>>97307836I like these guys a lot.>>97307876Also nice. The camo is surprisingly clean given the size. I think highlights on the bolter's grip could be a little more intentional and directional.
>>97307876How did you do volumetric on these guys? Those sponge makeup aplicators?
>>97308054Airbrush. It's just basecoat and two gradually smaller/brighter highlights. Then darker oil wash from below.
>>97308097>>97307876Looks sexy, any special technique for the camo? Apart from patience and brush control of course.
>>97308112My only take from that experiment is to worry less about specific colors, since you can just use a filter on it later. I originally painted fairly color accurate (new) tiger stripe, but it was too bright for the rest of the scheme. So I just sprayed a few layers of biel-tan green over it. I'm pretty sure you could probably just do it in greyscale and then just use contrasts over it. Also, chances are that some scale modeller autist already developed a perfect simple way of painting that specific camo scheme, so googling it helps a lot.
>>97307962>I think highlights on the bolter's grip could be a little more intentional and directional. That's a good idea, thanks anon.

How the fuck do I stop this from happening? It happens with all my brushes, literally after like a couple minutes of using them.
>>97308261Curled tips? Major issue for synthetics, I don't think it can be fixed.Buy some nice natural hair brushes and make sure to treat them with love (and brush soap)
>>97307789Eyyy cheers!Started work on the weapons platform crewman as the starweaver arrived. It seemed a crime to not convert this guy so the armoured crotch gets put to use. Still waiting on the bits order for the arms though.
A last picture before I finish the lenses and go to town on the weathering. I always worry I'll bugger it up
>>97308312
>>97308261You have to embrace the hook brush painting style.
I'm painting some normans and their doggies, I've never really done grass bases properly and don't have a static grass applicator. does the grass look really bad? I might just add some tufts later if I find them to hide the grass -that I must've bought as a kid 15 years ago. Also I hope that doggy reads as white fur
>>97308312>>97308323feels like it belongs on a racetrack, not a battlefield
>>97308384>>97308312Feels Ghibli-esque with how festive it is. Reminds me of the planes from Porco Rosso which were ostensibly warplanes
>>97307836these look pretty nice, if the yellow is contrast paint, your paintjob hides it pretty well and the pooling giving this high contrast looks cool.
>>97308312i remember some anon hated the cast iron look but i like italso there is something about seeing a basic clean even paintjob for the longest time
>>97308312I know this feeling all to well anon.It took me a YEAR to force myself to come back to this project and make it ready for oil washes.Speaking of oil washes, how the hell am I gonna handle same of those parts when they're all greasy?
>>97308399Those planes were actually colorful, they didn't really bother with camo in ww1.
>>97307962>>97308411thank you and at first i was sure i could pull off painting one model every day for the rest of the year but getting this much done in 3 months is pretty good too>if the yellow is contrast paintbasecoat is imperial fist yellow and sadly it really shows on the vehicles standing next to infantry, they look too bright and clean imho
>>97308686If that's a problem then don't apply the wash to the entire part in one go? Once whatever thinner you've used has evaporated the dried oil wash that remains shouldn't be very greasy, otherwise I'd guess you used a massive amount of it and skipped the "draw out excess oil step of preparing the wash. Sure, you might still get some fingerprints here, and smudge some excess to where it shouldn't be over there in the initial cleanup phase, but that's kind of the beauty of it, you can just fix that too towards the end when there's not really any extra left around to make a mess with. (All said and done I didn't have any issues with handling the 1/32 Viggen I built during the wash phase, so that titan should be entirely manageable.)Now if you do have sections that are supposed to have a coating of oil-based stuff that are large and open enough that you may end up smudging and ruining them even when it's all finished, then seal that part with acrylic varnish before moving on to the next section.Much of this you may already know of course (what's in your pic doesn't exactly look like little Timmy's first model), but since I don't know what you know exactly...
>>97308794oof yeah, still looks greatI don't know the million 40k marine versions, are these 3d prints?
>>97308712Ah that makes sense. That movie took place between WW1 and 2 iirc
>>97308712>>97308399>>97308712>>97308872NTA, but it's a mix, and not because of the colours. I finally finished my test model squad>>973087945th edition army? Looks fantastic. Lovely work
These units should be on 50mm bases and are basically useless on the tabletop. I doubt my opponents will have issues with the base sizes for heavy bolters
>>97307876this is SICK. Top tier camo work as well.
>>97309128Thank you, anon! Luv your heavy bolter team.
