Made a start on the Orcs and Goblins I got from my SS - aiming for a good tabletop standard. Turns out I received bang-on 500pts worth of models, so have signed up to an escalation league. Thanks again Floridanon!

Going to get AP medium instead, heard good things about that.
>>97516014Bit late to the party but got these for chistmas last year and they're pretty decent. Not top tier quality, but usable for base coats and medium size surfaces
I can't figure out how to get a consistent paint flow with the airbrush. When pulling back slightly to moderately paint starts coming out but stops immediately, only when I pull the trigger further back it kinda gushes out and starts coming out again. I'm using roughly 60:40 airbrush thinner to paint and 3 or 4 drops of flow improver, at 25 psi. Do I need to thin the paint even further or change the psi?
Finishing a test model for my word bearers kill team and i’m liking how it’s going so far. Would Basilicanum grey work well as a wash for the metal parts? And would a red wash or nuln oil be best for the armor recesses?

Is it worth buying glazes or is it smarter just using a medium to make your own?
>>97521329Lawl yes thats me

How is this coming along so far for a ginger vampire? So far I did Skrag brown base, Jokaero Orange at least that's what it says on the pot, I've always thought it looked wildly different and less saturated than what it's supposed to be according to the website, then a wash of 1:1 mix of reikland and cassandora orange washes. This is my first time trying for a real orange color other than extreme highlights on red.
>>97522009I think this might work as a base but you'll need to highlight the volumes up a bit more in the orange direction. Right now it's mostly just reading as brown. As an aside, I really don't like that hair sculpt and think it is going to be unnecessarily difficult to make look good.
Done with the second Liche Priest
>>97521569I think they combining your blended speed paint technique with your thicker paint higher colour stuff could be cool. do the model base with your speed paint stuff then use the heavier high contrast look for the face / osl effect? dunno. random thought. doesn't work out when I do it but your lines seem cleaner than mine
>>97521527you don't always need medium anyways, can use water for glazing for most colors
Does anyone have any advice on edge highlighting? It seems like every time I do this, one of two things happens: 1.) The line is way too thick and unwieldy or 2.) it barely shows up at all and then my paint instantly dries on my brush in a waxy consistency. It's like I can't seem to find the right consistency whatsoever. I eventually get it done by just doing line by line and cleaning my brush and tidying up, but I can tell I am not doing it correctly.
>>975224601) Get a good brush, ideally a natural one. Series 33 from Rosemary & Co and similar. Or, failing that, some top tier natural-like synthetics. Red Dot from Rosemary also is quite nice. Size around 0 to 1. 2) Get a good wet palette. You can either make your own or buy something like AK wet palette. Stay away from AP. 3) Mix the paint with tiny touch of water or medium until it's beads, but not too much. It's difficult to describe, it comes down to you experimenting with what is right. You'll get hang of it fast. 4) Remove excess water/medium by gently dipping it into a tissue or something. Just gently. 5) Try the paint on something that's not the mini first. If you are using latex/nitrile/etc. gloves, these are good, but any non-porous material will do. Repeat 3 to 5 as needed. Otherwise it's all just about practice and using the angles of the models.
>>97522069Does the current paint on it need work or would I be fine layering on with brighter oranges like Fire Dragon and Troll Slayer?

>>97523369NTA but "Can't afford" is not the same thing as "Won't overspend" GW charges $20 or more for singleton minis? well I get a kilogram of resin for $40-$50, which prints 50+ singleton minis, so anyone asking for half the fucking price of a bottle of raw material that goes that far is highway robbery.

Noob question. Is blue one of the easier color to paint? In terms of forgiving/needing lower effort to cover and layer and stuffs. Heard the yellow and white are nightmare, and red and black are quite hard to paint good as well. How about green?
>>97523784Brown, blue and black are the easiest colours to paint and have the best coverage. Black is a little tricky because you rarely ever use pure black paint and instead use very dark greys, and highlight it with lighter greys and blues. The hardest are white, yellow, and orange due to the pigments being semi-opaque. There are a lot of tricks to painting these colours but I wouldn't recommend using them as a scheme for a new painter.Generally speaking the darker the colour the easier to work with it is. Green and red are in the middle. Red can be annoying coming from a lighter base colour as it can come out pinky without a lot of coats.

