I'm going to start an ent army for MESBG, and I was thinking that maybe there's enough extra bits to make an ent. Something like making the trunk and legs with clay/greenstuff/putty, then add the branches. Has anyone tried that? Any suggestions on how to sculpt to make it look like bark?

These new OP collages are great, hats off to the anon who had that idea. It feels nice seeing my work at the top of the thread, even if it's only one image in a big collection.
Now that Mr. Hobby sprays got extinct in the US, which metal primer should I use? Anything you guys can recommend?
>>97754582Yes, I think they're a nice addition. Keep up the good work OP!
>>97754590>Now that Mr. Hobby sprays got extinct in the USCan burgers confirm? This is fucked if true. Is it a tariff issue? To answer your question, perhaps rustoleum self etching primer? Never used it personally, but I remember hearing some guy talk about it.
>>97754567>It looks better in person.do the flakes look smaller? in the picture it practically looks like glitter. I complained about this before but I think leadbelcher is actually a terrible paint that people love to use when they shouldn't for some reason. it's tons of people's goto "bare metal" color, but it doesn't look anything like any kind of metal you would find in the white. at best it could be cast aluminum, but would you really expect a sword or a giant robot to be made out of unpainted cast aluminum? maybe you can pretend it's some fantasy metal like "mythril" or "adamantium," but I doubt most people are even thinking that far into it.
>>97754622I see it most commonly with drybrushed metallics. I believe it's caused by the metallic layer being too thin and too much of the undercoat poking through, it's less noticeable in person because you see more of the reflections from the metallic, which covers up the micro gaps. It's especially problematic with drybrushed metallics, since those never full cover in the first place.
>>97754632I think even with the best possible application leadbelcher isn't going to look like chrome or polished steel.
>>97754622>>97754632What this anon said, also I apply a subtle sharpening effect on my photos, which could make the problem look more severe than it is IRL.
>>97754642It's not supposed to.
>>97754648and that's the problem I'm talking about. it's not chrome, it's not nickel, it's not stainless or titanium or airframe aluminum. what is it supposed to be? everyone uses it as a generic "metal" color but it doesn't look like any actual metals that you would expect weapons or armor to be made out of.
>>97754662It's Iron. What a bizarre thing to be upset about.

Gotta get back to this so I have a model for March.Do you think GW could have made the model smaller?
Kitbashed the king of hobos from some cawdor parts and the mini of the month. I’ll probably have no use for it but at least it looks cool.
>>97754867Obligatory booty shot.
Rock mouf. Decided to put in some effort into making modular terrain bits that are a bit weird compared to my fairly normal rocks and grass stuff. Going to try and do some more pieces in that vein.>>97754704Welcome to chronic energy drain. In the moment you're doing work you'd rather be doing anything else but once you're in a position to do it, you'll have no interest. It happens to me even on days where I'm not working; I'll wake up and think 'I'd like to paint/sculpt today' but then I put it off for an hour or two, then the urge goes away and I spend it doing other shit only for the urge to return at like 10pm when I can't paint due to roommates.
>>97754567>They're there, but it's harder to tell apart due to the light/angle.imo you should push the shadows a LOT more, all the way to black in some parts, aso add scratches and stuff lik one the blue
>>97754945I might revisit it in the future then, maybe spray on some shadows with an airbrush. I have plenty of models I'd like to be at least semi-presentable on the board before an upcoming game.

