>have large Premodern collection>get into Premodern about 4 years ago>play in local events and accumulate more cards>endless sour grapes posted online about card prices, especially after the last price explosionWishing we could put the genie back in the bottle and return to a fun niche format, so I'm glad the price is keeping people out. So many shitheads have joined my community in this last year fleeing the WOTC formats and they're awful to play with. Old School gods truly understood this and I wish Premodern had been gatekept similarly instead of pushed outward
>>97654950I didn't jump in on premodern because it felt too far away from the formats I liked from the older eras (notably block constructed) but I feel similar over cubing. Weird to see so many people jump into cube as the solution to their problems in recent years, only to then stuff their cubes with all of the archetypes and design mistakes that have ruined current magic and then complain that cube feels power crept. It is like they don't understand the most basic lesson of cube, that you can make it how you want.
>Can MTG be great again? No. EDH is MTG. And that's all there is.
>>97655004>I am, I just win in spite of it because I am one of the best players in the world.I seriously don't know if this is ironic.>meanwhile you are trimming lands to jam more common draft filler cards into your deck then complaining when your 8/8 all-basic manabase inevitably fucks you over when you try to cast your 1BBB 4-drop.deckbuilding.I could accept the little bird BB cost as something that could be retarded not going a little hard on swamps, not that it happened. You didn't see the mana curve if you really think that a deck were everything but 4 cards costs 3 or less needs more than 16 lands (even 15 would be fine)>you don't even understand the basics of Limited No, I don't understand the basics of arena rigging, and I bet if you played IRL you would always lose at least 2 rounds every draft or limited tournament.
>new thread>4 posts in 2 hoursFuck WOTC they are unironically killing MTG

Are there any cards that become problematic enough in constructed that this effect couldn't be printed on a 1-drop?
>>97655155No

>>97655326In what format on what level? You can build some fun Pauper deck I bet.
>>>97655279New Zealand here. We're doing monthlies now and I discovered today and the most mom-and-pop store imaginable has had people playing casual premodern for about a year so far disconnected from the aforementioned monthlies.>>97655326If you're new to the game and have never played it before, buy OLD bulk from 2011 or prior, make your decks from these cards only without purchasing any singles or sealed, and leave it at that. You can add more bulk if you want more variety. Kitchen table is the best way to engage with the game as a new player because it spares you all the garbage WotC are ramming down people's throats

>>97655364Let me correct myself>herselfIts obviously a dude btw
Tbh this game needs ways to make peoples collections relevant instead of focusing on the few best cards.Only 1 of each card per table?Only 1 of each card per player?Only 5/10/15 rares per deck?I also read about a new format with a points system where good cards are worth more points effectively.
>>97655326It's worth it if you want to build fun kitchen table decks or a cube to play with friends, otherwise not
>>97653457Coincidentally, there has been a split off from Duel Commander committee very recently and the new branch had just made their own 1v1 format where commander rules apply and instead of a traditional banlist the game runs on a point systemhttps://www.mtgdc.info/I seriously don't think tournament cEDH would work as well as 1v1. There's too many moving parts and social dynamics going on. Assembling a pod a running tournaments is already hard on its own.
And they're going to replace Brawl on Arena with cedh.
>>97655426The entire reason they don't have Commander on Arena is because they coded the client like shit (again) so it literally can't support more than 2 players. It's at the point they think it's easier to make a third fucking client than bring it to Arena.
>>97655433I thought cedh is 1v1? I don't really play any edh and its offspring.
>>97655426arena is already bugged mess of a clientimagine how horrible its going to be with 4 players in a single game

What are you gonna do when MTG becomes officially a EDH-only game?
Is opening during a limited game better than opening packs alone?
>>97655509It will never be officially. There's no money in this.
>>97655409>AeonshiftI'm glad the guy decided to rename his format, this will lead to less confusion in the future as more people start getting into Duel Commander>>97655426cEDH is strictly a 4-player format and the card pool is bigger than vintage, it's never coming to arena in any shape or form>>97655461EDH is the casual 4-player format everyone is familiar with at this point, the "c" for competitive just means people are trying their best to win, there's no actual rule changes Duel Commander is the 1v1 format, it's on MTGO and it has its own banlist and people in charge are not associated with WotC >>97655509I don't think that will happen but if it does, I'll keep playing Duel Commander

>>97655626Are you retarded? It's a rhetorical question you retard. Consecutive sets have mechanics that benefit one another. That's why you often see cards being banned from 1 set ago. They weren't deemed an issue until they started synergizing too much with the new set.

