This is a general for OSR, seperate from /osrg/, where you CAN talk about AD&D 2e, retroclones & other general OSR. This general exists (and is seperate from /osrg/) due to trolling on /osrg/ making discussion impossible.

Thread Question: Favorite type of Fiend?
>>
I think I like Hezrou as my favorite fiends.
Big stinky frogs that hit like trucks. I think most people coming in from newer editions just aren't ready for demons that are actually scary, and something about Hezrous helps wake them up pretty quickly.

Succ.
They suck in every game though.
Hate using them, hate seeing them, still my favorite though.

In a game almost a decade ago, some completely random succubus just appeared out of nowhere in the middle of this big battle and started energy draining our mage, and everything went to shit after that for the whole rest of the adventure because he became useless.
>>
>>97320064
Hezrou need something to make them more special. I always confuse them with Slaads.
>>
>>97320150
More detail required, like why did the DM do that and why did all of you keep playing?
>>
I'm happy Stranger Things is done.

My DM expected everyone to watch it and would drop references to the show during games like they were some kind of reward.

for what fucking purpose?
>>
>>97320212
It was a battle against some cultists in an underground temple, and we had gone in from some side way we thought was secret. We start fighting, advancing away from that side entrance with the mage way behind, and then a succubus just comes in from behind the mage and hits him with charm.

We all fucked up. We should have immediately turned back to rescue the mage, but we were still fighting the cultists, and the succ got four levels off him with kiss suggestions before we could kill her.

We didn't really understand how bad things were until the mage player explained what his character had lost and how the succ had basically killed him.

Not really our style, but still pretty interesting and changed things up a few notches.

Tried running them through The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan, and we only got through a few rooms and they had a negative score (i didn't tell them that yet), but they wanted to continue.

>Thread Question: Favorite type of Fiend?
Remember the old days when there were two types of fiend: Pit fiends and Asmodeus? In 2e there may be just one type because Asmodeus was no longer called a fiend. All the rest were called devils or demons.

Until Planescape.

Calling the evil outer planar/lower planes monsters collectively fiends is very Planescape. I didn't much like Planescape. I've heard tales of people whose motivation was
>Let's play Planescape and take on the Lady of Pain
I hope those are fake. You do have to make a campaign your own which you can't do by following the setting book to the letter but that idea is possibly even worse than the Darksun's early metaplot.

Anyone know of earlier references to "fiendish planes" than Planescape so I can shake my fist at more and older clouds?

I remember a whole folio of fiends.
>>
>>97320667
>I hope those are fake.
They kind of have to be, since the Lady of Pain is not statted like killable gods.

>I didn't much like Planescape
I have a hard time figuring out my own feelings for it.

Planescape lore is something I dove headfirst into before I really had the ability to differentiate what good/bad lore even was, and with how the different D&D settings blurred in and out of it, it's sometimes really tricky to figure out where the good or bad ideas even originated from, making it that much harder to assess Planescape by itself.

I think I hate Sigil. But, I love the planes, and Planescape really helped expand their lore dramatically and predominantly in ways I agreed with.

>>97320673
I had a quick look before I posted but I didn't see it. Because you suggested I had a longer look. The only fiend I found was a note to look in Fiend Folio. The Nine Hells inhabitants are "devilish" and "devilkind", and Abyss beings are "demonic". There may be more fiends out there, but it'll have to be found by someone other than me running their finger along a piece of paper and having to turn pages.

Did have fun rediscovering the controversial line I had forgotten for at least six months
>As Takhisis in the world of Kyrnn, Tiamat has never let her followers know that there are other arch-devils or that there is a Nine Hells at all.
I still like my Takhisis to be separate from my Tiamat even if one is obviously just a reskin.

Cool news from Autarch, Anons! Can't wait to pirate it when it comes out.

