How does BT anon paint white?
>>97198617I never saved the exact method but I think I remember him saying its corax white thinned with white ink instead of water.
>try to paint white with volumetric highlights>it just looks like I did a bad nmmoh well, guess he's just grey now
>>97199055I'm gonna be honest with you anon, that color placement doesn't appear deliberate.
>>97199068>put model under lamp>paint where the bits are shinyidk what to tell you
>>97199081
>>97199113It looks messy and there is not enough contrast between colors.
>>97199055>>97199113That's a very nice kitbash, anon. You could get an airbrush and have the volumetrics in like ten minutes.
>>97199055>>97199113I mean you could probably slap some contrast or inks over some of it to get some colour back into it. Or just add colour normally. It doesn't have to just be grey.
>>97199135what colors in the white armor would you suggest replacing?unless you mean I should just darken the recesses>>97199146thanks, I feel like I lean on my airbrush too much and I haven't really gotten much better at painting so this project is meant to get me out of my comfort zone>>97199162I wanted the gang to look more like pic related so the lack of color isn't a problem to me I'm also partially color
Big boy for necromunda
>>97199185what do you have planned for the right arm?
Started painting an Ushabti, I like these models a lot.
>>97199222Bionic arm holding an axe or whatever I decide looks badass. Going for a biker-themed venator gang.
>>97199177They have green, red and brown on them though. It's smart use of minimal colour. Paint your grenades and your belts washed out colours and I think that will be enough colour to really stand out and add to the effect. Also>I'm also partially colorSame here. 1% African.
>>97199177>>97199371I should also add that the way they've taken that photo adds a lot to the effect. You'll never get it to look like that in bright daylight with a mixed background on a low end phone camera like you have. So don't feel too bad about it. Dark background, and low ISO does wonders to make shit look better than it actually is. I cheat using it all the time.
>>97199185Really nice jacket anon.
>>97199162>just slap contrast on it This is such dumb parroted advice and will make it look even worse>>97199113The issue is you're trying to use a painting style you're not trained in. That sketchy kind of technique needs to be done with intention and lots of practice or knowledge or , yes, this is how it will turn out looking, like shit, to be direct. If you did the same type of lighting technique a bit better but doing it as and over a normal paintjob you would have been fine
>>97199371>>97199388>Same here. 1% African.woops meant to say color blindI didn't even catch there was green on the inspo photo but I've gone and added a bit more color and will play around with making the grenades yellowand yeah I get that camera and lighting play a bunch into making models look better, I'm pretty sure the guy literally just washed nuln oil over white bc you can see all the tide marks still>>97199397>turn out looking, like shitgotta practice somehow, I'll keep working at it
South Carolina anon. I've send your package yesterday, but goddamn Japan post clercs went ballistic over the word "pigment". Not even help from my local friend helped. Also they took out two bottles of texture paste. It's especially frustrating, since last year it was totally fine, when I've sent the same stuff. At least they didn't steal the sweets.
My phone still can’t focus for shit
>>97199397>This is such dumb parroted advice and will make it look even worseI mean I've never used contrast, but from what I've seen, you paint in greyscale and then put contrast on. But you're right, I shouldn't give advice on things I haven't done myself.
>>97199487nice!
>>97199647Nice smooth skin
Just finished 2 squads of kabalites for the army, largely happy with how they turned out. may have gone a little overboard with the dust on their boots though.
Will magnetized minis get TSA to get frisky with my models? I've read horror stories about them getting demolished and I dunno if that rings true.
>>97199873They'll detain you while they battle it out in another room.
>>97199873They will shove them up their butt in front of you then claim they never existed
Hey fellas, can anyone give me a recommend for a paint to use for this kind of terracotta roof tile, and also the whitish stone? I can get citadel, Vallejo and AP in my area
>>97199949Forgot damn image
>>97199954You're gonna burn through paint painting terrain. Just find some cheap shit or use colours you already have that you never use and mix them til you get what you want. Like I bought a bunch of Vallejo paints and then realised I hate them, so I only use them for terrain now.
>>97199954>>97199949could go for reaper triadslooking at what's on my rack, the vallejo mahogany brown is a bit more red than pic related. The amaranth red is probably too saturated on its own so you may need to desaturate it a bit, closer to the scale 75 paints
Done with my first mordheim Orcs, got a few more to go.
>>97198587a little late but here's the holiday jhonny
>>97199055>putting this much work into a model while leaving giant moldlines everywhereJesus fucking christ anon, what are you doing
>>97200159Highly adorable.
>>97199081I told you that was a scam but here you are perpetuating the cycle of abuse
>>97199757Dust looks fine, scheme is effective.
>>97200161what's retarded is that I shaved the ones off the other guyoh well
>>97200444Move your camera back a bit when you take photos. It wont look as muddy and blurred that way. Also try not to have things in the background.
/40kg/ is unusable. Here's the guy I worked on today.
>>97200757Yes it is!Looks pretty good so far.
>>97200757Ho Ho HoNow I've got a melta.
>>97200757Will you stop bitching
>>97200802Get the fuck out of here slopper
>>97200808No because I am working on my Hellblasters, what are you working on?
