you for something. The best ones lean into that, in my view. If you want your dreams to be a pure power fantasy, utterly under your controi, I would suggest that implies something about your waking life

>Just assume the unexplained parts play out in such a way that it's equivalent to the rest
>All choices are equal
This WOG approach is what Rake tried to do and it doesn't work. "They're equal because I said so" isn't how reality works. Methods have requirements and conditions for cultivating. Saying they're equal doesn't make it true. You aren't accounting the actual mechanics of how Vermillion itself functions. You require technology to integrate with Machine just like how Vermillion requires SUITABLE victims. Either Vermillion is the worst or strongest method as currently written. You only have two choices here.
>A: Vermillion scales strictly with the opponent's actual cultivation (which is what Rake said in the CYOA thread), which makes it balanced but lag behind other methods in practical use due to not being able to consistently find appropriate targets to steal cultivation from. Yes, I am factoring in Hunting Grounds which cannot be used for long, and I'm also taking into account occasional mutants of a higher RE level. It's still the worst, slowest, riskiest, and most inconsistent method.
>B: "It just works/they're equal because I said so" route = Vermillion gives arbitrary gains regardless of refinement or practical level of the target (not accounting for actual refinement differentials which goes against the lore of cultivation like in pic related), which immediately makes it the strongest method because it allows effortless power leveling due to overlooking the actual mechanics. The RE-04 can safely farm RE-02 and RE-03's without being challenged and effortlessly bump up to RE-05. It now becomes the strongest and most unbalanced method and it would be incredibly retarded to do this.

My arguments are assuming the more logical scenario of A because A is what most cultivation series will go off of and even Rake said this. The WOG handwaving doesn't work. If you say it does in practice it's busted, or it's bad if you play it straight.

As a last question have we any idea about what's going on with the archdevil? Is she giving Diabolism?
>>
>>97117397
Neither.
I prefer using different terms for different types of powers. Esper is the perception-focused, as the name would imply.
Telepath revolves around mind-influencing powers, be it actual telepathy, mind control, mind-breaking, or pain projection.
Kinetic is all about %whatever%-kinesis, making or manipulating specific type of matter, with bio-kinetics standing in for healer types.
Something more esoteric would have it's own name too.
>Literal, Mind > Matter and making things happen.
Reality warper? Mage? Anomaly? Aberrant?
>>
>>97117397
>Which sounds cooler? Esper or Psychic
I'm not sure about either. Psychic comes.with a lot of charlatan baggage, while esper (ESPer) is somewhat obscure.

What's the flavor/premise of the cyoa?
>>
>>97117552
It's an alternate version of Dido after completing her version of the 'become the first sinner' mission to become the archdevil.

>>
>>97117552
>As a last question have we any idea about what's going on with the archdevil? Is she giving Diabolism?
Based on Tankista's posts, the Archdevil is a version of Dido. The original Dido duplicated herself, with one of them becoming the Archdevil and the other infiltrating the Convention as a Sheol refugee.

The plan was that Archdevil-Dido was going to go back in time, become the demon Prometheus, and start seeding knowledge of Diabolism long before Sargon figures out how to use ether. So that Diabolism, not Conventional sorcery, becomes the go-to solution.

In other words, Dido didn't just want to beat the Convention. She wants to totally rewrite history.

However, for unknown reasons, Archdevil-Dido isn't following the plan. She's hanging around the ruins of China and Southeast Asia, granting wishes instead. And with Infiltrator-Dido in deep cover with the Convention, there's no one who can explain what Archdevil-Dido thinks she's doing. Hence the mission in Blood Magic to investigate.

Making a sci-fi cyoa, need various unique homeworlds like a distant planet that devolved back to ancient history.

Steal from classic sci-fi. Like vernor vinge had a planet around the on/off star. A star that acts normally for 40 years, then spends a hundred years with drastically decreased output.
All life goes deep into the earth in hibernation, the entire world freezes up to and including snowing CO2. Then everything waits to wake up again to produce the next generation. All life is designed to hibernate as a result.
>>
>>97117901
* Screaming planet: a planet where gasses escaping natural vents in the rocks sound like constant screaming of a choir of agonized souls. It's a bit like hell, but not a fiery kind of hell
* Short planet: a planet where the shortest people have highest status. Actual midgets rule it
* Gold planet: a planet where gold is very common and everything is made of it
* Bright planet: a planet that's extremely bright 24/7, the light comes from the surface of the planet rather than from the suns. If you go outside without a heavily dimmed visor, you are blinded. But it's breathable and highly habitable otherwise, people don't need suits, they only need visors when outside.
* Wizard tower planet: a planet where everyone is like a wizard and lives in tall wizard towers

