tapping it with the blunt edge of an exacto knife doesn't really prove much. if you put masking tape on it will any paint lift up when you peel it off? will it craze or chip if you drop it off the table onto a hard floor? if it does chip will it continue to flake off?

>still not convinced you need primer or varnish, even on metal minis
If you don't have primer you're just going to have to prime it with paint. If you don't have varnish you're just going to have to fix the pain job eventually. It's not mandatory but it's just rational to use to save time and sleep.

WIP of my zombiedragon. Always nice painting a big model without a deadline
>>
What would be a good source of decals for SF themed customs and models? When I checked store with modeling supplies for decals, they had absurdly huge selection of very specific WWII era planes and tanks, mostly German (why it's always WWII and why it's always German, holy shit), kind of "this specific battle group operating in this particular time and place", which does not fit my needs. There are also Wh40k decals but these cost way too much.

I can easily buy decal paper for laser printer but there is a serious problem of lacking white ink. And from what I remember even if you buy (very expensive) white ink cartridge for laser printer, it replaces black, creating another set of problems.
>>
>>97701491
yeah if you need white is a bummer, for somethings like shields you can make do by basecoating white and covering the whole thing, that's how the victrix shield transfers work, but it's not ideal

however there's a bunch of things you can do with flat colors and no white, a lot of picrel have no white on them

Which line of contrast-style paints would you rec for someone who's never had anything to do with? I'm generally speaking fan of vallejo paints, and I hear that speedpaints 2.0 have a bunch of issuesin general.
>>
>>97702091
speedpaints 2 are fine if you want those kinds of paints, you'll see a lot of complaining about them largely just because they're contrast style paints, not because there's anything actually wrong with them.
I would recommend speedpaints 2.0 in theory, but depending on your location it's possible just getting contrast paints would be better or more easily accessible at least, but they're also fine.
ProAcryl just released its first line of contrast style paints, but the lineup is quite limited. If you wanted more options to mix colors rather than a large lineup of specific individual colors that might be a good option, but I've never used them, so can't recommend, they're probably fine though.

PROBLEM SOLVED !

Sooo, you remember when I said oil wont dry even months later ?
The problem was my oil paints all along.
Solution ?
Let the paint dry on paper towel for the night, mix 1:1 of oil paint and liquin, and then dilute it with mineral spirit.
If you want to be sure, mix in more liquin.
No varnish needed, it dried under couple of hours completely.

And if you want even more to be sure you wont have my problem, DONT BUY ARTIST GRADE OIL PAINTS TO DO OIL WASHES (mine was Daler Rowney Georgian Oil Colors).
>>
>>97702156
I haven't used enamels since I was a young kid because testors was the default, but maybe this is why enamel effects are the norm and not oil products. They still reactivate easily for adjustments and cleanup but also actually dry unlike oil paints that need to oxidize to be properly dry.

>>
At what point did you guys make the call that your brushes aren’t up to the challenge anymore? I’ve been using brush conditioner on some synthetic hobby lobby brushes and while they’re surprisingly good and have taken me far, when it comes to details they’ve really started to fall behind regardless of what I do. Feel like graduating them to base coats only.
>>
>>97705616
Basically whenever they won't consistently hold a tip anymore. They generally get to a point where they'll hold a tip shortly and you can get a few strokes out of it, but it will quickly get all fucked up, and that can be annoying. That's generally when I either try and salvage it with a more thorough cleaning, or buy a new one and cycle that one into the base-coat style brushes like you do. That's for sable though, Idk, I don't really like synthetic brushes outside of utility purposes.
>>
>>97705616
>synthetic
if it's too badly hooked, can't form a point, is the bristles or broken or bent. synthetic brushes can't be repaired. When they are fucked up it's over.

>sable
I've only had to retire sable brushes that were badly abused and 20 years old. Even if it can't form a point anymore, you might give it a bath in some solvents and shampoo it. You might be surprised.
>>
I'm gonna add to what other anon said, since he mentioned hooked synthetics being unsalvageable.
If you paint even a medium amount, you should 100% get a couple of kolinsky sable brushes. They last so much longer than synthetics that you'll probably actually save money even if you're just buying really cheap synthetics and not even nice synthetics.
But not only that, going back to synthetics for a bit recently, even just for base coats I realized how much worse the synthetics were at maintaining proper moisture in the paint.
Nice brushes just make the whole process so much more pleasant. And they last a really long time while actually being properly maintainable, and fixable. Ideally you keep them in perfect condition but it's also not totally the end of the world if you do end up getting paint in the ferrule or whatever - with synthetics just using them normally wears them down in days or weeks, even if you are taking care of them.
>>
>>97704709
Good bone and tome
>>
>>97705673
For the sake of any newbies in the thread, this is entirely correct, with the condition that you know how to and put effort into maintaining your brushes. Personally I recommend all painters start with cheapo brushes that are disposable because you will more than likely fuck up your first few, even if you're trying to keep them healthy. Once you've learned brush care definitely get some higher quality brushes, it's a no brainer.
>>
>>97705673
>>97705777
Is there any truth to acrylic metallics fucking up brushes faster than other acrylics?
>>
>>97705795
NTA but apparently they damage them due to presence of metal flakes. Some anons here claims it's bullshit but I don't want to take risks and simply use synthetics for metallic paints, so far it worked out nicely.
>>

