Thank you baker san.

What are people's hobby goals for 2026?
I'm going to try and paint at least 1 model per month, and also improve my 2d art and rendering skills.

Contrastslopping is handicapping your development as a painter. Contrastslop should be a tool used by people who have mastered the basics, not as a crutch for those who don't want to learn to paint.

Where’s the mini from?

>>97292692
He’s not bad but he is rather flat. Each individual bit of the model is too uniformly light, mid, or dark. The flesh tones and skulls could use a wash to add deeper shadows and then a highlight to bring back the lightest tones. The reds and blacks could use some layered highlights on upward facing surfaces.

I cracked this open for the first time. I knew it was basically pre-thinned, but it was way more watery than I was expecting. I shook the shit out of it to the point where it was bubbly when I screwed the cap off. Is that right?
Also the actual nozzle is real fucking weird.

It is, that stuff's not just pre-thinned, but pre-thinned for airbrush use.

is there a Payne's grey contrast paint? i got some of that color in a cheap amazon acrylic paint set and I like the color, the problem is that the amazon basics acrylic paint is just not for miniature painting. it ended up being kind of streaky but I liked how it ended up, so i was wondering if there was something similar with contrast paint?

My opinion, take ulthuan grey (a god paint) and mix it with your blue until you get the highlight color you want. If you have a shitload of minis to do then after you settle on what you want through experimentation you can buy a paint that is close.

Heat discoloration is blue-white at it's most intensive, it's right there, around the nozzle

That paint is one of the best steels in the game but it's very runny and liquid yeah. If you're having trouble with the paint overflowing on the mini, try wicking off excess paint from the brush on a very moist piece of paper towel. Something that doesn't shed particles. I find that using a bone dry paper towel soaks up way too much paint and moisture from the brush and you waste a ton of product.
>>
>>97294459
I've yet to find anything better
>>
>>97294380
heat discoloration only happens under specific circumstances that you would be unlikely to see on a gun. plus in a conventional gun the highest temperature is closest to the chamber and cools off towards the muzzle. idk about a laser gun, but I would imagine it would be still hottest at the point where the energy is being turned into light, rather than the point where it comes out of the gun. personally I think it's a stupid meme that has somehow taken off because people don't actually understand how it works irl. if you want to argue "I know it's not realistic but it's cool like star wars having sound in space" then there's no point in arguing about which order the colors would realistically go, put them however you think looks best.

Recommendations for quality airbrush paint? Looking to upgrade and try more detailed airbrushing.

I've ordered a couple from Vallejo and one from AP. Vallejo (black) worked OK in my workhorse Iwata Revolution but continually clogged my finer-nozzle Iwata Eclipse, which is the one I really bought it for. Wil try the AP today.

The weather is very dry here at the moment - should I give the Vallejo paint a second chance when humidity goes up? I don't want to have to thin airbrush paint every time - introduces variability (plus it's a pain in the ass). I'm fine to thin regular paints, of course.

Thanks!

All hobby airbrush paints are just pre-thinned regular paints, there's no magic to it. Oftentimes they require further thinning anyway, depending on your user case.
Buy normal paint of your preference and thin it. Vince's mix (80/20 thinner/flow improver) is still the king.
That said, grabbing a few shades of artist grade acrylic airbrush paints, like Aero from Schmincke might be a good idea, too, since they tend to be a lot nicer than hobby acrylics - especially for usually problematic colors, like white or yellow. They are a bit on the expensive side, though.

I just want to add - do not mix thinner and paints from different companies. When I added Vallejo airbrush thinner to AK paints, they turned into rubbery mess.

And question - I heard that Vallejo airbrush thinner and flown improver contains toxic stuff in it, mainly 2-Butoxyethanol. Is that true?
>>
>>97295864
The HP-CR is for standard zenithals and basecoating. The HP-CS will be for filters but especially for blending, at least if I can figure out the techniques. :)

>I just want to add - do not mix thinner and paints from different companies.
>When I added Vallejo airbrush thinner to AK paints
Weird, I do that nearly every night with no problems whatsoever. I think I went through 40+ AK colors without any trouble. I also mix Vallejo airbrush thinner/flow improver with Citadel and AP paints with no problem.
>Is that true?
Probably, it kinda smells like it. That said, it's a very low toxicity and you would need a LOT of exposure (~20 times more than what you get from airbrushing) for it to become even potentially dangerous. IIRC it's not carcinogenic with humans either.

