Just watched a Yugioh stream because I hadn't seen a game of Yugioh in over a decade. A single turn cycle took 15 minutes. Each player tutored for a card in their deck 5 times a turn. Nobody had any sort of interaction while this happened, they just sat there while their opponent played solitaire. Each card is legitimately a paragraph in length and they had to reach a card about 10 times because they didn't know what it did. If you are advocating that this is a better game experience than Magic you are absolutely fucking retarded.

One day, a chad joined our LGS discord and said he didn’t like constructed and couldn’t ever make FNM and wanted a buddy to draft 1v1 with. So I told him I’d be down to split a box of the latest set (neon dynasty at the time) and Winston draft with him once a week. The victor after 3 matches got to steal any one card from the opponent’s deck to keep, and we would pick an “MVP” from our deck and have the other guy autograph it as a memento.
That’s the most fun I’ve ever had playing magic, and I don’t think I’ll ever get a memory like that with this game again.

Wizards doesn't market Magic the Gathering to kids. They had Duel Masters and its reboot Kaijudo for that, but the dub for Duel Masters makes 4kids localizations look like a raw Japanese manga and they made the show when the card pool was too shallow. It made the game look boring.

There seems to be a big difference between IRL premodern tournaments and MTGO grinders. People IRL just play what they like for fun. MTGO grinders play what they think is tier1 top deck and it ruins the format for everyone. If you don't allow proxies people will mostly play things they can afford, i.e. psychatog without intuition, sligh/burn, BW control, etc instead of just what they think will get them at least 4-1 or top 8. The same approach applies to Arena where people often just mindless spam the top 3 decks because they think it will win them the rankings faster.

Part of the reason you get metas like pic related. Though with standard it translated to IRL because that's just the nature of standard players. They're not playing for fun. They're playing to win money just like the MTGO pig plays to earn tix to translate into money.

It goes hand in hand with increased linking of real world identities and values to online presences and culling of anonymity on the internet. Someone posted a webcomic here recently titled "bike cuck on gatekeeping" which sort of captures what I'm trying to get at.

Caring about things requires effort, if nothing else. I think it's possible to interpret this as something of a blessing, because it filters people who don't. If someone has that attitude of apathy, it's better to avoid interacting with them as much as possible. Accessing now uncommon independent websites like independent forums or spinoff imageboards requires too much effort for the average person, so those sites end up being similar to how the whole internet was pre-smartphones and social media.