Been working on a scimitar squadron recently.Switched from using a contrast paint over silver to Tamiya's X-13. I like the color a lot. also a lot easier to touch up on the mistakes I did along the way.
>>97524172why don't people here just use an airbrush and lacquers then?
>>97524121Gundams are in 90% cases very color accurate from the start, especially newer models. Most people leave them as they are or apply panel lining.
>>97524269Lacquers produce harmful fumes and are generally not something you can casually use at your desk. Airbrush have their uses but with small elements or miniatures you either use very intensive masking or very precise movements/small needles/etc or pick a brush and do the same stuff far easier and safer. Some people, especially mentioned gunpla modellers, also advocate lacquers as more mechanically resistant which makes sense given than their models are fully articulated. That being said, I painted my own gunpla with brush and water ased acrylics so it's mostly about preferences.
>>97524269Imprecise and annoying to work with because you need chemicals instead of water.
>>97524271plenty of people paint them though>>97524283>>97524291how come gunpla people can figure it out but you can't?
>>97524294>how come gunpla people can figure it out but you can't?Oh, it's you again. Gunpla big, miniatures small, like your brain.
>>97524294>how come gunpla people can figure it out but you can't?Different techniques for different goals and scales. Even among those that paint, a lot of them will just lay down a flat basecoat on disassembled pieces and call it a day, and it's not as if people here are at all averse to airbrushing basecoats either.
>>97524269setting up an airbrush takes time, and small things are hard to paint with it, yo it's not always an option, your are not going to wip it out just to paint a black templar shoulderpadacrylics are easier to work with too and won't give you a headache if you paint 3h in a closed room
Really not sure what I should do about the gems on the axe handle, but this is starting to get to a place I am happy with.
>>97524373>setting up an airbrush takes timeHeavily dependent on your airbrush and your setup. I can just:>connect the hose>switch it on>click the airbrush inLess than 20 seconds all in all. >your are not going to wip it out just to paint a black templar I mean, why not? But yeah, once you have like ten BT shoulderpads, you can just mix your colors and highlight colors and batch paint it all VERY fucking fast, with smooth blends, too.
Has anybody tried the new p3 boiler black metallic paint? Is it a good metallic paint? I want it for very dark metal treads.I’d appreciate pics of it when dried after painted on a model? The most I found was a photo of the bottle showing the dropper bottle. If 2025 p3’s boiler black is bad then I’m open to alternative acrylic metallic paint suggestions.
>>97524401>if i can and want everbody else does toothat's just childish logic>Heavily dependent on your airbrush and your setupno shit, not everyone has a permanent painting space, or can use a noisy compressor at any time, or wants to bother just to paint one color of a model that's otherwise only brush paintedinb4 just buy a silent compressor
>>97524450Nah, I'm not a clever person, so yes, if I can, then everyone (with a dedicated hobby space) can, as well. You only need an airbrush, compressor, and a quick disconnect which is usually very cheap. This is not something unique, all people with airbrush I know (mostly scale modellers) have better setups. And yeah, if noise is the issue, then just buy a silent compressor. Besides, most mid to high range compressors are fairly silent from the get go.
>>97524477>with a dedicated hobby spaceYou just answered your own question. I have my desk in my room but that's all, everything else have to be stored around the room, in drawers/boxes/etc when not in use. Making water palette with baking paper is simply much faster in such case. That being said, I'm not the only one to pre-apply base coat, preshade or simply prime large batch of miniatures or parts with airbrush, especially when I need to apply white or similar but since setting up and cleaning workspace takes up majority of time, it's simply not convenient in most cases. I used to get back from work at 7pm for last few years so you can imagine how adverse I am to wasting time. Also, like mentioned before, when dealing with miniatures, lacquers simply fails to provide real advantage over acrylics while bringing another set of disadvantages to the table. Mistakes, corrections, details, etc can be easily done by brush when required with acrylics (lacquers are very problematic to work with brush) and when spraying them you don't need more than open window/door and/or anti-dust mask instead of whole active ventilation setup to avoid poisoning. Plus, most "acrylics bad, lacquers gods" talk I saw on 4chan comes from people, who simply want to emulate "muh Japanese Twitter masters" without real understanding of what they are doing and why (seriously, complaining about being unable to import specific brand lacquers straight from Japan because anything else "won't look the same" sounds just silly at best). Not that anon you conversed with before, btw.
Last thread inspired me to get back into painting and gonna do a tree fella. Couple questions to jog my memory and shake off the rust.Don’t know what I was thinking years ago but this basecoat is way too grey for my taste now. Should I just do a full reappear with a warmer brown? Or should I just spray it with an ink? A thinned down warm brown paint to just kinda tint/glaze it? Also I can’t remember how “panel liner” technique works. If I want to run the classic sylveneth glowing blue into the engraved symbols do I need to do gloss varnish first? Sounds like a pain in the ass to repaint over the gloss but maybe I’m being lazy.
>>97524204I'm not too sure why they changed the squad/bike name but Scimitar sounds cooler than Sky-Hunter anyway. Is the Tamiya paint you're using the acrylic version? I was stuck deciding between that, TTC, or holding out whenever the fuck I can get Vallejo's true metallic stuff.
>>97524641Maybe it was confusing.>Is the Tamiya paint you're using the acrylic version?Yes, alcohol based acryllic paint. I used AK's High Compatibility Thinner for application, but I think it might not be the right kind, as the paint kinda separated on me in the cup. I'll try pure IPA next time.
>>97524730Would be good to hear results. In any event, looking forward to see your dudes come along.Personally, I do actually have two bottles of these but I'm not sure if it would be enough for ~100 models even after thinning, since my first army coasts off a pretty big bottle of metallic paint.