>>97754704>>97754913I hate it when that happens. I think up of cool idea at work but when I get home, I'm too tired to put them in action.
Working on my first few minis as entry to the hobby, Im feeling quite proud.
>>977554382nd pic, excuse my retarded pictures currently at work.
>>97755297>>97755408My advice? Fool yourself into it. Instead of mentally saying "okay I'm going to sit down for an entire night of painting", set a tiny goal. "I'm going to sit down and finish edge highlighting that model from yesterday.", "I'm going to prime a single miniature in preparation for when I want to paint next", etc. Once you've sat down in the chair and gotten that one little goal out of the way it's suddenly a lot easier to continue painting to your heart's content. I find that if I mentally frame things as "I'm going to do this large job tomorrow" I'll find other things to do in order to put off doing it.I also recommend setting yourself up an easy way to document ideas and intended things you want to do for future reference; I have a private Discord server just for me where I dump photos I find of what other people have done and put notes like "Steal this idea" or just put in a short note like "Undead skewered by barbed wire like the Necrovision game trailer"; then when you've fooled yourself into sitting down and doing the tiny task if you don't have anything that immediately stands out as the next thing you want to do, you can pull out your phone and look at those photo references or text notes and see if anything jumps out at you.>>97755401You could try this too I suppose and see if it works for you. Personally I'm cranking my hog twice a day and often burning 4-8 hours on video games and I don't have any real problems with my dopamine stopping me from doing painting/modelling. Your mileage may vary.
>>97755438My advice: dont strip nor repaint those minis EVER. Use them as a way to check how you improve and how far you've come. Also, as years pass, you will look at them with nostalgia and love.Picrel is my first mini ever, its over 25 years old now

>>97756912the names matter because people use the colors based on them. I think it's clear that most people strive for at least some degree of realism in their fantasy toy soldiers. for example you don't see people painting heavy bolters like they're made out of wood because even though they're fictional weapons why would a gun be made out of wood? on the other hand you see plenty of bolters painted with leadbelcher or gunmetal because people simply assume that those are appropriate gun colors based on the names. would they still have chosen those paints if they knew they weren't actually realistic gun colors? maybe some would, maybe even most, but at least some would not. I think there is value in sharing information so the people who do care about that kind of thing and just aren't informed about it can make use of it in their decisions. trying to shut down sharing of information because you don't agree with it or because it doesn't fit your world view is small minded and actual sperg behavior.

what's the best rust effect paint that isn't dirty down/enamel
When it comes to paint name I think the only two factors worth considering is>is the name coolAnd>does it indicate which part of the color wheel you’d think it belongs to without too much esoteric knowledge. “XV88” is my classic go to badly named paint. I'm a little stuck on what to do for some of my Cursed City bases. Most of the character models are easy enough to just put stones down, but a few of them make it a little more difficult for me. Like on the captain, should I treat the ruble he's standing on as having landed on top of the road or maybe have only part of the base be brick work and the rest dirt?Or the ogor, which looks to be standing on what is meant to be stones from the road. I could treat that as some kind of rubble or try to blend my own stones in with it. Any suggestions?

>>97758107>>97758204That's probably the best way to do it. I have plenty of rocks, tufts, real dirt, and texture paste to work with. Hopefully I can learn to be a bit of a better baser through this since my past bases have been uninspired at best.I think the only thing left I'll have to contend with is what to do with all the slotta models for the zombies and skeletons. I'll probably end up just cutting the slottas off and glue them directly onto the stones. I hadn't planned to do everything with the flagstones but I have so many now I may as well.
>>97758176there are plenty of sets but they all suck, just pick out a miniature and everything you would use to paint it and put it in a box.
>>97758149where does the breach of the gun and the ammo go in that model GW?
>>97758149This looks excellent. I have to agree with the other anon about the red on the smokestacks. If you're trying to convey that the engine is running red hot, a little bit of brighter heat color might sell that better. Especially on the fans on top. I can envision the engine running super hot and the heat turning parts of it orange-white.The bottom of the dozer blade also strikes me as being a bit too clean. Since it looks to be bare steel I think there should be at least a little bit of rust and wear spots on it. Looking at it more there's doesn't seem to be a whole lot of rust or wear on the steel colored parts, which seems at odds with the two side doors. But again, excellent work.
>>97758527>my past bases have been uninspired at best.I 3d print the exact same cracked mud textured base for all my minis and drybrush it the same way for all of them.I didn't always do this, but I came to like the consistency of it across the collection.