>>97309134I can't achieve the quality you're painting at so I'm working with what I have. The imperial guard traitors have 150~ infantry so I'm trying to keep it dirty and quick. I'm basically dumping pigments after I finish the sponge weathering and washes. The models look great without the 2 colors of dry pigments but I like the warmth the orange and light brown bring to the tabletopBack to the meat dragon this week. I want it finished before end of month
Got the acrylic rod sorted along with all the cleanup and gap filling for the starweaver.

If I want to get acrylic paint from non-hobby sources, what kind should I buy?>heavy body>fluid>soft body>professional>semi-transparentwhat's most like hobby acrylic paint?
>>97309447Never looked much into it and I don't really know what brands would be considered non-hobby, but I'd go with heavy body acrylics that you can just squeeze out and thin so you get a lot of value out of the tube. You can always thin paint if it's too thick, but it's much trickier to fix consistently if it's too thin to begin with. That said, isn't non-hobby paint not that great for hobby uses?
>>97309282bro, mine is an artus opus, I literally spent hundreds of dollars. Also happens with Windsor & Newton Kolinsky as well.
>>97309447I don't get it, why not just buy hobby paint at this point? It's not like they're difficult to find or anything
>>97309513Do you press the tip onto the model or just brush it to let the paint flow off?
>>97309515Maybe he can only get supplies from standard paint/do it yourself shops?
>>97309515i was just wondering. there's a huge selection of other acrylic paints on amazon, while the hobby selection is limited or has big shipping fees. my local game store doesn't do a good job of keeping their shelves stocked.
>>97309582Why not get the paints directly from manufacturer? I think pretty much all of them ship nearly worldwide.
>>97308828Yeah, I figured most of that stuff, but thanks for the advice nonetheless anon. Maybe I'll work my way from bottom to the top and just place all the parts on top of eachother once I'm done with them.
>>97309582In that case you can get some sets from amazon, but if you need a smaller selection of pots you can't go that wrong by buying from reaper, their range is pretty nice and they have a good pure white on top of that, plus you can squeeze in a few cheap minis to buff out the order and get free shipping.

I've got six or seven eldar corsair kitbashes to paint, plus a wraithlord, that's been sitting on the shelf primed for months. I want those all done by the end of the month let's see if I can get all my primed models painted by February. This fella has been languishing for a year now.
okay what the ACTUAL FUCKtrying to assemble these fucking shitass miniatures is driving me insane. every piece only fits with the exact right other pieces and the torsos are this stupid 3 piece thing that assembles into a hollow cylinder thing? They only gave me the exact right number of heads for the models so now I have a single saurus who has a stupid goatee? like what the shit????how do you anons kitbash these things? do you cut them up after their assembled or what?I got all the arms and heads on them and all the bodies together, and this is just like... way not how I remember this stuff being? I messed around with a carnifex and some thousand sons and gray knights in 2008~2010ish and I distinctly remember being able to pose stuff and do cool fun things with greenstuff... and this is just ratdicks in comparison?????am I doing something wrong or what???
>>97311784yes anon vast majority of GW stuff is now monopose
>>97311784Yeah, only way to make those noob friendly models work is by cutting down the parts to fit together how you want them to.As for the goatee, just clip it off.
>>97311784bro you're supposed to paint the plastic not your hands...
>>97311793WHY IS THIS POPULAR!?!This is fucking antithesis to hobbying and creativity? like??? and the fucking stockholm syndrome shit with the paint by numbers GW paint recipes? like oh my Seraphim cock sheathe and kroxigor nuts suck my ass bitch cunt FUCKWHY DOES ANYONE ASSEMBLE AND PAINT THESE>>97311807yeah but cutting them before I glue them together seems ???????? noob friendly????? I'm just gonna hack them apart later ig honestly retarded that anyone buys this shit. 200$ for the kit and each pot of paint is 10$ and I despise the stupid pots (but admittedly some of the paints are quite nice, even if I spill them out they turn into clumpy goop 1/2 way through using them because I can't figure out how to close the pot correctly) like is this just me getting filtered or is this actual garbage or what
>>97311784Most of the kits now are as kitbash-averse as humanly possible, yes. The quality is also very inconsistent; the detail is better across the board, but in multiple cases it's WORSE than it was before. That said, you can still kitbash a lot, but be prepared to sculpt/print a lot if you are into natural stuff/monsters.
>>97311852Anon, limitation breeds creativity, you can get as many if not more poses out of the models now, if you're willing to put in the work, which I assume you do since you want to get into the hobby and already have kitbashing in mind.>like is this just me getting filteredAs things look now, I'm sorry to say, it looks that way. The first thing I can suggest if you want to get into the hobby relatively seriously is working on your patience.
