Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help: >n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0 >Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128 >Need a starter dungeon? I also aksed elsewhere because I am utterly confused by what the fuck is going on with OSR▶Do you guys ever houserule the two-handed axe damage in BXI think that it should remain like that due to the Dwarf (the Dwarf should not access d10 damage, regardless of anyone's opinion on 2H weapons) but I keep reading and meeting people that want it to be d10
>>97504960I don't understand why, of all things, he made ruining these threads his obsession, going as far as to try and force pointless conflict. Dude can't even make a good sheet, I doubt he even plays anything.
>>97505075Nah, I'm basically fine with it, and given the Dwarf's many advantages over the straight Fighter I think your reasoning is totally fair. It's not like people will completely stop playing the god-tier-saves version of the Fighter due to a one point lower average damage output.>>97505083No, I don't get it either, and I said as much in his last fake thread. He stopped hassling /3eg/ almost immediately when it became clear he failed at his weird merge attempt there, but here he's fucking obsessed with trying to force a 2e merge for some baroque reason.
>>97505075yea nah i think it's perfectly fair and fine the way it is, like >>97505128 said, the dwarf already has plenty of advantages and people aren't going to not play it over something like that.
>>97505033I will>>97505063Yeah, he seems to like the work I am doing to make things easier for him by actually reading the rules.
>>97505128>>97505167Thanks. I see the d10 even in some OSR product which also confused me.I think in the worst case scenario I will set up a smaller 2 handed (shepard's or something) axe (d8, dwarf useable) and a rarer longaxe (dane axe) d10 which is essentially a polearm and not usable by dwarves. People that want to see a bardiche (me included if I describe a certain culture) will also use the latter.
>>97505075>I keep reading and meeting people that want it to be d10Fuck them. It's fair to remove the "always loses initiative" rule from all two-handed weapons, though. It's a B/X oddity --- or was it already in Holmes? Either way, there's no such rule in O/AD&D and it's pretty unfair.
>>97505244>I will set up a smaller 2 handed (shepard's or something) axe (d8, dwarf useable) That's exactly what a B/X Battle Axe is, though?>and a rarer longaxe (dane axe) d10 which is essentially a polearm and not usable by dwarves. That would be the AD&D bardiche. Not that you have to call it that, mind you.
Some retards at rpgnet accused Finch of being an evil racist because goblins are brazillians somehow and evil cultists are a dogwhistle for jews lol. This is what you get for catering to crazy people. Not that it matters because Finch won't learn from this (OSRIC is still a good game though).

The maximum is based on the Charisma of each PCThere's also the Leadership proficiency, which add +1 to the maximum number of Henchmen allowed by Charisma. The reason I said 6 it's because, like it was said on another /osrg/ thread, henchmen also take Gold and XP together with the PCs, slowing the leveling of the PCs. Also, having too many Henchmen and PCs in a dungeon tend to create a situation where, in small corridors or rooms, there isn't enough space for everyone to fight.6 Henchmen is, in my opinion, a good number for taking on challenges without sacrifing too much money and XP.
I know we are all autists here but surely you anons realize that he was suggesting his opinion on a practical limit for henchmen not the maximum possible.

>>97506726>does liberal selection of the precise shooting proficiencyNo pe. White nationalist proficiency in precise shooting, on the other hand...
>>97506733>In your opinion does liberal selection of the precise shooting proficiency mitigate this?We had that same exact problem with a PC Explorer who didn't manage to roll for Precise Shooting. The player complained a lot... and rightly so, because, due to the stats he rolled, he was basically made of glass for fighting, and the moment enemies engaged a PC or an Henchmen, he was basically useless. He took Precise Shooting as an additionally proficiency as soon as he could, and now things are much better! So, my answer is ABSOLUTELY YES!If you want to preemptively avoid a situation like that, I suggest using the Fate Points (only 1 or 2, just to get the hang of it) from the JJ, page 395: one of way to spend them is to "temporarily gain one rank in any proficiency available to his class... for 1 turn (10 minutes)".Do that and any Explorer PC who got unlucky when rolling for Templates will feel more useful, especially at the starting levels! But, Fate Points are NOT for Henchmen, so it won't make a change for them.Choose your Henchmen wisely!
>>97506796You see comrade, when you chose the level 0 cantina keeper as your henchmen when makes 1st level you can just chose for him to take precise shooting as his bard class proficiency.