Blog post: https://arbiterofworlds.substack.com/p/announcing-annals-of-the-auran-empire

Backerkit link:
https://www.backerkit.com/call_to_action/8b8be898-82a5-4dc9-868d-aa9a9b449f6e/landing

Here's the blurb from the blog:

> Announcing Annals of the Auran Empire

>I hope that everyone had a splendid New Year's Day and is looking forward to a prosperous 2026. Here at Autarch, it's only been a week, and it feels like a month has already passed.

> Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Auran Empire The Auran Empire is best known as the default setting of ACKS and ACKS II, but it’s more than that - it’s my own personal campaign setting, one that I’ve used to run BX, D&D 3.5E, and even RuneQuest, in campaigns that long predate ACKS.

>As it happens, today marks the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Auran Empire, with my earliest files dating to January 6, 2006! To celebrate this milestone, I’m delighted to announce a major new project: Annals of the Auran Empire!

>Autarch’s new anthology Annals of the Auran Empire brings together an extraordinary roster of fantasy authors to explore the Auran Empire’s dangers, dungeons, and doomed champions.

>Leading the anthology is Nebula Award finalist John C. Wright, whose tale “Shadowblade” unfolds in the kingdom of Rorn during the dark days following the death of Arëtar Pendaelen. More authors will be revealed in the weeks ahead.

>Crowdfunding launches Spring 2026. Follow now to be first in line and unlock an exclusive preview of Chapter 1 of Wright’s story before anyone else.

>They kind of have to be
I hope you're right but I've heard a few podcasts by people who are very narrativist-heavy playing 5e and have been into the modern version of planescape. I know nothing about 5e Planescape, not even if there has been a release for it, but I'm sure a little fact like her supposed to be an unstatted inscrutable mystery will not stop these people out there statting and scrutinizing her.

As much as I din't really like Planescape I kind of liked Sigil itself as a big city. I didn't like the ease with which it could slide into a Sliders like location of the week affair. It was up to the DM whether or not you could get a key but unless you're going to be using Sigil for its ease of access to new locations then I reckon you had to be doing some politicking with the factions.

Agree with you about expanding the planes. What as it you particularly liked if it's anything you can figure out? Was it the factions? Details of cultures and realms to be found in the planes?

I'm not too much into Planescape. I think there's too many planes in it. I much prefer the more minimalist approach of ACKS when it comes to planes: Celestial, Elemental, Chthonic, Empyrean, and Outer Darkness. That's more than enough for any campaign.

>That was like a Gordian Knot moment.
You know that story?

The cutting of the Gordian Knot is an Ancient Greek legend associated with Alexander the Great in Gordium in Phrygia, regarding a complex knot that tied an oxcart. Reputedly, whoever could untie it would be destined to rule all of Asia. In 333 BC, Alexander was challenged to untie the knot. Instead of untangling it laboriously as everyone expected, he dramatically cut through it with his sword. This is used as a metaphor for inventing an unexpected method to solve a seemingly intractable problem.

It's great that after the Alexander the Great of antiquity we now have a new Alexander the Great of modernity.

>>
It's a good thing that the easiest way to show people how shit ACKS is just to show them the actual rules.
It's very much the poster child of "Just because a system has rules for something doesn't mean they're going to be good rules."
>>
>>97321982
That's what got them banned from Reddit, 100%.

The ACKS discord would say how great the game is, then post pages thinking they were showing it off, and the resounding response was "That's it?"
It was from that seed of doubt that everything else started to unravel, because when the praise for a game and the actual quality are so disparate, even the people of Reddit had to start to wonder if shilling was going on.

The irony is that if the game had been any good, no one would have thought any brigading was going on at all; but if it had been any good, they wouldn't have had to brigade.

The Toad Prince from the Witcher 3 fits that, since the Witcher setting is one of those odd ones where the line between what people understand to just be fairy tails and what's real are blurred in really cynical fashions.

I think a whole bunch of peasant women seeking a prince descending down into the sewers only to be devoured by a giant frog, who is in fact actually a cursed prince, is about as cynical as things get.

The Witcher games are some solid resources for inspiration. You shouldn't grab anything 1:1 from them, but there's enough that can serve as some pretty good inspiration.