>>97527563>aren't sd gunpla roughly the same size as a tau robot?IE: not small?
My schizo theory is that miniature painters have been psyoped by GW to hate everything that's not brush painting with acrylics. Which curiously happens to be what they produce and recommend for their products
>>97527661>tau robot>robotIIRC tau drones are quite small, their battlesuits are the big guys.
>>97527720What would people like in your opinion if not for the psyop?I haven't been following whatever this gunpla conversation is, if that is relevant.
>>97527720That's because you're dumb. Contest painters use any trick available to win and they largely choose brush on acrylics to achieve the best results.
>>97527720what techniques are as easy to use as painting with a brush?
>>97527720Well, that's a retarded theory given how popular airbrushing and oil paints are. Mini painters just use predominantly brush painting because it's better suited to smaller models with more fine detail, and use (aqueous) acrylics because they're the most user-friendly for brush painting. Other tools/materials are then typically just used in conjunction with brush-painted acrylics, so most people will default to using the same acrylics for everything anyway (even if they don't take to airbrushing as nicely), rather than buying different types of paint+thinners for the same project
>>97525874Something similar happened in my country recently with playground sand. Entire parks had to be decontaminatedThey might've gotten their sand from the same source
>>97527720oil washes have been super trendy as of late so I am not sure about your schizo theory. The popularity of acrylics I believe comes down to their relatively low toxicity, fast drying times, and availability. I have to go to specialty stores to get enamels and I've never seen lacquers for modeling/hobby for sale in physical retail ever, but every art, hobby, and gaming store has a paint rack or two of acrylics for sale.
>>97527563>can't you just...No. Holy shit, why every single time I list viable lists of what prevents me from doing this or that SOMEBODY online absolutely must insist that Im wrong? Any advice before I paint the whole army? The red is already applied to them but erything else could change
>>97528720Hail Hydra?
>>97528720why does the red look so bumpy? also you have some wash pooling or something inside the trim in some areas that doesn't look so good.
>>97528720clean the base rim bruh
Resprayed the basecoat from whatever the hell I was trying to do years ago. Now I’m slopping in the deeper “fresh” wood. Should be easier to fix the mess with a more consistent base now too.Hands are shakey as fuck and lost a lot of brush control, maybe this was a rough choice to be my first project after not touching a brush for 2 years but I’m having fun, can’t wait to do something besides brown soon.
>>97528720The red needs highlights. It also looks like your primer is fucked up since it's so bumpy. The bone on the chest looks bad. It's mostly just grey/white with a red/brown wash. It needs some deeper color, depending on what kind of bone you exactly want. I usually go for a tan base with something like Zandri Dust, but there's lots of ways to make good looking bone. The weapons are boring. I struggle with TMM, so I understand, but the steels needs some contrast to show shadows.
>>97528805>>97528931I used turbodork redrum over bold pyrrole red over white primer all airbrushed, the bumps are super fine sparkles, and notes taken thanks!>>97528813Never >:)

Hey anons, looking for feedback on this guy before I continue painting the squad. I’m pretty pleased with how the scheme turned out.

>>97524813From some test easy-builds I had months ago, Omega Blue is definitely a bit pale even with a poorly-done black wash (maybe it was the brush or something) that is somehow less potent than the blue and purple ones I tried in the back. I'd say it's usable and good, but you're probably right in that I could do better.Vallejo's gunmetal blue on the right is what I'd probably use for Seekers or Effrits. Tried a phlato blue ink over silver as well to sort of try and get that old palette AL used to have on the left, but the coat felt shitty and so I'd probably try mixing the two together next time than just doing it straight on.
The hard parts are over, but painting these buttons is taking long. I still have to highlight the dark brown on these Yaegirs. The cloak on the sniper looks like it has something off to me but I can't put my finger on what. I'm thinking it's too much white and that I should break up the cloak with some grey stripes/camo. Does that sound right? How's this looking so far?
Still need to do highlights but the Khazad Dum dwarves are mostly done. It's has been very interesting working with models that are this tiny, but very fun as well. Easily the smallest models I have worked with.