I experimented a lot with different grappling systems for BX; everywhere here who recommended contested HD rolls is retarded. The best way to do it is a streamlined version of the AD&D, where you make contested attack rolls. LotFP strangely does a good job of adapting the rules to a BX-derived system, but gave you a free attack against your foe if they try to grapple you, which is needlessly punishing in my experience.

Did osric 3.0 really change race to ancestry? That is really fucking lame if true.If I wanted to run Expedition to the Barrier Peaks in hyperborea, would I need to make any significant changes to the content presented? It doesn't look like much would need to be changed. I do know the slight variations for stat tables, and the generally stronger classes for hyperborea, might affect some encounters. I figure I would ask if anyone had some advice for it.
>>97507125Because when a general runs of for long enough a cast of characters with baggage and bullshit prop up. What old RPGs do you like? I love Retroclones. Been playing OSRIC and Trolls and Tunnels lately.
>>97507972>Trolls and Tunnels>Retroclone>OSR retard
>>97507970>would I need to make any significant changes to the content presented?Doubt it. Any advantage from the stronger classes is likely mitigated by the smaller numbers of PCs in modern groups (unless you're running a taut 8-man table I guess) and a lot of the challenges in Barrier Peaks are about eg not zapping yourself in the face with a laser gun you mistook for a tricorder anyway, or being innately suspicious of tree stumps.IMO the main issue might be the clash in tone, Barrier Peaks is both very "clean" 50s-70s sci-fi and unashamedly goofy, which isn't exactly the standard pitch of Hyperborea.
>>97507167It appears the rule to grapple this article outlines is>Make a normal attack roll against a foe you wish to grapple>If successful, you and your foe both roll HD>If your roll is higher, your foe is pinned and helpless>If your foe's roll is higher, they resist the grapple and you're stunned for a number of combat turns equal to the difference>If it's a tie, you're both upright and struggling, unable to attackI don't think this is terrible for Chainmail combat, but in BX your foe immediately becoming "pinned helplessly" on a successful grapple is pretty busted. I also think having to make an attack roll and then contested HD rolls is more clunky than just contested attack rolls but that is more to my personal taste.
>>97507897What sort of contested HD system do you use? What happens to a creature that becomes grappled? Can they escape a grapple? Can they attack while grappled? Can the creature doing the grapple attack other creatures? Can the grapple be reversed or only broken?
>>97508022Good to know, thank you. I was going to make it a bit more grim and maybe tie it to some atlantean or mi-go experiment stuff. It being a little goofy is alright with me, but I am biased since I like campy stuff.
>>97508063I think changing it to a mi-go vessel would be pretty doable, but it'll change the vibe of the module (which IMO in the original is a lot about the players identifying what their PCs don't know, that this is a Trekkish flying saucer, and then fucking with their expectations on the basis of that identification). In your place I'd read the module through properly first and foremost and feel out what parts can't be altered without just turning it into a different module.Anyway, glad if I could help!

>>97507062>but gave you a free attack against your foe if they try to grapple you, which is needlessly punishing in my experience.Like 3e? Isn't that something people playing 3e often complained about even when they did like the system?
>>97508119Because it was an abject lie, most probably.

second session for my game is today! excited since i should have the full six person strong group today. two people are rolling up new characters (since their last characters had their heads cut off) and i'm wondering if i should have any big happenings out in the world in the two weeks it's been since they last ventured forth. i had the idea of offering bounties for things like gnoll tongues or lizardman tails but think it might be too much of a reward for killing mobs, which seems against the spirit of things. they didn't wander around the caverns of thracia all that much either, so they never found the alternative entrances, which makes me think i should maybe try to gently nudge them to wander around the front door a little?how are all of you?
>>97511739great! tried to run a session of OSE for a 50 year old 5e grog (?) and all he did was bitch and moan and complain nonstop. It was fucking agonizing.

>>97511739Sounds fun anon. Agree the bounty thing might incentivize killing too much. Game is going well; the PCs are ranging from levels 1-4 now so it's I'm getting to experience the highs and lows of running for a mixed group. They have slowly been making more excursions to different adventuring locales near the base town, which everyone is enjoying but it's lighting a fire under my ass to finish the hex map I've been putting together. I want to have a massive 36x37 hex crawl but I can't conceivably print out a map with hexes that small on 8.5x11" paper, so I'm trying to condense all my best ideas in a 19x10 map. Alas, the compromises we make.

