>>97445262Very good, OP! I was stuck heads-down at work this morning.I swear, if I don't paint something this week, maybe I can get some assembling done.
final 3 members of the Amazon team painted. After the bases dry i’ll glue some grass on them, and i’ll paint the balls and coins after work.
Gorath is all done. It was my first time doing a few things: black armor, a glass bottle, and horns. I could have made the stone tiles on the base a bit more interesting, but it's fine. I think my biggest failing was on the mace and I just sort of gave up on it at a certain point. I need to improve my metallic work.
Texturing some cloth
>>97445815that's too good a paintjob to leave those moldines
Honestly, second attempt at making head went odd - it's still too wide and long, like first attempt (on the left). I'm not sure if to try third time or just vice up and use some pre-made one. What's your opinion?
Finished my kit bashed penal legionnaire. It was a change nice change of pace to paint some ’umies after all the ork boys.
>>97445922Obligatory booty shot.
>>97445922>>97445928nice job, i think some higher contrast/deeper shadows could really make it pop
>>97445922he could penal me iykwim good, very clean very poppy.>>97445897I think the head you did looks cute! I like the one on the right and the one on the left looks fine too but unfinished? what's wrong with them??>>97445343they have balls? idk if it's just the picture or what but they're really desaturated looking? metal and skin seems to be the same colour but just metallic/non metallic>>97445737Bottle looks great, cape looks boring, horns look boring. needs more poppy? like it's not bad at all but my general sentiment is just "that's neat"
>>97445990>skin recipe?I wasn't really keeping track exactly but it's along the lines of >purple, green, magenta underpainting>burnt orange/dark red beige and pale pink mid and highlights layered over it.There are some various mixes of magenta washes in between some layers and over-top to redden the skin when necessary. I recommend looking up 2d skin tone rendering tutorials. They're usually a bit more straightforward than mini painting ones. I'm no expert but they've really upped my skin painting I think.
>>97446154I could probably make the gold more different by glazing some yellow on it but I need to be finished with the project because I have a competition piece to paint next month. The team also isn’t for me and the recipient says he’s good with them as is.
Kitbashing some Dark Angels, probably going to use them as proxy Nemesis Claw in KT. Any advice on how to work with green stuff for their cloaks and robes? Its a bit infuriating. Hopefully they don't look like chewed up bubble gum once painted
>>97446328use tools coated in petroleum jelly or oilonce cured you can sand it or use a knife to shape it furtherfor complex sculpts, it can be really helpful to do it in stages - block out a rough shape, then carve away as needed once cured, then add another layer with details
>>97446154Have a feeling that these heads are simply too "heavy" looking for what will be melee oriented mecha with jumpjets on his back.
>>97445897first I think you should rotate the shoulder armor so it matches the leg armor. second I think you should make the head look like a samurai helmet to match the other armor pieces you added.
>>97446328After you flatten down the putty, let it rest and partially cure before you start wrapping it around the model. It will keep the shape better and not crumble and stick into a blobby mess like on that plasma gunner.
>>97446328for cloth roll it out very thin, then wait 30 mins, only then attach and shape it, that looks terrible but luckily will come off very easyly Watch a yt tutorial on GS capes or cloths, they are many and they are good
>>97446640To be clearer, roll out a sheet and cut your cloth from it when cured for about 1/2 hr
>>97446328this should be obvious but apparently it isn't because I see it on the majority of sculpts people post:don't use your bare hands because it will put fingerprints on everything
>>97445278How does it look, Santa? Everyone got their gift?
>>97446154I'm not great with capes yet. The bottle is a bit sloppier than I would have wanted but it's alright for my first attempt. The horns I could have tried doing striations but I figured it was good enough for how long I spent on this guy.
In honour of the Corsair comeback I finally built these Corsair jetbikes.Cape is from harlequins kit and the weapons in their hands are from the void scarred KT kit. Corsair Jetbike upgrade sprue was from China. Terrible picture but they are done!My god these were a pain to build.
>>97446775Ignore that anon; the cape is really good. Great contrast and 3D-ness. Not sure if the guy is as vampire or not but the cape gives me the vibe of free flowing blood.
Working on some Underdark mushrooms. Thinking Im going to paint the ball mushrooms like bright blue and violet but I have no idea what color scheme to give the 'brain' mushroom in the center.