>>97655326it's a good deal if you wanna proxy but you can also find a better deal if you keep looking

>>97655372>I also read about a new format with a points system where good cards are worth more points effectively.thats just $30 Value Vintage, good cards cost too much to be included in the deck (or are banned in all other formats so the price is low but you can easily edit the rule to use only the highest price a card ever hit to exclude those out too) and so far it's a pretty fun format. also Penny Dreadful but that one is slightly too low power for me

How often do you guys play a game of the sealed draft game mode? Playing a 3 pack draft of a 5 dollar pack every week is like 750 dollars a year. So you want to be playing a game per week or every 2 weeks and be trading for what you need, ending up with a decent variety in your 1k-2k cards.
>>97656122>Playing a 3 pack draft of a 5 dollar pack every weekFuck I wish I could find places to draft every week.Adding up it's a lot, but in the end it's not that much more expensive than other activities you could do like watching a movie, eating good, or doing some bowling.I'm currently selling my collection so whatever I open in draft is just thrown away once the event is over.
>>97656163Just play Arena, the numbers are way better. Especially if you don't care about a collection.
>>97655973>slowly dyingIt has been dead for years
>>97656172Its nice to have a collection, because that transitions into making your own cube or just playing kitchen table.Arena is excellent for playing limited, it just doesnt replace paper.
>>97654885It should have stayed this way...What are y'alls thoughts? Principle Designer, Jeremy Jarvis.2 sets a year:https://youtu.be/9LijlGLFKTE [Open]
>>976562773-4 sets a year, with blocks was the sweet spot
>>97656277Only 9 years ago... I'd be fine with them whoring out MtG a little, 3 sets and they can do a UB mini set like TMNT (just not in Standard) and Secret Lairs like usual. But 7 fucking sets a year added to Standard makes no fucking sense even from a sales perspective, at some point the pigs run out of milk and move on.
>>97656291Block of three sets + core set (you could ignore due to low powerlevel) was perfect.
>>97655973How am I responsible? I never bought a universes beyond, I never bought a secret lair, I never bought nor played anything Commander related. I voted with my wallet. Did you?
>>97655062anon I'm just trying to give you advice as a Limited specialist who thousands of dollars in Limited tournaments last year.look at this deck you posted.you come on social media crying about the game being "rigged" against you but you are playing a 41 card deck with 8 green sources and 8 black sources.you fundamentally have no idea what you're doing. you are a dogshit player who doesn't know how to build a proper limited deck.your delusions tell you there is some grand conspiracy against you when this mana base fucks you over but it's entirely your own fault.all you know how to do is force the best archetype in the format and then cry when it doesn't give you free wins, like most arena players.

>>97655754Canadian Highlander would be fine if it was 60 card. 100 card decks are trash and it's insane that people still pretend like any of the retards at their LGS can sufficiently randomize a 100 card deck, much less over and over again in a format with fetches and tutors. EDH only gets away with it because it's a party game where nothing matters.
>>97656490nah, that guy called anyone who played limited a tranny
>>97655973
>>97656514Not him (thanks god). Nothing wrong unless you are playing arena. Arena is rigged, everyone knows it. There are certain land rations that guarantee good draws on their shuffler + (best of hands) opening hand system. I remember that they had to do a code fix up as to not allow players to play 15 mountains in standard and get away with it (until like 2022 you could play 15 mountains and 45 red spells and you would almost always get 2 mountain in hand and everyturn you would draw gass). And there are other confirmed rigging like likewise of playing against shit decks depending of what you have in your deck (or what deck you are playing). I don't think there are any confirmation about paypigs having advantages during match making or during game but I wouldn't be surprised to be honest.
>>97656172No thanks, drafting on arena and drafting irl are two completely different beasts.