How do I fix if I put on too much wash and the mini got too dark at places? Should I just paint a very very thinned layer of the base color over it?
>>97200819You aren't working on those, you haven't put any new paint on them in months>>97200843Yeah you can glaze over with your mid tone till you get the desired coverage
>>97200843Yeah just paint over it. That's the normal process. It's a back and forth process. Very few things work in one pass.
>>97200849>>97200853Great, thanks.
>>97200849Im in a rut I told you asshole
>>97200843While its still wet you can soak the excess up with a dry brush and then wash off any residue with water-logged brush.
>>97200843I often basecost, wash, then drybrush the basecoat back on where I want it. It’s a little inefficient in paint but you can be very sloppy that way.
>>97200880I want to rut in your asshole
>>97200899
>>97200843stop using acrylic washes and you can just wipe it off
>>97200444Are these recast? That mouldline is so weird
>>97200430Cheers, anon
>>97200757Yeah I'm reaching a point where I've had about enough of the constant bait and shitstirring from certain people. I just want to talk about cool models, see people's cool models and occasionally post models.
>>97200895I love painting like this, it's really nice for setting yourself up for skin
>>97200981Hard to tell, the image is washed out an blurry. Can you give us a better picture?
>>97199388that is the shoop ment to make fun of photoshop anon
>>97200997What?
>>97198855Seems too white
Is it possible to preshade if the main colour will be black?
>>97201057Ah, sorryThis post was meant for /gpg/ on /m/
Went in for some face practice tonight. it's a little rough but I didn't spend long on it. I think it turned out pretty well.
I recently finished a one-off slaneshii kitbash. I would have given her a crab claw, but I was out of spawn bits.It was an interesting test to paint skin on a larger model (50mm base). I see I could have blended more, but I'm reasonably satisfied.
>>97201101tummy
>>97200757are you doing a Christmas themed marine or what's up with these colors
>>97201213hes called sallyanon, they all look like thatone of the /40kg/ regulars
Think I am done with this one.
>>97201101> using a skull as a ballgagI don't know why but I found that amusing.
>>97201249Uh oh, stinky
>>97201057It's easy enough if you're not slathering everything in pure black - just look at any tutorial for painting black with Contrasts or similar. Since you mention this is for /m/, you can absolutely get the same sort of effect with an airbrush.
>>97200843Embrace the word and gospel of our lord and savior Oil Washes.
>>97201057Sure. You could also post-shade if you are unsure.
>>97201508>Oil Washesyeah lemme just wait 6-8 business days to paint a mini
>>97201533Easy, just batch paint. If you plan it right, it's a lot faster and simpler than acrylics.
Finishing riptide #2 this weekend
>>97201705I'm suddenly craving processed cheese
>>97201705I will be repeating myself, but it needs some weathering, anon. Don't be afraid of it, it's easy and fun.
>>97198617It depends on the part of the armour, for the ceramite I tend to do what anon said >>97198855 and eventually dirt it up with a wash, but when painting cloth I usually layer/blend a scale of beiges and offwhites>>97201101Good work, cute bird>>97201249Looks nice. I just think it could maybe use a bit more contrast to make the different details stand out, like harsher shadows, and stronger/different colours on the cloth (skins?) parts maybe; it has a bit of the typical death guard effect- the pea soup look, but then again that's kinda appropriate and possibly what you were going for>>97201097Good practice with the shadows and highlights. You can try and put a gloss coat, apply a mid tone glaze then finish with a matt coat again to make it look a bit less rough if you want, that's what I usually do with my faces. Also that eye could use some sclera
>>97201746Not even weathering. Just any sort of highlight at all. It's just flat colours all over every one of his suits.
>>97201705You forgot to paint the Tau logo gold on the right
>>97201705Nice Yellow boy king, come back to 40kg. I miss you G.

Anyone ever tried pic related and had issues with it? I've used it unthinned through my airbrush and even after a day of waiting I could just rub it off of the mini. The Panzer Grey and Black primers from Vallejo don't have that issue (sprayed a few models to test it and after a few hours of wait the primer doesn't rub off) or could I have just gotten a shitty bottle?
>>97202639>>97202653Stop replying to the shitposter already he does this every time a 40kg poster shows up here
>>97202655It's one of my favorite primers, never had any problem with it. I always thin it (roughly 3:1 paint:vince's mix), as any other Vallejo primer.
>>97202653this was my first post in this thread retard but nice try
>>97202684>this was my first post in this threadnot the win you think it is

>>97202707no, that'd be (You) and your /40kg/ buddies
>>97201964Oh wait you said you're finishing not that you finished, my bad. Good work so far with the gunpla look
>>97202655Vallejo primer is pretty weird honestly. As you've said it makes this weird coat that shrinks after drying and adheres to minis that way. This causes it to be unsandable and a small rip can cause a bigger part of it to "shred". Since you have an airbrush already just bite the bullet and buy a proper mask along with Mr Surfacer, that shit is really nice. I've seen people here say the stynylrez is decent for an acrylic primer but I didn't try it yet.