I replayed some of the DLC a few weeks ago, and filled up half a notebook with interesting ideas that'd work well in my games, most centered around the "Impossible Wish/Deals with the Devil" business that was going on.

I have a nice big dungeon stocked full of people who made really bad wishes.

>The only way to fix the trolling on /osrg/ is to return to it.
No, that's been tried, and it really doesn't fix anything. I think drawing attention to just how psychotic the trolls are is actually helping things out, and judging by how most people seem to have gotten the warning that the /osrg/ is nothing but troll bumps, this thread is doing its job. Hell, the trolls constantly trying to flood it to show how upset they are only adds to that.

The core of the problem is really just a few bad actors, with insane amounts of free time and neurosis. The moderation regarding them really can't continue like this forever, so as long as people just continue to discuss OSR games in these new OSR generals, things will eventually heal. There's also been decent discussion in these threads once you learn the easy trick of ignoring the trolls.

Remember: if this has gotten the trolls this furious, that means they're getting desperate. You don't spend ten hours screaming in frustration if everything is going as you planned.

Throwing echo chamber posts between themselves really seems to make them desperate.

>>97323214
/tg/ never raided. Old /tg/ didn't even have to, because it just had such a good defense against trolls/etc, something built from it starting out with enduring nearly constant raids from /b/. Now, /tg/ is too small and more importantly too divided.
>>
>>97323323
Irinically, I think what drove most people away from the /osrg/ wasn't the trolls acting like trolls, it was the trolls trying to act like anyone would care about anything they wanted to say.
They have a way of draining all the life out of a game, and a discussion. And that's them trying their hardest to be interesting.
It must be awful, being that bland.

>>

Right. That's entering paranoid schizophrenia territory, though.
>>
>>97323765
I thought it was firmly established that the 200 page thing was written just because that's what BrOSR losers do anyway?
https://bdubsanddragons.blogspot.com/2025/07/braunstein-is-talk-of-town-bromerican.html
They just write these things out because they're always struggling to figure out how to make their games the most boring things ever and what could be more boring than a heaping slab of text no one would ever want to read.

BrOSR losers encourage each other to write up their campaigns, probably because their games feel empty and maybe sharing them can help each other feel like they're not the worst people playing the worst games somehow.

It's not that they're trying to ruin things, it's just everything they try to do is bogged down by ineptitude.

The BrOSR don't encourage write-ups for the same reason you or I might. Y'know, tell a good story, spark some joy or what not. They do it because they need receipts. Receipts of games is like any other sort of strict record keeping for them; without them the game can't have meaning to them.

It's a bit like Russian Roulette. The game itself (minus the blowing your brains out) is actually pretty simple and even a bit boring, so they really have to raise the stakes in order for people to care about it. With BrOSR, they run bad games in dumb ways, so they need to try and employ every trick and technique they can to "raise the stakes" and pretend the game has some sort of meaning, when the unfortunate truth is that no game that these people would play would ever have a shred of point or purpose because the people themselves are pretty much just shit.

What's even more fascinating is that regardless of what game system they are playing, and no matter how bad their games seem to be from the outside, they are still able to have fun and type up full reports.
Meanwhile, the single person here trying to beg for 2e, has admitted to only ever having played one single session, and has posted some embarrassingly fake character sheets.
Really, regardless of personal taste, you have to admit that one side is at least more throw and dedicated, whereas the other party is basically completely disengaged from the hobby entirely.

Gemini's pretty good at identifying individual items and removing or swapping them. You can e.g. take an image of an elf with a sword, ask it to swap the sword with a mace, and 70-80% of the time it gets it reasonably well on the first attempt.

