How would you guys go about painting a wild turkey? I have one on my gnome blood bowl team, tried to do it in like a dark brown with a couple different dry brush colors, but wasn't really happy with how it turned out. Luckily I dropped and broke it so that gives me a chance to try again at least.

I'm looking for a nice darker skintone that isn't coal black for the beastmen wild herd added in the arcane journal for my goat lads. This looks close to what in my head a more goat than man leaning beastman looks skintone wise. But any idea what it is? some base blending rhinox hide and bugmans glow with layers adding more bugmans and then some cadian fleshtone maybe? I'm more an armor guy and skin is my big weakpoint in painting.

I wish lead free pewter was the norm. With white metal (and brass) you essentially have to assume there's a slight component of lead in there unless they say it isn't.

I don't see Empire minis from WFB/TOW posted here very often, so I'll contribute by sharing my current WIP.

I was a little disappointed with how my greatswords came out with only two colours for the main uniform, so for my halberdiers I decided to go for three (with blue being the 'secondary' colour for this scheme). I think a ratio vaguely like this will work out, though since I'm going by a miniature to miniature basis I'll put some more effort into making every uniform as distinct as possible in the exact ratio and distribution. It also contrasts nicely with my greatswords' striking blue uniforms.

(proxied miniatures from Warlord's. I hate GW's state troops with a passion)

anon here that got gotted by the white primer spray from yesterday

instead of stripping them, could I just do another pass or two over them with white to get rid of at least the top half of spottiness?
>>
>>97135399
I mean it's primer, isn't it? If there's no texture, just start painting over it now. Primer is just there for you to bond your paint to. If there is a fuzzy texture though, then you're gonna need to strip them.
>>
>>97135495

they are a bit rough/sandy I guess yeah... I found a knee on one model that is mostly just black primer and it does feel smoother

when doing my own research on r*ddit someone linked this video https://youtu.be/LEbAeb7Eiko?t=457 comparing white vs grey... some ingredient in white primer that makes it splotch up

but anyways the dots definitely appear to come through on some colors and overall is more matte and holds less detail

Winter is coming.

I've been using Mr. Surfacer Primer and Top Coat rattle cans on my balcony at night after work. But with Winter, should I just hold off until Spring? Chance it during sunny weekend days?

It might not matter much with Mr. Surfacer primer, I've noticed it's not as smooth, but after a few paint brush strokes it's fine. I'm worried about fucking up the top coats, though.

consider what dry spray means for that. when you have your primer properly applied it's bonded to the plastic and gives the paint a good surface to bond to iself. when your primer is dry sprayed it's just sitting on the surface like dingleberries on an ass, so the paint you put on top of it will have the same sandy texture and also have poor adhesion to the base plastic.

For parchment, I use Reaper's Pure White or Vallejo Ivory and go over it with Skeleton Horde Contrast Paint. For something about the colour of what the Inquisitor is wearing, I image starting with something less white as an undercoat could do the trick. Unfortuneatly, Citadel's whites have never worked out for me and their off-whites - except maybe Wraithbone - have been almost as bad.

>But are they really worse than stuff from non-chink brands?
Depends. The thing with airbrushes is that you have a few (like five) non-chink manufacturers, companies that have been making airbrushes for a long, long time. Badger is like 50 years old at this point, Iwata has been around for 100 years, H&S is a few years older (there are airbrushes made by them during the Third Reich, that are still spraying). And then you have an absolute flood of chink companies that either make cheap copies of these or copy from each other.
Gaahleri, as a company, is one of these largely no-name brands that mostly copies other chink companies. The difference with Gaahleri is that their marketing is not retards, and they tend to absolutely spam the fuck out of their airbrushes to every single even remotely noteworthy YouTuber every single time they manufacture a new model. This results in unnaturally inflated reviews, and as a result, Reddit adopts it as "truth" because they are braindead retards.

Are they worse than non-chink brands? Yes. Is it a huge difference? Depends on the model. If you take a gold standard higher mid-range airbrush like HS Evolution or Iwata Eclipse, the difference is fairly major. But models below these, it becomes mostly a question about what part of the usability/experience you want to compromise on. Finally, it depends on your use case. Do you want to prime, maybe do some very rudimentary pre/post shading and you are not planning on using it often? Get Fengda (BD-180, for example), or Gaahleri, or something like Master G223; it largely doesn't matter. Some are slightly better than others, but it will always be a compromise. Do you want to do all the cool shit airbrush allows you to do, do it often, AND want to have a good time? Start with Eclipse or Evolution.