>>97295911

The armor needs some shading, it's very flat now. Even just some basic zenithal/shading with airbrush would help it a lot.
The same applies to the banner. The freehand is lovely, but the fabric itself needs more contrast/shading.

is that freehand banner using metallic paints in a non metallic way? I'd suggest not using metallic paints but that's just personal preference. IMO it'd be much more readable and less muddy in purely non metallic metal. The head is looking very good and I'd watch if the leg flesh starts to get too thick with the layers of paint but looking good so far. Some thin glazes of that mint green on the undersides of the armor would make it nice -the back seems to pop more because of it- but idk what you're going for

white is really difficult paint to master and i have no idea why leviathan is one of the main paint schemes they decided to to advertise
next time you could try either thinning the wash or just washing the parts that clearly need it
or you could pick out all the raised areas with white now and go for the really striking contrast scheme
>>
>>97297437
>Airbrushing is awesome, but often ignored by mini painters for some reason
NTA but I never understood that honestly. It's especially surprising in people that buy GW kits. I mean you're spending so much on the plastic anyway, why would you skimp on a tool that can make certain parts of painting easier and faster?

Don't want to argue with your experience, I just say that I had this issue exactly with Vallejo airbrush thinner and AK paints, even posted about this here, confused. I also used "old" thinner (when they changed formula, they apparently removed mentioned 2-butoxyethanol), if that changes anything. It would right away cause paint to form thick, rubbery layer on needle, which didn't happen when adding just plain water to AK paints or Vallejo thinner to Vallejo paints (both new and old). Found old photo, this is how it looked like so I'm not making this up.
>>
>>97297486
>I also used "old" thinner
Maybe that's the reason, I've been using the reformulated one since the beginning.
>>
>>97297482
Probably because airbrush have less usage with minis than with larger scale models. Sure, it is very convenient to apply primer/varnish that way, base coat all over or do shading for contrast/ink usage. But with such tiny details, it really is easier to just use normal brush instead of being so super precise. Both tools have pros and cons but with minis, brush simply have more pros than airbrush.

when airbrushing first started to raise its head in the late 2000s everyone hated it and even here it was considered cheating

wanting to do the bare minimum to make your army look presentable is completely understandable, but I frequently see people who clearly put a lot of effort into their work and are asking for tips to get better flatly reject anything that isn't common within the gw community. if you tell them about wet palettes or glazing they are happy to give it a try, but if you suggest they use enamel paints or get an airbrush they will come up with excuses why they can't or don't want to. every time someone complains about painting trim I mention reverse washing and even post a video tutorial how to do it, but no one ever responds or says they will try it. in years of posting on this board I've only seen one person doing it and he clearly wasn't your typical warhammer painter.

Me experimental Uruk-hai are coming together nicely. I was going to do the other 4 units as good guy infantry but accidently painted them black. I am not sure what good guys to do. I might do 2x Rohirrim & 2x Elven. Then archers for both sides, then cav and finally artillery/monsters/elites.
Once they get a bit of detail they will look much better and then I need to see if I want painted spear tips or I cut the wire coating.
Unsure whether to bother with swords at this scale.

Didn't get a whole lot done today. Worked on the armor highlights some more and tried to get some interest on the mace. I'm trying to go for a vary dark metal with brightly exposed edges of the mace but I'm not getting the contrast I want. I've never had problems with citadel, old vallejo, TTC, or AP fanatic paints

I did get the same rubbery-mess issue with nu-vallejo. My mix was 80/20 of Vallejo's own thinner and cleaner. I use the same exact mix with other brands and it worked fine. I think it's the new paint formula Vallejo is using. It doesn't react well with their own airbrush thinner and I can see the paint seperating in the cup of my airbrush. It clogs in a few seconds

>>97297486
My clogs looked just like this but it would coagulate in my nozzle which was a bitch to clean. I had already bought a a bit of nu-vallejo by the time I got my airbrush so I had to start using water instead of thinner. It mostly solved the problem but it required more coats. it's a big reason I'm transtitiong away from nu-vallejo and towards AK, TTc, and Ap now.
>>
>>97299979
Just more clean-looking, removing brush marks for consistency and all.
>>
>>97300033
I've had similar clogging on the needle and inside the nozzle with both old Vallejo model colors and the new Game Color range, as well as AP Fanatic. Tried all sorts of thinner + flow improver ratios with both Vallejo and AP thinner. Even water as you did. Nothing worked for me. Got clogging, tip drying, splattering, you name it. Even if I was cleaning the tip with Tamiya cleaner every 15 seconds it would still clog, I wish I was exaggerating but it's been a goddamn nightmare running these paints through my H&S Ultra 2024.