>>97447458
>>97447361Marvelous, I wish to sometime in the future reach your level of skill. What's your gold recipe?
>>97447485Hey thanks! I'm just patient and precise honestly, anyone can reach this level with practice. Anyway that gold is not finished yet, it's just washed for now. What I do is this>retributor armor/ttc dragon's gold basecoat>wash with a 1:1 mix of gore-grunta fur and magos purple with additional passes for deeper shadows and recesses>reapply retributor on upward facing areas>layer liberator gold/ttc glistening gold towards areas that would reflect light by adding it to retributor armor>canoptek alloy edge highlightsI made this image a while back for a different anon that asked me about the gold, should help you visualize the steps.
>>97447546Thanks a lot mate
>>97447467not a bad idea. it looks more like the flames just kept going but i think it looks good1 thanks for the rec. redoing the the fire elemental to match might be to much but oh well. A matt finish on the fire?

>>97447906where are all these cute goblins coming from
>>97448107We just love goblins here. Mostly twin goddess miniatures.
if I use contrast paint over a white decal will that change the decal into the color I want or will that not work
>>97448218Do a test first.
All done, happy with how it turned out. This is my first attempt at painting NMM, though I kept it mostly just volumetric rather than going for some of the extreme stuff I see competition painters doing.
I saw during an oil painting tutorial (recording of irl from 2008, not YouTube slop) where the instructor said he prefers and recommends using a middle value palette instead of a white/black/clear one. The reason being that everything on a white palette looks relatively dark, and everything on a black one looks relatively light, but on a palette with a neutral tone in the middle allow you to see the color relations better on the palette. All this is to say that I think it was a neat idea and I'm going to try using my brown parchment paper this time instead of white. Not sure if it will matter as much since I usually don't put all my colors out ahead of time and just as needed, but I thought it was an interesting concept none the less.
>>97448295and here's the backIs the thing about NMM not looking good on the tabletop a myth? Or does it only apply to the super advanced style with all those secondary reflections and whatever.
>>97448218It should work, the only issue I can think of would be if it maybe has a weird reaction with the decal material and doesn't dry properly
>>97448307no problem if you varnish first anyways>>97448218It'll work the exact same as contrast over any other surface. It'll tint all the colours.
>>97445262Damn that looks cool. You were working on the leg the other night? I've been building the rank and file guys from the Saturnine box.t.purplecron
I think this is a better angle, last pic was kinda blurry
>>97448302You gotta tell us.I personally think high level NMM is striking in general. Yours there is nice and clean and reads like metal, but I think it's partly because we know that's supposed to be metal, your contrast is a little low for me. For that style of clean paint job I would recommend going darker and lighter. Not into secondary reflections territory, just more contrast
>>97446281Wow. That's great with. The freckles rly kick it up a notch.
chorf chorf chorf. miniature itself is done, just have to finish up the base
>>974473613spooky5me

>>97448343I love the poofy pants and sleeves.
>>97448351chuffed with this chorf so far?
>>97448302nmm is a meme. if I look at your miniature I think "ok the sword and the breastplate are supposed to be metal I guess," but you could have achieved the same reaction with metallic paint. even with really well done nmm you will think "wow that looks good" at first glance, but then when you take a closer look you will think "oh it's just painted that way." there's basically no level of effort where nmm will look better than metallic paint.
>>97448312Okay that what I will do then I have a red base> white decal> varnish> tint yellow