Question for everyone but especially canadians, what do you use for matt varnish? I do not have a local shop to get shit from and the only two choices I seem to be able to find is army painter matt spray or rustoleum flat clear on amazon. I would buy the army painter but it is majorly over priced on amazon.ca at $35 a can when all the other are around 24. The rustoleum doesn't seem to have an ingredient list which I would like to stay with acrylic and I am assuming the rustoleum is not acrylic but the prices is right at 14$ a can. The rest are unknown name craft shit. Would kind of like a brush on though so I can do it in the house for now. Any recommendations?

>The struggle is real
Yeah but think of the 15 seconds of satisfaction you'll feel when you get it all done and look at your nice horde blob.
>>
>>97136663
I can't speak direclty about Gaahleri models, but can recommend another brand. I have a couple of Iwata airbrushes and a cheap Chinese copy. There is no comparison - the Iwata ones are in a completely different league. Better and smoother coverage, better control, they never leak, and they never jam.

Iwata Neo is entry-level and around $85, Iwata Eclipse is better and about $170. If you're planning on using an airbrush extensively and/or over a long period, I'd get the Eclipse.
>>
>>97137603
>Do you want to do all the cool shit airbrush allows you to do, do it often, AND want to have a good time? Start with Eclipse or Evolution.

If I had such expensive stuff as H&S airbrush, I would be afraid to even use them. Much like I wouldn't even dare to use DaVinci natural hair brushes due to their price and instead use Kolibri or Lineo... which is actually what I do. And I honestly doubt that you cannot do all that techniques with good quality Chinese airbrush just because they are Chinese.
>>
>>97137623
Not Canadian, and I tend to use satin varnishes since they don't dull down colors to the same extent, but I can recommend the Vallejo paint-on varnish line, and the Citadel sprays (Munitorum).
>>
>>97137662
>I would be afraid to even use them.
That's because you are used to chink garbage. One of the cool things about actual well-made airbrush is that it is very, very durable, both inside and out. Damaging, let alone breaking it, is very difficult. High tier airbrushes can easily last you a lifetime with a proper maintenance. With a bit of love (and o-ring replacements here and there) your grand-kids can use the same airbrush.
>with good quality
>Chinese airbrush
Pick one. And if there's such thing, it will cost similarly to HS.

Not my best stuff, but I finished up my buddies' party of characters over the weekend - photos attached. They're a bit overpainted, and I did hijack a WH40K motif for the banner and shields, but they'll do for now. Still so much to learn!
>>
>>97137680
Except I won't have grandchildren, let alone kids and my nephews will simply throw everything I own into trash once I die. But that's digression.

Yes, my experience is entirely based on Chinese airbrushes (in theory assembled in my country but the parts are made in China) but I was using the very cheapest one and slightly more expensive but also newer one and difference was huge. I have a feeling that Chinese stuff have simply bad reputation and they went over it in quality, much like Chinese scale models (many models few years apart have drastically different quality).
>>
>>97137708
>but I was using the very cheapest one and slightly more expensive but also newer one and difference was huge
Yet there's no possibility of similarly huge difference between chink airbrushes and actual well-made ones from Europe, US, or Japan?
>>
>>97137722
NTA, but what is the difference? what can you do with a well made airbrush you can't do with a cheap chinese one? The cheap one I'm using has worked well so far for priming and doing some base coats for my Armigers.
>>
>>97137735
>color modulation like pre/post shading
>actual shading/making smooth gradients even with very tiny minis
>hairline fine painting
>effects like OSL, again, even on very tiny models
>weathering
>the whole myriad of actual classic painting techniques related to airbrush
And it's not just what it can do, it's also how well it does it, and how fast and easy the maintenance, cleaning, and similar tasks are. How durable it is, so that you can do all these without risk of fucking something up. And about how well it is made, so that if you start using it often, you won't get fucked over by leaks, material failures, etc. that were not of your own making.
Like I said, if you wanna use it as a glorified rattlecan (like you are), there's no reason to buy good, expensive airbrush.