Meanwhile my AK and Pro Acryl paints work like a charm with no effort. With AP or Vallejo thinner and no flow improver, haven't even needed to get specific thinners for them. And I can simply eyeball the ratios and it just works.

>>97301114
If you have spray can warmed up with room temperature, you can cover it in bubble wrap to keep it warmed for longer, that helps a lot.

Aside from that, airbrushing acrylic primer is still an option and does not require very advanced setup. Cardboard box would catch whatever fails to land on a model and P3 half-mask will catch any particles that would still bounce into air - and only stay there for few minutes since they are actually quite heavy and large enough (even atomized) to avoid Brownian motion. Just open window after work for few minutes to clean air and you are good to go. Vallejo Mecha Color primers are quite good and easy to use. I only have my desk to work at and everything is fine.

large open surfaces are hard to paint hence contrast paints and some weird cool factor

i have no problem with that and check out how csm used to look 20 years ago, people hated painting the rim/trim back then too and these days it has gotten so ridiculous that some people actually paint the clutter first because its most of the new models

These he used either as exotic gifts to snivelling, sycophantic courtiers or as his own personal concubines. It is said that during lavish parties held just before the city of sin was cleansed with fire, the depraved Count instructed his Amazon harem to perform an exotic dance for his noble guests. Most of the guests were so overcome by the mesmerising dance that many of the Amazons were able to escape the the palace and city into the surrounding countryside.”

Simply picking suitable colours will get you far, pic (IMHO) related.
Gigging deeper, unless you have very "pure pigmented" paints (which usually corresponds to poor coverage, making it not so popular with miniature paints nowadays) you can loose a lot of saturation with mixing, and so in this specific case going for lighter and darker (and, obviously, as saturated as you can find) shades out of the bottle for your shading&highlights instead of mixing your own may actually help significantly.
If you use a suitable colour (basically yellow, orange, pink/magenta or green) you can also use fluorescent paints as a glaze on top of everything to help liven it up (fluo paints usually have absolutely awful coverage, suitable for glazing but trying to use them as the main colour can be a nightmare).
>>
>>97302255
I was thinking these look like some of the 15th Century Swiss that Bryan Ansell's Foundry company makes, but they don't match any of the Swiss models Foundry still sells on their website. There are other manufacturers trying to capture the old 3rd Edition WHFB vibe, but Foundry was my first guess since these guys don't have slottabases.

>>
>>97302409
Yeah, >>97302371 looks nice but I specifically don't want nice, I want an overly colorful eyesore, that's why I left out white paints and inks (unless done as a basecoat to be glazed with strong pigments, but I have few paints suitable for that).

>>97302419
Better question about fluo colors is how long they actually last. Afaik it can be even as short as a few months, if not less until they lose the luminosity, ruining your paintjob.
>>
>>97302425
I really like that middle head - if you could make the goggle lens slightly more bulbous like this one, that'd be perfect and I'd aim to use it on one of my corsairs.

>>97302437
For eyesores obviously the highest value chromatic paints you can find.
But also think about the color ratios. People talk a lot about the 60-30-10 thing with your colors but if you leaned into things like having an equal split it will also look wrong to the eyes.

Like most such things it'll probably just end up looking like a partially gilded miniature, instead of someone in a gold dress expressed in the exaggerated-for-effect-style of normal miniature painting. You certainly won't get the kind of shading you see in that illustration unless you (very skilfully) paint it on top of the gold yourself. The clash between the gold foil dress and the rest will probably also ruin the illusion of the actually painted bits of the paintjob as well.