painting a space man
I'm working on some extra spiky bits for the tonk, but I'm not quite sure where to put them. Post some cool chaos tanks so I can steal some ideas.
>>97449090Lookin' good, anon. This one's kinda cool. I tried to find a picture of one from a 2000's edition of white dwarf that I remember liking, but I couldn't find a version of the right edition. This one is similar enough and probably way better painted though.
>>97449110Looks neat but I want to avoid putting spikes on top because then the turret can't turn properly. I'm set on the spiky bumper though.
>>97449110>>97449110Although, come to think of it, spikes there would stop the turret from rotating. So maybe not a good idea. On the plus side that does limit your options if you care about that.>>97449078What chapter is this? I accidentally painted a blue and red marine a little while ago and I have no idea what I should call him.---I tried a technique I invented (not really) out on the shirt that I think turned out pretty well.Question for people though, what color does the shirt read as? Not like a trick question for what colors did I use, just if she were real and wearing a shirt, what color is the shirt based on this pic? Also I got the photo angle kinda wrong, but it's fine.Just a quick final session to clean up some little spots I think and I'll call it on her.
>>97449125>what color does the shirt read as?man why do people gaslight themselves with this shit? if you paint something blue it's blue. if you paint something red it's red. it's not a fuckin magic eye picture where it turns into something else if you look at it long enough.
>>97449125blueish grey
>>97449184>he didn't see the pink in the shirt until he read this message
>>97449184Context affects perception.
>>97449125The shirt doesn't look white if that's what you mean. Considering the lighting on her skin, it's too dark to look white.
>>97449324That is what I meant. I'm happy with how it turned out none the less, but I was originally aiming for a blueish-white rather than a medium grey. Staring at it all night makes me a little blind to it so I wanted a second opinion.
>anon mentioned nuln oil getting worse last threadI swear it used to be darker before as well, now it feels like there's barely any pigment. I've had to move to tamiya panel liner because nuln oil just sucks for panel lining now.
>>97449184> fuckin magic eye picture where it turns into something else if you look at it long enoughMetamerism is a thing, but I don't think that's what >>97449125 means here.Colours absolutely read differently depending on the colours that surround them, see pic related. The top and bottom images both have the exact same coloured rectangles, but they read as very different colours and saturations depending on the colours that surround them.Src: Color appearance depends on the variance of surround colors (1997, R.O. Brown, D. I.A. MacLeod)
>>97449090mine doesn't have spikes but I'll post it anyway :^)
>>97449345I've never used the old one and even I am convinced that it used to be better because of how often I've heard people say the new one is bad. When I started painting, I didn't get nuln oil because it was sold out all the time. But now there's always extra stock.

>>97449125Wow, it's been awesome following your progress over the last few threads. Nice work!I would've said the shirt looks white at first, but after looking at it for a while, I think it's grey and might be made of a fabric that's a little bit more reflective than cotton.

Need to paint the lenses, eyes and base these guys. The STL files had tons of extra gun appendages, but in the end I decided not to glue them because they'd clutter the model too much and would also be extremely prone to snapping.

>>97451876>the question was "what colour does this shirt read as?", and not "what colour of paint did I use?"which is a ridiculous question you would only be asking because of insane gaslighting. any normal person would think "I painted it red so it's red" and that would be it. constant second guessing about "but what does it really look like?" is not normal.

Third time is the charm I guess since this time I got, more or less, the shape I wanted. But had to make unusual connection to main head part to do so.Last time one anon suggested to make head more like samurai helmet. While I don't really want to, I thought that maybe some Oni feeling would be better instead so I added some sort of fangs. What do you think? Would you also add some simple single horn on the front as well?
>>97452013Oh, neat. With the fangs, this gives me Eva vibes. Is it for a mecha?
>>97452038Yup, custom made with generous amount of polystyrene and Bandai 1/144 optional/spare parts.

>>97452013looking good, buddy.
>>97451939Normal people don't know visual arts. Stop Dunning Krugering.
>>97449184>>97451939>>97451944Rereading anon's original response to the shirt question, I think I understand anon's position a bit better now.Anon doesn't want an explanation of how colour and impression can be subjective, but rather questions why an artist might want another's opinion on their work rather than trusting that the thing they set out to achieve was what they have achieved, in the end.To anon: Often, when you spend a long time with a piece, you can sometimes change your approach mid-implementation, and often the end result is a little bit different than how you imagined it being when you set out. When that happens, it's interesting to get others' impressions, because that helps you understand if others see the piece in the same way you do, or if you've been looking at it too long and have grown too used to it to notice an obvious flaw. You'll see something similar in digital art as well, where an artist might flip their image on the horizontal axis to get a fresh perspective on it.Think about how you don't really notice small, incremental changes like how a child or a pet grows up, but if you look at a photo from a year ago the difference is stark and obvious. You could say that the anon is gaslighting themselves into thinking that the child or pet hasn't grown at all, but that's obviously false. The truth is that it's hard to notice large differences when paint by adding small, incremental layers of different colours (it's not white, it's pink and blue and white and grey in various percentages), and sometimes it's just helpful to get a second opinion from another observer to make sure that the thing we're seeing is the thing that other people are seeing as well.