Learned elders of /WIP/, has any of you converted scale model kits for wargaming purposes? I've looked at some 1/48 scale vehicles, like the btr-60 and pic related for sci-fi wargaming. If you've made similar conversions in the past, how did you make these kits look more futuristic?
>>
>>97132275
You can soak them in garbage then, and get actual brushes
>>
>>97141793
They are too small next to GW sized models. And being interested in scale models, I could never unsee the actual tank behind the conversion, so I stopped. 3d printing offers better sci-fi tanks anyway
>>
>>97141852

Fair enough. I think the proportions would look a bit wonky, as real tanks tend to be narrower and longer than 40k boxes. But I thought 1/48 and 1/56 would be the closest to the 28mm scale.
3d printing is fine for walkers, but I'd rather have my tanks in hard plastic.
>>
>>97141893
It's not just the overall size, a gw tank track is 3-4mm thick, a model tank of the same size is maybe half that, same goes for rivets and every other detail, everything GW is chunky (and very much nonsensical) because they don't have a real proportions, sense of scale or purpose

with enough conversion work you could make it work for imperial guard tanks but at that point might as well go the paper route like papercraft anon

1:35 is better for warhammer, imo. It's a bit bigger (Warhammer scale is all over the place, but it's generally roughly 1:44), but since Warhammer is also heroic, I've found it fits better together. I've been trying both 1:48 ERA bricks and 1:35 ERA bricks and 1:35 is near perfect match.

green stuff is not structural nor a glue, it offers little reinforcement as a gap filler, less so on metal, milliput maybe, actual epoxy glue (for metals) would be the way to go

however, that looks easy enough to pin with a 1mm wire or paperclip

I used to work with status tokens, but the board tends to fill up quickly and sometimes it's not clear what belongs to what. So I figured putting a piece of paper with whatever information I want to add underneath the mini.
>>
>>97142144

Ha, there's even an eisenkern trooper posing next to the t-55. Though that tank was designed for manlets based on seeing it up close. 1/35 scale seems to offer a wide variety of post-war APCs and IFVs, which might look more appropriate for what I'm looking for. Thanks in any case.

I made white acrylic arrows that I can write whatever's affecting the mini at the time on and put them pointing to the model's base. Saves me lots of time looking for that one uncommon effect.

There was a famous conversion in White Dwarf decades ago of a WWI-era British Mk IV tank made into a Deathwing Land Raider after GW discontinued the original Land Raider kit. Granted, back then, Terminators were on 25mm bases...

They don't really seem to have any fantastic elements, besides the shields which weren't commonly used by such heavily armoured cavaliers. And the lack of stirrups.

Okay, please abstain from comments about Chinese airbrushes. Honest question - what's the most likely cause of pic related? Not enough thinner? Leaking seal?
>>
>>97144572
It's completely normal, you are supposed to clean the paint from the needle during the painting. Most common ways are an old brush dipped into a cleaner or just your fingers.
You can prevent a fair bit of it with correct technique, but it will ultimately always happen.
>>
>>97144589
I should elaborate: accumulation of paint on the needle is normal. You are supposed to clean it during spraying (every airbrush is different, but generally speaking every few moments/minutes), to prevent paint drying up and clogging your airbrush.
>>
>>97144589
No, I mean I know about paint drying on the tip and having to remove it. Here paint somehow accumulated and dried between nozzle and main chamber, on the needle (not sure if I name parts correctly). I was paying attention not to pull trigger before pressing it, by the way.
>>
french spearmen
>>
>>97144572
>>97144657
Did that happen while you were airbrushing? In that case I don't think it dried as you worked, as the paint in there shouldn't have any exposure to air (when the nozzle is in place) until it's ejected out of the brush and sent on its way to the model. So instead I'd guess old gunk from an earlier painting session you didn't clean out, or you had a partially dried up bit in the paint pot that came along when you filled up the airbrush with paint, or if you thinned the paint then the paint and thinner may just hate each other intensely. (Vallejo paint + Mr Levelling Thinner for example results in cottage cheese.)
>>
>>97144713
Looking forward to seeing your bretonnia army in /wfg/ perrynig.
>>
>>97144572
that's not normal, it looks like your paint had lumps in it or you used the wrong thinner and that caused them
>>
>>97144718
Actually it was AK and Vallejo thinner but that worked just fine so far. I simply noticed that cleaning paint from the tip didn't improve spraying and at one point it stopped completely. When I removed paint from the cup and added cleaner and tried to flush it into this "cleaning cup", it started to backflow so I assumed it got blocked completely. Why, however, is beyond me.