I like how the bone part of the armor is shaping up. Apart from forgetting the recess shading before the main layer on her left shoulder and bracer. But generally the tone is what I wanted on those bits.Idk though if the bones on the ground should match since they're also bone, or if they should just be neutral and not blend in with her. Do some of you anons look at your paint collection and wonder if you’ve fallen into the trap of brand loyalty?I feel that way with Ak paints being the dominant number of paints in my collection.I have pro acryl metallics and armypainter washes but even then I sometimes wonder if I have fallen into the “consoomer” meme for Ak paints as they’re the largest in my collection.I do feel that sticking with historical colors are the best choice as they get easily replaced when a company goes under. And I also think Vallejo, Ak, ammo and tamiya are all more or less mimicking each other’s paints color tone wise so their paints are a safe choice.I’m looking at some of ammo by mig paints and curious about the acrylic metal paint options.
>>97532151I buy citadel paints because they’re the most accessible to me. I have a couple fluor paints from pro acryl and vallejo for effects, but my collection is 99% citadel.

>>97532151Anon, why do you insist on manufacturing problems where there are none? Are you bored? If AK works for you (and it does, most of their range is great and simply werks), then I can't see a reason why having mostly AK would be somehow bad.
>>97532221>accessibleI understand completely. Especially when the paints are from a good lgs or hobby store.>>97532245You’re right. Especially their cobra motor, ionic and atom paints?>most of Al’s range just werksWhat are the acrylic stinkers of Ak’s acrylics so I can avoid them and look elsewhere?
>>97532305I'm not a fan of AK metallics, but by all means, they are okay and top tier scale modellers use them all the time. It's just that Vallejo makes much better ones, in my opinion.
>>97532305I use a lot of the Atom paints since they've got very good local availability. They're perfectly good in the same way that most contemporary acrylics are, not massively better or worse than AK, PA, Vallejo and so on, vaguely fit the same palette of historical-ish colours you mentioned in your previous post and they airbrush like a charm.
>>97532318>I'm not a fan of AK metallicsThat’s fine. >>97532305>Does anybody have experience with ammo by mig’s acrylic paints?I like them, their gunmetal is fucking nice. I bought a couple shades of pink from them that were weirdly thick compared to their other paints I've tried. Just needed a bit more water than usual and it was fine.

>>97536987you probably won't be able to make one that's better than what you have, I'd say either shell out for a nice one, or stick to your chinkbooth and wear a respirator. That would make sense, I guess.Unfortunately I have a lot of Citadel paints and I'm reluctant to switch paints for anything I've already painted, for consistency, but maybe I'll get something else and try them out and see how it goes (and/or for colors I haven't painted yet on current models).
>>97538548I feel like the top part of this would be in the way of my head? It's very nice though.
I hate building necrons. Why did I just order hundreds of them.
>>97539642That's my theory, yeah. I guess you could go through the annoying process of transferring the paint to bottles. The flecks that are already in wouldn't be removed, but it might stop new ones from forming. Otherwise all you can do is pray close attention and fish them out before applying.
>>97539549Well, it's just a shield but it also have mount for (plasma) rifle on handle, right arm will carry a sword and he have huge jumpjets on his back...Now I have to paint him red, have I?
>>97539646I think its just the photo being taken from almost inside it; he was showing off to me all the little attachments and magnet paint handle mounds, but it was the only photo I had. The booth was actually way larger than I thought at first, I think it's like 18" tall and maybe over 2' wide. I sent him a link to this thread so maybe later he can post some more pictures. He caddied the whole thing up in solidworks or something with the intent that anyone with a chopsaw and a hand drill could make it.
>>97539676My paint collection is a mix of Vallejo and Citadel. I have moved a lot to dropper bottles, especially if it's for ones I need to mix and want easy consistency.Having come back to the hobby recently and contrast paints not being a thing from before, I've been impressed with Citadel's range of those, regardless of price, and those are fine in the flip top pots (though ones I mix are still transferred). I have not tried other brands' version of these though. If I need a paint right now, Citadel's the only option I can go and buy physically and not wait for delivery.Citadel base paints are the worst offenders in the pots though. The paint is so thick and every time you open it, so much ends up dripping around the hinge and squelching out when you close the lid.The only specks/graininess I get is from pure white if I don't water down way more than any other paint. That's Vallejo Dead White. If there's a version that I don't need 5 coats of even over a light base for decent and smooth coverage, I'd gladly replace.Citadel brushes are about the worst I've tried, even more so when the price factors in, but I've had almost immediate issues with them fraying and not keeping points. >>97539072yeah this is the stuff
>>97539059>AC infinity cloudline pro s6>134€i mean, for that price i would expect it to suck your dick

>>97539921Its 99usd over here but yeh you get what you pay for. If you want it to sound like a wind turbine get a shit one.
>>97539840>The only specks/graininess I get is from pure white if I don't water down way more than any other paint. That's the general chalkiness of titanium based white paint, that's not the specks we're talking about right?