The thing about high tier NMM is that it's not *real* reflections. Not in the obvious way, I mean the reflections aren't true to what you would really see in real life either. And as such you can't just take a picture of a reflective mini painted in chrome paint, or covered in gold leaf, recreate it, and assume that will look like good NMM.
It might give you an okay start, but really good NMM, in addition to the main reflections and shadows, and secondary reflections, also has completely made up areas of visual interest as well. It's not a purely technical exercise where you can just mentally ray trace each square millimeter, there is an art to it.
>>
>>97303260

I go out and shoot my own elves, then remove their bones and shrink them to 28mm size, mold them and cast metal miniatures from the molds. THEN I mine and mine and grind my own pigments and craft my own paints.

If you're going to do it, do it right... plus shooting elves brings its own joy! :D
>>
>>97303434
real reflections will always look better than fake ones, because as soon as you pick up your nmm and move it around you will notice that the reflections don't move, and depending on how gloss the finish is there will be real reflections on top of the fake ones.
>>
>>97303438
Then don't shade or highlight your minis.

This comment just tells me you've never painted good NMM or seen it irl. It looks fine irl, very striking even from different angles.
Myths repeated from people who have never actually done NMM:
>It only looks good from 1 angle
>unless you do everything perfectly and consistently across every part of the model the illusion falls apart
Neither of those are true. There are elements to them that are true, and obviously NMM takes inspiration from real reflections, but it is a different skill than "I'm just going to paint the ray traced version".

>>
>>97303523
it literally is. when you are looking at a shiny metal object you are expecting it to look a certain way. with nmm you can meet that expectation close enough so that even if it isn't completely realistic it makes you think "this is a shiny metal object right?" but when you pick up a metal object and rotate it or even if you just move your head side to side you expect the reflections to move, and nmm can't do that and will instantly look like an illustration instead of the real thing.

>>
>>97303609
You're confusing looking like a real reflective surface with looking visually interesting or impressive. Yes, I agree the NMM doesn't look 'like real metal' if you move it, but it can and does look good from every angle, and when done well it looks significantly better than an actual gold reflective surface on a miniature even though you would be able to tell that it was actual gold if seeing it in motion.

the most impressive thing a miniature can do is look exactly like a shrunken version of the real thing. when you interact with miniatures are you just looking at photographs from single angles or are you picking them up and moving them around? even if you aren't using it as a toy and just have it on a shelf most people will try to look at it from different angles, if only to see what the back looks like.

Sometimes the mechanics behind the motivations in Mordheim seemed really strange. The Sisters of Sigmar, for example, capture the Wyrdstone shards so that their convent's Matriarch can lock them away, safe from the other factions. That they get a reward at all represents the Matriarch granting them extra resources as a reward in return for their exemplary service.

Wouldn't you just release *all* your resources to make your convent's few warbands as potent as possible in the hope that you can conquer the evils that dwell in the ruined city? Why hold back?

Similarly, having the Orcs go to Mordheim actively searching for Wyrdstone instead of a chance for epic battles against non-Orcs was a real stretch to me. The Orcs don't understand the value of Wyrdstone - it doesn't even do anything for their Shamans in da roolz - and none of the human factions would trade or cooperate with them. How to they profit from it?

Goofy-ass motivations aside, da roolz for da Orc warband were pretty neat.

The resources may be more of a steady-ish income and manufacture than there just being a ig pile of stuff hoarded together Once Upon a Time. So they're spending largely as much as they can each budgetary time period, and you can't have an extra crossbow this month without someone else getting one less because the extra crossbow won't get manufactured until next month.

How do I properly handle greenstuff? Every go I've had with it tracks every little thing that makes contact with it like the tools and gloves I'm using. NTA and I don't know if he did it like that but a decent way to go about it is basecoating everything with white and then picking out the coils with a very bright version of the color you want them to be. You can get a bit more fancy and do some blending so that it's brighter towards one side etc. Unless of course you were asking about paints he used in which case you'll have to wait for his reply.

Bolts are two-stage: first a conventional propellant charge to ensure high stopping power at close range, then a rocket engine for high accuracy and speed over long range. Silencers would work for the initial propellant detonation.

I haven't done any Warhammer stuff in a long, long time. My dad bought me the Lizardmen versus Bretonnian starter pack when I was a larva and I thought about those days a lot over the holidays.

Picked this up today. I have no idea what the rules are but I'm looking forward to assembling and painting these guys.