Overall, this is new airbrush I got fully from "loyality program" points from shop I usually buy from and it looks odd to me. But I'm not very experienced either. I don't see seal for example, neither at the cup or at the back, manual is "generic" one that does not cover this specific model, except diagram with listed and named parts. It had some seals in small bag inside the box, which I assumed to be spares - some teflone, some rubber. It's also this so called "floating" nozzle.
>>
>>97144787
on a setup like that i would only expect one seal between the cup oppening and the trigger (teflon probably, you can't really see it unless you tear it apart) and the one sown on the thread at the front
>>

Cleaned, tested with other paint, same problem - needle inside was covered in paint that simply dried. Absolutely no idea what happened or why. Guess I will have to contact producer since I simply lack experience to diagnose myself. This white part on the front is supposed to be seal I guess (number 4 on schematic) but there is no inside the cup itself so maybe that's why.

Screw me, should stick to that simple Chinese ones at it least it worked without any fuss.

Do contrast/speed paints only work well if you do a zenithal prime? Or can you just do a grey prime?
>>
>>97145489
the o rings are to keep air from leaking out and to stop paint from going backwards instead of forwards. your blockage was where the paint is supposed to be so it probably doesn't have anything to do with the o rings. your problem is either that paint is drying on the needle while it's being used, in which case the solution is to add retarder or flow improver to make it dry slower, or that you didn't fully clean the paint after the last time you used it which allowed a solidified chunk to form inside, in which case the solution is to clean your tools properly.
>>
>>97145564
You just need a bright undercoat/primer so that it actually tints the surface. So an off white grey or cream
>>
>>97145564
Short answer, yes, but very light grey, preferably a white/cream though and not a medium grey.
Long answer:
They're still useful if you want to paint like that (I wouldn't recommend it but whatever). Zenithals, and drybrushing the highlights on before contrasts (slapchop) are extra things, in theory GW's intent with contrast was for you to put them directly on over top of an offwhite primer, and then do some edge highlighting and call it a day.
They're just thick washes. 'eavy Metal doesn't have volumetric highlights (not that they use contrast for 'eavy metal, but in general the style GW pushes) so none of that matters, the contrast is basically just giving you base + recess shading in 1 step rather than the two when you would base and then wash.
>>
>>97145599
It was very first use however. There is still a possibility that AK paints actually don't like Vallejo thinner. Violently. Still, thanks for helping out.
>>
>>97145489
are you simply letting go of the trigger? you should let just air flow for a little bit after stopping the paint.
>>
>>97145641
No, I was warned about that before so I made some "dry" training the trigger movement itself before, to always press, pull, back forward and only then release. Down, back, forward, up.
>>
>>97141994
Are those Knights of the everlasting Light? my favorite minor chapter man! Blue-white-gold is just peak.
>>
>>97145489
Seal inside the cup? It's one piece with the main body, so obviously no seal needle there. The rear opening for the needle at the bottom should have one, but that's not where you get a buildup of dried paint so probably not involved here. Front needle opening shouldn't have a seal, that's where the paint leaves the cup for the nozzle.

>>97145641
He appears to be getting the buildup inside of the nozzle, between it and the needle, so I don't think it's the trigger technique since this is where the paint's supposed to be. The question is why the hell it manages to dry out on its way from the cup to the nozzle.

There are two aspects to undercoating for contrast/speed/transparent paints:

#1: Premade shadows and highlights. This is the zenithal priming, from either rattlecans, airbrushes or drybrushing.

#2: The actual undercoat paint.

Point #2 is where the real magic happens. If I'm painting a part of the model with a wood texture, I'm not going to bother zenithal priming it, because I know I'm a messy painter and I'll get some splotches onto it. Instead, I'll just apply the bright undercoat, then Wyldwood Contrast over it.

But you need to choose the right shade for #2. Games Workshop/Citadel has three "special" paints exactly for this, and it's no coincidence they now have rattlecan versions of each one: Grey Seer, a cool bright grey, Wraithbone, a warm bright cream, and White Scar, a pure white. You can get (and probably should get) a matching paint shade from other manufacturers, but Citadel Grey Seer and Wraithbone have very good performance and coverage.

The undercoat changes what happens when the contrast/speed paint is applied. You can see charts online. I tend to prefer a warm off-white as my basecoat. Because pure black and pure mid-grey shades can look a bit off when contrast/speed paints are applied, many people prefer to do zenithal priming with dark-brown as shadows and a bright cream as highlights, rather than pure black going to pure white.

>pic related
the skin on these hobgrotz is Citadel Iyanden Yellow over a zenithal priming of black-grey-white. I knew it would create this muddy greenish yellow look, and that's what I wanted.