I think people mostly just worry about accidentally contaminating the non-metallic paints with essentially glitter, you would notice even a single mica particle.
I usually do all the painting, base coat the metallic areas in a sensible color, then at the end varnish if I'm going to, and then do the metallics on a disposable dry palette and with fresh water, but I use the same brushes. I just make sure to actually properly clean them after metallics, while I don't always bother to.

Big thing I learned is I really should paint the gold parts in like brown first then apply the gold since getting it thick enough to not have black spots took like 3 layers, 4 in some places. Any advice for how to shade it? Im thinking a midnight purple really thin in the joints, hten like a lighter purple just barely using the edge of the brush on raised parts? And finally the axe head. First time trying to do color transition with glazes. Think I slopped the off-white on a bit too hard
Would another layer of the previous yellow fix it?

Knights are interesting, they're surprisingly not bad at all for less experienced painters to do up, while some good ones can go real crazy with them.

Also, checked. The moldline on the melta bothers me though.

Armor is great, got the blue green shimmer down. The contrast with the cloth and pop colors on his belt and axe haft are good accents.

Has anyone here used sponges for building terrain? How do they react to glue and primer? Today while I was doing my groceries i started thinking if they could be useful material for DIY terrain. Alien plants and bushes for example.

I had one of those in my bathroom for a few years. Upon trying to use it recently, after it just sitting for years, it just started to disintegrate. Like how rubber does that.

They might work??? I don't know never used one myself for something like that. I'd be worried about them being too soft and breaking or cracking any paint applied to them.

I noticed that if I try to spray (as base coat) metallics using airbrush, even after two flushing with cleaner there are still visible glittering particles when I add water to test out. How to properly remove that traces, then?

>Order some relatively cheap brushes on Amazon so I can have some real big round brushes

Not worth in the slightest to send them back since it was less than $8 and at least a few of them are in good condition, but still pisses me off. looks like half the package was left under a heavy box.

Yup. I find it quite annoying, however, how it always produce some small dust or freckles released from wipes.

Funny enough when I take a picture the skin tone is much closer to what it's supposed to be. But in front of me it looks a lot more washed out with gray shadows. I think it's relatively okay though.

Yeah, looks good already and will be better with more rendering. But it kind of hard to see the mini, even the highlighted one, you should probably separate the base brown color a bit more.

I bought that same package, they're garbage. If you're going to order online cheap brushes, try the "Golden Maple Detail Paint Brushes"
They are still cheap AF, and there's multiple sets with different shapes and sizes. Still synthetic and I bent the tips over after 20 minis, but I like them

I'd think it would be a poor building material. Too squishy and absorbent. You might be able to soak it or spray it with something to make it more rigid like hairspray or or thin superglue. But at that point you may as well just use a more suitable material like styrofoam.

Thanks man! Ive not even finished the base coats on all the pieces. Fortunately not much detail other than the walls, plaster and orbs but its slow going! Some other random terrain i did before.
>>
>>97709342
Sadly i dont own one. I undercoated black spray and then heavy dry brushed caliban green, then a lighter green then warpstone green. Then with brush painted the plaster a cream color.
Plan is to next dry brush the cream ushabti bone, go over all the cracks with a wash and then fix all the spillover ontl the green and give a final gaussblaster green highlight for the edges on the green walls. The orbs i will redo and work up to a flashgitz yellow instead of a green just to make it abit varied. Also paint some of the bits a gold or canoptek metal color. Without airbrush its taking forever!

Scale 75 Metallics, Kroxigor scales 1:1 with vallejo xpress medium. Mostly AK 3rd gen acrylics and Two thin coats as well.

I use basically every fucking paint range ever, no point in favoritism, they all do different things well.

nice edge highlighting right around the rim of the base, but could use grass tufts maybe