I like this idea, a planet populated by a cadre of 100 wizards and warlocks who divide the planet between all of them and control thousands of magically enslaved thralls to populate their cities. Like Solaria https://asimov.fandom.com/wiki/Solaria
>>
>>97117901
The porch planet. It looks like a monotonous suberbian planet where there are houses where people live and absolutely nothing else, but there aren't even houses. If you go through any door, you just find another porch on the other side.
>>
>>97117904
There's a nice symbolic unity in describing a planet like you'd describe a small island, like in Odysseia or the Tempest, it's a classic take for a reason. This can be made more believable by literally making the only landmass on the planet a small island, I wonder why that isn't done more often.
>>
>>97118047
>it's a classic take for a reason
yeah, and that reason is the full scope of even a single plaent is too large for the typical story's size, the only way to use even a small fraction of a planet without making the additions of more planets seem ridiculous is to spend at least the equivalent of several movies or novels making stories about different locations on it

>I wonder why that isn't done more often.
because they want to preserve the idea that it's a whole planet, not shatter it, the problem is that completely unexplored regions aren't really suitable for that either, especially if there's multiple authors

>there are enough low-level victims that farming them enough gives you still a good amount of RE, enough to be competitive
>LOW-LEVEL VICTIMS
AHAHAHAHAHA I can't keep being nice when you're so fucking retarded! Clearly you have zero fucking familiarity with the cultivation genre. Even amongst ability stealing novels the protagonist cannot just steal power from fodder to remain competitive yet here you are. You think LOW-LEVEL anything is sufficient to breakthrough the world between worlds that exists between the cultivation stages? You think a cup of water compares to an ocean? WOGfags are anti-reality and zero intelligence. Blind assertions in the face of reason is still the argument. You clearly aren't paying attention to a single fucking word. I guess every other method can use LOW-LEVEL cultivation to ascend to higher stages as well, that totally fits with wuxia >because I said so.

Let's actually be consistent with your retardation and apply this same LOW-LEVEL argument to every other method. Machinefags can just take calculators and grind to higher stages since you say LOW-LEVEL refinement is acceptable. Starting to see the problem, you fucking idiot? Mass slaughtering skeletons as a Vermillion is sufficient since they are LOW-LEVEL VICTIMS. IT'LL ALL WORK OUT SOMEHOW, YOU'LL DEFINITELY STILL BE VIABLE AND COMPETITIVE BECAUSE YOU JUST WILL OK? Got Thousand Venom Texts? Just keep inoculating yourself with common snake and spider venom. Skin-Shedding Scripture? I've got a really bad scab so I can just keep picking at it until I hit immortality. Imagine the thick-headed asinine low-brow pissfaced black-out-drunk state you'd have to be in to type something so dumb. Genuinely kill yourself because you clearly don't know the setting or how to read because I explained this shit very thoroughly already and there's no excuse for your idiocy.

Vandread is pretty good, but it wasn't exactly that their tech is super compatible, though it is due to not changing that much after separating, it's that nigh magical crystal core of the ship that did that. It's been a while since I watched it, but I'm pretty sure that core was part of the colony ship that was meant to go the farthest from earth, and was thus one of the most advanced pieces of tech humanity had created.

Correct. There is no in between despite how much these idiots want to keep asserting that it's balanced "because it just is OK." That's their argument.

>>
>>97118814
I have a weird tangent. I don't think you could actually find that many stage 1 'enemies'. The description of the stages suggests that anything notably supernatural, like zombies which seem to be the most common potential enemy, would have to be fundamentally stage 2. Though there could be a bunch of 'feral' humans, or enraged animals at stage 1, I think zombies at a minimum should be stage 2 but potentially weaker than similar stage humans due to having flawed bodies. Zombies that are nearing the peak of stage 2 probably have most of those flaws corrected and should be closer to a human relying on instinctual cultivation. As far as aggressive stage 1 animals, increased aggression in wild animals has a pretty poor effect on their survival as they take stupid risks, limiting their numbers. There would likely be a large number of stage 1 human survivors, but you would be going out of your way to make them into enemies.
>>

>Keep fighting the good fight anon

Specific creature and unit types are better if you're doing monsters or multiple races. If you're just having a massive army or something then generic can work for a shorter cyoa and saves you a lot of time. Depends on length and tone too. In general I'd say going specific is better but if your cyoa is two or three pages go with generic broad strokes I guess

>What's the flavor/premise of the cyoa?
Action-Adventure Science Fiction.

The CYOA world diverges from our real world starting in the 1960s. The main gist is that Psychics / Espers have emerged with the ability to assert their wills on reality thanks to an assortment of unique / generic powers. Your brain has a unique power tailored for you subconciously based on your environmental upbringing, mental development, perception of reality, and your innate desire.

The CYOA picks up a century (or two) after the emergence of Psychics / Espers in a rebuilt world where they have claimed immense influence as organized criminals, government officials, public celeberities, duelists, etc. Beside them other strange phenomenon influence the worlds thanks to them messing with reality.