Any feedback or suggestions for the hair or the sculpted dirt? Another anon suggested granite gray
>>97759645I primed them all with black, was that a mistake?
>>97759770Not necessarily, but you will have darkened colors that absorb light more, rather than their true neutral tone you get from grey. Whatever color you use for the base is going to have an effect on everything else you put on it. You get the opposite effect if you use white, with all your colors showing up in better contrast but becoming more pastel. There's plenty of use cases for a black primer, just as there is for any other color you can put on for the base.
>>97759592Don't be hard on yourself because the first mini you paint looks like trash. Enjoy the process for what it is and try to learn a little bit more with each mini assembled and each mini painted. Also a tip I've used to boost my own ego about how I've progressed. Keep your first mini painted untouched in a drawer or something. Go back and look at the fucker in a year and you will see how far you've progressed.
>>97759725Kinda depends on what feel you're going for with the hair and how you plan to paint the other details. You could do full-on cold and even go grey-ish. Deep red or blonde would make the paintjob warmer. Black/charcoal like anon suggested would be the neutral choice.
>>97759787>>97759791Thank you.
>>97759831Taken from one of the Citadel "How to" guides on the 40kg sticky. Don't sweat yourself too much, black is a good learning experience to force yourself to learn layering and building your patience, as you will need to do a bit of extra paint passes for full saturation. You also get 'free' recess shading that you won't need to get too detailed with from the natural darkness of the black (provided a dark shadow and not light shine highlight/NMM is what you are going for).

>>97759592Just have fun, painting is a skill you develop over time. Nothing can be ruined, its paint and plastic. If you don't like something you can cover it over, or even strip the paint off and start over from the beginning. Getting a feel for thinning the paint takes a little time and practice, don't beat yourself up over learning.

>>97760404>extra thinA lot of people like to use this glue by wicking it into a crack, you dry fit the pieces then wick it in along the seems. Personally this doennt work super well, I prefer to paint both mating surfaces, let them sit for 20 seconds or so (this will soften them up, then I do one more pass on one surface and then press together. This takes practice, but when done perfectly you get just the right amount of melted plastic squeezeout so there is no more mold line. If you have too much squeezeout you can either use the glue-brush to wipe it away (but this can muddy details so be careful where you do so) Or just wait and clean it with a hobby knife (24 hours) or file/sand it down (72 hours).Imo extra thin is only half the puzzle, get yourself some testors black bottle plastic glue to use alongside the extra thin. You would probly asphyxiate yourself trying to use extra thin on a vehicle or something else large cause it just evaporates too quickly to do more than about 1.5" of seam.

>>97760465As the other anon said, brace your arms against the table. You'll need to find the right angle and position that works for you and gives you both clear line of sight to your work and access for your brush. Another method of bracing is where you brace both forearms against the work surface and then brace your hands together near the wrists. Oddly I couldn't find any videos of people explaining the technique without taking 30~ minutes to get to the useful part, so you'll have to settle for this still shot of someone else doing it.

>>97762295Probably sprayed the o-ring onto one of your models and just haven't noticed yet.
Experimenting with changing XPS foam terrain rocks texture using chemical exposure. So far I've gotten interesting results out of cyanoacrylate and acetone; the particular texture I've seen seems to be most reliably created by letting CA glue dry on the foam and then dabbing on acetone after. Looks very interesting and I'm planning to use it to make obviously 'cursed' looking terrain bits.

We've been running a 4E/5E campaign for about 10 years, and I paint all the models for it. I have more time now they're out of the house. This has also led to my becoming interested in more advanced painting techniques - airbrushing, speedpaints, and now stippling. Currently working on a project that uses stippling for directional lighting. I paint every Sat/Sun afternoon for a couple of hours, and find it very relaxing. I batch paint groups (pirates, undead, townfolk), but I don't think I'd have time for an army.
>>97762295I love my Iwata airbrushes, for what it's worth (FWIW?). >>97760362>>97762419It's a pretty cool idea, but I think having it be uniform over the whole thing is a bit much. Might work better if just the carapace were rainbow, with plain, dark coloured flesh to accent it
>>97760426If you have an airbrush, just prime in black and zenithal the base color. Then use a brush to add highlights and a wash, and it should be passable for the table. You can also add a drybrush step if you have time. If you're painting a squad you can probably knock it out in a couple of hours.