Session #~130
While enjoying a christmas party at the keep, the window blows open with a flurry of snow, bringing with it an elf owl carrying a package as big as its body, collapsing to the table in exhaustion. Within the festively wrapped package was a snowglobe, and on the reverse of the wrapping paper, a letter (that had to be pieced together as the frenchman had torn the paper apart opening it). The letter was from a “Mayor Winklebottom Jr IV”, from the distant arctic land of Hypergnomea. It described that his remote mountain village was under mysterious attack and cut off from aid. Knowing the party as the heroes who has saved multiple countries in peril (including his own), he implores the Heroes of Lannes Keep to prepare themselves for danger, then smash the snowglobe at their feet. Once they did, the globe exploded into a blizzard, and the party felt themselves yanked out of the window as they flew as a snow cloud, crossing thousands of miles nearly instantly, recorporealizing at the edge of a snowy alpine forest, a prosperous looking tourism town visible far off downhill, and beyond that, a looming mountain dotted in massive evergreens, the thin peak of which droops over to the side, nearly curling on itself. The stink was incredible from the air blowing off them mountain, like living near a landfill.
Travelling through the forest on foot, nearly halfway to town, following a sleigh path through the dense woods, the party sees a carriage shelter, and beneath it, an old man on a bench, wearing a dirty red cloak over plate armor and with a similar large red sack beside him. His hood was up but it was apaprent one eye was badly swollen and crusted shut and his skin sallow. The party hailed him, and he explained he was leaving town, but was resting briefly. Somehow, he smelled even worse than the air, like the sickly sweet of rot. The party offered him aid which he denied. Disturbed but cautious, the party decided to give him (cont)

to give him a slight berth as they proceeded, when he suddenly stood and declared “There *is* something you can do for me, die!”, just as his head threw back, and his swollen eye burst open, emerging from the socket, a swaying red-speckled albino demon-centipede, puppeting the old mans body! The party moved into position, but the puppeted warrior tossed the red sack behind their line, and from it came six more centipedes. Over the course of combat, the puppet-man-thing attacked with its acidic centipede bite, aided by its troglodyte-like stench. The centipedes used their bites to latch and and begin attempting to burrow into the PC’s guts to puppet them too. Fortunately, the brave party prevailed, recovered some health, and pressed on. Already suggested in and about the other osrg thread. I don't like C&C itself but it was at the forefront of OSR. If you want to exclude things go ahead and make a proper-subset-of-osr aka /posr/ thread but anything claiming to be /osrg/ needs to be about osr not a limited range of osr games. C&C doesn't get much love on 4chan. I mean, who wouldn't? Getting like that is the best. Particularly when it's Alexander "The Great" Macris, the author of ACKS, now on sale on DTRPG.

You know why we call him Alexander "The Great" Macris, right?

Let me guess... because of his SIZE? The size of Alexander "The Great" Macris? The author of By This Axe, on sale on DTRPG?

You guessed right! Alexander "The Great" Macris, author of the ACKS treasure tome, on sale now on DTRPG, is... shall we say "well endowed"?

i like the MW and TWM tables

Now I'm picturing what Alexander "The Great" Macris is doing to his slaves while he types the ACKS Judges Journal, now on sale on DTRPG. Did you know he owns slaves? Which is why he got banned from reddit. But he has rectal congress with them, which is basically payment, so he's a good slave owner.

Technically speaking bfrp magic items don't fit on one page, you're excluding a bunch of other types of magic items, but yeah weapons and armor all fit on one page with room to spare

>My, how festive
Oh yes it's meant to be a Christmas holiday module, but the festive whimsical stuff hasn't come up yet, this first encounter was a bit of body horror to provide some contrast to the colorful whimsy that comes later
>>
>>97325771
Replying to myself, that was only half of the session report, I'm doing chores and cooking so I will try to type out the rest tonight
>>
>>97325771
>some contrast
Kinda underselling it.
>>
>>97325837
In my own defense, I was going for something very gruesome and horrifying, because what would later come is that in order to not be debilitated by the stench from the mountain, that the characters all end up taking a psychedelic potion that transforms everything into a cutesy cartoony Rankin bass Christmas special, with even the horrifying monsters appearing adorable and friendly (they are not).