>>97453507I feel you man. I kept mine as a memento of my first drilled barrel, and haven't had it happen since. But I told myself that if it were to happen again, I'd try to fix it. Haven't had that happen yet, so >>97453546 's advice is handy for me too, thanks. Yeah, Milliput feels like it should do the job.
>>97453877Learn art basics so you understand what we're talking about, maybe you'll be less frustrated.
>>97445262>seeing my own nightbringer in the OPconan was wrong, this is what's best in lifealso did a thousand son today
>>97453491> What do you mean by paint the metal? It's purely Vallejo Aluminium. Not anon but I guess you could do a bit of NMM if the TMM is not feeling interesting enough. I think it looks alright, and the star of the show is the fur.
>>97453989"art basics" will never make a blue object anything but blue. it might look like some other color under certain circumstances, but it will always be blue.
>>97454048I think I'm gonna switch to this >>97453491 version of pads though.
>>97454074Nice, I like that one, too. The purple goes well with the orange of the pumpkin.
>>97448302I really only do time, but I would say the best way to have nmm work is to have simple, solid colors for the rest of the miniature. Ultra matte as well.If I'm painting some psycho chaos warrior with ultra vibrant gear, hmm doesn't work
Tokens and balls for the Amazon blood bowl team. The bases aren’t dry yet but when they are I can glue on the grass flock and be 100% done with this team and get started on the competition piece i’m doing.
>>97449948Are they really good at fisting or something?
Almost finished Khazad guard. I still have to highlight the mask to draw more attention to it.Idk if I should paint their gloves in the blue as I feel it kind of draws the eyes away from the mask. Maybe a drab leather or just paint them bare skinned?
>>97452977nice cooking good looking. ;3>>97453491I mean like, put shadows on it like a half assed NNM, whenever I paint with metallics I still shade and highlight themthat ghoul looks so cool. awesome work, great pallette >>97454041are those the 999th and 1000th sons? or is one of them the 1001st? they look spiffy>>97454747the crystal skulls are hilarious>>97455618leather or skin seems better to medoes anyone know where to get a silt strider looking mini?
Finished my first mini, my attempt at highlighting kind of fucked it i think, looked better without it.How do you fix fuckups?
>>97455980paint over the spots you messed up?
>>97456105So you shouldn't try to wipe it off or anything?
>>97456139sometimes I'll use a lil bit of 99% isopropyl on a brush to strip a particular spot on a mini, but only if the paint is too thick
>>97455980I wouldn't worry too much about it on your first mini, he looks better than my first! The highlights might look weird to you because you got used to seeing him without them. But when I saw this I thought "wow, anon was brave enough to try highlighting on his first mini, nice" and don't personally think they look bad. It's also great to look back and see your first little mans as he turned out, I wouldn't say he needs fixing.I would also not recommend trying to strip paint with isopropanol on a brush, personally. I've never tried that before, so maybe anon has got something figured out, but I think it'll still need some scrubbing in order to be useful and get through those thick bits. It'll harm the hairs of a non-synthetic brush (don't use a brush you like for this. I assume with the army painter starter kit you only have the one synthetic brush, but it's still not great for it), and then you have to deal with learning stripping in addition to painting your first mini. That's a dragon you can take on when you feel ready for it, and not something you have to learn or apply to every mini.Speaking for myself, I've only done any stripping one like one in twenty.I'd recommend if you want to tone down the highlights because they're too bright to you, thin down the base colour with like 5 drops of water and 1 drop of paint and give it a wash-over. It'll smooth the highlights into the colour that surround them, and they'll stand out less to your eyes.If you thin down your paints more (one drop of water to one drop of paint works pretty well for me for the army painter paints, your mileage may vary), then you can generally keep adding to it as much as you like, and paint over mistakes without causing it to become textures or blobby.
Couldn't sleep so now the battlewagon has a rokkit launcha
Anyone know of any alternate models/kitbashes for eldar warlocks?I want some but I'm not paying that insane box price for 2 dudes. Can 3d print or kitbash, whatever. I just haven't found an actual good alternative.