>>97311852>like is this just me getting filtered or is this actual garbage or whatIt's just monopose push-fit crap meant for idiots, because that's the majority of their audience. If you wanna get creative, you need some of the older sets they still sell or take the next step into conversions.
>>97311852In my opinion unfortunately it's just the natural progression of miniature "quality" if quality is more accurate poses. I haven't messed with those kits but kits like Tzaangors are egregious with that kind of monopose thing. But what it allows if for accurate musculature and muscle transitions. On "naked" fleshy creatures you kind of have to do it like this otherwise they'll look like action figures because their pectoral muscles aren't displaying the right action for lifting their arm for example. Kits like the new cadians that are wearing clothes are better for posability and kitbashing because the designer didn't have to be subservient to muscle action. But even still they are a lot more monopose than the older cadians. If you ever see a victrix model I think they do this kind of monopose way better. You get the benefit of the well modeled movement of cloth and muscles with some amount of modularity because there are options at the wrist joint or flat jointed arm. But overall I agree, it's a lot less fun and I prefer the old models in a lot of cases. But having also built and painted the old lizardmen (seraphon) warriors I think the new ones look way cooler. And they simply couldn't look as cool as they do, getting the accurate neck joint and muscles, if they were as "action-figurey" as the old models. You kinda fucked yourself by clipping off the entire sprue instead of following instructions per body.
>>97311784git gud tranny freak
Months of watching the stalker sperg flip out ITT, todays talk of synthetic vs natural and non-hobby acrylics and me being in wal-mart got me to make this small $15 purchase of supplies to give this craft paint thing a try. This guy has been in my bitz box for I don't know how long and tonight he becomes a lab rat.
>>97311852Holy shit calm down you sperg. It's common knowledge most modern kits are monopose, you should've done your research beforehand. >is this just me getting filteredyes
>>97311852Man, I remember when everything was monopose, and basically all infantry models were one or two pieces of pewter + shield&base. Yet somehow we managed the apparently Herculean task of making conversions out of those.
>>97308312>>97308323I like this idea and want to do something similar for GSCbasically repainted IG surplus.

Should I give the tilt shield a checkered pattern? I feel like it should have a checkered pattern. Also is there any model, doesn’t have to be Warhammer, that has a phoenix sticker/transfer sheet? I was to put a phoenix on it as its knight house’s heraldry uses one.

How long does enamel wash like Tamiya Accent take to dry, so I can try cleaning/wiping the excess off?
>>97312474Varies a lot with how much you slapped on, how deep into crevices and such it went, etc. As a rule of thumb come back tomorrow.
>>97311375Yes its really bad tho its my test model before I do the rest.
>>97311784Seraphon are a pain in the ass to build, I had the same experience
>>97312563unironically a skill issue, I had 0 problems assembling any of the refreshed models
I want to risk priming but it's 40sF and wet where I am and I don't want to risk it
>>97312474Accent is a bit more thinned enamel, more than streaking grime, right? In which case, you DON'T want to wait until tomorrow as other anon says. You want to apply it, wait ~20-30 minutes and then clean/wipe the excess. Once dry, you will be only able to clean it with white spirit.
>>97312627I do have AK odorless enamel thinner, but not sure if that's the same thing as white spirit
>>97312320I've heard good things about the apple barrel, but I also picked up the same 4 colors in this "folk art" brand that's a literal who to me a well.Initial thoughts are that the mediums are both very thick, watering down was needed for that and the paint (surprising no one I'm sure), just about to put a second "primer" coat of black on, had to go help a buddy pull his truck out of the snow so I'm not going to get far with this tonight.
>>97312627>you will be only able to clean it with white spirit.Well, yes. That's the plan. When stuff's half dry instead... I've never even hard of anyone doing it that way, but would the stuff we want to get rid of (a thin layer sitting out on flat surfaces) be what will have more or less dried then and so refuse to just be wiped off without solvent, while the stuff we want to leave on the model (deeper pools in the recesses) are what's still liquid and so can be removed without solvent? Seems a bit backwards all in all.
>>97312690Dunno if it's the same chemical soup exactly (neither enamel thinner nor white spirits are specific chemicals), but for our purposes here it's effectively the same thing.
>>97312627isn't the usual process to put it on, let it mostly dry, and then wipe it off with enamel thinner or lighter fluid?