>>97202725>clean the mini before priming with a very dilluted IPA>thin the primer>airbrush few thin layersI've never had any trouble with Vallejo primers.
>>97202655did you wash your parts before you sprayed it?
>>97202750in soapy warm water
>>97202737>>97202754What also helps is applying the primer (as with most other things with airbrush) in short bursts, basically constantly cradling your trigger back and forth, instead of just braaaaping it continuously. You want to keep the paint kinda satin-like, the moment it gets glossy/wet, stuff might get fucky.
>>97202725>This causes it to be unsandable and a small rip can cause a bigger part of it to "shred".That's how the gloss black "Metal Color"-line primer of theirs behaved the one time I tried it. And that's why I never used it again. Utter shite.
>>97201237>>97202494Not Sallyanon. I just thought it would be fun to paint 1 dude in his chapter colors. Gonna use him for SM ops
Apologies if wrong thread. I got the AoS introductory set and I've made some progress, ended up brushpriming everything with Vallejo black, apparently it's airbrush primer but people said it works for brushing as well. This is my first ever coat of paint (Retributor Armour) and I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong, it's really streaky/patchy and it doesn't feel like it's doing what it's supposed to be doing. I tried some parts with it straight out of the bottle and some watered down, but it really doesn't feel like it made a difference. Is coat #2 going to fix everything and it's just a case of "trust the process"? Should I even need a coat #2 if I did everything right with a pre-primed model?
anchor knight WIP
>>97202890Getting a solid coat over the primer in just a single coat is very, very rare. Coat #2 is where you can start hoping to have full coverage, though it isn't terribly rare to need even more. Thinning the paint (with water in this case, but some paints prefer or demand other thinners)) doesn’t help this, on the contrary it makes the paint cover even less. You thin the paint to make sure it goes on smooth and even, without adding texture to smooth surfaces or gunking up detail. The loss of opacity is something you then just have to deal with by painting more layers. (Many thin layers do result in an overall thinner coat with less risk of obscured details than one thick coat.)
>>97202890>Should I even need a coat #2 if I did everything right with a pre-primed model?Depends on the colour of the primer and how see-through the paint on top will be. With black primer you are pretty likely to need a second coat.
>>97202911Awesome, thanks for the info. I'll keep going then and hopefully the final result is somewhat decent
Finished the characters of my custodes.Might do a better pic later.

RB from Oregon, please tell me you actually got your gift, and some porch pirate didn't make off with it. USPS says they delivered it early Monday morning.
>>97202890Covering black primer is like that, most paints will take at least two thin coats. If you want to do a heavily weathered corroded gold look you can do one coat and lean into the uneven coverage, make those spots darker for weathering or damage. A second thin coat will look a lot more even if that's what you want.
>>97203442>corroded goldThat's not how it works, anon.
>>97202966what's with the neck light?
>>97203475some 40k models just have dramatic neck lightingit's supposed to be displays and readouts built into the gorgets
>>97203457It isn't, but its a way to add contrast. Same reason people put verdigris on metals that aren't copper or bronze, or highlighting black with blue, or highlighting red with orange. Creating more visual interest on our tiny plastic guys.
>>97202966I feel like you should blend the glow a bit or something, it looks especially weird on the bald guys face

>>97203598Still haven't gotten mineral spirits so I'm still stripping old models as I have the energy. >>97204187Looks a bit like some Loony Tunes character and I love it.
>>97204091Depends on the primer, if it's actively tacky it might not be fully cured yet, but most primers have a little grab to them if you touch
That's all I can muster up for one day, man are my hands tired. Pretty decent result if I do say so myself, a bit of over/underpaint on a few places but all in all I can't complain too much.I think the most difficult thing for me is going to be to learn how much to thin paints, all of the non-metallic parts are looking quite messy. I did only do one coat because it already felt a bit too thick. Can I go back over small spots and paint in the right colors or is it going to create noticeable bumps?
Since somebody mentioned primers - I recently tired using Vallejo Mecha Color ones and they indeed formed quite nice and even layer, especially black. But while they accepted airbrushed paint nicely, they somehow seemed to repel paints I tried to apply with normal brush.I don't really want to get back to using spray cans, are AK or GSW primers similar in behaviour?
>>97198561Finally got 1k of my red corsairs done for my game on Monday
>>97204240What brand of paint? I've found pro acryl and msp bones and scale75 don't like to stick to any Tamiya or Vallejo primers, can or airbrush. I've read Vallejo has a waxy medium that causes certain paints to adhere poorly but I've got no clue
>>97204233Nice job anon, far cleaner than my first mini
>>97204240I tend to use Blick airbrush primers (cheap, and hey, it's just primer) and they've been fine. I also have regular Vallejo and they've been fine too. Hope it helps.
>>97204254Interesting, I admit that while I sprayed Vallejo and AK paints just fine, I tried to brush paint TTC instead so maybe that was the case. Still, I wouldn't like to have situations where I need separate type of primers for different brands of acrylics.
>>97204032I think it looks great, although the orcs seem to have blown the turret and tracks off it. :)