>>97511764that's wild lol. i got two friends who bitched about no feat or not enough book defined stuff to grind for but they're kinda retarded. one of them is in this game and seems to be having way more fun than last time, partially because i think i'm better at running the game and partially because we dropped two people from the group who were honestly not that great. in my experience most people really take to this style of game compared to something like 5e. it's given me confidence to maybe try running a classic traveller game again, since the last time i tried i got overwhelmed by how big space is (lol).>>97511980my rationale is that after so long of noventures, the fight between the gnolls and lizardmen spills out into the surrounding swampland and their populations in general are booming with just each other as potential dangers. since thracia's tough for level one's, it might work out to kick some extra xp just so everyone's not in danger of a rogue gnoll axe beheading them.sounds fun! have you considered just printing a bigger map at like staples or something though? could just use a third party printing service and have something bigger. or alternatively go and buy really big hex paper (i think office supply stores also carry that) and draw it by hand. i do dungeon maps by hand if i'm not stealing them from supplements but my hex map i just use a web app for.>>97511982thanks! excited to report the outcome later tonight.

>>97512009>If proficient, the prospective employer can use DiplomacyLike venture isn't strong enough already. I also don't interpret a signing bonus as a bribe either. You can bribe a guard to let you into a warehouse eithout escort , but you can't bribe the man who owns all the goods in the warehouse to let you in without escort. A signing bonus is more of the latter in my mind.
>>97512476I'm curious, too. It's not in B/X or AD&D or OD&D. I checked LotFP and ACKS, neither of them have that. I mean I don't hate it as a houserule, but it feels kinda unnecessary.
>>97513732Yet you ignore everyone telling you to chill out about it and it will become easier to talk about things and unocard on everything you do every post.
>DNI>Do not interact>AKA "Do not feed the troll"Good advice, everyone should take it
i'm back from the game!our brave heroes marched back to the caves and found the second entrance, i think this got them to understand that this dungeon might have multiple avenues of exploration since later on, my thief was wondering if he could roll a 75ft rope down from room 23 down to 31. i didn't really know desu, it seemed like too far of a climb for a rope stuck to a wall or floor with an iron spike? maybe someone else can give some advice i can pass along.unfortunately before they entered the second stairwell down, the brave barbarian was immediately crit by a full damage axe attack by cultists, killing him instantly. the rest of the group cleaned up before rounding the corner and meeting the cultists captive, a friendly dwarf that was kidnapped. another unfortunate casualty from strange death cult shenanigans.later while traversing the bridge, they had the idea of dousing the torch to not rile up the bats, only to then get fired upon by a cultist firing a bow on the bridge. a lucky crossbow shot from mr thief killed him basically instantly, which was cool.they then got into that room with the big statue. i must admit i think i pulled some punches here or they just got lucky, because they were in danger of getting reamed by fighters and clerics that could summon skeletons, but several good rolls later led to the fighters and clerics being cut down and all the skeletons being turned. they retrieved some trinkets from the corpses and the eye jewels from the statue after everyone but the dorf was paralyzed by its gaze. they then pulled the statue down to break it. it was at this point the dad in our group said he was beat, so they turned around and headed home.i came up with a couple overland encounters and they rolled up a black dragon encounter. i thought it'd be fun to make it a weird psychic swamp creep so they got shook down for an axe that one of them was holding onto for a bit. overall, pretty fun!

>>97514111are you blind?
>>97514198I'm not saying you don't have an enter key, I'm saying please use it more often. This shit is hard to read all packed together like that.
>>97514228>zoomers when you use paragraphs normallyLol.Lmao.Rofl even.

>>97514403>t's 2000 charactersYou could have split the post, it's not against the law
>>97514311NTAYRT. A single newline is not a best practice with an interface that uses neither indentation nor vertical spacing between paragraphs. With a single newline, you are hoping that each paragraph randomly happens to have a last line that is visibly shorter than the others, which often isn't the case. This results in paragraphs that are often barely visible if not completely invisible. In these contexts, which include simple text editors, simple (non-rich) email clients, typewriters, 4chan, LaTeX source code, markdown, and so on, the best practice is to use double newlines.>b-but muh reddit spacingThese are best practices that predate reddit by decades. People who call double newlines "reddit spacing" are not able to use 4chan correctly.
>>97514198>>97514531And the fact that you don't use capital letters either makes paragraphs even more difficult to read.
>>97513926Nice, Anon!I have to say that black dragon encounter is a typical example of why level 1 characters shouldn't be exposed to wilderness travel, though.