So yeah I wanted something particularly gruesome without being a magical realm insert, so that when I describe that they are being attacked by giant ice cream cone wearing peppermint bark armor, and wielding a candy cane scythe, it doesn't seem out of place (really I'm just trying to contextualize and ground the silliness that is happening. Also I apologize if I'm taking your commentary too seriously)
>>
>>97325771
You missed the opportunity for the centipedes to have red stripes rather than speckles, and curl up into a J shape when they died.
>>
>>97325909
Shit, you're really right.
Maybe next time I run this I will change it to that.

The reason they look like this was because originally they were supposed to be hiding in the snow, black and white, but I thought it would be cooler if he threw a bag full of them, but then them being camouflaged didn't make sense so I thought it would be more interesting if they look like blood splatter on snow.

Maybe that's exactly what will happen when they encounter the centipedes under the effect of the psychedelic gnomebrew ;)
>>
>>97325909
That's kinda putting a hat on a hat.

Cacodemon is the catch all term Acks uses for devils, demons, and malicious outsiders/extraplanar beings. Some are built out like the Baleygr(balrog/balor) but most aren't. Are you planning on using it or did you just want to see the titty art?
>>
>>97324628
It's good to remember that this is the stuff they think is good. As in, the is the cream of their crop, and it gets a shit ton worse than even this slop they're dropping.

The economy rules in particular are almost painful to look through, because there's so many obvious ways to make things easier or better, and the dumbfuck instead would make things slower and more complicated. It's the game design equivalent of watching someone endlessly miss a putt and somehow get further and further from the hole every time.
>>
If you were joining a game and the GM said

>We are using every first party book, 1e included. Please write a list of what optional rules you do and don't want to use.

what would your lists be?
What ones are definitely use, which are definitely dont? Every else is assume you dont care either way.

Asking here since this thread covers 2e and I think that's where I saw it, but I'm looking for a piece of art where it's an old wizard dude using magic to quickly clean up his place while a woman (also old) is walking towards his front door. I can't remember if it was colorized even. Anyone know the piece I'm thinking of? I swear it was in one of the AD&D 2e books but I can't seem to find it in my copies.

List two, and describe how they would make it objectively better

In my lotfp game I had some skeletons that were resistant to non-bludgeoning damage, and one of the players correctly pointed out that the back end of his handaxe could be used as a hammer, but I told him it wasn't designed for that and gave him a -2 to hit and damage, but upon reflection I think I may have fucked up and been too heavy-handed.
Should I just have rewarded his characters resourcefulness and the players reasoning??
>>
>>97329627
yes, you were wrong
>>
>>97329723
Instead of such a banal inane reply, could you try to say something of substance?
Explain how or why he was wrong?

>>97329627
Two things come to mind in this situation:
1. A hand ax is not the same as a hatchet,
2. The hammer side of a hatchet is not designed to be swung in the same way with the same Force as the blade, the weight distribution is different, and the handle itself is ergonomically shaped to be swung the other way.

That being said I would have allowed it, but just -1 to hit (maybe damage if I was feeling frisky). Lotfp is already punishing enough in regards to combat.
>>
>>97329779
mace
>a metal weight on a stick
axe
>a metal weight with a blade on a stick
pimple as, anon was wrong
yeah a mace would probably be more consistent in transferring the energy of a blow since you can fuck up edge alignment with an axe
but the player had a solution for it anyway

>muh ergonomics
anon ergonomics of a real-life medieval shafted weapon is just a hefty stick
>>
Nah, due to your flippant attitude I have decided to double down on the player.
>>
>>97329627
Either a -1 to hit or -1 to damage would have been sufficient, your reasoning and the player's reasoning is fine. Maybe the player oughta pack a fucking mace next time.

Did the skeletons take half damage from bladed weapons or were they virtually unaffected?
>>
>>97330882
Half damage, yeah.
I was borrowing a bit from 3.5 and having the skeletons take half damage from blades and zombies take half damage from bludgeons.
The zombies they were all equipped to deal with, but basically nobody except the cleric brought a club