>>97312690Should be the same thing.>>97312717>>97312777I'm not an expert, but generally speaking, both ways are viable; it mostly depends on the application and what you are using for cleaning. People who cover minis with streaking grime and similar enamels mostly do the apply > wait roughly 20 minutes > cleanup with a makeup sponge or something. I sometimes do that myself, because for smaller minis, it's a lot faster than doing targeted pin wash like with a vehicle or something. For example, here >>97307876 I did an overall oil wash with warmer brown oil wash (for all intents and purposes, the same thing as your Accent enamels), waited about fifteen minutes, wiped most of it with a makeup sponge, then let it sit for about an hour, and finally fluffed it around the darker spots/shadows.In my experience, this is faster and simpler than waiting for it to dry and then fighting with it with a solvent. BUT, if you are doing something large, like a vehicle, and you are doing a targeted pin wash, I would say waiting until it's somewhat dry might be a better approach. But I still wouldn't wait an entire day; a few hours at most. Alternatively, you can take a blow dryer and make it dry to the touch fast. You can experiment on a piece of plasticard, too.
>>97312820>wiped most of it with a makeup sponge, then let it sit for about an hour, and finally fluffed it around the darker spots/shadows.Well, if you're doing a two-step cleanup I guess doing the first one a bit earlier is reasonable. Though I think we should be careful about wash vs streaking&grime here (and filters for that matter). While they can at times be combined into one step they're really different things, calling for more or less different approaches.
>>97312609Wow thanks for telling me how shit I am. Great contribution to the thread. I bow to a chad like you.
>>97311852Your fault for not reading instructions and clipping everything off like a retard.
>>97312950Anon these models are really easy to assemble, unless they were your first I really dont know what to tell you
>>97312820there's no way you're completely removing the enamel without using solvent though. like if you were panel lining a white gundam and just wiped it off after 20 minutes it wouldn't be white anymore.
Took another break for the holidays. Finally got around to finishing my daemonsmith, though.Had to repaint the flames like 3 times to finally get them to look halfway decent.
>>97312694Okay wow, the ale barrel paints are absolute garbage, I don't think I even want them for terrain they're so shit. The folk art ones though aren't bad, so I'm going forward with them.As for the big bottles the black is beautiful, good coverage and a nice satin/gloss finish, the white on the other hand is almost chunky and smells like a bucket of house paint.
>>97313020With gloss varnish and not waiting until it's dry, I would say 99% of the enamel is gone with you swipe it with the makeup sponge. Might be different on white, but so far I've used this technique on green, gray, and red, and it never really left any coloration.
>>97311980>and tonight he becomes a lab rat.He isn't primed and primer takes a day to cure. I am concerned.
>>97313124I used that black paint as a "primer".Also I only just started utting on some red and some brown and I'm done for tonight, got food and vidya to attend to.
>>97313135I don't like how you put primer in quotes like primer isn't real.
>>97313149Well a big bottle of acrylic black isn't primer, so in my case it isn't real.Anyway, ribs are on the go so I'm out.
>>97311852>WHY DOES ANYONE ASSEMBLE AND PAINT THESEThere's no point getting mad at it. I don't know why anyone plays or paints GW stuff. There are many many space marines in these threads, so people obviously like it. I'll never understand, but also there's loads of good miniature companies out there so I don't need to understand. I can just buy their stuff instead. Northstar minis are my jam. Everything I want in a kit.

how do I upgrade my metallic painting game? I usually just do a metallic paint then a wash and call it done. I rarely paint highlights on metal. SOmetimes I paint it black or brown or verdigris then drybrush it. Looking for any suggestions.
>>97313106i think that looks amazing, anon, the repaints on the flames took a long ass time i'm sure but the end result is really pleasant!
>>97314058use better metallic paint
>>97314129I'm already using Vallejo metal color and TTC
>>97314058
>>97314058i'm pretty lazy with metallics myself, but one thing you can do is edge highlight the sharp edge of the blade with a bright silver or lighter metallic colori would also maybe add some shading on the part of the blade where it connects to the square heft of the axe, just to give it a bit more distinction
>>97314058I don't think highlighting alone will significantly improve the end result. Metallics benefit a lot from weathering, so I'd look into that.
>>97314148yeah that's why I said to use better metallic paint>>97314166>anti-nmm tutorial>but it still follows nmm principlesuh oh the clowns have arrived

>>97308344Looks good, grass is fine
>>97314058This anon >>97314601 is pretty much right. You can either make your mettalics look better with weathering or you can put more effort into shading and highlighting them. I often take a picture of my mini after basecoating metallics with light coming from the angle I want and use that as reference.
>>97314058I recently accidentally discovered just how much of a difference a coloured undercoat makes for metallics. Try painting different colours before the metallics, it works kinda like a colourshift after only 1 metallic layer, and still makes a noticeable difference after 2 layers.