>>97456506WAAAAGH
>>97452420>Lovely texturing, great colours! always wonderful to see your work>>97451736>Just lovely, feels so real!>>97449592Thanks anons. No new pic this time but I did go in and finish and clean up a few tiny little things, and I ordered some stuff to make a basic plinth since I need her to stand up on her own anyway, and she should get a little spot since she's probably the best paintjob I've done so far.2026 goal was to finish 1 project a month, so that's the first one down.I think it was a good move to make a point of going into this with the pretext of it being a practice model, and to move pretty quickly with her. Took the pressure off and allowed me to focus on the bigger shapes that make up like 80% of how a model ends up looking and not spending 5x longer fussing about that last 20% before even being that good at that first 80%.There will be a time for models where I spend 50 hours perfectly blending every detail with a magnifying glass, but that's not a good use of practice time.
>>97456506I love that, what scale is the tank you've grafted onto it? fucking awesome all round
>>97456504>It's also great to look back and see your first little mans as he turned out, I wouldn't say he needs fixing.True, i might try your suggestion for the wash on the blue bits because they're the most egregious and then leave him as is even if he's still a bit sloppy in places, thanks for the in-depth reply. Now to decide on a 40k army to start.
>>97449078space man now with more paint
Wondering if I should push the inks further and more vibrant, since they are going to get a black oil wash and then silver drybrushing.
>>97456891You're welcome dude. Congrats on your first mini, always great to have more folks painting.I'm in the same boat with Warhammer, haha. I'm going to do Dark Heresy rather than 40k, though. I like the aesthetic better and the Saturnine box is super flexible, you can fix them up as any of the Traitor or Loyalist legions.I do have some 40k nids though, love those little buggos.
>>97456932Woops, meant Horus Heresy*, not Dark Heresy.
Anyone have any good face painting/skin guides?
>>97456512Rafail or Riverside comes to mindI'm quite fond of Red Nebular's space elves, but their warlocks are very different.
>>97456506fucking great, needs more duct tape
i know im not really welcome here but im painting some trenchesevery segment has these 2 light bulbs and i dont know what color to make them, was thinking yellow lights but green could be cool too
>>97457124Why would you say that, any wip belongs here. We even get scale models sometimes and I dont think anyone aside from one bored shitposter minds.
>>97457142That's right, since last month I'm posting Gunpla scratchbuild custom model and nobody complained. WIP is WIP.
>>97457124I don't see any lightbulbs and I don't like your attitude. You better be more assertive and more of a problem next time you post, or I'll get out the belt. >>97456908yes>>97456901why is the chest dongle and the knee both red? this colour scheme is weird. why is the thing on the shoulder a flat gray? why isn't the lil thing around the lense on the... shoulder scope? not gunmetal? so many colours look like they're on the wrong spots??? I don't understand space mans. I see this all the time on them and it never makes sense to me?????>>97456644>lots of words>no picturethat's nice anon, or sorry. If you don't post a picture I'm not reading that. >>97456506love thisminor progress? I'm pretty happy with these ones. I like the backpack and junk on this d00d a lot
this one is GLOPPIN'
>>97457124rare terrain posters are very welcomehere is my current wip for testing different things
>>97457590This reminds me of the little dude from Mad God.
>>97457711junk build gang gang! >>97457739thanks! I'm going for something kinda like that with the amount of weathering, but really trying to have poppy bright colours that are reminiscent of Wizards / Heavy Metal / other oldschool acid fantasy animations. As other anon correctly guessed earlier (gives big warm fuzzy)have you seen Junk Head? it's like a weird Japanese action MAD GOD but there's dialogue. I didn't have subtitles on for most of the movie cause I thought it was just meant to be like that. Not sure if that would've enhanced the experience.
I swear this isn't cum.
>>97457817is that the sponge pensioners use to make flower arrangements from
>>97457124You're painting game pieces, that's what the general exists for.
>>97457259Well now that you say it's not for a game and it's just gunpla then yeah, here's a complaint. But are you just going to keep posting it here anyway?
>>97457828I'm not sure cum can replace PVA, anon.