After some research, I start to think it could be actually unpleasant reaction of AK paint with Vallejo airbrush thinner. Which is odd since I don't recall that before and both are waterbased acrylics. Still, this rise a question what should I use instead since AK dedicated thinners are rare in my country. Wouldn't expect pure water to be enough.

I don't understand why nothing works. I know how to paint. I've watched hours of tutorials. I've read pages of guides. I know how to thin, but it just doesn't thin right; it gets too runny if I add even a microdrop of water, and it gets grainy somehow too. My brushes don't keep a point. My wet palette dries up. The paint gets outside the lines. Everything is just fucking awful.

Are you mixing your paints enough? Try using medium, not water, and potentially try not using a wet pallet. Sometimes I use a silicon pallet if my paints are seeming unruly. Its not really consistent even within brands or the same colors. I'll switch between a wet pallet and dry pallet ad hoc if a bottle seems runny.
If youre using natural hair brushes they shouldn't really ever fray if youre cleaning them enough. But washes and contrast paints can wreak havoc on the ferrule due to their fluidity. You need to constantly clean the brush if it's a very watery or thin medium, honestly I just use a synthetic brush I intend to trash. Which might be happening if youre paint is too thin.

>pack up the gift all nice and even wrap it in Christmas paper
>take it to the post office
>they want eighty bucks to send it less than twenty miles over the border
Yeah, fuck that.

Thanks, I think 1/48 scale tanks would fit my project. But I think I should 3d print their turrets for more scifi weapons.

Merry Christmas, anon. You got yourself a present.

>The cons outweighed the pros when I considered it.
Pros
>works very well with mats and terrain
>you don't have to work on the base
>looks unique as not many people use them
Cons
>??
>>
>>97149777
>base frosts with glue
>models look like they're floating
>can't place character in their environment
>miss out on making scenes on larger/character bases
>tactical rocks/integrated terrain looks weird as fuck and can't easily be carved away and swapped for something more thematic
>>
>>97149777
post a pic of your clear bases anon
>>
>>97149789
>base frosts with glue
Skill issue
>models look like they're floating
If you are playing on a flat bare table sure
>can't place character in their environment
"The rat has a sewer base and the ogre a rocky base, in any terrain ok!" This is just autism
>miss out on making scenes on larger/character bases
The diorama club is that way -->
>tactical rocks/integrated terrain looks weird as fuck and can't easily be carved away and swapped for something more thematic
I absolutely give you that one
>>
>>97149814
>If you are playing on a flat bare table sure
nta, it doesn't matter, they look like floating because they are literally 3 o 4mm above the surface of the table on a transparent disc

also
>if you want to magnetize them for transport or whatever it will look like shit
>if you have to pin a metal model it will also look bad
>>
>>97149657
>Also what model?
Just some random 3d print file
>>
>>97149755
That's definitely a good idea.
>>
>>97149163
I have not seen one single anon complain about what they got and I am doing this for seven years now.
>>
>>97149951
I remember there being one a couple of years ago where they essentially got 1 model and a snack
>>
Hey anons, I got an airbrush this month. It's been fun just trying stuff and learning. Any books or tutorials that helped you learn?
>>
>>97149970
H&S official YT channel is pretty good, obviously they use their own products but aside from that, they have very reasonable explanations without any memes or other bullshit.

How many paint balls do I put into a single bottle?
I got my order of AK 3rd gen paints since some anon vouched for them, ordered army painter "agitators" to put into them.
How many per bottle? I do have some citadel paints, how many for them too?
1 or 2?
Also any advice on the best dark teal/turquoise armor plate colors for skavens? The citadel paint app is very weird, I thought stormfiends had those dark green armor, but turns out they are blue in the app.
>>
>>97149961
I feel like that's justified somewhat.
>>
>>97150049
Yeah it absolutely was and iirc everyone in the thread thought so too.
>>
>>97149951
I mean I got grinched two years in a row but I guess that doesn't count huh

My gf got me a mini of my favorite Digimon for my birthday.
Base coating is mostly done, clean-up and detailing to follow.

thanks anon, I actually picked up an H&S airbrush so I should have checked out their channel sooner. I've heard good things about Angel Giraldez's infinity book, but I can't find it anywhere in Japan

Based, which one you got?
>>

Infinity 2024 since I want to go for some small detail work and use it in multimedia stuff for my regular artwork too
>>
>>97150259
Based, I also own Infinity. It's an incredible airbrush.

I got into bulding minis a few months ago, already sank hundreds into plastic crack and I still haven't played a game.

Trying to make some Sassanids here's my warlord/Shah kitbash. I might add a cape.