There's a lot of stuff on these sprues and I'm not really sure how to go about assembling a kit so complicated.

Any tips?

Should I look at the rules or something? ...I don't think I'm actually gonna ever play the game.

The Sisters are stretched very thin - they had enough resources to go doorkicking if some dipshit was playing at Wizard Bullshit with the powers of Chaos, but that does not translate into
>we can feed and arm hundreds of new Novices to War Priest standards
>And take on the remaining portion of the city's population who has turned to Chaos
>plus all this mercenary filth streaming in to play with Demon Cheetos
>while also guarding the ragged remnants of the faithful huddled beneath the Rock or outside the walls
You're assuming everyone in the city isn't starving, desperate for any weapon or scrap of steel they can forge into one, and (at least in the Sisters' case) planning for the long haul in case they have to hold out for years.

I'm in a bit of a pickle, anons.
The way I have assembled my Warhound has him leaning slightly without having something under his foot to keep him level(see pic related, stuffed some crap under the toe). It seems stable enough but I'm scared of him potentially toppling over and crashing into the ground one of these days.

I'm not sure how to proceed with it because I would have, the way I see it, there's several ways to do it:
1. Huge round base(which will make it a pain to transport)
2. Huge oval base(which will look awkward, with the Warhound moving on at a different angle than the base would suggest
3. Two smaller bases for each foot
4. A scenic "footprint"(kinda like for buildings) for the forward foot that lets it rest the foot at an angle, I could probably even magnetize it for transport

I'm leaning towards the last option, but I'd like some input.
>>
>>97307263
i wondered why did you pose the legs like that so i assumed you were going to put her on a base
would maybe go with 4
>>
>>97307263
Yeah 4 is the way to go here
>>
>>97307293
>>97307320
I just wanted a dynamic pose, it was close what I was going for, but the lean was bothering me. The torso is on an axis I made out of a nail, so it can rotate freely, but if I rotate it perpendicular to the legs, it will fall over eventually, when the weapons are attached. Time to think of a base for this thing.

>There's a lot of stuff on these sprues and I'm not really sure how to go about assembling a kit so complicated.
>Any tips?
Get yourself two bottles of Tamiya Extra Thin Cement. Chop up the leftover sprues and throw them into one of these bottles to make sprue goo. This stuff melts the plastic and is good for filling gaps. Combined with the plastic cement - which can both glue together the mini, remove mold lines and soften up excessive sprue goo blobs - you're set for both assembly and gap filling. There are other great methods of gap filling like milliput thinned with IPA, but this is the easiest one for beginners. But do it. Big gaps around arms and shit are fucking ugly and ruin your mini.

Bonus tip - grab a bottle of Tamiya Airbrush cleaner as well. This is the same stuff as Tamiya Extra Thin Cement but in a way bigger bottle offering more bang for your buck. You'll still want two bottles of cement though, they come with very handy brushes built into the lid.

Nah I never really strip minis that I consider done and same with changing weapons. I consider gap filling for aesthetics more important than weapon swapping I guess.

Yes, then I wised up, realized it's retarded, and decided not to strip/repaint anything until I paint my whole backlog. I have a large backlog.
>or never purchased second hand models only to find out they had been put together by 8 year old and basically unsalvageable
No? I never buy used minis sight unseen.
And I don't see why I should care and deliberately compromise on build quality, which WILL directly impact my enjoyment of the finished product, so that maybe, possibly, in some theoretical future timeline, some random online asshole is not inconvenienced in ruining it.

What even is push fit? Like it snaps in place? All my models l have to glue and have numbered parts.
>>
>>97308532
Yeah push fit is when the pieces have pins and tight fitting holes so you can (in theory) just push them together and they'll stay together from the tightness of the pin fit, as opposed to older models where you'd have ball joints, flat surfaces or maybe a loose fit protrusion and would absolutely need glue to hold it together.
Many push fit connections are too tight to get a good fit on though so a lot of people cut the pins down/off and glue them anyway.
>>
>>97308532
Yes, they are models that have pins and holes that allow you to put them together without a need for glue. Downside is, they're completely monopose because of it, no customization unless you convert them.
>>
>>97308638
>Many push fit connections are too tight to get a good fit on though
Oh good, I had to trim all the pegs and I was wondering if this was a production fault or just me being retarded.