>>97656918Proxies are explicitly not allowed in most tournaments.>>97656923Yes.In a world where rent, food and fuel prices have gone up 50% in the past 5 years I cannot justify spending thousands of dollars on a game I play less than once a month.
>>97656277Personally I always found even 3 sets a year uncomfortably fast, but I have to agree with the rest that from a business standpoint the "1 block of three sets + 1 bonus set per year" model was the sweet spot where the releases were as fast as they could be without damaging the game as a game. They could have likely kept that pace up indefinitely without ruining any format. The damage is done though and I don't think there's any realistic way to undo it.
>>97656938Who cares about competitive MTG these days?Wizzards definitely doesn't
>>97656938>Yes.There are plenty of top-tier Premodern decks you can build that are relatively cheap. From UG Madness (to even it's newer version, the GW Madness), to Sligh, White Wennie, to even Moneyball Black, etc. - All of these are pretty cheap is you use new printings of the cards. You don't even need to proxie anything, but if you do, most tournaments allow up to 8 or 10 proxies, plus the gold border cards are always allowed as well.Premodern is actually cheaper than most people think if you go for the newer printings. Granted that the cards won't look as good as the old ones, but if you're just looking for a cheap way to build a good deck, that's the best route.Complaining about the price of the cards is no excuse, unless you really want the old frame ones.
>>97656964>There are plenty of top-tier Premodern decks you can build that are relatively cheap. No there's not. There's maybe two.I'm not going to fucking start a new format if I'm going to be constrained to playing Dark Ritual Hypnotic Specter: The Deck forever. That's insane. If I play Magic I want to play a different deck every time.
>>97656964>GW Madness>$573UhI think we need to recalibrate what "affordable" means chiefPretty much every deck with more than one color is too expensive in Premodern because they stupidly didn't ban fetchlands.

>>97654950I think youtubers doing MTGO content is unhealthy for the format. While yes it does raise awareness, it results in the same meta-slaving that plagues official formats. Even if the youtuber isn't playing Enchantress or Stiflenought himself, he will run into at least 1 opponent doing so and people who watch enough will notice that those decks persistently show up between leagues even if they aren't checking Goldfish. >>97657476Can you express it in sanskrit? I'm not following...
>>97657475No, I'm actually worse: I'm a premodern player. And if FE was so useless, then why even ban it I'm the first place? I've talked to premodern players, and the reason is simply that FE is so affordable that seeing it on the table disrupts the vibe. It's accessible, and part of premodern is that its less accessible. A significant number of the premodern community wants to run 4 mox diamonds, etc. Premodern exists to also not step on the toes of Oldschool 93/94 players (who also ban FE for the same reason). I point this out just so people have the clear answer as to WHY premoder exists. As for your other question, yeah, there's some cool power in the set and lots of fun tribal archtype cards. Namely though there's Goblin Grenade and Hymn to Tourach.

>>97657649This is pretty ridiculous, didn't even know this existed.
>>97657621Stop being a fool. Simply go look and you'll see such comments in the community. The official reason is that Premodern was made as a sissy format to Oldschool 93-94, not using any of its sets, so it set itself to be 1995 and onward. Oldschool openly excluded Fallen Empires because of its reputation of being so affordable. So if FE isn't an Oldschool set, why can't Premodern adopt it?Because the intent of Premodern was vibes first, gameplay second. It was never meant to be a refuge from wotc's abuse. Playes looking to it for that are partially being misled and they'd be better off forging their own format that included the entire old border cardpool and openly allowed proxies.