>>97313868Super cool stuff. would ride boat down the river/10I couldn't seem to get dirty down moss to "work" at all though? With their other paints I've found I really need to shake them like crazy, and getting them a bit warm by keeping them in my pocket for a bit.>>97313858Neat! What's on the shoulder pad?>>97313725I like this, but can't help but feel the gold + skin tone + red gems are all competing for my attention and kinda preventing me from seeing the details? >>97313575b8... but priming IS a meme. i use random inks or craft paints to prime all the time and my minis look fine and dont chip.
>>97315078go completely crazy and do a NMM undercoat and then put a metallic all over it
>>97313575>I aint had a problemoh, you have at least one, totally unrelated to painting tho
Got most of the Starweaver done, just the pilot's head and gun to do now. Annoyingly made a flame stencil with masking tape and even after making it less tacky, a bit of glue remained on the model afterwards which has left a small amount of texture by the flames.
>>97315871I would've thought you could freehand a simple design like that
>>97315878I probably should have but I wanted a neat flat coat from the spray. Live and learn.
>>97315871can you just rub it off?
>>97315910Tried but didn't want to go too hard and remove underlying paint. It looks less bad now it's been touched up and varnished at least.
>>97315871I really like your scheme anon, that color transition is lovely
>>97313858Always love to see the guard.
>>97315871Very clean, looks great
How should I go about painting the Jazz pattern on something? Stipple like crazy? Use a sponge?I specifically want to reproduce that crayon texture
i'll paint more imperialis in the near future, the knights are FUN sized
>>97316306a sponge would probably work best if it's for a large part of a model, otherwise the best way to do it would be stippling i imagine, yeah
>>97316327It'll be on a van for Gaslands so it'll be a decently large surface to work with. Time to go to walmart for some cheap foam brushes
>>97315639I did have to shake the bottle like crazy, and I also cupped in my hand so it heated up a bit. Basically shake until you hear that roller ball really clack. Also I did thin passes with a very slightly damp brush. The double passes didn't turn out as well
Question to anyone who worked with polystyrene before - any way to deal with that electrostatic dust that is produced along sawing/sanding of this stuff? I absolutely hate how hard it is to clean it, as it tend to stick to fingers or tools.
>>97316523No, but replace the saw with a hot wire polystyrene cutter and you'll at least have a lot less of it.
Slowly working on some possessed.
>>97307789I recently got back into mini painting after like 10 years. Got a bunch of Skaven on the cheap from a friend and I’ve been trying to get back into the swing of things. Here’s my Rat Ogre I’m working on.
Chubbster just needs to be based and hes tabletop ready
>>97317093The weathering on the pauldrons look great! How’d you do it?
>>97317136Base coat with speedpaint broadsword silver wash with rust tone washstipple waterd down skrag brown into and around pits and crevassesApply pigments with water into the skrag brown parts
>>97314622thanks anon, im not too sure still, I think the red blades of grass annoy me
>>97317367I felt the urge to do this.
>>97317523This one doesn't have the same punch, but I still got a chuckle out of it.
>>97317367the flowers are so cuteowo
>>97317796I think I figured out the freehand on the predator, thoughts?
I've been trying out glazing medium, but I think I'm doing something wrong. The problem is that the paint ends up really streaky with more medium, am I also supposed to add extra water? It just seems to be hard to even get the paint off the brush with extra medium.
>>97317844looks good
>>97316073>>97316283Cheers guys! Not too much more progress, but got the canopy and underslung gun done, plus the base weapon platform. Not too much left in the project now, just 3 arms, platform weapon, some kind of gem thing for the top of the starweaver since a gun there looks bad and maybe a couple of extra models.
>>97307789Does anyone got stahly's latest comparison tool with the new vallejo metallics?
please. I beg of you all. Stop using paint comparison charts.
>>97317779>>97317523I realise now that that particular head guaranteed was for someone resting their cheek on the crossbow and aiming with one eye and not just shouting.
>>97318195Yes, use Stahly's swatch, since that is the only relevant one. >>97318135I'm not 100% certain, but I think he's selling it extra. I only have access to the 7-in-1 tool. t. leaker anon
>>97318232>I'm not 100% certain, but I think he's selling it extra. I only have access to the 7-in-1 tool.Thank you for checking anyway anon
I didn't realize that people would actually pay money for paint reference charts and it would fund essentially just having all of the paints. I know what my next hustle is gonna be.
>>97318421You already tried this bait before, retard-kun.
>>97318421When you have like 10 different brands of hobby paints such a tool is pretty convenient