Currently, I have the beginning of the adventure as you aiming to become the Rank No. 1 among Psychics / Esper. Getting active in the streets, beating every Psychic / Esper you see, and allying with other Espers / Psychics from the underworld to public sphere as you make a long dash to the top.

Alternatively: I could go with everything takes place in the same school or city. But I don't think anyone would want that.

I won't argue that. We're all in the shadows of giants. They're all short and have a relatively simple formula, which I want to change for my next release. Much of my work is driven by a general craving for OC, which I've largely subverted by making my own OC. I haven't ever made a build for my own work, though. It feels strange to do.

>>97120613
My only serious complaints are that there are too few Basic units, the funny pic of the bomber goblin for Sapper was replaced by a generic shieldwall of dwarves rather than a mining dwarf, the Fallen Angels can't use basic units and its mechanics are somewhat bland, the Giants don't cost more to make than weaker races, and the Dark Fae aren't included under the Bureaucracy trait.

I always felt like this complaint was a little unwarranted. It doesn't explicitly say they are more costly but the strain on resources would be immense. After all equipping a Giant marksmen with giant sized equipment, who needs to reload giant ammo and who easts giant meals would be expensive to say the least. They are obviously good, but I don't think they are cyoa breaking like some suggest.

It has nothing to do with that anon or my quality of work, though I do think it's been decent so far. It's that about a year and a half ago I promised to release the armybuilder WIP I've got, but haven't yet. I still haven't fulfilled my promise to the thread. Until then I won't be an author by my own reckoning. It wouldn't take too much to finish, a month's work I would reason, but is already larger than African Warlord and follows a similar framework, albeit fantasy, so it would probably explode for some specific anons. I want to time that explosion so it doesn't get overlap with EA's release of Exalted Conquest and get less than half the builds and discussion it could have. Regardless I'll be finishing it during 2026 so I've got it off of my back.

Build reposti. According to the lore document you can specify not just words, but entire (single) concepts with Societal Traits. So, my plan is to first go for a world which contain magic capable of instantly giving the caster entire degrees worth of knowledge, bypassing the need for studying. Then I'll learn that magic, form a bond with the world and just use that to complete the requirements. If it doesn't my build is geared towards living in the most comfortable world possible while I study. I'll also take my two immediate family members with me, and see if I can't get Alec to induct them into the organisation proper. Also also, I'll try to convince Riley to instead of gunning for immortality, focus on magic that'll make her life easier in the 'shithole'.

Secret boxes never really work for long cyoas, do they?
Unless the secretboxness of it is treated very lightly, as a mere artistic flourish (like YMRD's box in OR).

What do your guys think of event like choices that give points or exclusive things as a reward with then multiple possible conclusions?
For example these:

>Go dragon hunting
Then it has 2 outcomes you choose from in this case:
>You are successful
You gain lots of points
>You failed but befriended a dragon
You gain less points but also get an exclusive dragon follower.

or

>Find the legendary hermit living in the mountains
And then the conclussions
>You asked him to train you.
Gain points.
>You asked him for his support.
Gain resourcess.

That's the fun part. No peers means no one can tell you no.

Dislike because I dislike events in general.
Also with that formulation, you're really pushing the player to ignore everything except what currency etc he gets out of it.
>>
>>97121056
I might, if I can find the space for them. The OC I'm working on will have a lot of companions though, and a few with waifu potential are guaranteed. If you can protect them and survive your journey, that is.

I remember it. Don't have it handy to repost, but it made an impression.

>>
>>97121829
That's kind of the objective to let you decide how many points you get of each kind in a fun way instead of just giving you an amount and letting you distribute them at will.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of After the Merge by NinjaGinja? I thought not. It’s not a story the anon would tell you, because nobody posts the cyoa these days, and I'm not sure anyone ever posted a complete build for it.
It's an amazing cyoa in many respects, but its almost unplayable due to its event design, which sounds a lot like what you're going for. Pretty sure "You gain less points but also get an exclusive dragon follower" was literally one optional outcome in an event in it. You should really take a look if you haven't, to see what not to do.
>>
>>97121903
>Is there another option?
Explain the situation and mention rewards that could be gained or/and suggested approach instead of giving either option A or B. maybe the reader will have a completely different approach.
i think the mission section in Wasteland Scion handles this appropriately, but that is not the only cyoa that does that

I didn't mean it like that but I guess I did make the Open Wonder events all girls, the other side has a couple waifus too, arguably more if you count each member of the Society as a potential waifu. I don't write waifus, but I did expect people to treat them as such so I left it vague.
>I remember you commenting me it was meant to be picking only from right or left depending on the world choice
Yea, I changed it by this version. Now they are not limited, but they do still make more sense in the respective world compared to the other.

You're misunderstanding what I'm saying. Almost anything can be a life lesson. I'm not saying CYOAs should stick to some kind of therapeutic realism at all, but I do think that those that unthinkingly indulge fantasies with hardly any limits or complex choices are typically less interesting and less good for their audience. They still have a right to exist, obviously