>>97657911but anon, haven't you heard?the format is perfectly balanced, there are no problem cards whatsoever
>>97657865>StoryYou know this raises a question of how WotC actually plans to build their original brand image when the game's structure has been one of vapid consumption basically from its outset. Jumping from plane to plane with the majority of characters never being heard from again after their 1 year in the block set. Jacestice League was an attempt to recreate Weatherlight's Star Trek-lite recurring cast but they were all unlikable assholes so it went nowhere. Now without blocks, if they want people to feel invested in the characters, a small set of recurring characters is more important than ever, but the question is how do you even do this without it feeling insanely forced? Existing characters are basically paper-thin and doing fuckall in the story, and a new "protagonist" would be a sudden and blatant departure from how Magic is currently used to telling its story (that is, a disconnected clusterfuck).
>>97657933To be honest I liked early jace/liliana/gideon/chandra/nissa (hitler mode), the problem is when they became some some of multiverse america recurring every single set and bringing freedom™ everywhere
>>97657772pairs well with Avatar's Wrath
>>97657960I mean that's the larger problem. If you have a planeswalker running around to all these universes, why don't they intervene in situations they deem problematic but could resolve easily? Even Joe Schmoe (forma de spark) powerscales above most wizards without one. In similar stories (Star Trek, Dr. Who) the limiting factor is that generally the traveler is just some dude so there's very obvious limits to how much influence they can exert. The current state of planeswalkers basically runs into the Sorin/Ugin problem where you know they have all the power to fix anything they deem to even be a minor inconvenience, but if you let them do that all narrative tension instantly evaporates. WotC """tried""" fixing this by giving them a Trek-esque pseudo Prime Directive, but it was never explained why they do this (beyond abstract reasoning), and again it's not supported by how in Star Trek, the crew was still just random dudes with an exposition device and a stun gun so there were obvious limits to what they could do even in emergencies where the rules were less important. Meanwhile Magic is out here saying "the multiverse was about to end and Sorin was more focused on beating his daughter."

Also pretty nice because some really obvious collector's material across brands is appearing here that you can get for pennies on the dollar to valuation 20 years from now if/when the game survives that long and various legal issues or ownership challenges arise - as they often do over a few decades of IP management - to tank the partner's licensing potential.

>>97659914>bloodghast, timeline culler and twilight diviner>Discard tribal, but it's reanimator>Bloodghas/Splitter being used as nuJutsu fodderOh yeah, it's all coming together.ngl casting Technique off of a Bloodghast sounds like absolute fucking cancer
Restless Vents swings for 6 damage with Pizza Throwing online and that doesn't feel reasonable.Multiple Pizzas scale exponentially. One is one discard, two damage. Two is two discards, eight damage. This shit was not tested.Given the current absolute fucking state of the format, hopefully this garbage won't find a home.
>>97660068>spending 2 cards and 8 mana to deal 8 damage per turnwhoa...
>>97660076In case you are too retarded to notice, Restless Vents is a land.
>>97660076Anon who fucking cares about card disadvantag. We have Wheel in Standard now. We WANT to dump our hand to get maximum power from it.
>>97660084In case you're too retarded to notice, the enchantment you're building around isn't.
>>97660164>In case you're too retarded to notice, the enchantment you're building around isn't.>"You have to play your wincon to win."Wow, riveting commentary anon.
the new broken card is actually this oneIt's a t2 kill with emry, grinding station and a mox
>>97660172>You can't win without your winconFixed that for you. Go ahead and test out the deck lol, the simple fact that you're running 24 lands with that curve shows you have no fucking clue what you're doing.
>>97660182
>>97660188I wasn't the one who started out calling people retarded.
>>97660202If you get mad at straight facts, perhaps a hugbox echo chamber might be more your speed.
>>97656893Should I run zero, one, or four copies of Phyrexian Arena in Moneyball Black?
>buy The Ooze (full art) for 10 NZD, knowing full well I'm buying waying too early and that the price should drop a lot as boosters get ripped>check price 24 hours later out of morbid curiosity as to whether the price suddenly plummeted>bordered is 20 NZD minimum countrywide, full art is 36.50 NZD minimumWhat the heck happened? And is it just in this country, or is this happening everywhere?
>>97660268TMNT isn't getting opened by many people so any of the cards that ARE good are shooting to the moon in price. In two weeks it'll probably go down a bit. While The Ooze is a very good card, it's not a staple that goes in ALL decks like some people are treating it as for some reason.
>>97660268Tmnt is still in presale prices, euro nigger
>>97660256Uh /b/tard your Graveborn Muses????
The fucking Wheel of Pizza into dumping your hand to Pizza Throwing for 14 damage is, unironically, extremely stupid.
>>97660356YOU VILL EAT ZE PIZZASLOP AND YOU VILL ENJOY IT

>>97659999I like it. I'm a noob though, I had to give up on hard mode when a parrot destroyed me with alrunds epiphany, or when a giant throws 3 lightning bolts at your face and it's enough to kill.
>>97659999One of the latests updates broke my custom cards and I am pissed. My deck has 4 serra ascendants and I have 50+ life.Rate my gear.
